Friendly Persuasion
Chapter One:
2 in 1
“No!”
“Please?”
“No!”
“Well why not?”
He stumbled over his words, “B-Because!”
“That’s not answer, Inu-Yasha.”
“You just can’t.”
“Give me one good reason why.” Kagome demanded as she crossed her arms over
her chest and tapped her foot impatiently.
“B-B-Because you’re the one that said...”
“Forget what I said.
I want to. May I, please?” Kagome pleaded.
He hated it when she pleaded, “Fine. Do whatever you want.”
Her eyes lit up, “Really?
You mean it?”
“Yeah, yeah.”
Inu-Yasha said, trying to ignore those eyes.
“Thank you!” She
exclaimed as she threw her arms around his neck, “I’ll get started right away!”
Inu-Yasha didn’t want her to let go, but she did and was soon
running towards the well that would take her home.
“Kagome...”
“Mom, Grandpa, Sota; I’m home!”
“Welcome back, Kagome!
How long are you going to stay with us this time?” Her mother asked.
“Probably for a couple of days.”
“What’s the occasion?”
Kagome’s grandfather asked as he came into view.
“I’m going to take one of my friends to the Feudal Era.” Kagome said offhandedly as she grabbed a
soda from the fridge.
Mrs. Higurashi and Kagome’s grandfather stared openmouthed at
her, “You’re what?!”
Kagome looked at them blankly, “I’m going to take one of my
friends to the Feudal Era. Kaede and
Sango are both interested in seeing someone, other than me, that comes from the
future.”
“Which friend are you planning to take? Hopefully one that can handle herself.”
“Don’t worry. Inu-Yasha
will protect us if things get too rough.”
“Kagome,” Mrs. Higurashi began, as though Kagome were still
five years old, “you can’t rely on Inu-Yasha too much. He can’t always be with you.”
“I know, Mom, but he complains he doesn’t get enough action
in his life.”
“Still, that doesn’t give you any right to take him off your
shelf whenever you need his protection only to put him back without so much as
an offer to do something nice for him.”
Extremely flustered by her mother’s comment, Kagome finished
her soda, grabbed her large yellow backpack, and decided to visit her friends
for the last couple of minutes of school.
“Kagome! You’re
back!”
Kagome turned to look at her friends, Yuka and Eri, as they
ran towards her.
“Yuka! Eri! How’s it going?”
“Not too bad. How
about you? Are you still hanging around
with that punk?”
“Inu-Yasha? A
punk?” Kagome couldn’t help but
smile at the thought of the hanyou in a backwards baseball cap.
“You are, aren’t you?”
Yuka asked.
“You need to shake him off, Kagome-chan. And fast.”
Eri stated urgently.
Kagome was about to defend Inu-Yasha’s good points, but
another voice cut into her thoughts, “I really don’t see why you two feel that
you have the right to control who she hangs out with.”
Both Yuka and Eri turned to face a boy with dark hair that
was tied into a high ponytail. He
suddenly reminded Kagome of Kouga, the wolf demon that claimed he loved her.
“Well what makes you think that you can just barge
into someone else’s conversation?”
Asked Eri.
The boy looked around, “Funny. I don’t see a room in which you’ve closed yourselves off from the
rest of the world. So long as you’re
outside, your conversations are open to anyone that happens to pass by.”
“Listen, whatever we say is...”
“So, Kagome was it?
I’ve noticed that you’re never at school. How come?” The
dark-haired boy asked as he turned to Kagome.
“Uh... I’m...”
“She’s been sick with diabetes!” Eri interrupted.
The dark-haired boy turned to glare at them, “I wasn’t
talking to you. Don’t invite yourselves
into my conversations.”
“Look who’s talking!”
Yuka exclaimed.
The boy smirked, “But what I say is actually worth listening
to.”
“Not to be rude or anything, but who are you?” Kagome asked as the boy in question admired
Yuka and Eri’s blank expressions.
“Name’s Kyo. Full
name’s Kyo Ookamia Usuya. Pleased to me
you Kagome...?”
“Oh! Higurashi
Kagome,” Kagome said with a smile, “pleased to meet you too.”
“Kagome-chan, you shouldn’t hang out with him. He’s trouble.” Eri said.
Kyo looked at Yuka and Eri with a steely look in his eyes,
“What did I tell you about controlling who she hangs out with?”
Yuka and Eri just glared as Kyo took Kagome by the elbow and
led her away.
“Thank you for saving me from their questions.”
Kyo kept walking, not even bothering to look at Kagome. He finally stopped and looked at Kagome with
angry eyes.
“You really need to learn to stick up for yourself. Goodness knows that there’s not always gonna
be someone to get your little ass out of trouble.”
“I know... but I can’t bring myself to...”
“Yell at people to leave you alone, right?”
“Yeah,” Kagome said meekly, “oh no.”
“What?” Asked Kyo as
a brown-haired boy began walking towards them.
“Hojo’s headed this way.
He’s really nice but...”
“But he annoys you.
