The Beginning of the End
by SkyFire
One day everything was the same as it always was; he was Sesshoumaru, daiyoukai of the Western Lands, one of the four cardinal lords, and one of the most dangerous and feared youkai in all of Japan. His lands were fruitful, his people obedient, and his enemies dead. He ruled with iron strength, yet none of his villages ever starved in the winter thanks to his efforts. He wasn't beloved by his people but he was respected and feared and that was good enough.
One day, everything was the same, though there was a troubling lack of reports coming in from his spies in other lands and it irritated him that he didn't know why. He sent out more spies in case the original ones had simply been found out and killed, with the same lack of response. It irritated him - were the other Lords planning something? But they had parted on good enough terms, or at least agreed not to war with each other, at the last grand council only a season before; what could possibly have changed in that little time? He certainly hadn't changed anything about his rule.
One day, everything was the same as it had been in the countless years since his great and terrible father had died and the West came into his hands.
The next, he was rudely awakened in his own bedchamber as the doors were kicked in, armed and armored humans pouring into the gap to surround him, his castle already overrun, his guards and servants slain or taken, and the humans themselves somehow invisible to his senses; if he hadn't been staring straight at them, there was no way he could have known they were there at all.
Quicker than thought the sheets were thrown aside and he was up, rage painting his eyes red, long, lean body in a battle-ready half-crouch, claws already glowing faintly green with poison. Barely a thought was spent lamenting his lack of swords and armor - or clothing other than his sleepwear - then he brushed it aside as insignificant. If these lowly humans thought that they could take him down because of that small lack, they were in for a surprise. Sesshoumaru was more than strong and deadly enough to go through them all stark naked if he had to!
Indeed, at first it seemed like that would be the case; he barely had to move and the humans that had so rudely awakened him were falling in pieces, their fountaining blood painting his bedchamber in hot crimson. But that was not all of them and their comrades hadn't even finished hitting the floor before the room was filled again. And again. And again.
Then it hit him; a coward's blow from behind from a man he couldn't sense leaving him with an oddly-powerful sutra pinned to his back, sending burning jolts of hot agony spearing through him, jagged whips of cold shooting down his limbs as almost-delicate lines of blue-white purification energy danced over his skin. It hurt, more than any sutra ever had before, and he could feel the skin and flesh beneath the cursed thing burning beneath its power but he was Sesshoumaru, damn it, and he would not be defeated by humans, no matter what vile scrolls they brought!
He pushed the pain aside with an effort, and if that batch of intruders met an even gorier demise than their predecessors who could blame him?
But, like the miserable humans themselves, there wasn't only one sutra, nor was there only one coward willing to sneak up behind him - curse whatever power they were using that hid them from senses he was used to relying on! - and pin them on him. Curse, too, those responsible for creating the beads that flew at him, wrapping around his body and limbs before growing in both size and power, weighing him down even as they only added to the purification power that blazed over him.
It took a long time - noon was passing, the corpses piled knee-high or higher everywhere - but the humans, the unending swarm of damned cowardly sutra-wielding things, somehow managed the impossible.
Struggling under the power of those encumbering beads and over a dozen uncommonly-powerful sutras, Sesshoumaru didn't even realize that he was falling until he hit the floor with a soggy thud in a pool of human blood.
Almost immediately, even as the realization sank in and he braced his hand on the floor to push himself back up, they were on him. More sutras were plastered over him; on his back, his arm, his legs. More than even he could fight, and he was forced to realize something that had not happened since his great and terrible father's demise.
He had lost.
Even more irritating than that fact, though - and that was saying something, the fact that he had lost to humans grating on his nerves like the purification power they had used - was the fact that he didn't know why. Why had they done this? Why had they come into his lands - lands that his family had ruled over for millennia, lands that prospered, not suffered, under their rulership - and done this? It didn't make sense. Why-?
Lying there, immobilized on the floor in a pool of human blood that was slowly sinking into the already-saturated tatami, he more than half-expected them to finish the job. While he was anything but resigned to his death - he would keep fighting up until the last moment! - he had to admit it would be comforting to be with his father again; it had been so long since he'd been part of a proper pack....
Someone grabbed a handful of his long hair - his hair! There was a human that was not Rin touching his hair! - and pulled his head back sharply. He growled, unable to suppress the angry sound as his throat was forcefully bared, and expected at any moment to feel the sting of a knife slitting his throat. Such an undignified death, disgraceful!
A human approached him then, knelt in front of him. He snarled, struggled again against the hands and powers that kept him down, failed. His head kept back at a painful angle, he couldn't see anything of the man below his elbows, and snapped at him when he saw him reach out, only to have his head pulled back further, his neck screaming in pain, some of his hair getting pulled out by the roots in punishment.
Then there was pressure, all around his neck. A wide band of something closing around it and pulling tight. Almost immediately, he could feel its effects, feel it sucking the energy out of him, his youki draining with alarming speed under its influence. He felt himself weakening, his power pouring from him like blood from a wound, until he was reduced to relying on the hand in his hair to keep his face up and out of the pool of blood, unable to hold it up himself under the combined power of sutras, beads, and the thing around his neck. The red left his eyes, his body unable to maintain even that little of a transformation and unaccustomed exhaustion made his body go limp in his captors' hold.
He knew now, with that last act, that that was what they were; captors. They had no plans to kill him - at least not just then. So then what did they want?
"So this is the fearful demon that has been terrorizing these lands for generations," the one that had collared him said with an audible sneer. "Not much to look at now, is he? And so the last so-called cardinal daiyoukai falls to our power. My friends, it is now time for humans to rule as we should have, as we would have if it weren't for these demons. Humans should rule humans. There is no being greater than a human, and we should rule everything!" There was a chorus of angry agreement from around the room. The speaker reached out, grabbed Sesshoumaru by the bangs and dared to look the daiyoukai in the eye. "Hear that, demon? It is time for humans to regain their rightful place as rulers, and for demons to be the ones to fear. The time of demon rule is over!"
"Humans are weak and cowardly creatures," Sesshoumaru countered, golden eyes narrowed, acid dripping from every word, "who can only steal power from others, not attain in on their own. You know this to be true or you would have challenged this Sesshoumaru in open contest."
The man's face grew almost purple with anger before he did something that no one ever had and backhanded the daiyoukai once across the face. Twice. Three times. He grinned at the sight though his enjoyment was soured as, even with the draining of the collar, sutras, and beads, the bruises vanished almost instantly. The grin returned, however, as he heard the angry muttering from all around him. "Weak, hmm?" he said mockingly, even as he stood. "We'll see who is weak." He looked around the room, seeing all eyes on the fallen daiyoukai, their anger a near-palpable thing in the room. "Won't we, my friends? Let's show the demon who is weak, and who is strong!"
Then the humans surged forwards, and Sesshoumaru disappeared beneath their flailing fists and kicks.
