Chapter 1: Quiet
Despair
The feudal era
was quietest when the sun disappeared completely beyond the horizon, as if the
entire world held its breath when night became whole. Kagome loved those few
heart beats where the world paused and she could indulge herself in the comfort
of her companions. Even if she was angry she was able to be grateful that she
was not alone in that moment of utter silence.
“Oi, bitch! What you smilin’ at?” Then Inuyasha had to speak and the moment
would die.
“Nothing that
concerns you dog boy.” She sneered as
she crossed her arms over her chest.
“Oh yeah?” Inuyasha countered.
Kagome scoffed.
“Yeah, and that was a lame retort.” Inuyasha growled as Sango, Miroku and
Shippo rolled their eyes at the two.
“They never
learn do they?” Shippo asked.
“Nope.” Replied Sango as their friends got into each others
faces. They watched as Kagome started jabbing Inuyasha’s chest with her finger screaming
colorful obscenities that did Inuyasha proud despite the odd nasty comment
about wolves vs. dogs every now and again and knew the fight was coming to a
close. Not because one would listen to the other but…
“SIT!” Inuyasha
kissed dirt as Kagome left in a huff. Their friends shook their heads again as
she stomped back, kicked him half heartedly then stomped back out of the clearing
muttering something about Kikyo, dog boys, and finding a demon vet who would do
neutering at this time of night.
“Inuyasha, when
will you learn not to compare her to Kikyo, especially in the middle of a
fight?”
Inuyasha
grumbled to himself as he picked himself off the ground when the subjugation
spell wore off. “I said it to piss her off and it obviously worked. But that’s
what she gets for saying she should have chosen to join Kouga’s pack instead of
ours. She said he was a better male than me! I mean, I know I’m not the best
alpha but damnit that was low!” The three shook their heads again.
Inuyasha and
Kagome had been bickering non stop for the past two weeks and it was getting
tiring. Sooner or later one of them was going to say something that they
wouldn’t be able to take back and their pack of misfits would be torn. Inuyasha
and Kagome were the leaders (that’s right, both of them, despite what Inuyasha
thinks) and if the leaders became divided so would the group.
“Should I go
follow Kagome?” Sango asked the other spectators as she stroked Kilala’s fur.
“No, she’ll come
back when she’s ready and she’ll scream if she gets into trouble.” Replied Miroku.
“I just hope
that she doesn’t run into any danger out there. Every night the fights have
ended with her running off and sooner or later something is going to find her.”
“Pssh. You think I’d let Kagome
get so far away that I can’t sense her?” Sango and Miroku turned to the
brooding hanyou. “She’s not that far away.” He muttered. “I may let her run out
of here but I know where she is and I’ll know if anything comes near her. She
may piss me off but I’m not going to let her get hurt because of me.” Miroku
and Sango looked at each other with wide eyes. They figured he hadn’t even
thought about her being hurt or wouldn’t really care because of their fights.
“Well then where
is she? What’s she do out there when she runs away?”
Inuyasha’s ears drooped as he looked at Miroku.
“If she wants
you to know, she’ll tell you.” He didn’t want to tell them that Kagome was
crying some yards away from the group. Inuyasha could smell her tears and
berated himself for hurting her but he didn’t know how to patch it up. He
sighed and tried not to worry about her or get too distracted by his guilty
conscious. If only he knew why there was such tension between them.
Kagome curled
herself into a ball hoping to at least make a smaller target for whatever
beasts may be haunting the forest. She didn’t like being unprotected out in the
wild but she didn’t want them to see her cry. She didn’t want to show her
weakness to her friends. She cried silently to herself making sure she didn’t
cry out or sob. She simply let the quiet tears stream down her cheeks as a warm
wind twisted in her hair.
She was just so
tired, tired of the quarrels, tired of going to sleep angry and waking up sad
and tired of waiting for Inuyasha to make up his mind about her. It was killing
her wondering if he cared for her at least one iota as much as she cared for
him. Did he wish she was Kikyo? She wasn’t completely blind. She knew he still
loved Kikyo but she also knew that he now saw her as herself. Sure sometimes he
would look at her and be reminded of Kikyo but he saw her.
When she had
first realized this she had been elated. It was a chance, a slim chance, that
he could love her. But he still just treated her like his shard detector.
