Chapter one
Kagome looked on as the battle raged. Miroku and Sango were battling all the low lever demons that came at them with Kirara’s help. To her left, Kouga and some of his pack were busy taking their revenge on Kagura. With a deep sigh she looked straight ahead and watched as two demons fought a deranged half demon; one demon being a full blooded inu taiyoukai and the other being his finally acknowledged half brother. It was ending, she could feel it. This part of her life that meant so much to her was coming to an end. Deep down she did not want this chapter in her life to close. She remembered first being pulled into the well two years ago when she was only 15. Spending time in the feudal era where one had to fight to stay alive she had matured into a woman in both body and mind. Everything had changed in two years. Sango and Miroku decided not to wait for the death of Naraku and got married. Shippo had taken to calling her mother and Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru were on somewhat friendly terms. Yes, the brothers still fought on occasion, but it had become more of a simple sparring match between brothers than rivals. So much had changed and she didn’t want to leave any of it behind.
“Kagome now!” the voice of her hanyou companion shouted.
Kagome snapped form her thoughts and jumped out of the crater she had been in. Taking her bow and arrow she aimed at Naraku and shot her arrow. While she let that one fly she immediately got another ready. The first arrow whizzed past the wicked hanyou, purifying the air around him. She quickly aimed the second arrow “It’s over Naraku!” and let her arrow fly. Turning her head she watched as Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru released Tetsusaiga’s and Tokijin’s most powerful attacks. She watched the over powering attack fly towards Naraku and saw the surprised face he showed as the attack broke his barrier and slowly destroyed him into nothing.
“Kagome great job”
Kagome turned her head to see Inuyasha running up to her. She smiled big and laughed a little when the hanyou wrapped her up in a hug and spun her around “we did it!” she exclaimed as she hugged him back “Naraku is really gone!”
“And so is Kagura” said Kouga as he came walking up with Hakkaku and Ginta behind him.
Kirara landed with Miroku and Sango. The monk immediately hopped off and was grinning like a mad man. Slowly he removed his prayer beads and everyone beamed at the sight of his hand and no wind tunnel. Kagome was quick to display her congratulations by giving him a hug which quickly turned into a smack on his cheek when he felt the need to grab her ass. Everyone was cheering, smiling and laughing; happy that the whole thing was over. After a few minutes Kagome noticed that Sango was not around, looking around, she noticed the slayer standing off to the side. Quickly she left the celebrating group to check on her friend.
When she was closer to Sango, she could hear her sniffling. Coming to stand beside the slayer, she saw what she was staring at. There on the ground was Kohaku’s lifeless body, face down in the ground. Next to the boy was the jewel shard he once had in his back. Kagome frowned and placed a hand on Sango’s shoulder “oh Sango” she said as she felt her own tears starting to come. Pulling the slayer closer to her, both sought comfort in each others arms. After a moment they set to work digging the boy a grave outside the battle area while Kagome worked on fusing the jewel shards together again.
Rin had managed to delay the taiyoukai and the toad saying she wanted to properly say good-bye to Kohaku. Even though he had tried to kill her, she knew it was not his fault. He had been under the spell of Naraku. It did not matter to her though for she still remembered the time he was so kind to her and even talked with her when she was nervous. Quietly a tear escaped her eye. She was going to miss her friend.
After a few moments while staring at the boy’s grave, Kagome asked, “what do we do now?”
Sango turned and looked at her “make a wish on the jewel I suppose”
“Yes” she agreed “but what kind of wish do we make? One that cannot be corrupted”
Everyone was silent a moment. Finally Miroku spoke “perhaps Kaede would know”
It was settled; they would go to Kaede and ask for help. Kagome watched as Rin said her good-byes to everyone and started to follow the taiyoukai that was leaving. Quickly she called out to them “wait!” she got a little nervous when she saw the youkai lord stop, turning to look at her “I have something that I would like to give Rin before I leave, it’s back at Kaede’s, would you come with us so I may give it to her?”
Rin immediately smiled and turned to the taiyoukai “please, Sesshoumaru-sama, may we go? I would like to see what Kagome-chan has for me, please?”
Sesshoumaru stared for a moment before nodding his head “very well then”
It took a full day to get back to Kaede’s hut. The trip itself was nice. Rin and Shippo happily chatted on Ah Un’s back while the others spoke about the battle and the great defeat. There they relived the tale to old miko who in return was very proud of them all. While they told the story, Kagome went through her backpack until she came across the item she had been looking for. Quickly, so not to hold the taiyoukai any longer than necessary she ran just outside the village where he was waiting with Rin and Jaken. She smiled at the sight of the little girl.
