I Promise You: Chapter 1
“How can you do this to me?” she cried angrily, “How can you do this to us?” She gripped his shoulder forcefully. He flung her away. “You must have seen this coming.” he said calmly, “I have no love for you, Amarante.” “You would rather have that human whore,” she spat angrily. His hand slid through the air fast landing on her cheek. “Izayoi is my bride. I won’t allow you to belittle her.” “Bride,” she exclaimed with a laugh, “Have you forgotten that you’re already married? I am your bride and he’s your son.” She pointed to the boy at her side. His calm gold eyes were staring confused at Inutaisho. Long glossy strands of silver hair flitted across his round face covering his violet crescent mark and obscuring the magenta marks that cover his white cheeks. The boy’s richly colored silk kimono fluttered in the wind. The bright red’s and blues brought out the creamy white of his skin and made his golden eyes even brighter. He stood stock still as Inutaisho stared at him, his eyes glowing angrily. “You tricked me, Amarante.” he said, “I never wanted this child. He’ll never be my son.” “But father I…”Sesshoumaru said his voice controlled. “Don’t call me father,” he said striking Sesshoumaru hard, “I never wanted you. Inuyasha is my son. You will never be.” Sesshoumaru lifted himself from the ground, blood spewing from his mouth. “I am your son.” he said coldly, “I will always be your son, Father.” Inutaisho’s fist connected with Sesshoumaru’s face hard. Inutaisho towered over him aiming a kick to his stomach. “Stop,” a women’s voice resounded behind him, “please stop.” She rushed to Sesshoumaru’s side, her black hair falling haphazardly around her face as she slid to her knees. Her olive tanned face beautiful in the moonlight, gray-green eyes shined with benevolence as she stared. She rested a hand on the young boy’s shoulder. He smacked her hand away, “Don’t touch me, human.” Inutaisho growled at him in warning. “I have been kind to you, Amarante.” he said, “I will allow you to stay, but you are no longer my wife.” Amarante pulled herself to her feet trying to keep her regal bearing even as tears threatened to fall. She pulled Sesshoumaru to his feet and stared despairingly at the blood slipping from his mouth and the small purple bruise on his cheek. She turned her cold violet eyes back to Inutaishou. “You may conceal us all you want,” she said, “We will not be the only one against this match.” She rushed into the castle, not sparing a second glance at her supposed husband. In the months that passed Izayoi tried wholeheartedly to befriend Sesshoumaru and Amarante, but it all proved in vain. “Why do you continue to come here?” Sesshoumaru said angrily as he smacked a dish of fruits out of her hand, “I don’t want you here, disgraceful human. I hate distasteful beasts like you.” He pushed her hard causing her to lose balance and topple to the floor. “Leave,” he said coldly before turning away from her. She jerked to her feet and ran from the room, tears flowing down her cheeks. She flung herself down in the garden. “Izayoi, what’s the matter, my love.” He knelt down beside her and smoothed her hair away from her face. "How can such a beautiful child say such horrible things?" Anger sparked in Inutaishou eyes as he pulled her into a hug. He held her like that for a while. Meanwhile, Sesshoumaru was calm and unknowing. He could not feel the anger that was currently directing itself at him. Chrysanthemums, irises, and Sakura blossoms made a pungent perfume surrounding him as he sat in the garden, his eyes downcast and staring at his small, long fingers. “Foolish human,” he said to himself, “Why does she keep coming? Is she really stupid enough to believe I would ever accept her?” He clenched his fists, his teeth gritted slightly. “Are you ok?” it was a small voice happy, young. He jerked his head up. His eyes met with downy colored hair that ran down the small boy’s back to his waist, the white of his skin made the rosy hue of his cheeks and lips stand out, and the red of his kimono contrasted nicely with the pale honeyed eyes that shined with innocence and depth. Sesshoumaru’s eyes finally settled on two swiveling puppy ears. “Leave me,” Sesshoumaru