Precious, important, but not loved. Never loved.
Always wanted for something she represented, something she could be, but
wasn’t. She was never wanted for herself, just what she could do or be for
people. She always had to be strong, always had to smile bravely and pretend
she wasn’t slowly going insane.
All she wanted was to be held, to have someone
be strong for her for a change. Yes she wasn’t as strong physically as everyone
else and they always ended up protecting her, but she was from a different
time! They grew up with fighting and learning how to use weapons where as she’s
only trained with weapons for the past year and a half. But she was still the
one giving encouragement to the others from the sidelines and screaming insults
at their opponents distracting them enough to give her friends an opening in
their opponents’ defenses. No one ever said ‘Good job, Kagome’ or ‘Awesome job hunting that shard down’. No, she was just a
tool with an expected use and if she didn’t fulfill her purpose properly she
was chastised and if she did everything perfectly she was ignored.
She couldn’t quit but she didn’t want to go
on. She was just the sister, the mother, the detector, the priestess, the
granddaughter, the reincarnation, the ningen, the shikon miko, the half breeds stupid bitch. She was just an image to everyone.
Nobody knew her and nobody wanted to.
That didn’t exactly bother her. It
didn’t matter to her if most of them only saw her as what they needed instead
of what she was, it didn’t matter for all except one.
And that’s why
she fought with him. That’s why she was so angry though she never voiced her
true feelings. She just wanted Inuyasha to want her for herself, to know her as
more than the reincarnation, the shard detector, or the shikon miko. She wanted
him to know what made her laugh, what made her cry, that she liked the stars
and always wanted to meet a real ewok, not the little
people in the suits but a real live one (yes she realizes that they aren’t
‘real’). She wanted him to know that she was afraid of being eaten by sharks
even in fresh water because she had once read about a type of shark that could
swim in both types of water. She wanted him to know everything about her what
made her who she was, but most importantly she wanted to be needed for herself,
nothing more.
Her body shook
from the stress of not letting out a sound. He would never want her for herself
because he didn’t love her. He didn’t even love the idea of her. His love was dead, well, undead and he would choose her.
Even if she was a walking corpse demon who fed off the souls of dead women.
Kagome spit on
the ground at the idea of Kikyo and was glad that her anger was able to chase
away her despair for at least a moment. How is it that he couldn’t see what she
was? How is it that he could allow a creature like that to wear the skin of his
long dead love? He couldn’t have loved something that could be so consumed by
hate and vengeance as to give the only real threat in the world most of the
shikon jewel. A miko wouldn’t have done that, especially a shikon miko, retired
or otherwise.
He had to see
and therefore he did see. It simply didn’t matter to him. He loved the flesh
the creature wore more than his love for stopping the evil that inhabited it.
He’d rather believe that she was alive than honoring her memory and destroying
the creature that called herself Kikyo.
Kagome let
herself fall to the side. She was dried up and exhausted in the way that only
crying out your soul can make you. She didn’t want to move and probably
couldn’t. She had hit rock bottom and didn’t know if she wanted to pull herself
up again. What was there to fight for? Hope? Hope that he might fulfill her
wishes for once? Hope that she might be wanted for who she was instead of what
she could do? Why should she go on doing what made her so unhappy?
A little boys
slackened face flickered over her vision, a jewel shard lying in the demon
blood beside him. Kagome squeezed her eyes shut as a new pain laced in her
heart. It was her fault the jewel shattered, her fault that innocents were
being injured because of it, her fault that a little kid could pick up the
shiny rock only to be eaten by a power hungry demon. She didn’t deserve what
she desired because she had committed an almost unforgivable sin. She would go
on because she must. She would go on to atone for her sins.
Kagome took a
deep shuddering breath and let it out slowly. She then righted herself and
wiped the tear trails away. When she figured she was looking as good as she was
going to get, she stood up and brushed herself off. She was empty inside and
for that she was grateful. She had found a reason to continue her painful
journey, as she did every night, and turned to go back to camp when a familiar
feeling welled up inside of her. She turned her head and stared off into the
night as the feeling of eyes staring at her tickled across her skin. Something
was out there, something that she recognized but couldn’t place. It wasn’t an aura,
not really, but it was…something. Kagome frowned.