“Rin, I want you to have this” she said as she reached out her hand.
Rin gasped at the beautiful gold heart shaped necklace that lay in the older girl’s hand “it’s pretty!” quickly she looked up “are you sure you want me to have this?”
Kagome smiled and bent down to the girl “yes, you remind me a lot of myself when I was your age and I’d like you to have this, here look at this” and opened up the heart shape to reveal a picture of Rin and Sesshoumaru when they had been out a field one day and the little girl had been picking flowers. The youkai lord was actually relaxing by a tree and watching Rin, Jaken was also in the field close to the child.
Rin’s eyes widened “wow, the painting looks so real! I remember that day!”
Kagome gave a small laugh “that’s the wonders of my world, it’s called a photo”
Jaken came over and took a closer look “that is fascinating!”
“Kagome!” a small voice called out to her. All turned to see Shippo running up to her with the others not far behind “time to make a wish on the jewel”
Kagome gave a nod and took the jewel from the kitsune. Holding it closely she made her wish ‘I wish every innocent human or demon that was killed because of the shikon no tama and Naraku was brought back to life’. The jewel shone brightly that everyone had to shield their eyes. When the light was gone so was the jewel. Everyone was silent a moment before asking the girl of the future what she wished for. She smiled “I wished innocent people that were killed because of the jewel and Naraku; were brought back”
Sango gasped “but Kagome that means…that means Kohaku will come back” tears quickly came and she tried not to let them fall before wrapping the girl in a hug “thank you! Thank you Kagome!”
Kagome smiled “it seemed like the best unselfish wish to wish for”
Inuyasha, who’d been quiet since the jewel was put together, watched everyone. The jewel was complete, the journey done, now what was going to happen? While he at first had sought the jewel for himself, since meeting Kagome and the others, that changed. He now had friends, but with this journey over, would everyone now go their separate ways? If they did, he’d be left alone again. He frowned “what happens now?”
Everyone suddenly turned quiet as they went into their own thought of that question. They hadn’t thought of that. For some reason they felt they would always be together. Kagome knew what would happen with her “I will have to go back to my own time”
Rin looked at Kagome strangely, she had mention that before “what do you mean?”
Kagome gently sat on the grass “I am from the future Rin; I was brought here because I am Kikyo’s reincarnation. She was the keeper of the jewel when she died she burned the jewel with her body. I was born with the jewel in me and on my 15th birthday I was pulled through the well to this time”
“But can’t you still keep coming here?” she asked.
Kagome gave a small smile “I don’t think so. I used to be able to get back and forth because I always had a piece of the shikon with me, but now that it’s gone, I have a feeling I’ll only be allowed to go back home one last time with no more return trips”
Inuyasha growled “then you just won’t go back”
She looked at him “I can’t stay here Inuyasha, and you know that” she watched him fold his arms and glare at her “I can’t live the rest of my life here, my mother, my brother, my grandpa, and my friends would all wonder what happened to me. I have to go back, I wasn’t meant to stay, and I understand that”
Shippo quickly leapt up into her arms and held her tightly. Not again, first his parents died and left him alone, now their group which had become family was going to be broken up “but what’s going to happen then?”
Kagome frowned “oh Shippo, I don’t know, but everything will turn out fine, I’m sure of it”
Rin frowned, she felt sad for Shippo. He had been in a good group and it seemed like he was going to have no where to go. He seemed very close to Kagome, but now Kagome had to leave. What was going to happen to him?
“Come Rin, we’re leaving” Sesshoumaru said as he turned to leave.
Quickly Rin said her good-byes and followed the taiyoukai into the forest. Once more looking back to see Shippo gasping on to Kagome tightly and she swore she could see a tear ready to fall from his eyes.
Inuyasha’s ears suddenly perked up and he turned his head. Everyone followed his stare and watched as Kikyo emerged from the tree line. She quietly walked up to them, feeling a little shy. She no longer felt the rage and hate that she had felt, she felt alive again. Stopping just before the group she turned and looked at the girl from the future “you didn’t have to do that”
Kagome stood, holding Shippo close since he seemed to have a death grip on her “you didn’t deserve to die nor did anyone else that had accidentally came in contact with the jewel”
“But I was given the jewel to protect, I did not accidentally come in contact with it” she stated, confused.
