Also, Kagome and Inuyasha spend a bit of time in this story redefining their relationship from societal expectations into what it actually is- in this case a very powerful, nonsexual friendship. They, and particularly Inuyasha, don't really have any idea what they're doing, so it might come across as something different, but there is no sexual relationship between Inuyasha and Kagome in this series.

Math Test, Girl Talk, and Psychology in the Warring States Era
Kagome pulled herself out of the well, a dazed look on her face as she looked around to see if anyone was there to meet her. One peaceful clearing and not one person visible added up to zero people waiting, but she wasn't worried; she was a day earlier than she'd planned. As much as she loved her home, coming here always made her feel like a part of herself that she hadn't even known was missing had been restored. And there really was only so much math she could take before returning to the hunt for the jewel shards felt like a vacation rather than a duty. The scent of trees filled her city bred senses as she hefted her backpack to her shoulder and started toward the village hoping she might see Inuyasha on the way.
When she'd gone home he'd still been off with his brother, but she hoped he was back by now. She... missed him. And she wouldn't admit it to him but she was worried. Sesshomaru had been, if not an active enemy of late, then at least a very real threat for just about as long as she'd known Inuyasha. Though she respected Inuyasha's desire to get to know his brother better, she couldn't help feeling there was something going on that she didn't know about; and if it involved Sesshomaru it probably wasn't a good something. Sighing deeply, she glanced up the path ahead of her and suddenly froze. There was someone waiting for her on the path, and that long, white hair wasn't Inuyasha's...
Sesshomaru was looking off toward the village, a thoughtful frown on his face, when he seemed to notice her. He turned toward her and came closer suddenly, and Kagome fell ungraciously on her butt when she tried to take a step backwards. She stared wide-eyed up at the demon as he smirked down at her.
"Kagome," he said, his voice surprisingly free of condescension.
She squeaked. "How... How do you know my name?" Granted, there really wasn't any reason he shouldn't know it, she thought, but he had never before expressed an interest in learning it, or in actually using it to refer to her.
His eyes narrowed as his assessment of her intelligence seemed to visibly drop a few points. "You are Inuyasha's priestess."
"Ah... Yeah, I guess." She stood up cautiously, keeping a wary eye on Sesshomaru. "Um, what are you doing here?"
She was slowly edging away from him, and he must have noticed because he smirked again and said in a slightly reprimanding tone, "If I wished you dead, you would not be now breathing."
She stopped. That was true she guessed, but she really wanted to know where Inuyasha was...
"Kagome!" Inuyasha jumped down in front of her and she breathed a deep sigh of relief when she saw him. "You're back," he observed needlessly, but then he seemed to be at a loss for words as he raised a hand to scratch at his head and glanced nervously between her and Sesshomaru. She narrowed her eyes at him intently. Yeah, something was definitely going on. "Sesshomaru is going to travel with us," the half-breed said finally, glancing up at her questioningly as if asking her opinion of this development.
Kagome's eyes flew open wide in surprise, but she closed them. Okay, forget that he's Sesshomaru and just try to think about this objectively... They could always use another fighter, and Sesshomaru was strong. And he was Inuyasha's brother- being family earned him points, even if he'd only used it in the past as a reason to try and kill his half brother. But really it all came down to... She opened her eyes and met Sesshomaru's gaze head on. "You want to come with us, help us gather the shards of the jewel, and destroy Naraku?"
He glanced at Inuyasha, but met her eyes again as he answered briefly, "Yes."
She nodded decisively. "Alright then, it's settled. Where's everyone else?" She had a strange momentary vision of Sesshomaru smirking in that infuriating way of his and informing her coolly that he'd killed them, but she shook it off and looked at him before glancing over at Inuyasha.
Inuyasha seemed relieved at her acceptance of his addition to their company, and answered her quickly. "At the village, waiting."
