Chapter One
A cool night breeze sifted its way
through the thick forest as the full moon hung heavy in the midnight sky, its light filtering down to offer a feint
glow. Broad mid summer leaves rustled in
response and sounded more like swift running water to the girl that pushed her
way through the foliage looking for the toad-like demon she had been foraging
for food with only moments ago. For seven summers she had traveled with both
the small green demon named Jaken and their Lord, and for seven summers she had
stumbled into various misadventures. She
giggled thinking back to the many times she had wandered off from the
long-winded kappa, always to his detriment.
After all, she reasoned, he was the one charged with the responsibility
of her well being when their Lord was not around; he should be watching for
her, not the other way around.
Rin opened
her mouth to call for Jaken, who she surmised had probably fallen asleep
against a tree waiting for her, but the words died in her throat as a twig
snapped to her far right. Cautiously
turning to face the unknown source, she strained her ears as she listened for
any further signs of life. She was not
afraid; she never had a reason to be. Her Lord had always protected her from
humans and demons alike, but she still did not want to cause any problems for
him. She knew how much of an annoyance such trivial things as bandits and wild
youkai could be. He had far better things to do, such as standing in a field
while looking imposing as well as contemplating important ‘affairs of state,’
as Jaken had prattled on to her about a long time ago.
When
nothing else was heard, she moved forward to where she suspected the campsite
was. She was not very hungry, so the
wild fruits that she had picked would last her until morning when she could
properly search the area. The braches
and shrubs of the forest seemed to be getting thicker the further she traveled,
causing her to stop and rethink her path. ‘This
can’t be right, it’s darker here than it was around the camp area and I didn’t
think I went that far from it. Maybe I
should turn around and call for Jaken.’ Deciding
that was the best thing to do, Rin turned around and trudged back in the
direction she had come.
The forest
was now silent and motionless, save for the young woman that existed at the
center of it. This new development was
not lost on her. The air had gotten
colder as well, uncharacteristically cold for mid summer. Filling her lungs, she made the call, “Jaken-sama! Rin is finished finding food, where are you?” She winced, realizing that her call sounded
more like a loud and timid whisper than she had intended. That would not do, he would never hear
her.
She called for him once again,
“Jaken-sama!” No response. Rin sighed in frustration, digging into her
pack as she slumped down against a nearby tree.
She would just have to wait until she was found. Not expecting to wait much longer than five
minutes, she began munching on the gathered fruit with zeal. Perhaps she was a
bit hungrier than she had first realized.
~*~*~
Sesshoumaru raised his face to the midnight sky. Something was not right, the
creatures that normally made them selves known at this dark hour were
conspicuously missing; hiding as if to give warning of what is to come. Having acquired this expanse of forest and
surrounding lands from defeating its keeper scarcely days ago, he knew better
than to just shrug it off as a natural occurrence. Something was on the prowl, and he would find
it and dispatch it, just as he had the changeling youkai that had dared
challenge him. He recalled the battle,
and how the changeling had been quickly destroyed. He was mildly disappointed,
having heard many things about such demons, but never having faced one until
then.
But for now, he would return to the
camp where his young ward and retainer awaited him. Taking to the sky, he effortlessly glided
over the treetops, and within moments he stood by the two headed pack animal,
Ah-Un, that slept by the fire. He knew
immediately that Jaken and Rin had not returned from their foraging, though
having had ample time to do so.
Sesshoumaru could smell the toad no more than a few yards into the wood
line, but Rin’s scent was light in the area, and
quickly fading. Jaken had neglected his
duties again, much to the dog demon’s ire.
Jaken continued to snore loudly in
his sleep as his Lord seemed to materialize in front of him. “Jaken.”
“Yesh…my
Lord,” he answered in his sleep.
Sesshoumaru remained impassive as
he punted the kappa into a nearby tree, effectively waking him from his
slumber. “Jaken, where is Rin,” he asked, knowing that the imp would be unable
to answer him.
Jaken looked around frantically,
then back to his Lord, groveling as he did so. “She was here scarcely a moment
ago, my Lord! She must have wandered off again, such an impudent girl! She can
never follow simple dire—“ he was unable to finish his
sentence as he was once again sent flying into a nearby shrubbery; when he
looked up, Sesshoumaru was gone.
Having heard enough of the toad’s
ramblings, Sesshoumaru flew off following Rin’s
quickly diminishing scent. She seemed to have gone in circles around the camp
area before turning and heading towards the thickest part of the forest. He was closing in on her location when two
things happened within the breadth of a second.
He picked up the foul odor of the changeling demon, which had somehow
been cloaked until now, and then he heard it, the blood curdling scream of his
young ward.
~*~*~
Rin wiped
her hands on the side of her kimono, removing the bit of fruit residue that had
clung to them. She had finished her
dinner, and there were still no signs of Jaken or her Lord. Perhaps she had
wandered further than she had originally thought. She stood, gathering the remaining contents
of her pack and brushing the stray leaves off the bottom. “Well what do I do now,” she wondered aloud.
As if
someone had been listening, a harsh whisper was heard directly over her
shoulder, “Give me your form.”
Rin let out
a startled gasp in response and dodged forward, weaving in and out of the trees
without looking back. Sharp branches and
twigs stung against her delicate skin, drawing blood and tearing her kimono
with the harsher blows. Rin ran for what
seemed like an eternity, but she knew that whatever had said those four
frightening words was still behind her.
Her heart
beat painfully within her chest and her lungs felt dry and pained as she
struggled to breathe. Collapsing onto the ground, not being able to go any
further in the enshrouding darkness and crushing exhaustion from her prolonged
sprint, Rin spun herself to face whatever it was that had yet to show
itself. As if on cue, a dark shadow
wafted towards her. Though she strained her eyes, she could not make out any
solid form. She scooted quickly away from the lurking darkness, but it shot out
towards her, grabbing her ankle and dragging her towards it. ‘How
can a shadow grab me?!’ her mind thought frantically.