said sternly. “Wow,” the boy exclaimed stepping closer to him. His gaze was intense and made Sesshoumaru self conscience. “Your eyes are like Otoosan’s,” he exclaimed. "Don’t be ridiculous,” Sesshoumaru said with a slight hint of annoyance. “I can’t get my eyes to look cold and stern.” he said, “Okaason says I have her eyes.” He stepped closer to Sesshoumaru completely unafraid of the strong, regal demon. His hand reached out suddenly to brush soft fingers along the crescent moon that rests on Sesshoumaru’s forehead. Sesshoumaru gripped his forearm roughly and held it away from him. “What do you think you are doing?” he growled out, “Don’t touch me.” “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” Inuyasha cried with a grimace. Seeshoumaru held back his shock as he felt the frailty of Inuyasha’s arm. It was small, almost sticklike. “He’s so small,” he thought. Inuyasha’s head barely reached his shoulder. His body was well hidden in the kimono, but Sesshoumaru could see no baby fat. His face was rounded and babyish, but his body seemed stunted and delicate. Sesshoumaru released him and stood. “My names Inuyasha.” he said cheerily, “What’s yours?” “Sesshoumaru,” he said with a glare. “Sess…Sess,” Inuyasha started, “Sessh-oniisan, lets go play.” “Sessh-onisan,”Seshoumaru thought angrily, “How dare he?” “I have no intention of playing with you, hanyou.”Sesshoumaru said, “My only wish is to see you dead.” “Ok,” Inuyasha spouted with a smile, “I’ll make you a deal, Oniisan. If you can catch me, I’ll let you kill me.” Inuyasha took off in a fast sprint with Sesshoumaru trailing closely behind him. Sesshoumaru eyes widened as Inuyasha’s body arched gracefully into the air and landed on a branch. “C’mon, Sessh-Oniisan.” he said tauntingly, “You’re making this too easy.” He leapt from branch to branch as if weightless. “As if I’d lose to a hanyou,” Sesshoumaru thought as he sped through the trees. Sakura blossoms glittered through the air as they sped to the dense forest on the edge of the castle. Sesshoumaru stilled as he entered the forest. He stared around the forest surprised that Inuyasha could hide so well. Laughter sounded to the right of him. He turned toward the sound continuing to jump from branch to branch. “Oniisan, I’ll leave you behind if you don’t hurry.” He dropped cautiously to a branch and stared across the clearing that was in front of him. The hanyou was nowhere in sight. His smell was everywhere. It seemed to permeate the very air he breathed. He stared at the green field then at the bushes that outlined the woods. “Too easy,” he thought smugly as he dropped to the ground walking over to the bushes. “Tricked you,” Inuyasha said as he laughed and leapt out of a tree that was two feet away from the one Sesshoumaru just vacated. Sesshoumaru cursed himself and leapt after the child. Inuyasha was darting from branch to branch, his feet barely touching wood before he was in the air again. Sesshoumaru applied more speed as Inuyasha leaped hard to meet a branch two to three feet in front of him. His hand shot out the grip the hanyou’s ankle. This caused them both to fall. They hit the ground hard with Inuyasha leaping to his feet only to be pushed to the ground as Sesshoumaru gripped his shoulders. “Sessh-Oniisan,” Inuyasha said his voice breathless, “You caught me.” “Are you prepared to die, hanyou.” Sesshoumaru said as he slid a clawed finger to Inuyasha’s neck. Inuyasha smiled softly then slid his eyes shut. He pushed his head up, so his neck was completely bared to Sesshoumaru. The older demon was frozen in shock, his claw still pressed on soft skin. His eyes drifted over the delicate milk white skin that he was happily allowed to destroy. He let his fingers drift across the exposed flesh and felt his anger ebb. He lifted himself off of Inuyasha’s slim body. “This is a pointless waist of my energy. I won’t kill something so useless and weak.” Inuyasha pulled himself off the soft grass and smiled. “Do you want to play s’more, Sessh-Oniisan?” “I don’t even want to look at you, hanyou.” “Aww, Sessh-oniisan.” Inuyasha simpered, “Don’t be mean?” “Stop calling me that.” he said, “My name is Sesshoumaru. I won’t have you besmirching it.” “Inuyasha, Inuyasha,” a