"Good, I can't wait to see them." She turned and smiled at Inuyasha, greeting him for real. He smiled back, unguarded for a moment, and she felt her heart flutter a bit as he took her backpack and carried it for her.
The moment cracked slightly when he started complaining loudly. "Jeez, what do you have in here? I don't understand why you bring so much crap with you. Did you bring some of those 'teks'-books? You know you never have time to look at them, why do you bother bringing them? They're just dead weight, and then I have to end up hauling them around whenever I have to save your ass..."
Her eyebrow twitched. Yes, she'd missed Inuyasha. But they say absence makes the heart grow fonder... "Inuyasha," she growled warningly. She shot him a glare. "Sit."
Kagome turned and continued on toward the village, ignoring the sudden crash behind her.
She glanced up, surprised, when she realized Sesshomaru was walking beside her. She looked at him warily from the corner of her eye; he was smirking again... but he was carrying her backpack. She stopped suddenly and looked at him.
And looked at him. His arm... He held her backpack in his left hand. There was something weird about that, and she really was going to remember it in a minute, but then she noticed he was laughing quietly- at Inuyasha?- and she forgot she was supposed to be trying to figure something out, and glanced back at Inuyasha sprawled in the dust and broke out in a laugh of her own.
Inuyasha glared at them darkly as he pulled himself to his feet, but his expression turned to one of surprise as she rushed back to him and hugged him impulsively. "I missed you," she said softly.
Slowly, his arms came up around her, holding her close, and Kagome didn't see the look he shot at his brother over her head.

Sango was in Kaede's hut when Kagome left Inuyasha and Sesshomaru near the edge of the village and went to go talk to the other woman. Kagome didn't know why they didn't come in with her- was Sesshomaru not welcome in the village? For whatever reason, she was glad that she could walk into the village by herself and have a few moments to compose her thoughts before she saw Sango.
The minute Sango saw her, she dropped what she was doing and went outside with Kagome, immediately sensing, through some womanly intuition, the need for a bit of gossiping. "They got back two days ago," she replied when Kagome asked. "Inuyasha just came in and said Sesshomaru and Rin would be traveling with us."
"Rin? That little girl? She's still... with Sesshomaru?" Sango nodded and the two women looked at each other. "He carried my backpack," Kagome said, the weird feeling it had given her showing in her voice. When Sango looked questioning, not understanding the significance of the comment, Kagome clarified. "That's something that nice people do, or guys who want to ask you out." She shook her head. "It's kind of odd when a demon who's tried to kill you several times suddenly starts carrying your bags for you. I mean, it's different with Inuyasha. He's really a nice guy, underneath all that crassness, and I guess a part of me kind of expects it from him cause we've known each other so long. It was just... weird," she finished lamely, but Sango nodded.
"I know what you mean. Despite his usual reticence with most of the village, Sesshomaru has been very polite, almost overly so. I will freely admit that I know less about him that you or Miroku, but he seems to... not be his usual self. If he was human, I would say he was trying to gain favor with us," the girls exchanged odd looks, "but as he is such a powerful demon, and with such a history as he has, I cannot think what he could want," Sango said thoughtfully. "It's all very strange."
"Yeah, tell me about it." Kagome sat down and propped her chin up in her hands. "So, Sesshomaru hates his brother, hates humans, would do anything to get his dad's sword, but in the real world he's walking around with a little human girl and then decides he's gonna start traveling with us; 'us' being not only the brother he doesn't like, but also primarily human?"
Sango smiled. "I think you've covered it."
"I know it's kinda stating the obvious. But, I gotta wonder, what's going on with him? Did he... change his mind?" Kagome frowned. Prejudices weren't usually something that someone changed, and they most definitely didn't change overnight.
"I think Miroku knows what's going on," Sango said. Kagome looked at her in surprise. "He seemed... strangely distracted when Inuyasha returned. He took a short trip by himself, but he should be back tomorrow."
