Impatient
as always, InuYasha crouched on the edge of the well complaining as Kagome
climbed up with no help what so ever from the hanyou.
His golden eyes were fixed on drilling holes into the back of her skull and his
adorable doggie ears were turned back against his head in annoyance. Without a
glance to the sky he knew the sun had already started its long journey towards
the west which meant one thing - she was late.
“Why
must you always take so long in your stupid era,” the inu-youkai roared.
“There’s nothing important there like jewel shards or anything. I swear I’m
going to seal this well up so you can never go back!”
With
a huff Kagome finally made it out of the well and tossed her stuffed backpack
over the rim just like every other time before. She had completely tuned
InuYasha out having gotten use to his complaints over the many years they’ve
traveled together. Using the ‘Sit’ command wasn’t even worth the time or
effort, what little bit it required. If she did, it would only cause more
complaints and whining, bringing forth some rude comment from her companion’s
mouth, then another “Sit” from hers along with more anger and another argument
about being unfair or unreasonable, leading to another “Sit” continuing in that
pattern until someone became tired. It truly was a vicious cycle when it came
to these two opposites.
The
reason she went back to her own time -though he never cared to ask- was to take
some tests, change her clothes, clean her sleeping bag, gather more medical
supplies, and of course to buy more of his precious
ramen. God forbid she forgot his ramen.
She
was brought back to the present moment when she realized he had yet to stop
bitching about how she shouldn’t go back to her own time until all the jewel
shards had been found. Rolling her eyes at him she searched for one of his
favorite noodle soups, pulled it out and waved it in front of his nose.
“And
further more about this baka school thing . . .” he looked up at the smell of
the soup. “OH! You brought more! I’m starving.”
Kagome
could but shake her head, just like a domestic pet dog food once again changed
his mind about her traveling. She laughed to herself at the thought of obedience
training and a begging InuYasha for his next treat. If only she could convince
him to join the ‘battle’ technique classes.
InuYasha
quickly grabbed the soup drooling slightly from his mouth with much excitement
in his eyes begging her to hurry and go to Kaede’s in order to make the nearly
instant meal. If he had a tail she was sure it would be wagging.
She
took a moment to stare at the adorable hanyo. With his white ears, little nose,
golden eyes, and well built body that was carved from all of their traveling
and fighting of demons, it was amazing for her to never have fallen for him.
She knew deep down she had always had feelings for him but could and would
never say anything or even admit to the extent of her emotions towards him,
including to herself. How could she when she would only be second to her,
InuYasha’s first love, Kikyo? Especially after all of those nights he would
disappear into the forest just to converse with her.
The
young woman shook those hurtful thoughts out of her head. There was nothing she
could do to change the way InuYasha felt about her previous life’s self or her
for that matter and in all honesty she doubted she would if she had the chance.
After all if Kikyo hadn’t lived and died when she did Kagome would have never
traveled to this time and met InuYasha. So having made up her mind a long time
ago, Kagome knew her place and wasn’t going to destroy the pleasant moment of
the present with ugly memories of the past. She had the here and now and though
it was on borrowed time, she accepted things for the way they were, no matter
how painful it was to think about.
“Can
we go to Kaede’s now, Kagome? I’m really hungry and I think Miroku has come
back with some more information on the whereabouts of some jewel shards. I know
Shippo’s really missed you. He’s been complaining all day. Bit my ear too. And
most likely Sango is going to want you to go with her to the springs leaving us
guys alone. Why do you do that any way, you know that lecherous monk is going
to try and sneak up on you both to get a peek at whatever secret items it is
you are hiding, I don’t care since its not a jewel shard.”
And
so the complaining began again. With a heavy sigh Kagome pointed back to his
salty treat.
“Oh yeah! Can we go now? Please?”
With
a smile Kagome laughed to herself. “Let’s go,” she said as she picked up her
pack placing it over her shoulder and climbed onto InuYasha. As she mounted him
he placed the package of noodles in his mouth allowing his hands to be free in
order to hold her securely in place. Before she could get comfortable he leapt
into the air and through the trees causing her to let out a small gasp.
The
first jump threw her off slightly and her heart skipped a beat. Holding on
tightly to InuYasha’s shoulders seemed to be the only thing that kept her from
falling. Of course it had always been like that, ever since the beginning, that
first leap would most likely always scare her. She did trust InuYasha, it was
his forest after all and he had lived there for a long while before being
pinned to the Goshinboku. He knew every tree,
every branch, and every leaf in his forest. He knew what branches were strong,
what limbs were weak, what arms were good for resting and all the best views,
but it still scared her.
Kagome
gripped firmly onto InuYasha and constricted her hold on his waist with her
legs. She loosened up only when she took in a deep whiff of his smell. It
always calmed her in the tensest of moments, that smell of sun and cherry
blossoms mixed with his sweet oils let her know she was safe. His scent coursed
through her body like a drug, intoxicating and overwhelming. Nothing mattered,
day or night, as long as he was near. The one thing she never realized was that
InuYasha knew all of this.
In
the beginning it was simply business to have her travel on his back. It made
more sense due to the fact that carrying her everywhere was faster than walking
or traveling on bike. But now things were different, he used it just as an
excuse to have her close to him. He loved the way she felt against his back
especially when jumping from tree to tree because she held herself closer to
his body and in this position he was able to feel the soft skin of her thighs
and calves.
With
her on his back and his hands holding her in place, he felt every twitch, heard
every squeak and smelled every mood change. He got a kick out of her fear with
the first jump and enjoyed the fact that his scent eased her tension. He’d
known from their first battles together that she would get real close to him,
take a deep breath and gain more strength. It amazed him how such a small act
could give someone such great power, even though it was the same for him.
