this fic is entirely made up by me. Enjoy!
Chapter Ten:
Mistaken Identity
The sun is up, the sky is blue, the birds are singing, and...
“Get your hands off of me!”
And everyone is suddenly wide awake.
Kagome groaned, but Leota, not being used to this, sat up as
though a gun had been fired, her right hand reaching for her sword that she’d
put by the side of her bed.
“It’s all right, Ota-chan,” Kagome said, sensing her friend’s
actions, “it’s just Sango yelling at Miroku.
He’s probably unconscious right... now.”
And, just agomagome predicted, a hollow wooden sound,
probably a bowl, reached their ears followed by a heavy thud.
“You’re good.” Leota
said, grabbing the pillow she must have thrown during the night.
“Thank you.”
“It looks to be about nine in the morning. We should get up.”
“We should; but will we?”
Leota chuckled, “Well, I don’t know about you, K-chan, but I
didn’t get a very good bath last night, so I’m gonna get up and take one while
I’ve got the chance.”
Kagome sat up, “Yeah, you’re right. Quick! We’d better go
before Miroku has the chance to wake up.”
Laughing like a pair of sixth graders, Kagome and Leota made
their way outside still in their pajamas.
“Hang on a minute, K-chan,” Leota said, disappearing inside
the hut and then coming out again with her clothes, “I’m gonna ask Kaede-sama
if she knows of a place I could wash these.”
“Okay, I’ll help you find her.”
So, both girls walked around, looking for Kaede, but finding
Sango instead.
“Hey Sango-san,” Leota began, “would you like to come bathe
with us at the spring nearby? It’ll get
you away from Houshi-sama.”
Sighing, Sango readily agreed, “It would be nice to escape
his ‘wandering’ hands for a while.”
“Great! Oh! Could you help us find Kaede-sama?”
“Sure, she’s right over there.”
“Arigatou, Sango-san!
Come on, the sooner I can find new clothes, the sooner I can take
K-chan’s pajamas off.” Leota giggled.
“Don’t worry about it!
Kaede-sama’s probably got something you could borrow.” Kagome said, leading her friends to where
Kaede was speaking to a young man.
“Excuse me, Kaede-sama?”
Leota asked, never really having spoke directly to the woman who had
helped her.
Kaede turned around, “Yes, Child?”
“Do you, perchance, have any clothing that I could
borrow? I just need to wash my clothes,
they’re kinda bloody, and...”
Leota was stopped when Kaede took her clothes from her hands
and began walking towards another hut, “Come, come. I shall wash these clothes myself. Take these in the meantime.”
“Thank you, Kaede-sama.
Very much.” Leota said as she
accepted the clothing of a priestess from Kaede’s hands.
“My elder sisKikyKikyo wore these clothes once. It will be nice to see someone wear them
again. Other than Kagome, of course.”
“You are too kind, Kaede-sama. I thank thee once more for your generosity and your
hospitality. You have made me feel very
welcome here.”
Kaede waved off Leota’s thanks with a wave of her hand,
“Think nothing of it, Child. Now, go
on. I shall have these returned to ye
as soon as I can.”
Leota bowed deeply and smiled as she stood up straight, “Jai
hara maro tao sanshan froe.”
At this, Kaede gasped and took a step back, but Leota had
already turned around and was heading towards Kagome and Sango. As soon as they were out of sight, Miroku
could be seen crawling out of the hut, clutching his head every few moments.
Finally regaining enough strength to stand, he walked over to
Kaede.
“What troubles you, Kaede-sama?”
“That girl, Leota, she knows the Ancient language.”
“The ‘Ancient language’?”
Miroku questioned.
“Yes. All who were of
any importance to the world once spoke it.
Its’ speakers, however, diminished over the years, and now only the most
noble of demons speak it, or so I was informed.”
“So how is it a girl five hundred years in the future even
knows of the language’s existence?”
“I have no idea, Lord Miroku. All I know is that when one speaks it, one cannot lie.”
“And what did she say in this Ancient language?”
“She said, ‘I hold secrets from you’, but in a word-for-word
translation she said, ‘I withhold more secrets from you’. As to what those secrets are, however, she
gave no hint.”
“Save for perhaps her speaking of the language at all.” I’m just... nervous about bathing with
others. Even if they are women.”
“Don’t be silly, Ota-chan!
You’re the one who suggested it!”
“If she only knew...”
Sighing, Leota stepped into the spring and made her way
towards the middle, lifting the bottom of the towel as she went so as not to
get it wet. Once the water got a little
past her waist, she threw the towel to the shore.
“There! Was that so
bad?” Kagome asked, splashing a little
water onto Leota’s arm.
Leota forced a smile to her lips, “No, I guess it
wasn’t. I’m sorry for almost ruining
your time away.”