"So he knows but he's not telling." Kagome pouted. "Well, that's no fun. We'll have to drag it out of him I guess." She looked sidelong at Sango who smirked.
"I suppose so," she said serenely in agreement.

Inuyasha watched his brother warily. He'd been slightly worried about Sesshomaru and Kagome meeting, though who exactly he'd been more worried about was unclear. He'd hoped Kagome would accept Sesshomaru, but he'd also feared that she would be able to see what lay between them. Feared, and yet strangely hoped as well. Hoped she'd been able to see it, so he wouldn't have to tell her as he had told Miroku before. He didn't think he had the guts to do that again- not with Kagome; not when he was unsure as to how she would take it. Humans... were hard to understand; Kagome doubly so. Sesshomaru... he wondered how much Sesshomaru knew of how deeply he cared for Kagome, how much his scent had betrayed when he saw her again. He'd tried to fight it in a, probably, vain effort to prevent anyone, mainly Sesshomaru, from noticing, which had led to Kagome "sit"-ing him as usual... And he'd felt strangely comforted by the action.
Sesshomaru shifted his weight, the first time he'd moved in the half hour or so Inuyasha had been watching him. He turned and looked at Inuyasha who fought the equally strong and conflicting impulses to either snarl defensively or to look away embarrassed. His ears flattened in unease but he held Sesshomaru's gaze defiantly and he thought he saw his brother smile. He stood from where he had been crouching and reached out to touch his brother's sleeve. "Sesshomaru," he said softly.
"Inuyasha," the demon replied, turning toward him more fully. "You're worried about conflict between myself and the woman," he observed, eyes focused intently on his brother's face. "Kagome," he amended, raising his hand to stroke his thumb over Inuyasha's cheek.
"Yeah," the half-breed had to admit, leaning into the touch.
"If there is any it will not come from me." Inuyasha shot a look of surprise at Sesshomaru at those words and the demon clarified, "I mean that I will endeavor to not provoke her in any way."
"Why?" Inuyasha found himself unable to stop from asking.
Sesshomaru's expression indicated that he was also surprised at this decision of his. "Because she is important to you," he said after a few moments of thought. "You care about her. Very much."
Inuyasha buried his face against Sesshomaru's chest. "Yes," he admitted. Sesshomaru's arms came up around him, pulling him closer, a sudden proprietary look passing over his face. "Sesshomaru," Inuyasha said suddenly, looking up at his brother. "I..." He reached up, threw his arms around Sesshomaru's neck, and wrapped his legs around the demon's waist pulling them closer together. "I care about you too, brother," he said softly, looking searchingly into Sesshomaru's eyes. "Very much."
Sesshomaru's eyes closed momentarily; opening them he looked at Inuyasha, the desire that filled him reflected in their golden depths. He did not respond verbally, but instead claimed Inuyasha's lips again in a kiss as he pulled the half-breed against him. Clothing flew off in several directions and Sesshomaru dedicated all of his attention to touching every inch of his brother's body, marking it as his own. That Inuyasha cared so much for the human girl- Kagome, he reminded himself- was both disturbing and not. It made a certain sense that the half-breed would be a victim of his father's same predilections, and there was certainly no demoness who would look twice at a half-breed. But in his earlier rumination on the subject, Sesshomaru found that he was bothered more by Inuyasha's feelings, and the fact that they were directed anywhere, than by the fact that they were directed at a human. Though, perhaps what disturbed Sesshomaru the most about the entire situation was how much he was disturbed. Why did he care? He stopped thinking about that. He didn't want to know the answer, and perhaps he already did but did not wish to acknowledge it, and there were far more interesting things to be doing at the moment than thinking.
