Fever It was the scent of illness that caught his attention. In the Feudal Era, there was no shortage of war and famine, and so therefore disease as well. It was not the scent of illness alone that gave him pause. It was the underlying scent of sweetness tainted with demonic poison that did. Sesshoumaru, Lord of the West tilted his head back to scent the wind. Opening his mouth ever so slightly he allowed more of the scent and taste of the air to fill his senses. Golden eyes narrowed fractionally before he turned on his heel and moved in the direction from which the wind was blowing. “My lord!” Jaken squawked behind him, “Where are we going? We have been heading of the coast for days now, why are now turning to head back towards the plains of Musashi?” An icy glare silenced the imp and the great demon moved on. Rin and the toad following close behind.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kagome stumbled for the hundredth time that day. Her feet growing heavier as the hours passed them by. She hoped she wasn’t coming down with something. She supposed she was just hot and tired and glared and the hanyou walking at the head of the group.
She’d felt the persistent itch at her thigh for several days now and the energy sucking heat of a higher body temperature. She’d wanted to stop but Inuyasha was insisting that they push on. He was right, in a few days the rains would start and they didn’t want to be caught in the open. So she’d kept her mouth shut and kept moving. She could make it to the next stop and she was sure with a good night’s sleep she’d be good as knew. And then, the world swung violently and tilted. Sango glanced over as her friend pitched forward, face landing harshly against Miroku’s back as he paused to look back at her. “Kagome!” The lecherous monk caught her against his body and eased her to the ground. Her cheeks hot and flushed, her breathing labored. Kagome opened her eyes slowly to peer into the concerned violet eyes inches from her own. “S…sorry” she whispered and then her lashes fluttered and she had slipped into the realm of sleep. “Oi!” Inuyasha demanded, “Whats going on?” He took one look at Kagome and his white ears flattened to his skull. “Give her to me, we’ll camp just ahead, I smell water.” He took her from the monk and flinched when he felt the heat rolling off her body. The others said nothing as they hurried into the trees. True to his word a small river bubbled cheerily over the rocks, collecting in slow moving pools before wending onward. Inuyasha settled the sleeping girl atop her sleeping bag that Shippo has spread under a large tree. “Did she say anything to you about being sick?” He asked the fox. The kit shook his head, “Nothing at all. Hey Inuyasha, do you think this has anything to do with the demon you killed a few days ago?” Inuyasha cocked his head as though considering and then reached down to lift the hem of Kagome’s short skirt. There on her thigh was the scratch she had received as the centipede had changed them all. It was red and angry looking now. “That must be it, “he said then, “Looks like she’s got a nasty infection.” He peered over as Sango and Miroku entered the clearing, “Can you dig in her bag and see if she has any antidote? Looks like that scratch is infected” he told Sango, “I’m gonna go and catch dinner.” The slayer nodded and began rummaging through the large yellow pack as the hanyou vanished into the trees. “Not fish huh?” Miroku pondered aloud. Shippo shook his head, “He probably wants red meat for Kagome to help her feel better faster.” The monk smiled at the kit, “Yes Shippo, you are probably right. Whatever his reasons, rabbit or deer will be a nice change from fish and ramen won’t it?” Sango was cradling Kagome’s head and pouring small amounts of medicine into her mouth. Her callused hands gently rubbing her friend’s throat to help her swallow. Miroku sighed, “I hope she gets better soon. I hate it when she isn’t well.” Sango looked up at him, “Shippo can you get some water from the river? Miroku, some wood please? I’m going to need to clean the wound.” Both males nodded and hurried to do what was needed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Inuyasha returned an hour later, a boar over his shoulder. “How is she?” he asked as he began to spit the beast for cooking. Sango shook her head, “She hasn’t woken up yet, I opened the wound and cleaned it with hot water and put a poultice on it to draw out the infection. “ She dropped another cloth in a basin of cool water beside her and wrung it out before laying it against Kagome’s brow. “If her fever doesn’t break by tomorrow we should take her back to the well so she can be treated in her own time.” Sango’s eyes were tired, her posture slumped. Perhaps he had pushed them too far? Inuyasha nodded and sank down beside the girl, “Go have your bath Sango, I’ll watch over her.” The slayer nodded her thanks and rose. “She’ll need medicine in about three hours, please don’t let me forget?” The hanyou waved her off, “I’ll do it. You bathe, eat and then get some sleep. Where is that monk?” Sango gestured to the trees, “He and Shippo went to go and pick some Lantern plant and other herbs for the poultice.” The half demon had nodded and turned his golden eyes back to Kagome. Reaching out his clawed hand, he gently brushed the sweaty bangs from her brow. