Chapter 11: Apology
Rin clung to Ah-Uns back.
The young miko felt ashamed of herself for having grown afraid of riding on Ah-Un again. But still she wrapped her arms around the mounts necks and held on for fear of her life. She sighed, remembering what it used to be like riding Ah-Un.
12 years ago
"Jaken-sama! Jaken-sama, look!" Rin shouted into the air in front of her, hoping that the wind would not catch her voice and carry it away. "Jaken-sama!" she cried again, "Look!"
"What is it, you silly girl?!" Rin heard Sesshoumaru's retainer bawl into the air.
"Look, Jaken-sama! See? No hands!" Rin had removed her hands from Ah-Uns manes and was holding them palms open in front of her. "See? See, Jak-" The little girl stopped, suddenly feeling the wind beneath her, picking her from Ah-Uns saddle and flinging her effortlessly into the air.
Rin stayed in time for an instant but gravity soon overtook her, and she was sent plummeting silently down to the green patches of land below her.
She could faintly hear Jaken calling her name above her, and through her tear-blurred eyes she could see Sesshoumaru stop in mid-air and look at her falling figure. Her eyes closed.
"Sorry, Sesshoumaru-sama."
Sesshoumaru had, of course, saved her, but after she had fallen, Sesshoumaru warned her he would not tolerate such irrational behavior if she were to stay with him. But looking back on it now, was this also something that made him leave her? It dawned on Rin that she had never asked why he left her, or even anything on the matter. She figured that she was back, and she wouldn't leave again.
“Sesshoumaru-sama?” She called as loud as she could. When he didn't answer when she knew he heard her, Rin caught her mistake. "Sesshoumaru?" He still didn't answer. He couldn't still be mad could he? No, Sesshoumaru never--or as far as she could remember--held a grudge against her, why start now?
Because, her mind said viciously, you're different now. Do you really think you'd fit into that old kimono, Rin? You're not that young. That's true. She wasn't a little nine-year-old girl anymore, and hadn’t been since she was nine, for however long that had been. But Sesshoumaru, who was her lord and protector years ago, and was now, too, wouldn’t ever hold a grudge just because she looked different. She was still, Rin, right?
Her hair was the same, although it was longer, and she never put into the same style, the childish style she used with Sesshoumaru. Her eyes were the same, although older and wearier with the burden of life. She was still Rin.
The terrible truth slowly dawned on her. She was Rin, yes. But she wasn't Sesshoumaru's Rin. She was Rin the Miko, feared by youkai for her great prestige in battle, and feared by sinful men who caused trouble to the village she resided in. Rin the Miko was not Sesshoumaru's Rin.
Rin was a young lady who had grown out of her childhood and adolescence, and out of the proper time of marriage into a woman who could defend herself and didn’t need Sesshoumaru to save her. She was deadly, queenly, and sometimes ruthless. The more she thought about it, the more she realized.
She was more Sesshoumaru then she was Rin.
And in that sense, she was not Rin at all, especially to Sesshoumaru.
She felt suddenly cold, and her mind filled it self with awful thoughts. Does Rin carry armor with her? Does Rin kill youkai to save ningen? Does Rin kill? Does Rin call Sesshoumaru by his given name? Is Rin a miko? Is Rin a lady?
Rin did none of those things, nor was she any of those things. In fact, she was Rin only in body, although barely. Even Sesshoumaru did not recognize her right away. If Rin the Miko were given a different name, she would most likely cease entirely to be Rin.
That thought didn't trouble her nearly as much as the though Sesshoumaru would command her to leave again, because of the "death" of the Rin he knew.
Suddenly, Rin was aware that they had fallen behind Sesshoumaru. "Ah-Un." She said softly, "Catch up to him."
Ah-Un obeyed, and sped to meet Sesshoumaru, only slightly behind the demon lord.
As Rin looked down on the far-below ground, she was conscious suddenly of how fast and high they traveled. The sheerness of it suddenly shook her to the core and she to felt like a doe trapped between hunters. She clung to Ah-Un to keep her from seeing more, and it did nothing to make her feel safer.
{Sesshoumaru}
He sniffed lightly into the air to determine how close he was to Inuyasha's village. But instead of his brothers' scent, he could only smell Rin.
Correction. He could only smell Rin's fear. He took another sniff. He didn't smell any youkai besides Ah-Un and himself. In fact it was obvious there was nothing else there except them.