Sesshomaru was kneeling on the ground, Inuyasha's back against his chest as the half-breed turned, his hands in Sesshomaru's hair pulling the demon's face closer to his mouth so that he could lavish the delicate ear and high cheekbone with kisses as he made his way to his brother's lips where he pulled Sesshomaru into a kiss, his tongue invading the other man's mouth, exploring familiar territory with all the enthusiasm of a first timer. The demon's hands rested lightly on Inuyasha's hips, but as he was dragged from his reverie he moved one up to brush it over the half-breed's nipple. Inuyasha moaned in appreciation as he leaned backwards, pressing against his brother's already hardened length and moving back and forth invitingly. Sesshomaru growled warningly, grabbing Inuyasha by the hair and shoving him down on his hands and knees. He trailed kisses down over Inuyasha's back, pausing with a smirk to give extra attention to the marks his claws had left the evening before, licking soothingly over the red marks. His lips followed the curve of the half-breed's ass as his unoccupied hand reached up to part the smooth cheeks, his tongue tracing around the opening there before darting in experimentally.
Inuyasha moaned heatedly, his breath catching in his throat as his brother's hand untangled itself from his hair and reached under his body to wrap firmly around his length. He whimpered in frustration and desire, unable to express the intensity of what he was feeling but wanting more of it. Sesshomaru shifted suddenly; firmly taking Inuyasha's hips with his hands, he positioned his brother before pulling him backwards, and Inuyasha growled softly as he felt his brother enter him. Sesshomaru's arm went under his brother's chest, pulling the younger man against him. He licked the edge of Inuyasha's ear with a gentleness that belied the force with which he snapped his body against his brother's, bringing a moan from both of them. Inuyasha's fingers tore into the ground beneath him; his body was filled with fire. He could feel Sesshomaru all around him, his brother's body on top of his, his arms, one wrapped under his chest, the other straight next to Inuyasha's own, his fingers tearing dirt from the ground as well, as he couldn't seem to move fast or hard enough to sate his desire.
Sweet god... Inuyasha thought he was going to explode. Certainly one body could not contain such heat, such wanting... Dammit, he wanted to turn around; he wanted to touch his brother, wanted to give him some of this heat,,, But from the tight whine in his ear, Inuyasha thought he didn't really need to do that. He pulled one hand from the ground and raised it to his neglected length, and the sudden pressure as his fingers closed tightly around the flesh was too much. His body jerked, a half shouted whine tore from his throat in surprise, and he did explode, his seed spattering across his stomach, his hand, and over the ground. He heard Sesshomaru gasp, a sharp intake of breath that turned into a shudder that ran the length of his body as Inuyasha felt his brother come, deep inside him. His energy suddenly left him, and Inuyasha collapsed, falling against the ground, breathing heavily.
Sesshomaru propped himself up on his shaking arms and looked down at his brother lying beneath him before he slowly lowered himself down as well and fell on top of Inuyasha. He tried to calm his ragged breathing, but found that it took several minutes. What was wrong with him? They had surely done far more exerting things, in various combinations, over the past couple weeks but nothing had so completely worn him out as the events of this day seemed to have done. He bent his head slightly so that his face pressed against the curve of Inuyasha's neck and inhaled deeply.
"I think I get it," Inuyasha said, after a minute. Sesshomaru made a noise of mild inquiry, too tired and sated to speak. Inuyasha turned his head slightly, looking at Sesshomaru over his shoulder. "You said you wouldn't pick a fight with Kagome, but nothing's stopping you from taking it out on me."
Sesshomaru's head shot up and he fixed his eyes on Inuyasha's.
Inuyasha smirked at him. "You did the same thing to dad," he said softly, an odd note to his voice.
Sesshomaru frowned and sat up. "Explain."
Rolling over, so that he could look up at his brother more easily, Inuyasha propped himself up on his elbows. "My mom," he said, his voice still soft, but clear. "You were so pissed at dad. You could have killed her."
Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes. It was not unheard of; if a demon had sunk so low as to pair with a human, for others to destroy the human, hopefully returning good sense to the demon in question. But... Sesshomaru looked at the creature lying before him- his brother. "Yes," he admitted.