“Whoever you
are, I would appreciate it if you didn’t stare. And at least make yourself known instead of spying on someone. That’s just
rude, sneaking around in the night like a rat. Maybe that’s what you are, a
filthy rat demon flitting about in an unseemly manner.”
“You will not
speak to me that way, ningen.” Kagome smiled as the speaker made himself known. She had assumed that it was him since he was
the only one who was powerful enough to block his scent and his aura enough
that Inuyasha hadn’t sensed him yet. She tilted her head at him when he stepped
close enough to her so that she could see him in the pale moonlight. As always
her breath caught in her throat at his magnificence and as always she pretended
she wasn’t moved by it.
“Good evening,
Lord Sesshomaru. And what, pray tell, did I do to deserve your pleasant company
on a night like tonight?”
Sesshomaru quirked an elegant white eyebrow at the honorific title.
“My business is my own, miko. Why are you out in the night unprotected?”
Kagome’s stomach
tilted with the sound of his voice but kept up her strong façade. “I’m not
unprotected. In a few moments Inuyasha will realize that I’m not speaking to
myself and he will fly in here sword swinging. If I were you I would state my
business quickly before we are interrupted.” Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes at
her and she shrugged. “Of course I’m not you and you’ve probably come here to
antagonize me as all the others do to rile up Inuyasha so you can try to kill
him again. Notice how I say try.” She
didn’t know why she was speaking so disrespectfully to him, but she didn’t need
this right now. The quick pump of adrenaline that had shot into her at his
arrival was quickly vanishing and suddenly she just wanted to go to bed, but
instead here was the beautiful killing machine himself staring at her like she
should be on her knees begging for forgiveness from his great and perfect self.
“You will not
speak to me in such a manner, wench.”
Kagome sighed
weakly. “I will speak to you in which ever way I please, Sesshomaru. Not
because I think I’m your better or your equal but because I’m tired and I don’t
have it in me to be polite.” She ground her teeth. “And your death stare is
getting really annoying and I would appreciate it if you would either tell
me what you want or let me go to bed because I’ve had a rough night and I don’t
want to deal with anymore of this shit!” Her hands had clenched and she was
breathing hard. The emptiness she had cried so hard to gain was gone and she
was starting to feel her angry despair all over again. Damnit to the fifth hell! Kagome hugged tightly herself and leaned
against a tree. “What do you want, Sesshomaru?” she whispered.
Sesshomaru
stared at the girl and realized he had never seen her so broken before. He
often checked up on his brother to see how he fared and to check on how strong
he had become. He allowed everyone to believe that he hated his younger
brother, and Inuyasha did annoy him to no end, but he was an inu and inu’s were pack animals.
Inuyasha was his only living relative and even if Inuyasha drove him insane he
still watched out for him.
On his many
checkups he had seen this young girl who stood beside his younger brother. She
was an enigma. She was strong and proud, a little inexperienced sure, but she
was a decent alpha bitch and he felt shamed that his brother treated her so
poorly. Not because he cared about her, but his brother should have more honor
than to treat the alpha bitch of his pack like an omega. His inferior brother
was always doing foolish things to harm his bitch and she just took it instead
of getting a new alpha male which confused him to no end.
He had begun
watching only her to try to understand her and understand why she put up with
his brothers antics and also why she acted so strangely. After watching her for
a while he had come to realize that she was a different person with each of her
companions. She had one persona for the other female ningen, one for the fox
kit, one for the monk, one for Inuyasha, and one for the entire group. She even
had subtle different personas for each of the enemies they fought.
He didn’t
understand how someone could be so many different people. At first he had
assumed she was slightly insane, then he shrugged off
that possibility. A crazy person wouldn’t be the keeper of the Shikon Jewel,
reincarnation or not. So there had to be another reason. He had spoken to her
alone every now and again trying to learn her mind but she was short and
guarded to him which was understandable.
Then she started
wandering the forest alone at night and crying for no apparent reason. He knew
it had something to do with his brother but she never spoke, she never made a
sound, she just let her tears fall then she would clean up and go right back to
her friends. It was a strange weakness but one that intrigued him none the
less.
“Why were you
crying?” he asked her with his unemotional voice.
Kagome sighed
and looked down. “It’s none of your business, Sesshomaru.” She said quietly,
knowing he would hear. “I’m stressed, that’s all. What does it matter to you
anyhow?” Her voice was flat and as unemotional as his. She looked back up at
him with sad, empty eyes and he was surprised that he was moved by them.