Kagome smiled “true, but you were tricked by Naraku and killed because of it. It’s only fair you get a second chance” walking up to the girl, she spoke quietly so others wouldn’t hear “besides I can’t stay here, I know that, and someone needs to look after Inuyasha. Who better than a girl that loved him first and should have been with him from the start”
Kikyo gave a soft smile before looking over to the hanyou who had a surprised look on his face. He heard, she knew he did, looking at the girl, she knew he heard too. She then turned and walked over to the hanyou and took her hand in his “will you stay in the village…with me?”
Still shocked, he just nodded. Sango and Miroku decided then to stay in the village as well. Miroku would be the future priest of the village when Kaede passed, which meant Kikyo could actually be a normal woman without having to worry about duties. Sango figured that she could stay and help the villagers learn to fight and fend of demons. Everyone was quickly thinking of ways to move on now that the jewel hunting was over.
“What’s going to happen to me?”
Every person stopped their planning to look at the kitsune still latched on to the girl of the future. They had almost forgotten about poor Shippo. Kagome held on to him tighter “I won’t leave until you’re taken care of” she said with resolve.
Shippo quickly looked at her “then stay and you take care of me”
Tears reached the corner of her eyes “I can’t Shippo, no matter how much I would love to, I can’t. I have to go home. My family will be worried if I don’t go back eventually”
“But I don’t want you to go” he whined.
Inuyasha could see how hard this was on Kagome, and Shippo was only making it harder for her to leave. He understood that if she didn’t return home, her family would forever worry and wonder what happened to her. She had to go home, it was where she belonged. He took a step forward “Shippo” he called getting the kitsune’s attention “you can stay with me and Kikyo if you want”
Shocked at getting the invite, Shippo shook his head “no, I want to stay with Kagome”
“But I can’t stay here Shippo” she stressed. He really wasn’t making his easy for her. She could already feel the tears escaping down the sides of he cheeks “perhaps you can stay with Miroku and Sango” she looked at him expectantly and they nodded their heads.
“She’s right Shippo, you’re more than welcome to stay with us” Sango offered.
Shippo release a growl and glared at the people standing near him, trying to take him away from Kagome “NO! I WANT TO STAY WITH KAGOME!” he yelled at the top of his lungs.
A little ways a way, a small group stopped and turned to stare towards where the cry was made. Rin felt tears come as she thought of what Shippo must be going through. He was an orphan just like her, but she had Sesshoumaru who wasn’t going to leave her. But Kagome was going to leave Shippo and not by choice. She could imagine the little kitsune youkai was probably feeling like he was going to be alone again.
“Rin, why are you crying?” a deep voice asked.
Turning her head, she looked at her lord, tears rolling down her cheek “because I’m thinking of what Shippo must be going through. He’s an orphan like me. He found someone to take care of him like me. I know Sesshoumaru isn’t going to leave me, but Kagome has to leave Shippo, not because she wants to it’s cause she has to. He’s going to be alone again”
Jaken looked at the crying child “well what do you expect Sesshoumaru-sama to do about it?”
Rin glanced at the taiyoukai before her before staring at the ground, trying to wipe the tears from her eyes “please, Sesshoumaru-sama, may we take Shippo with us?”
Sesshoumaru watched her for a moment as she cried before turning and walking back towards the village “we will offer him the choice to join, it will be up to him if he does or not” he glanced at her “understand?” he watched as she nodded and proceeded to follow her lord back to the village. Upon entering the clearing before the village, the small group could still see them trying to reason with the hysterical kitsune. He was so determined to make the girl from the future stay; he’d even taken to growling at anyone who tried to remove him from her. The taiyoukai noticed his half brother comforting a wound on his hand, it appear to look like a bite mark, most likely from the kitsune.
Kagome was at a loss of what to do. Shippo was not making this easy on her. She’d love nothing more than to stay and continue to care for him, but it wasn’t possible. She had to go home to her own time, which was the way it was meant to be. She held him tight and spoke quietly “Shippo, please try to understand. I would love for things to continue on has we had this time without Naraku in the way. I would love to continue to take care of you, but I must return home. If I don’t go back my whole family would worry about me, wondering if I’m alive or dead. I can’t do that to them, it’s not fair to them”
Shippo clutched her shirt tighter “but I don’t want you to go, you won’t come back!”