That and because you’re already dating someone else.”
“You’ve got the first part right, but I’m not dating him.”
“You’re just going as friends?”
“Yeah, that’s right.
Just friends.” Kagome said as
Hojo reached them.
“Hey Kagome-chan!”
“Hojo-kun! Hi!” Kagome said, putting on her fake smile.
Noticing the smile and tone, Kyo decided to speak once again,
“Listen, Hojo, Kagome’s got a lot of catching up to do, so if you could go on
your own merry way, she’d appreciate it.”
“Oh! Of course, how
foolish of me! You should go back home
and rest.”
“Yeah, I’ll get right on that, Hojo-kun.” Said Kagome, not meeting his eyes.
“All right. I’ll see
you later, Kagome-chan!” Said Hojo as
he jogged off happily.
Kagome sighed heavily, “At least he didn’t ask me out.”
Kyo gave Kagome a hardened look, “Be careful who you hout
out
with, Higurashi. I won’t control who
you consider a friend, but be careful just the same.”
“He’s acting a lot like Inu-Yasha,” Kagome thought, “he
got me out of trouble, and now he’s yelling at me for getting myself into
trouble in the first place!”
Upon reaching the end of her thought, Kagome looked around
for Kyo, but the dark-haired, green-eyed boy was nowhere to be seen.
“If you’re going to think, Higurashi, keep your eyes on me
while you do it.”
“Now he reminds me of Sesshomaru. He’s cold, calm, collected, but instead of
wearing the same kind of expression, he shows his feelings. His eyes aren’t always cold like his are. He’s like Inu-Yasha and Sesshomaru ed ued up
into one person. Scary...” Kagome thought as she decided to go home via
a shortcut.
Unfortunately, Kagome had never taken this shortcut before,
and was completely clueless as to where it led. In actuality, it led to the dark side of Tokyo; full of gangs and
other dark groups.
Completely oblivious to where she was going, Kagome just kept
walking in a straight line, sure that she would eventually reach the main road
that would lead her to her family’s shrine.
Kagome thought she could hear cars, so she turned a few corners,
but soon found herself facing a dead end.
“That’s odd. I could
have sworn I heard the main street. Oh
well, I’ll find it. I just have to go
back the way I came from.”
Which was going to be difficult, since seven older boys now
blocked the way Kagome had come with glints in their eyes and twisted smiles on
their faces.
“Hey there. What’re
you doin’ here?” Asked one, a toothpick
sticking out of his mouth.
“I’m going home. Let
me through.”
The lead boy’s grin grew wider, “You don’t live around here. You’re a rich girl. Rich girls don’t live here. And they certainly don’t walk through
here. Admit it: you’re lost.”
“I’m not lost!”
Kagome yelled, then added quietly, “I’m just not where I’m supposed to
be.”
The seven grins grew even wider.
“How much do you wanna bet that you don’t even know where the
main street is?”
“Her skirt!” Called
one of the boys in back.
“Her purse!” Called
another.
The leader’s grin became a smirk, “Excellent ideas. How about both? Tell us which way the main street is and, if you’re right, we’ll
take you home ourselves. But if you’re
wrong, you give us your purse and off with that skirt of yours.”
“For your information,” Kagome said angrily as she pointed
towards the dead end, “the main street is...”
A twang of metal cut Kagome off. The leader had stepped forward and reached for Kagome’s small
bag, but had been stopped by something.
Whatever it was, had cut the straps of Kagome’s bag... just barely
missing the boy’s wrist.
“I wouldn’t reach for her again, if I were you,” a cold voice
said, “unless, of course, you fancy losing your hand.”
“Who’s there?” The
leader demanded loudly.
“Me.” Said whomever
it was, a male chuckle reaching their ears.
“Who’s there?”
“Who are you?”
“Why should I tell you?”
The leader asked.
“Then why should I tell you who I am if you won’t tell
me who you are?”
“Because I said so!”
“Anyone can use that excuse.”
“Well why do you want to know my name?”
“So I know what to put on your tombstone.” The disembodied voice said calmly.
The leader growled, “Get down here!”
“Why?” The voice
asked with a yawn.
“I wanna get a good look at you.”
“Okay.”
The sound of feet hitting the ground could be heard. Then came the sound of even softer
footsteps. Kagome swore she heard a
sword being drawn, but reasoned with herself that she’d spent way too much time
with Inu-Yasha if she was thinking that.
But, sure enough, a sword pierced the darkness, followed by
someone Kagome thought she knew, “Hello Kagome.”
“Who...?”
“It wounds me that you have forgotten me so easily, but that
is to be expected, I suppose. Let me
deal with these idiots and I’ll reintroduce myself.”
“What makes you think you can handle us?”
“I’d leave him alone, Minoru.” Called one of the remaining six boys.
“Minoru? That’s
your name? Truly pathetic,” the boy
said as he put the sword away and held his hand out to Kagome, “c’mon
Kagome. These idiots won’t bother you. Come with me and I’ll take you home.”