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two days later saw Kagome worse off than before. They had tried to get her back to the well but she’d become violently ill and poor Inuyasha had ended up soaking in the spring for hours. Kagome whimpered apologies, he cussed a blue streak saying it wasn’t her fault. “No matter how sick she is” Sango said firmly, “We have to get her home. She isn’t getting better, she’s getting worse.” That night after Inuyasha was clean, he spoke in hushed tones to Miroku. Perhaps if Hachi came she could ride on him and they would be able to fly her to the well. Miroku had already thought of this and had left word in each small tea stand they passed. Now it was just a matter of time. Late that night, Inuyasha’s nose twitched as a familiar scent filled his nostrils. Eyes snapping wide he jumped from the tree he had perched in and dashed into the woods. Sango watched him go with narrowed eyes, Kikyo must be close. Sango waited to confront him upon his return, but several hours passed. It was nearing midnight when a strong youki wind rolled over her and she reached for Hiraikotsu. Kirara took her larger form but strangely remained in a calm posture. “Be not a fool Slayer.” Her eyes snapped wide and she glanced over her shoulder to see the image of Sesshoumaru appear in the small campsite, melting from the shadows like pristine moonlight. “What do you want?” Miroku came awake, fingers finding the holy beads covering his kazana, but it seemed the Western Lord had not come to fight. At least not yet. He paid her no mind and moved to stand over Kagome. “Where is Inuyasha? He is not far.” “With Kikyo” she answered before she thought better of it. Sesshoumaru lifted his head then, “The dead priestess” he said flatly, “Inuyasha must enjoy such things… soon he will have yet another dead priestess on his hands.” Sango moved between his tall form and Kagome lying helpless on the ground. “What are you talking about?” she demanded. Sesshoumaru lowered his head to meet her eyes and she found herself somewhat surprised that she didn’t die of fright, but his eyes were not cold as they usually were. “The miko, she is dying. Death looms closely now. Surely Inuyasha could smell this on her. Why then would he go to the dead priestess who is beyond his help?” Sango had no answers for him, and truth be told he seemed to be musing aloud. “Do you know what is killing her?” Shippo asked then, swallowing around the hard lump in his throat. He was terrified of Sesshoumaru, the older demon sensed that clearly, but it seemed the kit was far more afraid of losing the human woman. “Can you not smell it?” Sesshoumau asked him plainly, “The sharp, stinging scent that covers her?” Shippo nodded, “But I don’t know what it is.” “Poison” Sesshoumaru replied as though he was discussing the weather, “A powerful poison.” Sango gasped, hand flying to her mouth, “It’s been days.” Shippo, shaking like a leaf in the window approached the lord, “Can you help her?” “Shipp…” Sango began to admonish him but Miroku dropped his hand to her shoulder, silencing her. The demon considered him for a long time in silence, “Please!” Shippo had once begged Sesshoumaru to save the life of another and had been refused but Tenseiga had pulsed, forcing Sesshoumaru’s hand. The boy bowed once more, green eyes bright with unshed tears, “I will do anything! Anything! Just please save Kagome.” A vision of Rin worrying over Jaken flashed in his mind and in that moment his mind was made up. He knelt beside the woman, ignoring the cloying scent of death. His pale hand reached out to catch her cheek and tilt her head towards him. “Miko. Wake.” He commanded her. Sango didn’t like him touching Kagome, Sesshoumaru was cruel and ruthless, a powerful demon with no care for humans. They had no clue of knowing what he would do but Miroku continued to hold her back. Kagome slowly opened fevered eyes. She took in golden eyes and reached for him, “Inu…”. Her eyes narrowed in concentration, a moon. “Sesshou…”. The demon lord felt the scorching heat of her flesh, “You are dying little miko” he told her plainly. Tears welled at her lash line. “Too.. much left” she rasped, “Find…Jewel” “You have been poisoned” She whimpered as she shifted trying to sit up. A clawed hand splayed at her shoulder pushing her back, “I can burn away the poison.” She blinked, “Burn…” “Make an agreement with me Miko. I shall save you and you shall agree to terms.” Her brow furrowed, “Terms?” “To be discussed later, to linger any longer is to seal your fate.” “Sesshoumaru she can’t negotiate in this state!” Sango snapped. He ignored her, his eyes like burning hypnotic coals to Kagome now. “Decide Miko.” Her lashes fluttered her strength giving way and then she nodded, “Y…yes.” Sesshoumaru leaned over her again, nearly nose to nose and said softly, “This will be painful.” Kagome swallowed and gave a single shaky nod. Then Sesshoumaru’s large hand her skimming down her legs to lift the hem of her skirt. He eyed the wound critically, then raised his gaze back to hers. “Miko. Do not fight me.” He waited until she locked her eyes with his and jabbed his claw into the red wound. His hand began glow with fearful green light and Kagome tensed as she felt the first sting of his poison. Then she clutched her sleeping back beneath her, and finally his wrist as though she would pull him away but his venom was already inside, burning like acid waves of fire through her and she screamed harshly. Sesshoumaru was impressed that she had held her silence for so long. She was sweating and contorting now and her screams lifted into the night. The slayer and the monk watched horrified, unsure what to do. Sesshoumaru lifted the woman against his chest, “Do not fight me” he warned again, shoving her hair to the side and then he grazed his fangs along the fragile column of her throat. Her small hands fisting in his clothing, in his hair as she writhed in agony. Sesshoumaru bit down, fangs sinking to the gumline. His youki flowed through the clearing, around and through them, battling her power into submission. Dominating her so that he could control his poison. She went limp against him, the pain too much. It was then that he laid her down against the sleeping back and stood. “Sesshoumaru! What did you do to her?” Inuyasha demanded breaking into the clearing. Sesshoumaru barely glanced at him; instead he addressed the monk and the slayer. “She will recover. I shall return in three days’ time to outline the terms of this agreement.” Inuyasha was not about to be ignored, especially when his pack was concerned, “You bastard, you better answer me.” “It is none of your concern.” “The hell it isn’t. It involves Kagome!” “Whom no longer belongs to you dear brother.” “What?” “You made your choice clear when you ran to the dead priestess rather than remain here.” “But..” “Three days.” Then Sesshoumaru tightened into a ball of light and sped into the sky. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