“Don’t worry about it, Ota-chan!”
Sango watched Leota carefully. The younger woman was hiding something, of that Sango was
certain. She had noticed that the smile
the younger woman put on her face did not quite reach her eyes.
“Whatever she’s hiding, she’s sure doing a lot to keep it
that way.” Sango thought.
“Sango-san, is something the matter?” Kagome asked, putting a hand on her friend’s
shoulder.
It was Sango’s turn to force a smile, “Of course not,
Kagome-san. I was just thinking.”
“Come on, Sango-san,” Leota said cheerfully, the smile
finally reaching her eyes, “this is no time for thinking! It’s a mini-vacation!”
“Yeah, you can’t argue with that, now can you?” Kagome asked,
splashing the exterminator, “What good is being away from you-know-who if
you’re thinking?”
“No kidding! Let’s be
like little kids and have some fun just by getting wet!”
And so, women that were usually quiet, reserved, and just too
modest to even think about attacking the other, were doing just that.
At first, Kagome was winning by ducking under the water and
splashing the other two unsuspectingly.
Both women soon caught on to this game, however, and were working
together to defeat her.
“No fair!” Kagome spluttered, having surfaced after Leota
dunked her, “You’re ganging up on me!”
Both women looked at each other and then back to Kagome,
“So?” They asked, triumphant grins on
their faces.
“That’s cheating!”
“Cheating? I know not
the meaning of this word,” Leota said thoughtfully, “know you Sango-san, the
meaning of this alien word ‘cheating’?”
“No.”
“I thought not. So
you see, K-chan, we cannot be performing an action to which we know not the
meaning.”
“Cut that out! You’re
both cheating!”
Leota and Sango shrugged and then proceeded to ‘cheat’ once
more and hold Kagome under the water until she nearly punched Leota in the jaw.
After about a half hour of attacking Kagome, the three women
calmed down and finally decided that enough was enough.
“If we stay here any longer, we’ll be mistaken for
prunes!” Kagome joked as she carefully
climbed to the shore where she’d discarded her towel.
Lifting her thick black hair in both hands, Leota began to
wring it out like a washcloth. That’s
when she heard two gasps of surprise.
Leota chuckled dryly, “I shoulda known you’d look. Ah well, I knew I couldn’t hide them
forever. I just didn’t know I’d slip up
so soon.”
The ‘them’ that Leota was referring to just happened to be
multiple scars that crisscrossed her back.
Though they had been healed long ago, they were still pink along the
edges and a lighter tone than the rest of her tanned skin.
“What happened to you, Ota-chan?” Kagome asked softly.
“Nothing I need to worry about anymore.” Leota smiled as she slipped into the white
top of the priestess robes.
“Who gave them to you?”
“Someone I knew when I was younger. He should be dead by now.”
“Oh.” Kagome breathed
as she watched Leota pull up the red bottoms over her shirt.
Tying the bottoms with the matching red sash, Leota gave it
one last yank before combing her hair with her fingers and tying it at the base
of her neck, a few wisps deciding to rebel and frame her face.
Now even Sango turned to stare at her.
“What? They’re
covered now. What’re you two staring at
now?”
“N-N-Nothing, Ota-chan,” Kagome stuttered, “you just look
different in those clothes.”
Leota smiled as she turned around, “Do I look all right? Or do I look too much like a girl who
shouldn’t be around for another five hundred years?”
“You look fine, Leota-san,” Sango reassured her, “you look
like you’ve lived here your entire life.”
“Thank you. I hate
not being able to blend in with my surroundings,” Leota smiled again, “well,
we’d better get going.”
“Uh, you go ahead, Ota-chan.
We’ll meet you at Kaede’s.”
Leota cocked her head at Kagome, “Why? What’s the matter?”
“Nothing!
Really! Just go on ahead.” Kagome said, just short of pushing Leota out
of the clearing.
Feeling very confused, Leota let herself be ushered away.
“They’re hiding something from me,” she thought, “and
whatever it is, I’m not sure I like it.”
Deciding not to dwell on it lest she wanted a
headache, Leota began walkbackback towards Kaede’s. The breeze lifted her hair and blew the rebelling strands across
her nose and eyes, making it very difficult to think on anything for too long.
Just as she reached the midway point between the spring and
Kaede’s village, Leota saw a flash of red among the trees. Out of the corner of her eye, the red was on
her other side. Then, it stood in front
of her, golden eyes wide and questioning.
“K-Kikyo?”
Leota was confused, that was the second time she’d heard that
name since she’d been there.
“Inu-Yasha?” She
asked, her voice sounding tired.
“Kikyo...” Inu-Yasha
breathed, rushing to meet her and giving her a hug.