“And I hate that fact as much as you do, believe me” she could feel herself beginning to lose control as her tears started to fall “but people traveling through wells is not an everyday occurrence in my time. I’m grateful I had the privilege to even come and meet everyone here, but I cannot continue to do so. I have to return to the future it’s where I belong”
“NO!” he cried “you belong here with me!”
“Shippo!” she cried out in frustration “I can’t stay no matter how bad I want to, I belong in the future”
Rin quietly stepped forward, none had noticed their presence yet “Shippo, can’t you see how sad Kagome-chan is? She doesn’t want to leave anymore than you want her to”
Shippo turned and looked at Rin “that’s why she should stay here”
Placing her hands behind her back she walked up to the two on the ground “but who knows what Kagome’s staying here will do to the future” she reasoned “if Kagome-chan were to stay here maybe something that was suppose to happen when she goes home won’t happen, maybe it would be something very important that she was needed to be there”
Shippo sniffled as he thought. She was right, no matter how much he wanted to deny everything, and she was right. As much as he didn’t want it, Kagome’s home was in the future. If she hadn’t had the shikon no tama she wouldn’t have been sent to the past. She would still be in her time going on never knowing anything about their group. If it hadn’t been for her the group wouldn’t even exist. Taking a few minutes to calm down and seek the comfort that Kagome was giving so freely, he tried to bring himself to let her go. He couldn’t stay with Sango and Miroku, they were going to start a family soon, and there would be no place for him eventually. Inuyasha was most likely also going to want to be with Kikyo now that she was back from the dead. Even though the hanyou invited him to live with him, it wouldn’t work. Inuyasha would want to spend all his time with Kikyo and possibly even start a family. There was no place for him there. He sniffled again and held Kagome close “if you go home Kagome, where do I go?”
Kagome cried a little and held him tighter. Suddenly Rin placed her hand on Shippo’s shoulder “you can come with Sesshoumaru-sama and me and Jaken!”
The whole group gasped and turned to look at Rin before looking at the quiet taiyoukai. Kagome was quite shocked. She took a moment to think on it before standing up with the kitsune in her arms “Shippo, stay with the others a moment, I want to speak with Sesshoumaru-sama.” She was happy when the kitsune did as she asked and walked up to the youkai lord who had kept his distance from the group. She watched him a moment, waiting to see if he’d say anything to confirm Rin’s outburst. As usual he stayed quiet “you’re not denying Rin’s statement” she stated.
“Rin feels she knows what the kitsune is going through since she too is an orphan” he spoke softly so the others wouldn’t hear them.
Kagome nodded in agreement “she’s right, she’d understand better than anyone else here” she paused a moment, trying to get the courage to ask, hoping he would answer “is…is that why you came back here?”
Sesshoumaru moved his head to show he was looking at her “Rin made a simple request and it sounded like you could not handle the situation”
“You’re right as usual” she gave a soft chuckle as she wiped a few remaining tears from her eyes “I was having a very difficult time” she then gave him a serious look “but are you okay with taking care of another child?”
“Rin needs a companion besides Jaken, someone her own age to be around when I am doing patrols of my land and must leave them behind” he answered, seeing her doubtful look at that thought of Shippo being left behind for anything, he reasoned “I do not always have Rin with me, I sometimes leave her behind so she can actually relax and enjoy some time to herself, like every child does every now and then. As much as she may admire me, she too would want time to herself without me around”
Kagome gave a nod “that’s understandable. I can accept that” she let out a frustrated sigh and began pacing “I don’t know! It sounds like a good idea, but, urg! I don’t know”
Sesshoumaru watched with some amusement “think of it this way. The monk and slayer cannot raise a youkai for they do not fully understand the dealings of raising a youkai child. The monk was raised to exterminate us, even if he doesn’t always. He wouldn’t know half the things that kitsune is going to go through growing up. The slayer was raised to also exterminate youkai. She too wouldn’t understand the first thing in raising a youkai child”
Kagome paused her pacing for a moment and stared at him “good point and I accept that. I was already sure raising a youkai child while somewhat similar to raising a human child might also differ from raising a human child”
The taiyoukai finally understood what she was doing. She wanted him to give her reasons why he was suitable to raising the kitsune and not her friends. As bothersome as this was he understood. She cared for the kitsune as if he were her own child. She couldn’t hand him over to just anyone especially a youkai like him who had tried to kill her in the past and was also known for being rather heartless. Giving a nod, he continued “Inuyasha is unsuitable as well. He is brash and does not think things through fully. I’m sure now that his woman has been brought back from the dead he is going to want to make up for lost time with her and will not feel fully up to taking the time to raise a child”
She nodded and gave a smile “you’re right again. I knew this, but to hear someone else say what I’ve been thinking, makes me feel better. So, Sesshoumaru-sama, besides Shippo making a wonderful companion for Rin, how will I know he’s being looked after? How will I know that you are taking care of him while taking care of Rin? Not just leave him to fend for himself?”