Kagome was always the cause for the increase in his vigor but at moments like
this he simply felt at peace.
With
her so close, time almost stood still. Nothing ever mattered, it was just the
two of them and the world was theirs for the taking. No one had ever made him
feel this way, not even Kikyo, though he felt that she did come close.
He
thought they were the same in the beginning, sharing the same soul and looking
as if they were twins, but over time he noticed the differences. Kagome
accepted him for how and who he was, Kikyo wished for him to be human. Kagome
opened herself to him in front of anyone and everyone, Kikyo only paid him mind
when they were alone. Kagome made him delicious food like ramen, Kikyo only
ever gave him leftovers after she and Kaede
were done eating. And the best part of Kagome was the fact that she was always
right by his side where as Kikyo had him follow her at a distance until there
was no other living soul around.
InuYasha’s
only regret was not having noticed it all sooner. Kikyo would always have a
place in his heart, being his first love or infatuation, but now Kagome had it
within her delicate hands. He hoped and prayed nearly every night that she
would always stay with him, and of course used the jewel shards as an excuse to
always have her near, but he feared the end of their journeys. He often
wondered what would happen when the jewel was complete and Naraku was dead.
Would Kagome be able to stay in his time, or would she leave forever to her own
era, never to return again.
But
now was not the time to think of that, now was their freedom together away from
the hassles of life and the tasks of each day. Now was their time to reach for
the skies and enjoy each other’s company and it seemed to InuYasha that Kagome
loved this moment just as much as he.
She
almost seemed to get warmer between her legs as he felt heat increase on his
back. The dog demon started to blush bright red with the thought but quickly
brushed any hentai thoughts out of his mind and decided that it was from all
the excitement of jumping through the trees. Oh Kami, he was becoming more like
Miroku each day.
Together
in person but alone in individual thought, both the young teenager and the
hanyo promised themselves that even if they couldn’t have each other forever,
they would always have this moment, running as one to whatever destination they
were heading, side by side, heart to heart, no matter what the problem may be.
Naraku was no match for them and held no power over their hearts. They both had
only one thing that could make them falter on their path – InuYasha’s fear of
the future and Kagome’s fear of the past. They sighed to themselves and thought
‘I’ll find a way, some day, to make this
last forever.’
The
moment’s trance was cut off when they came through to the end of the forest
with the village in sight. Now the sun was setting and the skies were full of colors
that made the meadows of glorious flowers bow down in shame of their ugliness.
Each
hut was visible with smoke coming up from the chimneys. Kaede’s was near the
bottom of the stairs to the shine where Kikyo’s ashes once laid in peace.
Slight laughter from the monk, old priestess, demon slayer and small kitsune
could be heard. The smell of food was already in the air meaning most likely
there would be no room for ramen to be made. Poor InuYasha.
He
stopped at the edge of the forest and let Kagome down; they were to walk to the
rest of the way to further sustain their moment of private peace. Removing the
ramen from his mouth he stared at it a little sad. He would have to wait until
tomorrow to have his precious meal.
Both
of the companions were slightly agitated by the sight of the village but
grateful to be ‘home.’ InuYasha had taken the long way to get back to the
village, which Kagome had already known but it didn’t matter to her. She just
smiled at the thought of InuYasha not wanting to let her go so soon. Taking a
deep breath she stared at him with a loving eye lost in thought and wonderment
about her dear friend.
InuYasha
glared down at the village, wishing that it were placed further away from the
well. Even when taking the long way back it never seemed long enough. He hoped
Kagome didn’t notice and became uneasy as he felt her gaze upon him. Fear shot
through his body paralyzing him to the spot as if he were a deer in headlights.
He slowly turned his eyes to look at the young girl and when they made eye
contact he almost jumped. ‘Does she know?’
he thought to himself.
“What
are you staring at?” He nearly barked at her. “You got something in your eye?”
She
blinked away the haze of her thoughts to seriously look at him and shook her
head. “No nothing. Just, thank you InuYasha.”
Cautiously
he asked her “For what?”
“For being such a good friend.”
“Feh, whatever,” was all he could muster as he fell into a
slight daze by her soft words. They were both unexpected and somehow painful.
Kagome
laughed and jumped at the hanyo hitting him in the arm. “Race you to Kaede’s!”
She
ran off ahead of InuYasha who still remained slightly stunned by her words. ‘Why just a friend?’
He
snapped out of his daze when he realized how far Kagome was in front of him.
“Hey wait up! Don’t make me catch you!” Even with all that weight from her
backpack she was still fast. He quickly put the ramen soup into his shirt and
darted off after her.
They
laughed in playful harmony as the setting sun gave way to the moonlit night
showing the glory that was the universe above them. In the far distance was the
slight cooing of the evening birds and chirping of the crickets but things all
went still as screeches unheard to the village grew closer. The quiet footsteps
of the undead priestess with her soul collectors encircling her were coming to
see what all the laughter was about.
“InuYasha,
we have unfinished business to attend to. I hope you have not forgotten.”
~*~End Chapter One~*~
A/N:
Thank you for reading my first fanfic
“In the Mountains!” This completes the first chapter but no worries
there are more to come. Now I know it’s
not the most original idea between InuYasha and Kagome but it’s a story that’s
been on my mind for two years and wouldn’t leave me alone.
Any way, I
hoped you enjoyed it and will read the next chapter. I will try and post every
week, but don’t hold me accountable if I’m a little late. It takes me a while
to be fully happy with each chapter.
Please feel
free to critic and leave comments. I’m not a little kid so I can take some of
the harsher critics, just please don’t be rude.
Thank you again for reading the
first chapter of “In the Mountains.”
See you next time!
Much Love,
~*Becca