“Why are you...”
“Sshhh,” Inu-Yasha interrupted, “I promised I’d protect you,
didn’t I? I gave you my word.”
“But...”
“No, none of that. I
don’t care what you think about me, Kikyo.
I made a promise and I intend to keep it.”
“Inu-Yasha......”
Leota tried, almost using his name as a curse.
“You’re warm, Kikyo.
How did you get so warm?”
“I’m alive, that’s why.”
Leota said sarcastically.
Inu-Yasha backed away for a moment, and looked into her eyes,
his own looking confused, “How did you come back to life? I thought your body was made of earth and
bones? Please, Kikyo, tell me what
happened!”
“Kikyo? Kikyo! Whoever she is, I can tell you that she is
not I! My name is Leota Ookamia
Usuya! Does that sound anything
like Kikyo to you?!”
“Uh...”
“Well? Does
it?! I’m waiting!”
“Inu-Yasha!” Came another voice from the surprised hanyou,
“Shippo told us that Kikyo was here!”
Miroku and Kaede were running up the small hill that Inu-Yasha
and a seething Leota were standing on.
Kagome and Sango could been seen running from the opposite direction.
Leota’s green eyes were dark and her teeth her clenched
tightly. Her hands were fists on either
side of her waist.
“I swear, if I hear that name one more time...” She growled.
“All right, Kikyo, what do you want now?” Miroku asked, his
staff in hand, “Come to try and take Inu-Yasha to Hell with you?”
There seemed to be an audible snap to the air. The source of the snap was soon seen as lightning
crackled around the angry woman, her head down and her fists clenched at her
sides. When she finally raised her
eyes, they seemed to be glowing with an internal fire.
The kind of fire no dead-but-brought-back-to-life miko could ever
possess.
Fury raging on in her eyes, the lightning crackled more and
more often, causing everyone around her to back away.
“Oh it’s too late to back away now,” she said threateningly
without raising her voice, “you got yourselves into this mess, and now you’re
going to deal with it.”
, th, the lightning bolts bunched together to form one
baseball-sized energy ball. It split
itself in half, and then both pieces made their way to their targets.
Miroku and Inu-Yasha.
Inu-Yasha decided to try and outrun it. He was a hanyou after all, certainly faster
than any spell. However, he did not
guess that the little ball would follow him. Wherever he went, the annoying little thing would chase him,
trying to tire him.
Miroku’s punishment was much quicker. He didn’t even bother moving, which was a
good move on his part, because the more Inu-Yasha moved, the more irritated
Leota got.
When Miroku stood after being shocked, his hair had a static
quality to it. He sighed and mumbled
something about not going near water for about an hour.
Inu-Yasha was being a stubborn one, as was his main
characteristic. Finally tiring of his
not-so-evasive antics, Leota snapped her fingers and the small nuisance hit him
immediately.
Surprised he could still stand after being hit by such a
blast, Inu-Yasha stood to find everyone trying to suppress their laughter. That plan soon failed as he got closer. Everyone was now laughing at him openly.
“What’s so funny?” He
demanded.
Kagome tried to speak in between her fits of hysteria,
“That’s worse than any numbers of ‘s-words’ I could’ve given you!”
Shippo was on his back, rolling on the ground and laughing
like a jackal with tears in his eyes.
“What’s so damn funny?” He demanded once more as he turned to
the one who had done this to him, “What’d you do?”
Leota had been doubled over in laughter, but she stood up
straight just for him, “Why don’t you go look?”
Scowling, Inu-Yasha left with a huff to go look at his
reflection in the nearby river. Once he
looked into the water’s reflective surface, however, he let out a howl of
agony.
Which caused everyone to start laughing once more.
“I love it!” Kagome laughed, turning to Leota, “His hair is
puffed out about a foot from his head!”
“Static really works wonders when one is angry.” Leota nodded as she laughed again.
Inu-Yasha was probably off sulking in his tree by now, so
everyone else had decided to go back to Kaede’s hut.
“How long will it take for it to get back to normal?” Sango asked as she sat down a little bit
away from Miroku so as not to catch the static herself.
“With hair as long as his?
I’d say about two hours.” Leota
chuckled.
“I know this much,” Kagome said, “I never want you to
be that angry at me.”
Leota put her left arm around Kagome’s shoulders a squeezed
lightly, “Don’t worry, K-chan, I don’t think I’ll ever be that angry
with you. Just make sure to call me a
name that’s actually mine.”
From his tree, Inu-Yasha could still be heard cursing the
static that still made his hair look like a mane and his clothes stick just
about everywhere.
The only thing comforting him was that his hair would
eventually domesticate itself and when it did...
“Revenge will never have tasted so good.”