He growled a little at that “Do you think that I would stoop so low? You dare insult me!”
“When it comes to Shippo I don’t care who you are just what you will do for him” she replied firmly.
He growled again, but gave a nod “He is a demon and as such he should learn the demon ways. I will teach him all he needs to know”
Kagome stared at him for a moment and smiled “you’ll teach him how to defend himself should someone attack him? You’ll teach him how to fight should he have no other way out?” she took a step toward the tall demon lord “you’ll teach him to the skills he’ll need to survive should he decide to go out on his own?”
“You have my word he’ll learn what he needs to know to survive in this world” he vowed.
She nodded “alright then, if you really don’t mind, he can go with you”
“Only if it is what he wishes, no good will come from forcing him to do something he doesn’t want” he answered.
Kagome let out a small laugh “just make sure he doesn’t get away with everything Sesshoumaru-sama, he may become spoiled”
With a nod both walked back to the group that was waiting for them to finish their talk. Immediately Shippo ran and hopped into Kagome’s arms “what were you talking about?”
Kagome looked him straight in the eye “We talked about you living with him and I think it would be a good idea”
Inuyasha gave a surprised gasp before moving closer to Kagome and glaring at Sesshoumaru “do you think that is a wise decision? This is Sesshoumaru we’re talking about!”
She sighed and looked at him “and here I was thinking you two were getting along okay after two years of trying to kill each other” she then turned her head and smiled at the kitsune in her arms “but yes, I think it is a good choice. Sesshoumaru and I have talked and I think it is best for Shippo to go with him. He’ll have Rin to play with and keep him company and Sesshoumaru has offered to teach him everything he’ll need to know as he gets older”
Rin gave a big smile and ran up to Kagome “so Shippo is going to come with us?”
Kagome gave a nod “only if Shippo is okay with it”
Right away Shippo was ready to say ‘no,’ but taking a moment to think it through he paused. He watched Kagome’s face for a moment, seeing the honesty of her words and maybe just a little hope he’d agree before turning to look at Rin who held the same hope in her eyes. He frowned; Rin was an orphan just like him, but she was always cheerful and smiling and completely devoted to Sesshoumaru. Raising his eyes he met those of the taiyoukai before deciding. He had to pick someone to stay with since Kagome couldn’t stay no matter how much she wanted to. Letting out a sad sigh he looked back at the girl from the future “okay, I’ll go with Sesshoumaru” he quickly looked at the youkai and spoke in a quick panic tone “but I want to see Kagome to the well first, I want to say good-bye to her there so I know she gets home safely!”
Rin gasped before spinning around to face the taiyoukai “me too! Me too, I want to say good-bye to Kagome-chan too”
Sesshoumaru turned his back to them and started walking towards the well “very well”
Kagome went to the hut to gather her things before all left for the well. Kaede said her good-byes first, then Kikyo who again said her thanks for bringing her back. Miroku gave her a strong hug and she smiled as she hugged him back, but then felt a hand on her butt.
“Miroku!” she yelled jumping back from him and using her hands to cover her butt.
He just gave a silly grin with a chuckle and raised his now wind tunnel free hand “I couldn’t resist, I thought I would give you something to remember me by”
Kagome glared at him for a moment before it softened into a smile “you’re lucky I’m leaving Miroku or I would have hit you good”
Kaede gave a small smile “do not worry child, I’m sure Sango will take care of him when you’re gone”
Sango glared at her husband “you are right about that Kaede” she then looked at Kagome and quickly gave her a hug “I’m going to miss you so much Kagome. You have been such a great friend to me, my best friend, so close I could call you sister”
Kagome felt her eyes water again. Damn this was getting to emotional for her “oh Sango, I’m going to miss you too” she pulled back to look at the slayer, seeing her eyes with unshed tears as well “you are my best friend and that will never change”
Turning her head she smiled as she said good-bye to Rin “you make sure you’re good for Sesshoumaru-sama” at her nod, she turned to Shippo “and you be good for Sesshoumaru as well, make sure you listen to him. He’s being extremely generous in offering to take you in, don’t cause trouble for him and make him feel like changing his mind”
“I won’t Kagome” cried Shippo as he quickly latched on to her once more and quietly whispered in her ear “ever since that day when the thunder brothers were defeated, I have always thought of you as a mother” he felt her hold him tighter and gave a sad smile “I am going to miss you”
Kagome gave a nod against him “I’m going to miss you too” then she whispered in his ear “you will always be my son no matter where I am” she felt him hold on to her before finally releasing her. She then looked at him and tried to lighten the situation “a shame we didn’t confess our feelings sooner huh?”