“It doesn’t
matter, I was just curious.”
“Why are you
here anyway? Don’t you have some demons to kill and some land to protect?” A
deep, deep, deep part of Kagome was
in awe at how casually she was speaking to the ice king despite the few times
he had appeared out of no where to talk to her, which confused her to no end.
Why did he seek her out? What did he have to gain by speaking with her? If she
hadn’t felt so numb she probably would have giggled at the fact that she had
frequent visits from a very attractive
taiyoukai. As it was she simply looked up at him with
empty eyes into his equally cold ones and wondered about the mystery that was
Sesshomaru.
“I am here
fulfilling my duties as Lord of the Western Lands.”
“And what duties
are those?”
“Again, my
business is my own.”
Kagome sighed
and leaned her head back. “If you’re not going to tell me what you want, why
you were spying on me or why you care what state I’m in then I’m just going to
go. I don’t want to play twenty questions with you and I don’t want to stand
out here all night waiting for Inuyasha to come so you two can battle and I get
even less sleep. So if you have
something to say, then say it, otherwise, goodnight, Lord Sesshomaru.” Kagome
pushed off from the tree and turned her back on Sesshomaru. She was only two
steps away when his voice stopped her.
“I want to know
why you stay with him.”
Kagome looked
back at him. “I want to know why you care.” He just stared at her and she
figured she wasn’t going to get an answer. In turn she shouldn’t answer him,
but… “I honestly don’t know, Sesshomaru. Sometimes I think it’s because I love
him, sometimes I think it’s because I like to punish myself. Other times I
think it’s because he’s my friend and I simply don’t want to join any other
group. Besides no other group would have me. Sure
Kouga would accept me with open arms, but I think I’d go crazy faster if I
joined up with him, what with his ‘my woman’ bullshit when he doesn’t know me.”
Kagome lowered her eyes. “But no one knows me do they? Nobody wants to.” Kagome
sighed and turned to go again.
“You could join
me.”
That stopped
her. She turned around and stared at him. “What?”
The killing
perfection stared at her with his cold, golden eyes. His hair floated in the
night wind and the moon flitted across his silhouette making him seem ethereal and
yet she could swear he looked nervous. “You may join me if you wish.”
Kagome walked
back to him until she was only a few steps away. She stared into his eyes
looking for an answer. “Why?” she asked when his eyes remained mute. He blinked
at her and remained quiet. Kagome stared at him while she thought about it. She
got an image of her in Rin’s dress frolicking around Sesshomaru and having that
icky toad Jaken chasing after her. She tried to hide
a shudder.
“As much as I
appreciate your offer I have to decline.”
“Why?” he asked.
He was a little perplexed at why she wouldn’t choose to join the better alpha
and he had seen her shudder so he wondered if he disgusted her in some way.
“Inuyasha may
not treat me well, and he may never see me as anything but a shard detector,
but at least he won’t treat me as completely inferior to him which you do
without thinking, no offense. And besides, I don’t know your motives for asking
me to join you. Even if you are extremely attractive I won’t betray my friends
for you for no reason.”
Sesshomaru let
the tiniest of smirks tip the corner of his lip. “Attractive am I?”
Kagome winced.
“Did I say that?” Man I must be more
tired than I thought.
“I believe you
said ‘extremely attractive’ actually.”
Kagome sighed
again. He made her feel like sighing a lot. “Yes, well. You are. You know it, I
know it, everyone knows it. Now let’s move on with
life.” She began walking away again and Sesshomaru felt an unfamiliar twinge in
his chest. He realized suddenly it was jealousy. He was jealous of his brother
that he had an alpha such as this girl, this simple human girl. Something must really be wrong with him.
“Girl.” He watched her stop again but she didn’t turn her
head to look at him she just tilted her head enough so that he would hear her.
“My name is
Kagome. I know you know my name and I would appreciate being called by my name
rather than girl, wench, bitch, ningen or any other name that is not ‘Kagome’.
In turn I will continue to call you Sesshomaru instead of puppy, fluffy, mad
dog or Ice King.” She was about to walk away again when a growl split the air
and she realized she may have just gone too far.