He fell back to meet the girl.
"Rin."
She lifted her face from hiding in Ah-Un.
Her face was pale and her eyes seemed fearful, although she could not keep them very well open against the strong wind.
"What’s wrong?" He asked, making sure to keep his voice loud enough so she could hear, but level enough to not give away emotion.
She spoke, but so softly that even he could not hear, even if it was against the wind.
Sesshoumaru, strangely curious to see what was wrong with the girl, took Un's mane in a clawed hand and halted them.
"What's wrong?" he repeated.
"I- I've- It's just-" she seemed unable to put into words.
"Rin" he said in a more demandingly, for as much good as that could help her speak.
She seemed to find her voice. "We're just- we're just so high."
He could almost mentally smack himself for the obviousness of her statement. Even though it had been eleven years, and Rin did look much older, he often forgot that she actually was older. To his immortal self, twelve years was only a drop in the bucket. But to Rin, that was already over a quarter of her entire life span. It surprised him to think of how truly long Rin had been away.
The smell of Rin's fear was unpleasant, not in the way that it reeked, but it was caused him discomfort, and made him feel shaky.
Sesshoumaru hated the feeling, so he did the only thing he could think of to sate Rin.
He released Ah-Un's mane and headed swiftly for the ground, signaling her to follow. She did, very quickly, and landed neatly beside him.
Swinging her lithe legs over wobbly, she shook until she nearly fell over. He caught her shoulders before she did, and attempted to set her straight. This seemed nearly exactly like the first time she rode Ah-Un.
Rin seemed to be breathing heavily and her she was shaking as if she was cold. Suddenly, she threw her arms around the lord. He could feel her quake and stood stock-still. What was he supposed to do? At least she wasn't crying.
"I never, ever, ever want to do that again. Ever." Rin seemed worse than she had seen her before. What was wrong with her?
{Rin}
The young miko wasn't exactly sure why that flight affected so. She'd never been this scared, even when it seemed she was about to face certain doom by a youkai, or when she was inside Naraku's shadow.
But Sesshoumaru automatically made her feel safer, more secure. This was nearly the entire reason why she stayed with Sesshoumaru. He and Jaken had made her feel safe, like a family, like she had felt before her mother and father and brothers died.
She felt herself calm and looked up, awake suddenly to the fact she was clinging to Sesshoumaru like some lovesick little girl.
She released him, embarrassed, but she didn't blush. Blushing would only mean that she really was embarrassed. She stood straight, and as proud and dignified as she could. She was such a child sometimes! She wasn't as like Sesshoumaru as she thought.
In fact, she was nearly nothing like him, and that pleased Rin to some degree. If she wasn't like Sesshoumaru, that meant she was more like herself, which she wanted, as long as she was like Sesshoumaru's Rin.
"I'm sorry, Sesshoumaru-sama. I'm sorry for holding you, and I'm- I'm also sorry for the things I said before. It was rude and brash. Forgive me, Sesshoumaru-sama." Rin bowed her head, ashamed.
"This Sesshoumaru is also regretful. I know you are not a child, Rin." The miko nearly jumped from her skin in surprise. Sesshoumaru had never apologized to anyone. Not for as long as Rin had known him, at least. "Can you stand?"
Rin quickly regained composure. At least he put it in his good grace to make it easy for her, she thought thankfully. She gestured herself. "I am now."
The dog lord nodded and turned briskly to continue to his brothers' village. Surprised, Rin took Ah-Uns reins to lead him and trotted to catch up to him. "W-Wait! Sesshoumaru-sama!" Rin automatically cursed herself for ordering him, but continued. "Aren't we going to fly? It's important that we get there quickly, yes Sesshoumaru-sama?"
Sesshoumaru stopped as if considering. After a few moments he said firmly, sounding like he was trying to convince himself, "Rin. Come here."
{Sesshoumaru}
The lord of the Western Lands felt entirely unsure of what he was about to do. As Rin approached him, he turned quickly and slid his arm around her waist.
At that moment, he was more afraid of Rin's reaction than he was of most things in his life. But rather than looking disgusted or appalled, she appeared abash and surprised.
Strangely pleased with her reaction, Sesshoumaru took off into the air, calling for Ah-Un to follow. "Rin." He said in a masterfully deadpan voice, "Don't let go."