Shippo couldn’t help, but smirk even with tears in his eyes “yea, but it probably would have made saying good-bye harder than it is right now”
She gave a short nod “Most likely” finally she turned to the hanyou in red. She could see he was waiting for his turn and opened her arms for him. At first it didn’t look like he was going to do anything, but suddenly he lunged into her arms and held her close. Breathing in deep her scent and taking comfort as he felt her arms wrap tightly around his neck “I am going to miss you so much, Inuyasha”
“I’m going to miss you too Kagome” he said quietly “you know, I did care for you, greatly” he buried his face in her neck “I do love you and always will even though we couldn’t be together”
Kagome nodded against him “I know, but I suppose it was best that nothing happened or saying good-bye would be more painful then it is now” she pushed herself closer to him and whispered “I loved you too, Inuyasha”
“I know” he whispered “if only things had been different”
“Everything happens for a reason” she answered “and now you can try to have a good life with Kikyo now”
He held her tighter “I am grateful to you for that as well, there’s so much that I have to thank you for that it would take forever to say it all”
“You don’t have to Inuyasha, I know” she gave a small sad laugh “you have taught me so much about myself, about love, and about life” she pulled away a little to look at him “I have a lot to thank you for as well. You will always be my first crush and my first love” she gave a tiny smirk “even if we didn’t get past the rare holding hands or hugging”
He stared down at her a moment with a small smile “that’s all we did huh?” when she nodded, he gave a small chuckle “as a first crush and first love interest, I should hold more of an impression, shouldn’t I? After all, when you tell this story to your friends about your first love and all you have to show for it is simple rare hugs and the occasional hand holding” he watched as she pulled away and gave him a confused look.
“Inuyasha what are you tal-“her words muffled as the hanyou placed his lips over hers as he pulled her close to him again. A second of shock and she kissed him back wrapping her arms around his neck once more. He moved his lips over hers in a seductive fashion and gently made her mouth open before his tongue dove in to taste every inch of her. For a minute it seemed they were the only two there. He was holding her tightly to him and kissing her with all he passion he could give in that one kiss.
Suddenly, Kagome felt herself being pushed and then she felt weightless. Almost like flying. Opening her eyes she saw she was looking up and everyone was growing further and further away before the blue light came to cover her. Touching the ground and looking above at a now closed off top, she quickly jumped up on her feet, panicked “no” she whispered and climbed up half way before letting go and falling back in. Hitting the ground she started to shake “no” she repeated and looked up only to see the same top that blocked out the sky. Tears escaped her eyes “no, no” she cried into her hands. She gasped when the blue light returned only to vanish just as quickly, immediately she turned and looked up. Seeing the ceiling again she turned to look behind her before she cried out a grieved “NO!”
She let herself grieve, clutching the large yellow bag that had followed her, remembering everything and everyone as the realization that the journey was really over. There was no going back. It was at least two hours before she stopped crying, having run out of tears, and another hour before she finally found the strength to get her self out of the well and into the house. Entering the house she saw her brother playing video games, pausing a moment to welcome her back; her grandfather was reading a paper in the kitchen when she walked in, her mother cooking supper.
Hearing her daughter enter, Aksumi, turned around with a smile “welcome back Kagome, I’m just mak-“ she was quickly cut off when a strong force of a body ran into her, holding her tightly. Looking down she saw the top of her daughter’s head and could feel her shirt getting wet. Placing her cooking spoon down, she then focused on comforting her child. To do this she wrapped her arms in a calming and soothing embrace “what is wrong?”
“It’s over,” was the quiet and muffled response.
Having a good idea it was about her traveling to the past, she tried to prod further “What is over?”
