Chapter One
I would stop running, if I knew there was chance. It tears me apart to sacrifice it all, but I’m forced to let go.
Frozen, Within Temptation
Everything hurt so much, but she didn’t have the strength to scream. She could feel her mind slipping as she fought against the insanity that had once consumed her. If she surrendered, she knew that she’d do something that she’d ultimately regret.
But why keep fighting against her own insanity? If she surrendered, then she’d have peace. If she didn’t, then she’d be forced to remember their betrayal until the day she died.
She was screwed and she knew it.
Then again, she concluded, she was going to die anyway so what difference did it make? She’d only have a few minutes of insanity, an hour tops, so what would it matter? Of course, if she kept fighting against her own insanity then she’d only remember for a few minutes to an hour anyway so it wouldn’t matter.
Tears gathered in the miko’s eyes as she began choking back her sobs, familiar voices whispering hatefully loving words in her mind. “Natsumi…” Kagome sobbed, almost surprising herself. Yep, she was screwed if she was sobbing for her insane sister.
With a relinquished sob, the young miko allowed herself to slip into the storm that raged against the calm within her mind.
“Why? Don’t you like me anymore?”
The four adults froze, seeing a child version of the miko standing in front of them, the child’s skin glowing softly in the moonlight. Bruises adorned her face and her white dress was torn as well as bloodstained, blood dribbling down one of her legs from the space hidden between her legs. “Be gone!” Sesshomaru ordered, flipping his poison whip at the ghostly child.
The ghostly child vanished, reappearing a couple of feet in front of them. “I was good. I didn’t do anything before and Naraku was gonna kill everybody.” Tears gathered in the child miko’s eyes. “I had to stop him.”
“You’re not Kagome!” Inuyasha shouted, lashing out at the ghost child.
“I was good!” The child miko began crying, her wails filling the night as she vanished before reappearing again. “I’m sorry if I did anything bad!”
Tears gathered in Sango’s eyes as she watched the ghostly child sob. “Rest in peace, Kagome-chan. You don’t have to be afraid for-”
“I wasn’t afraid! You hurt me because you’re scared of my big brother and sister! I should have run away like they told me to and let you all suffer! I should have! I should have!”
A cold wind picked up and blew around them. “That doesn’t matter now. I’ll make you all sorry. I won’t die without knowing that you’re hurting.” The miko’s voice echoed in the wind, sending chills down their spines with the amount of hate.
Just as suddenly as the wind picked up, it stopped. They looked at each other before rushing back towards where the miko lay. They needed to stop her before she did something.
What they saw, however, shocked them.
Instead of lying where they had left her, the young miko was missing. Inuyasha felt his muscles tense slightly, picking up the scent of a storm mixed in with the ocean. That scent, he realized, screamed danger and his instincts told him to run as fast as he could. Who in the world did this scent belong to?
Frowning, Sesshomaru turned and began walking back towards the village. “There’s nothing we can do now.” Sesshomaru told them calmly. “The miko is nothing more than a memory.”
Tears gathered in the female demon’s eyes as she listened to the pained screams that left her sister’s lips. There was nothing that they could do, she knew, that would ease the human’s pain. Not only had she been beaten and left for dead, her mind trying desperately to reject what had happened, but she had been brutally raped.
The female stiffened slightly when she felt a pair of muscular arms wrap around her waist, pulling her against a firm chest. “There’s no sense in crying, Hitomi,” a male voice said calmly.
Hitomi rested her head against the male’s chest, softly breathing in his scent. She loved how he smelt like the ocean during a storm, comforting her in times of need. “How could they have hurt her so badly, Haku?” Hitomi questioned, her voice weak. “I understood Sesshomaru’s reasoning with me; his father had just died and he was practically insane with grief. Even his mother was hell bent on making our family suffer. Why now? Why Kagome? What had she done to him or even those fools that she called her friends to make them want to betray her?”
Haku didn’t answer for a moment before answering, “He knows that she could make him suffer, just like you can. They felt that she would kill them once she grew bored with them, or even viewed her as a threat of some kind.”
“But she didn’t!” Hitomi shouted, turning in her brother’s arms. “She didn’t kill them, even when they were attacking her! She didn’t even fight back, she just tried to run away!”
Tears poured down the white-haired woman’s face as she sobbed, clinging to her brother’s bloodstained shirt. “Go sit with her, Hitomi.” Haku said finally. “She needs her big sister more than she needs her big brothers or even her parents.”
Hitomi nodded and weakly pulled away from her brother, glancing back at him. His dark blue hair was a mess, dark shadows standing out against his pale skin. Perhaps the most painful thing to see about him, however, was how his silver eyes showed nothing but pain and anger towards the ones who had harmed their innocent sister.
