Times Change
Chapter 1
Kagome pushed the door open to their flat, tossed her briefcase on the coffee table and
collapsed face-down on the couch.
"Kagome, you're back," InuYasha stood behind the couch and looked down at her.
She turned her head, opened an eye and stared up at him. "Of course I am," she said.
"But it's so early," he said. "You usually don't get back till--"
"I don't wanna talk about it," she moaned. "I'm hungry, I'm tired, and I think I just failed
my anatomy test."
"But you--"
"Tired, InuYasha! I'm very tired, and I don't wanna talk."
He moved to the front of the couch and sat down one of its arms. "I was just--"
"You're still talking, InuYasha!"
"Fine!" He pushed himself off the arm and disappeared into the back of the flat.
Kagome sighed and sat up. "InuYasha . . ."
No reply.
"InuYasha?"
Still nothing.
"InuYasha!"
"What!"
"Will you, please, come in here?"
He skulked back into the living room, arms folded. "What!"
She took her hands and pushed her hair back from her face. "I'm sorry for yelling at
you," she said. "I just had a bad day, and it's not fair for me to get mad at you just because I
couldn't identify the parts of a fetal pig."
He continued to sulk.
She rolled her eyes. "Gods! Do you have to look at me like that? I already said I was
sorry. What more do you want from me?"
"Nothing," he shrugged.
She collapsed back on the couch. "I'm too tired for this. Why did I think I could handle
pre-med?"
"If you hate it so much, why don't you just quit?"
"Drop out of school?" she laughed. "You want me to drop out of school?"
"If it makes you so miserable," he said.
"No," she said. "What makes me miserable is that after coming home from a full day of
classes and a full day of work all you can do is hassle me."
His hands dropped to his sides. "When did I hassle you?"
"From the moment I stepped through the door!" she sat up again. "'Oh, Kagome, you're
home.' Of course I'm home; where the hell else would I be! I go to school in the morning; I
work every afternoon. I spend most of my nights in the library or in the lab trying to make sense
of my professors' lectures. I have three different friends, trying to pull me in three different
directions. Grandpa's sick. I've got finals in a week, and all I want is a moment of peace to
myself . . . Sheesh!"
He hung his head low, ears pressed flat against his head. "I didn't know you were so sick
of me," he said. "I'll leave you alone." He disappeared again.
"InuYasha . . ." Gods, he was just like a little kid sometimes. Any time he didn't get his
way, he had to go and pout about it. "InuYasha?"
"I'm leaving you alone," he called out.
"Well . . . why don't you come out and watch TV with me?" she asked.
"I'm leaving you alone," he repeated.
"Stop being such a bastard, will you!"
No reply.
"Jeez . . ." she pushed herself off from the couch and made her way to his room. She
knocked gently on the door as she pushed it open and peered inside. "InuYasha?"
"I'm leaving you alone," he said again. "I refuse to get bitched at one more time tonight."
She sighed and slumped against the doorframe. He was sitting in his window, staring out
at the rooftops, his form silhouetted by the delicate rays of moonlight. It had been four years
since they'd completed the quest, and two years since they'd started sharing a flat together. And
as many times as she'd seen it, she still wasn't used to seeing him in "normal" clothes. In this
case it was jeans and a black T-shirt that read "Life Sux."
It was a full moon. Tomorrow would be a new moon. "Are you really so sick of me,
Kagome?" The sadness in his voice stabbed at her heart.
"InuYasha . . ."
"Am I really such a nuisance to you?"
She shook her head, advancing into his quarters. "No," she said. "I just have a million
other things on my mind, right now. As soon as finals are over . . ."
He turned to face of her, his amber eyes full of pain.
She sat down at the foot of his bed. "You're not a nuisance, InuYasha, and I'm certainly
not sick of you. It's just . . . things are different now. I'm in college, and the classes are a lot
harder. If I don't work, we'll lose the flat. Eri's getting married next month, and Yuka's getting
married next spring. I'm trying to plan a baby shower for Ayumi, and then there's Grandpa. You
know how dangerous pneumonia can be to someone his age." She fell back onto the futon and
stretched her feet out. "My schedule's just too jam packed."
"Would it kill you to cut back a little?" he asked.
"Cut back on what?" she asked. "I can't drop out. I can't quit my job. I can't bail on my
friends, and I certainly can't bail on Gramps . . . I'm just stuck."
He looked away from her. "You don't seem to have a problem bailing on me," he said.
She rolled over onto her side and propped herself up on her elbow. "Is that what you
think I'm doing? Bailing on you?"
He shrugged. "We don't do anything together any more. You're always at work or at
school or at the temple. And then when you DO come home, you don't wanna do anything. You
just lay around and complain how tired you are. You don't wanna cook. You don't feel like
going out. And I can't remember the last time we went through the well."
She sighed. "I guess I'm not much fun, any more."
They were quiet for a moment.
"Why don't you just take a break for awhile?" he asked.
"Take a break from what?" she asked.
"School," he said.
"InuYasha . . ." she raised an angry eyebrow.
He tried to wave her down. "I'm not saying drop out; I'm saying take a break."
"What? Like a semester off?" she asked.
He shrugged. "I don't really know what a semester is."
"It's half a year," she said. "Six full cycles of the moon."
He nodded. "That sounds like a good amount of time to recover yourself."
"InuYasha, as tempting as that is, I know if I took that much time off, I'd forget
everything I learned and then I'd flunk out. Besides, winter break's in two weeks. A whole
month with no classes," she smiled.
"And what will you do with that month?"
"I dunno," she said. "Whatta you feel like doing? You said we haven't done anything
together in awhile."
He smiled at her. "I'd like to visit our friends on the other side of the well," he said.
She considered his proposal. It had been awhile since they'd seen the others-Miroku,
Sango, Kaede and Shippo . . .
"So, whatta you think?" he asked.
She smiled and nodded. "I think that would be a very good idea. It'll be like a vacation."
His smile widened.
She sat up and rubbed her palms against her thighs. "Are you hungry, InuYasha? I could
make us some instant Ramen."
He shook his head. "I'm not very hungry right now."
She pushed herself off the bed. "Well, I'm gonna go fix myself some. We HAVE been
eating take-out too much."
"Kagome . . ."
She turned to face him. "What?"
A sly smile crossed his lips. "Leaving so soon?"
She smiled in reply. "InuYasha . . ."
"You can stay with me tonight," he said.
"I could," she said. "But AFTER I get something in my stomach, and not a moment
before." She left his room, then returned peeking around the corner. "You dirty dog."
He growled at her and chased her down the hallway.