Kagome took in a shaky breath, trying to speak clearly through her sobs, but again she cried “it’s all over,” she tried to explain again “there’s no more going…back”
Aksumi placed her head on top of her daughter’s and better wrapped her arms around her, as if to shield her from the outside world “the journey is over and the well no longer works, is that what you’re trying to say?” at the hurt cry and small nod of the head against her chest, she felt her self well up with unshed tears “my poor baby, I guess you are hurting very much at losing all your friends from that time” again another nod against her chest “it will be alright, everything will be fine” she backed up at took a good look at her eldest child and wiped some of the tears from her eyes “go get cleaned up, you can join us for supper if you feel up to it, but I’ll understand if you don’t. I’m not going to rush you back into a normal schedule after such a big loss”
Again Kagome nodded before leaving her mother’s embrace and slowly trekking up the stairs to her room. Walking in, she took a look around and glanced at her window. There would be no more Inuyasha sneaking into her room or coming to she what was taking her so long through the window. Setting the backpack on the bed she briefly stared at the pink sheets. There would be no more Inuyasha falling asleep on her bed. Having a shower and getting changed, she then went downstairs and opened the screen door for the kitchen. Staring at a spot where normally an impatient hanyou sat, she started to cry again. There would be no more Inuyasha tormenting the cat while nagging her to get ready so they could return to the feudal era. Sinking to her knees she just continued to sob. Feeling arms around her she leaned into the embrace and let her self take comfort in her mother’s arms once more.

Inuyasha watched as she fell further and further into the well. The blue light came and when it was gone, so was she. Turning and bending down he picked up the yellow backpack before tossing it into the well.
Shippo wailed his fury as he jumped on the hanyou’s back and preceded to pound his head and give the odd yank on his hair “Inuyasha, how could you do that?! How could you just push her in like that?! I hate you! Why did you push her in like that?”
Head lowered so no one could see his eyes he quietly and soberly answered “it was best this way”
Shippo paused in his attack before sitting on the hanyou’s shoulder to stare into the well with unshed tears “how…how is it for the best?”
“The quicker she got home the quicker she can go back to the way things were for her before she even fell into this time” he answered. His voice sounded like he was miles away instead of right there with them “she’ll be hurt and she’ll cry for us for awhile, but it’s best she gets over it and continues on with her life”
Miroku walked over to the hanyou hunched over the well, still peering down into its depths. Placing a hand on his friend’s shoulder, trying to offer his sympathy and support “we’re all going to miss her just as I’m sure she is going to miss us” looking down into the well, he continued “the important thing is, that we never forget her”
Finally Inuyasha lifted his head up and looked towards the sky, his eyes filled with tears that wanted to be spilt. Closing his eyes he let them fall without shame. He was mourning just like everyone else. He released a sigh “none of us can forget her, she’s not easy to forget”
It was then that Shippo could tell that Inuyasha was suffering just as much as he was. He didn’t want to let Kagome go either, even though he had Kikyo, but it had to be done. Taking a careful look at Sango, Miroku, Kirara, Kaede and Rin, he realized none of them wanted Kagome to go. None wanted to say good-bye to the girl from the future, but they knew it had to be done. Now they could all start trying to move on with their lives while trying to keep the memory of Kagome alive.
Sesshoumaru had seen enough and had remained quiet throughout the whole sentimental good-byes. It was time to leave “Rin, Shippo, we leave”
Straight away Rin came to his side, a few tears still on her face. He waited a minute as Shippo quietly said good-byes to the others of his old hunting party before slowly walking to come beside Rin. Seeing everyone ready to go he started walking into the forest with his little group following. Rin and Shippo sat atop Ah Un when they finally met up with the dragon. The kitsune the whole time remained quiet and to himself, not wanting to talk as he kept staring back in the direction of the well and village. Knowing what was going through his mind, the taiyoukai spoke “you shall see them from time to time in the future”
Turning to look at the youkai that was to be raising him now he gave a nod before looking back in the direction where he knew the village to be in “thank you, Sesshoumaru-sama”
The taiyoukai nodded “I’m sure that just because you are traveling with me your mother wouldn’t want you to forget your friends or ignore them”
Shippo turned to look at him with surprise before giving a small smile then he took out a small photo Kagome had made Miroku take a month before the final battle. It was a picture of her holding him close in front of the god tree, both smiling into what she had called a camera “yes, I’m sure my mother wouldn’t like that”
