Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha and make no profit from writing this story. |
A/N: I’ve always been curious about the beautiful crescent moon on Sesshomaru’s temple and this story will eventually depict one of my hypotheses. Summary: Death is never an easy thing, but for the one he holds above all else, Inuyasha made an exception. Warnings: Angst/Post-Tragedy/Symbolism and Metaphors Galore! Chapters will be short but meaningful. Pairing: Sess/Inu; supposed to be one-sided on Inuyasha’s part, but may change...maybe. Rating: M POV: Inuyasha. This will hold true for the entire story. Enjoy. Autograph: Prologue The other day, as I strolled along the bluest river in the western lands, I was asked by a newborn koi fish traveling the same way for some advice. He was on a journey to find his mate, for he surely believed he had one and was determined to find her soon. When I asked him why he sought me of all beings, he reminded me that his kind was symbolic of unity and fidelity and that it was his honour and duty to the gods to serve his purpose. I replied that he must have forgotten his kind also represented fertility, for they reproduced and grew in haste and numbers, which my words of wisdom would be worthless for. Yet he insisted and hailed me his ‘Providence’, while the ghost of a smile dawned on my lips as I finally understood his reasons. He was a youngling and I was his better, so by the dogma of exchange enlisted by the gods themselves, I asked if he would give me his namesake for my guidance. It was not fair of me to demand something of such importance, but I knew that if I must give a piece of myself away, I required insurance. Purities of nature like him simply did not have names; by the laws of the universe, they could not be bound. To willingly relinquish their namesake was the same as handing away their souls and consequently, their future rebirths. I saw the koi fish hesitate for only a moment before he accepted my covenant and the waters around him rippled towards me in high esteem and anticipation. “Little one,” I had exhaled softly, “I shall call you Bittersweet, for your life one day will just be so.” When he bowed slightly in acknowledgment, I continued. “This is my advice to you, my Bittersweet. You will face two rocks as you ascend your waterfall. One is complex, the other simple. But do not be afraid, for you will find the solution to one easy, and the other, only slightly more difficult. While you suffer, know that you are truly getting spoiled, and you must never underestimate simplicity, lest it be your downfall from the waters.” “You hide behind such sad riddles, then you must speak from experience. Did he impart you such wisdom, as you are doing for me?” The curious one whispered and perhaps with regret. I smiled brightly as never-fading memories of him grabbed my attention, as it always did. Briefly, I reminded myself that it would be rude of me to interrupt the little one’s journey any further and so I nodded, answering his last question. Yet the signs of remorse did not leave his eyes, which I felt compelled to remedy. “You are a koi fish and because of that, you cannot see your own fins. More importantly, you would never have tried to do such a thing, finding them insignificant of your time. Likewise, he would never see the worth of his own feet, as he would not care for something so trivial. But just as clearly as I see your fins, I saw the treasures that were his feet. I loved them if only because they walked upon the earth, and upon the wind, and upon the waters, until they reached me.” I saw that Bittersweet finally understood and I received a graceful bow of respect. We had given something of vast importance to each other and thanks were therefore unnecessary. Yet, before the young one had bid farewell, he said something equally precious to me. "My ancestors once told me… that when you looked at him,” he reminisced wistfully, “It was as if you had landed amongst the stars.” He paused. “I believe them now.” And then off he had swum to waters unknown under my watchful eye. The horizon to which Bittersweet had disappeared to that day grew saffron in front of me and I walked away from the now quiet river, having arrived at the familiar willow tree that signalled the proximity of the castle of the Great Lord of the Western Lands. Again, I would see him soon. And again, he would not see me, for I was gone. But I would see him, and that was enough.