“Do not speak to
this Sesshomaru in such a manner, wench.”
Anger flared
inside of Kagome. She was having a really
difficult time keeping her emotions in check but for the moment she didn’t
care. “Why not, puppy?”
Sesshomaru
growled again. “You will not speak to someone who is your-”
“My what?” Kagome interrupted, “My superior? How are you
superior to me? You’re just a bully. Yeah, you could kill me, woop-de-fuckin-do. A pointy stick could kill me too. Are
you a pointy stick, Sesshomaru?” Sesshomaru growled and cracked the knuckles of
his one hand as poison dripped from his hand. Kagome was surprised to feel that
she wasn’t afraid. But what was even more surprising was that a part of her was
anticipatory and excited.
Kagome dared him
with her eyes to attack. She had no weapon and she didn’t even step into a
defensive stance. She stood there and waited for him to kill her, waited for
the comfort of death. When she realized that she wanted to die she shivered and
hated herself just a little bit more for thinking such things when she still
had a mission to complete. She watched Sesshomaru battle himself for control
and wondered why he stayed his hand. No matter, she was tired of all this
mysterious crap and decided to take matters into her own hands.
“Well, if you’re
not going to kill me...” Kagome flicked a bit of her spiritual powers at him.
It flitted across his skin but did not burn him though it did make the hairs on
his arm stand on end. When the flare of power went from his toes to the top of
his head he felt his control over himself twitch and he growled at her. She
only shrugged at him. “Sorry but if you’re not going to fight me I’ll just give
you someone else to attack.” Inuyasha burst through the trees in the next
heartbeat as Sesshomaru’s newly freed aura reached him.
“Kagome! Get away from him. Sesshomaru, you bastard, what do
you want?”
“I’ve been
trying to get him to tell me that for the past twenty minutes.” Kagome
muttered,
Sesshomaru
glared at her before shifting his gaze to Inuyasha. “As I told your little
human wench, my business is my own.” Sesshomaru’s eyes flicked to Kagome as an
impressive human growl passed her lips.
“It is my
business if it involves you sneaking around my pack, Sesshomaru.” Inuyasha
stepped a bit in front of Kagome. He didn’t like the way Sesshomaru’s eyes kept
traveling back to her nor did he like how Kagome
seemed to be showing him the same interested attention.
“Go away now,
fluffy.” She sneered much to Inuyasha’s shock. “Go dig up some bones or
something.” Sesshomaru growled a warning at her from deep down in his throat.
“Watch what you
say, girl.”
Kagome pushed a
bit pass Inuyasha. “Watch what you say,
puppy. I told you my deal and I aim to live by it even if you do get the courage to rip out my throat
because I call you names.”
Inuyasha’s jaw
dropped. “Kagome!” he whispered at her, “What are you doing? Just stay quiet
and let me do the talking!”
Kagome rolled
her eyes at him. “You suck at talking. Now, Sesshomaru, are you going to be the
respectable lord you are or are you going to be a jerk?”
Sesshomaru
growled but let his body relax. “Alright, Kagome. But just remember that
you get this one free ticket from pain because my little brother has already
dealt that hand to you. If you ever
speak to me in that manner again you will wish I had killed you this night.”
Kagome nodded.
“Alright then, as long as we’re clear that if you kill me because you called me
a name and I retaliated it’s your fault anyway.” She patted Inuyasha’s shoulder
and began walking away from the confused hanyou and the stoic demon.
“Goodnight, Sesshomaru. Sweet dreams if you even have them. See you at the
camp, Inuyasha. If you fight try not to be too loud, I want to get at least some sleep tonight.” The two inu’s watched her disappear into the foliage before turning
back to one another.
“Uh…what just
happened?”
Sesshomaru
fought the urge to roll his eyes at his younger brother. “It matters not,
Inuyasha.” Sesshomaru then turned and began walking away.
“Hey, wait!”
Inuyasha called causing Sesshomaru to pause. “What’re you doing here if you’re
not here to fight? And what were you talking about with Kagome?”
“My business is
my own and if she wants you to know that she’ll tell you, as for now I simply
suggest you begin treating the alpha female of your pack with more respect. I
don’t want you dishonoring our family anymore.” With that Sesshomaru vanished
into the night leaving the thoroughly confused hanyou staring at where he just
stood.