Her mental
inquiries were forgotten as a searing pain shot up her leg, unlike anything she
had ever felt. It was as if a knife was being forced into her bone and
traveling up her leg, shattering her small frame as it went. Knowing nothing but the pain as the dark
ethereal form fully settled over her, she threw her head back further into the
rich soil of the forest floor and let out a scream that would make any
creature’s blood freeze within its heart.
The last thing she saw was a set of dark fangs, pulsing with youkai
energy, and the last thing she felt was those fangs sinking into the flesh of
her neck, burying the massive amounts of youkai in her human soul.
~*~*~
Sesshoumaru
burst through the dense underbrush with Toukijin drawn and ready for
battle. The changeling youkai that was
above Rin merely looked up at him, realizing that the great dog demon would not
attack him using the sword since it was currently over the young woman. “Interesting…so you will not attack me for
fear of harming this human? How fortunate for me then, as I plan on using this
body to replace the one you destroyed!”
“Is this
your true form, changeling? Then it appears you are even weaker than I first
suspected.” Sesshoumaru sheathed his sword and flew toward the changeling,
slashing through its non corporeal body with his claws and scooping up Rin in
the process. He gracefully spun to
destroy what remained of the changeling, but the youkai shrieked and dissipated
into the forest.
“Foolish
dog, you cannot destroy me! That form
belongs to me now, and I will return to claim it,” the shadow hissed before it
completely vanished. Sesshoumaru made a
mental note to torture the changeling before he completely obliterated it the
next time it chose to show itself.
Sesshoumaru
took back to the air, intent on returning to the campsite to tend to his
ward. He could smell that her wounds
were not life threatening, but as he looked down at her prone body, he was
disturbed by what he saw. It was clear
that Rin was unconscious, but she was violently panting in shallow breaths and
convulsing. Her eyes would open every few seconds, but were unfocused and
rolled back into her head when she convulsed.
He could smell no poisons on her, and the only wound of entry was the
punctures on her neck.
Thinking
back to what he knew about changeling youkai, he felt his frustration begin to
mount. They were so rare that not much was known about them or their methods of
attack. When he first did battle with
the changeling, it was using the body of a bear youkai, which was easily
defeated. Though he destroyed the body,
it was not apparent until now that the ‘parasite’ itself had not also been
destroyed, but rather fled. He scoffed
at the idea itself that a demon referred to as a changeling had to rely on a
host for its power and form. Perhaps
Jaken would know a bit more about such youkai, having originated from a region
that once was a home to many such ‘parasites.’
Landing in
the camp and arranging Rin on her traveling bed, Sesshoumaru ignored the
bumbling Jaken as he scurried about in a panic upon seeing Rin and her
condition. Once he had her down and
examined her for any further injuries aside from the wound on her neck, he
turned to Jaken, freezing the toad in its place with an icy glare.
“Jaken.”
“Yes, Lord Sesshoumaru,” Jaken
blurted, falling to his knees and bowing many times, hoping to escape his
impending demise for his failure to protect the girl.
“Tell me what you know of
changeling youkai.”
“Yes, my Lord! They are a
despicable parasite that originates from the Southern lands, adapting their
hosts to their needs—“
“Adapting their hosts? Explain.”
“I…I am not certain Sesshoumaru-sama…I have never seen it, only heard that it is what they
do…I believe that is why they are referred to as ‘changeling.’ Once they have a
host they are able to modify it. Without a host they are no more than raw
youkai energy that dissipates itself after a while.”
“I see.” Sesshoumaru looked down at
Rin, noting that the wound on her neck had not stopped oozing blood. “Jaken, take Ah-Un and go retrieve a healer
knowledgeable on how to treat Rin. She has been attacked by a changeling
youkai.” He paused, looking back to Rin.
She was no longer in the throes of violent convulsions, but she still
panting and making choked noises. When
Sesshoumaru had not heard Jaken moving to follow his orders, he barked at the
imp, “Go! Now! And do not return unless you are successful in finding one.”
Upon hearing his Lord’s command, he
ran to Ah-Un, woke the dragon and took to the sky, unsure of where he would
find such a healer. Sesshoumaru watched
the imp disappear with the pack animal into the sky. He did not understand the implication of this
‘host adaptation,’ and reached down to lift Rin up so he could tend to the
wound on her neck. He smelled her for
any changes in her scent that would give him a clue of what to expect, if
anything at all, but he smelled nothing aside from her blood and original
delicate scent.
He was certain he had stopped the
youkai from possessing his ward, but due to his lack of knowledge on the
species, he wanted to take extra precaution, hence the healer. The fact that
she was at unrest in her unconscious state was extra cause for his concern.
Moving her hair aside and pulling the neck line of her kimono down to her
shoulder, he proceeded to lick the excess blood away from her skin, and clean
the wound. The minor cuts and scratches
could be dealt with later. Once he had made sure the bleeding was also halted,
he readjusted her clothing and laid her back down. He remained beside her with
a hand over her heart in an attempt to soothe her subconscious while monitoring
her condition, and kept guard in case the foolish changeling should try to make
good on its threat.
Thus ends chapter one.
Please review, constructive criticism is always welcome. I am also
revamping my previous work, “Ardent Trust.” You can expect to see that one up
sometime soon.
Coming up next, Sesshoumaru gets to experience first hand
the aftereffects of the changeling’s attack on Rin as she reacts violently to
its youkai intrusion on her human soul.