Inuyasha smiled. "But you didn't." He sat up, leaning closer to his brother, and whispered conspiratorially, "You picked a fight with dad instead. Remember? You told me about it." Sesshomaru drew back, surprised. Inuyasha grinned. "You wanted someone who would fight you back; great Sesshomaru doesn't trouble himself with weak humans." He raised his hands and took Sesshomaru's face in them, his fingers cupped against the demon's delicately pointed ears. "That's why you won't mess with Kagome, but you don't have a problem fucking me raw."
Sesshomaru drew back again, astonished. He'd never examined his actions in such a way, but looking inside himself he could find nothing that refuted Inuyasha's words. His eyes narrowed in chagrin as he looked up at his brother again, still smiling, and observed caustically, "You look like an idiot. What are you grinning about?"
Inuyasha leaned forward and kissed him impishly on the nose. Sesshomaru snarled, but froze when Inuyasha spoke. "Because you're treating me like you treated him," he said simply.
"Inuyasha," he replied softly, searching his brother's eyes. He reached a hand up and drew one clawed finger down along Inuyasha's cheek, hard enough to draw blood, before leaning forward and licking the blood away. It was strange, but Sesshomaru thought... he also understood. Inuyasha had said it first, that Sesshomaru had sought him out because he was looking for something- a feeling of family. Family was people you cared about enough to show them your anger. Family was... people who cared about you enough to let you work things out your way. "Come here." Sesshomaru pulled Inuyasha against him; lying down again, he kept his arms wrapped around his brother's slender body. His face was pressed into the top of the half-breed's head, unable to get enough of the scent of him, as Inuyasha took some of the demon's hair and let it trail through his fingers as he waited for Sesshomaru.
Talking was not something Sesshomaru did a lot of. Explaining himself, even less. But, dammit... "Human perhaps she was, but Izayoi would not have been so easy to kill."
Inuyasha's ears pricked up. "Why?"
Sesshomaru snorted softly. "You ask why, child of her body?" Inuyasha chuckled. "If she had not been of such a spirit, Father would not have noticed her." He frowned thoughtfully, lost for a moment in memories. "She enjoyed telling people what to do. She was polite to me, but she hardly had the chance to be more as I was cold to her always. My mother's death still seemed fresh to me. I could not replace her; it seemed an affront to me that he could. And with such a creature..." He started slightly, as if he had forgotten where he was, and looked down at the top of Inuyasha's head. "Izayoi was... very strong. She bore many hardships without complaint, and she was firm in her decisions. She knew what she wanted and did not hesitate to seize it."
"I don't think you'd find Kagome an easy kill either," Inuyasha said as Sesshomaru fell silent. He cocked his head back, trying to look at his brother. "She could probably kick your ass," he continued conversationally.
Sesshomaru's eyebrows rose in disbelief. "So?" he said, amused. "Perhaps." He frowned, thinking. "Inuyasha, you would fight with her against me." It was not a question. "Even now, after all of this."
Inuyasha thought about it for a moment. "Yeah, I would." He took a deep breath. "I couldn't hurt Kagome. Not like that." He hesitated. "If it came down to that," he finished, the tone of his voice implying that he didn't ever want to see that happen.
Sesshomaru sighed, a soft expulsion of breath that stirred Inuyasha's hair. It bothered him, how much the priestess bound Inuyasha to herself. Though it was not entirely her fault... He knew about Kikyou- by reputation and rumor, and Inuyasha had told him much of the story as well, particularly concerning Naraku's hand in it.
But one thing he noticed now as he attempted to organize his mind after the upheaval of the past few minutes and prepare himself for sleep. The fact that he was bothered, no longer bothered him. Inuyasha's comparison to their father helped him to resolve one issue in his mind, the reason he cared so much. It was because, in his mind, Inuyasha was no longer just his father's bastard.
He was family.