Entering the bedroom, Hitomi sat down next to her screaming and sobbing sister. Gently, she began stroking the young miko’s dark hair before beginning to sing softly to her.
I can't feel my senses
I just feel the cold
All colors seem to fade away
I can't reach my soul
I would stop running
If I knew there was a chance
It tears me apart to sacrifice it all
but I'm forced to let go
Tell me I'm frozen but what can I do?
Can't tell the reasons I did it for you
When lies turn into truth I sacrificed for you
You say that I'm frozen but what can I do?
You won't forgive me,
(I can feel your sorrow)
but I know you'll be all right
It tears me apart that you will never know
but I have to let go
Tell me I'm frozen but what can I do?
Can't tell the reasons I did it for you
When lies turn into truth I sacrificed for you
You say that I'm frozen but what can I do?
Everything will slip way
Shattered peaces will remain
When memories fade into emptiness
Only time will tell its tale
If it all has been in vain
I can't feel my senses
I just feel the cold
Frozen...
But what can I do?
Frozen...
Tell me I'm frozen but what can I do?
Can't tell the reasons I did it for you
When lies turn into truth I sacrificed for you
You say that I'm frozen, frozen...
As the miko’s sobs softened, the white-haired woman closed her eyes. She knew full well that Kagome had left the group her own farewell present, but that didn’t stop the demoness from wanting to give them a present of her own. Sesshomaru would suffer for stealing what was hers and she would return the favor.
The half breed would need to suffer as well. The taijiya would be punished without a doubt and so would that monk. Of course, Kagome had already punished the two humans, they just weren’t aware of it yet. In five to fifteen years, sure, then they’d begin to notice. After a hundred years, they’d get a glimpse into the insanity that the miko had endured in silence for the past fourteen years.
Smiling softly, her light blue eyes dancing with the insanity that still held her mind, Hitomi kissed the now sleeping miko’s head. “I’ll make them sorry they ever laid eyes upon you, my ugly sister.” Hitomi whispered, her breath lightly dusting the miko’s bruised and beaten face. “I’ll make them all so very, very sorry.”
“She never hurt anybody. Even when she wanted to make everybody around her suffer miserably, she never once hurt anybody.”
The group froze, their hearts pounding as they looked at the white-haired woman that stood before them. She wore a blue dress that hugged her figure and brought out her beautiful blue eyes. “Hitomi.” Sesshomaru growled.
“Why did you bastards hurt my sister?!” Hitomi yelled at them as tears began to roll down her face. “She didn’t do anything to you! She wasn’t hurting anybody!”
Miroku felt his heart pounding as he looked at the woman, tempted to go to her despite his instincts warning him to stay away. “Who are ye?” Kaede demanded. “What do ye want?”
Hitomi hiccupped as she looked at the group with her tears still falling. “They killed my sister.” Hitomi answered with a soft sob. “They killed what light she had left and replaced my angel with someone else. She had a baby brother that looked up to her and an older brother that depended on her to stay sane! How am I supposed to tell them that their Kagome is gone?”
“The miko went off on her own and was attacked by a demon.” Sesshomaru stated calmly. “We have been unable to locate her body.”
“Lies!” Hitomi screamed at him. “A demon attacked her, yes, but so did a filthy half breed and two disgusting humans! I see the ones that killed my Kagome. I still hear my Kagome screaming their names! You attacked her and raped her! You left her for dead instead of leaving her alone so she could come home!”
She stepped away from them, her light blue eyes glistening with unshed tears. “We would have never harmed Kagome!” Inuyasha yelled at the woman.
Hitomi shook her head, the insanity that held her mind reflecting in her eyes. “The Kagome that died fourteen long years ago would never have been harmed by you.” Hitomi said as she tangled her fingers in her hair. “Now my Kagome is gone. You four monsters killed her and now you’ll suffer for taking away our light. Your nights will be filled with her screams. Your days will be filled with hearing her laughter in the wind. Time will no longer have any meaning for your little girl, Sesshomaru. When she reaches the peak of her beauty, she will be trapped in time just as my Kagome is.”
Turning, the woman began walking away from them, talking to herself. “You know her, Sesshomaru?” Inuyasha questioned.
“Yes. She’s clearly insane now, but that doesn’t meant that her words are to be taken lightly. Anybody that angers her usually ends up suffering in whatever way she imagines. Time has no meaning for neither her or her brother.” Sesshomaru answered calmly, his golden eyes focusing on the direction where the woman had gone. “Killing her will only invoke her brother’s wrath and he is not one to be messed with.”
Oh, merciful Gods above, what had they done? Miroku felt his heart sinking as the knowledge that they had made a terrible mistake settled in his mind. That mistake, he realized, had angered two of the most dangerous beings in existence and they were about to pay the price for their actions.
