First off, I know this story is old, but I wanted to leave my thoughts here.

You are entirely correct in your A/N. I believe that, regardless of his treatment of her, Rin would stay. Being that I have known women in abusive relationships (my own mother), I know that they do not leave. In most cases they stay, and many times they stay until the behavior escalates and he either kills her or continues to abuse her until for the duration.

In feudal Japan, women were property. Bottom line. She belongs to him, and if she would have left, she would have been shunned by any society she came across, once they discovered she had left her lord, and/or was no longer a virgin. She would have nowhere to go.

Also, his remorse is believable as well. Many abusers simply can not help their actions, and are incapable of changing without serious therapy - and most DO feel regret for a period of time.

The story is sad, but very realistic.

I will not touch the characterization - because we are all putting these characters into situations YEARS in the future, and as much as he changes just in the duration of the manga, (one year or so), it is impossible to tell how he would be 5 years from then. You did a lovely job.

As for modern Japan, I spend a significant amount of time there and I'm here to tell you that if you get raped, the police will most likely tell you 'you were asking for it'. If you go out and wear a short skirt, walk alone in an alley, or go on a date with a man - you are ASKING FOR IT. No joke. There is virtually NO punishment for convicted rapists either. Rape is also seen as a SHAME, and so most women will not report it, and will not even tell family or friends about it.

Women in Japan did not have the benefit of a 'sexual revolution' the way we here in America did, and still women are oppressed sexually and sexism is both rampant and ACCEPTED. If your boss tells you that you will lose your job if you do not sleep with him, you lose your job or sleep with him. You really can't complain.

SLOWLY things are changing as they become more westernized, but women and the attitudes towards them are something that is very ingrained in the society.

The story is wonderfully written, and so incredibly sad. Don't listen to ignorant people who want to flame you, because of their lack of understanding.

Ah! Such a sad story! It is a shameful thing indeed that in Japan, today, as 500 years ago, women have so few rights... It's always the women's fault, ne? It makes my heart cry. I belong to the SCA so I know how few rights women had... Except in ancient Ireland before Patrick came. The Brehan Laws made them equal under the law. The Church made women second-class because of the 'supposed' sins of Eve (Keh! She was framed). When I was 18 (many moons ago ;) ) my boyfriend was very abusive... And the police REFUSED to throw him in jail after he choked me (this was before the new domestic violence laws went into effect). Long story short after he held a twelve gauge shotgun to my head one night, I desided either I would kill him or myself if I put up with one-more-thing. I went to my Dad (which said boyfriend would never let me be alone with) and told him. Needless to say, my Dad confronted him, told him to leave NOW, and if he came within 500 feet of me or threatened me again they would *never* find his body. After say... what 20 years? I still have trust issues. Ladies, if this happening to you, get out NOW. Don't become Rin. Never allow anyone to treat you like crap, you are worth more than that. Gee, is it SO much for me to ask to have a cute, sweet, gentel-souled guy with fire in his heart to love a girl? *chuckles, still a hopeless romantic waiting for her Knight after 43 years of life* Gotta squeeze some lemons now... Keh! Diatribe over. I do ramble on...*sorry* bows humblely.

dark beauty.. that's how i'd describe this one..
another toast to the last part about the whole take on women's rights, or there lack of, at the end.
you should also mention that even when reported, women face endless scrutiny and trial is not exactly pleasant. especially in cases where there hadn't been an evident struggle (as such would usually be the case when the victim knows her assailant), the court is unmerciful to the victim and assumes consent had been given. after that, not only does the man walk away free, the victim is branded as a liar and a slut. goodness.. and ppl wonder why rape victims DON'T report their cases?? it's messed up.. years of patriarchal rule has left women feeling responsible for men's sins.
u have a great way with words.. i'm actually from fanfic.net.. i'll have to look for you!
u inspire me to attempt a darkfic..

That was so sad but i liked it a lot. I read your note at the end and I understand how Rin would be thinking considering that this was back in a time where woman were nothing but property and baby making machines. I also sort of understand Sesshoumaru's way of showing his "love" for Rin. He's a very traditional and proud man...and his pride is what kept him from truly expressing his feelings the way he wanted to...instead he forced his affections on Rin (in the harshest of ways) and his pride wouldnt except rejection or anything like that. It's sad that Rin could only find freedom in death but at least I like to think she was finally at peace with her own heart and somehow in her death she was able to forgive herself and Sesshoumaru. But anyway I really liked this fic and I love that song by Evanesense (sp?)

sad. very sad. Well written, i assume that she took her own life at the end- you didn't say exactly what caused her to die. Sesshoumaru admitted that he loved her but he hated the fact that she was a human, again so very sad. good job. I look foreward to more of your stories.