grating voice whispered through the trees, “Where are you? Get over here.” “Bye, Sessh-oniichan,” he said as he darted through the trees. Sesshoumaru followed behind the running boy slowly. “Where were you?” a harsh voice entered Sesshoumaru’s ears. He stared at a tall dark haired fox demon, his eyes, which were a glossy brown, were pointed at the hanyou with distaste. The firm set features of his mouth were pulled into a scowl. “You had me searching everywhere.” he gripped Inuyasha’s arm and shook him slightly, “Are you listening to me?” Inuyasha nodded despondently.' “You have lessons today.” he said, “I’m not going to be reprimanded because you missed them. Do I make myself clear?” Inuyasha mumbled a yes as he stared at the ground. He pulled Inuyasha’s chin up roughly. “I said, ‘do I make myself clear.’” “Yes, Honjou-san.” Inuyasha grimaced as the hold on him tightened. Honjou gripped Inuyasha arm and jerked him up the dark redwood steps. Sesshoumaru shook his head slightly as he slipped back into his own room quietly. Inutaisho was rubbing small circles in his beloveds back as she cried. “I’m so sorry,” she said between sobs, “I’m causing all these problems. I’m so useless. I can’t get one little boy to like me. It’s my own fault for coming here, for thinking this could work. I was selfish.” She looked up at him, her grey-green eye still washed with tears. “I thought that I was doing this for Inuyasha. I thought that if I brought him here, he could finally be accepted, but that wasn’t the real reason.” she sobbed loudly as she continued, “I was so tired of hiding, so tired of keeping the love that we shared secret. I think in my heart I wanted her to know. I wanted her to know the love that we shared, and I wanted her to see what our love had created. I was so naïve. There is no place for me here.” “Your place is beside me always, Izayoi.” he said as he set her into the futon and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. She smiled at him weakly as she closed her eyes. He waited until he knew she was sleeping to slip out of the shoji. He stormed into the west end of the castle and pushed open the shoji to Sesshoumaru’s room. Sesshoumaru looked up from his calligraphy lesson as his father stormed in. He grabbed the small boy by his kimono and jerked him out of his seat. “You will apologize to Izayoi.” he said, “You will beg for her forgiveness.” “I will beg nothing from your human whore,” he said calmly as he stared up at his father. Inutaisho’s fist cut through the air fast and connected with the young youkai’s stomach. Sesshoumaru sputtered and coughed but stood his ground. “You will not disrespect, my bride,” he said angrily. “Your bride is a disgrace,” Sesshoumaru’s eyes sparkled wildly, “So, is that bastard son of hers.” A low growl emanated from the older youkai. He gripped his son’s neck and lifting him off the ground flung him forcefully away from him. Sesshoumaru’s body flew as if weightless and connected with the hard redwood corner of the shoji screen. Inutaisho watched him slide to the ground as if in slow motion. He advanced on the still child, his fingers clenched and eyes ablaze. He froze as he watched glossy silver strands seep to vermilion as crimson liquid slipped languidly beneath his head. The shoji door opened suddenly and a scream was a heard. “Sesshoumaru,” Amarante cried wildly as she flung herself beside her child. Hearing her scream, servants rushed into the room. Seeing the limp body of Sesshoumaru his arm outstretched and eyes closed, many of them gasped both shocked and appalled. One servant rushed out of the room calling for a healer frantically. Inutaisho stood in place just watching as Amarante tried to staunch the blood flow with her kimono. The healer Masami rushed into the room. She stared at the prone figure of Sesshoumaru then turned her cold silver eyes on him. There was an accusation in her eyes, an all knowing that made his stomach clench and his heart pained. “What have I done?” Inutaisho’s eyes fallowed the rhythmic almost, artistic pattern Sesshoumaru’s blood made as it dripped off the boy’s slim fingers. His eyes never wavered from his son’s visage as his limp body was carried out the room.
