Blood and Fire
Sesshomaru knew even before he came to a halt at the edge of the encampment that was Chernobog's army that something was wrong. The air was too still...
And as he paused for a moment, Inuyasha coming to stand beside him, the wind suddenly picked up and wafted the scent of the camp toward them.
Blood.
The brothers glanced at each other before they started to pick their way slowly toward the silent camp, senses alert, watchful for any movement or anything else that would reveal a threat. Bodies were the only thing they found; where there should have been an army standing ready there were only corpses, their eyes staring up at the evening sky in vague surprise. They had all been killed by the same weapon it seemed- a large sword. Inuyasha glanced over at his brother and noticed the quiet rage building in him.
"Sesshomaru?" he said softly.
The demon came to a halt, looking down at something. Inuyasha glanced down too. It was Ros, looking peaceful in death, though the manner of her death had obviously not been so by the amount of blood that had sprayed from her wound.
"Traitor."
Inuyasha glanced over at Sesshomaru, noting the set to his jaw and the red fury in his eyes.
"Traitor," Sesshomaru hissed again. "Chernobog..." He glanced around him, practically shaking from the strength of his anger. "He betrayed these, his people. He claimed to be their lord. It was his place to protect them- not to slaughter them like swine." His hands were clenched tightly, blood seeping out from between his fingers as his fingernails cut into his palms.
"Sesshomaru," Inuyasha said, reaching out to his brother worriedly, but suddenly fire seemed to spring up all around him. It came between him and his brother, blazing up wildly, uncontrollably... He could just barely see through it to catch a glimpse of Sesshomaru looking particularly annoyed on top of his already significant anger; but then the fire blazed up more and he had to step back, away from the inferno.
Inuyasha glanced around; the fire was all around, washing him with its heat. But... he narrowed his eyes. There was someone coming toward him... The light was dim but the fire lent it strength even as its smoke masked the scent of the individual, and yet Inuyasha knew he didn't really need to see this demon to identify him. His skin shivered all over as he raised Tetsusaiga defiantly.
--
When the fire came between him and Inuyasha, surrounding his brother, Sesshomaru felt his rage increase as if fed by the flames. He glanced down at Ros, lying at his feet, and suddenly Tenseiga pulsed at his side. Startled, he glanced at the blade. He put a hand to its hilt; Tenseiga was something he carried that he did not usually consciously think about- it was too worthless to ever really take up residence in his thoughts. But... He drew the blade and narrowed his eyes at it. It pulsed again, glowing with an energy that it had never shown before, and it suddenly struck him that... He frowned. It was not his place... But Ros seemed to stare up at him pleadingly from the ground; and for a moment she was not Ros, but it was his mother glaring at him accusingly as he refused to aid her niece.
Sesshomaru snarled, and suddenly he swung the sword viciously down, cutting through the bearers of the next world as they were revealed to him, and even as Ros blinked slowly, wonderingly, he whirled and, with a wild scream of fury, crouched and leapt into the air, swinging the Tenseiga down over the camp. The blade sang a pure, high note as it seemed to explode with a feral power that spread and fell, encompassing the entire fallen army. He barely glanced at the bodies as they started to rise, but Ros caught his arm, staring at him wide-eyed and uncomprehending.
He snarled again and backhanded her. "Stupid girl," he said. "Was this was you returned here for? Did you desire death?!"
She looked at him. "He is my brother." Her voice was soft but surprisingly strong. "I had to try. One last time." Her eyes hardened with resolve. "Baikal," she hissed. "I will make Baikal pay for what he has done to my brother."
Sesshomaru sneered. "Your brother was always an ass. Whatever his power, even Baikal cannot change a creature's nature that much. Accept it, as well as the fact that you cannot defeat Baikal. To attempt so would be suicide." He directed her attention to the army, which had started to gather around her, recognizing their lord's sister. "You have others to think of before you can devote yourself to such selfish pursuits."
"Mistress." Ros recognized the captain who addressed her, his expression confused. "Mistress, what happened? We remember..." He shook his head, not wanting to admit to what his mind was telling him.
"Gather your troops," she said softly, glancing sideways at Sesshomaru. "Guide them away from the fire and get them settled." She smiled at him, comfortingly. "I'm sure everyone's very confused, but I will explain it all." The captain nodded gratefully. He was sworn to serve the bloodline of this house- as long as there was a member of the family present he would gladly take his orders and not think about them until later.
Ros paused for a moment after the captain left, but Sesshomaru didn't speak. "So," she said after a moment. Her hands clenched into fists. "Make sure he's dead."
Sesshomaru nodded, turning to leave. He sensed a presence a moment before he caught a familiar scent, and he narrowed his eyes as he glanced up.
"Well?" Baikal eased out of his crouch to stand before Sesshomaru, grinning wildly. "Here I am. Ready to make sure, as the lady asked?"
--
Inuyasha shuddered. He held his ground as Chernobog advanced on him, but when the demon started to speak he knew he couldn't hold for long.
"Well." Chernobog grinned madly as Inuyasha retreated a step, flinching at the sound of the demon's voice. "Do you plan to try to fight me? That will be a nice change. Though..." His lips pulled back, baring his teeth in an approximation of a smile. "I really cannot see this defiance of yours lasting very long at all. Besides," his smile widened and his eyes flashed, "you know this is what you really want. To bow to me, to submit to me..."
"Shut up!" Inuyasha yelled desperately, lunging forward, Tetsusaiga crashing down against the demon's sword. He glared at that sword; Chernobog had killed Ros with that sword. Inuyasha shifted his glare to Chernobog himself, gathering all of his hatred and focusing it- praying that it would be enough to stand against the fear that threatened to overwhelm him, the gibbering voice that was telling him to run, to fall on his knees and beg for mercy...
"But you know you enjoy hearing my words." Chernobog smiled as he disengaged his sword from Inuyasha's and swung it at the half breed. "They fill you with a sense of your true worth," he hissed, the words seeming to penetrate deep into Inuyasha's brain and take root there. He couldn't block the blow and only barely dodged the worst of it, the edge of the sword catching his arm and cutting him across the shoulder. Chernobog struck again and Inuyasha only barely blocked, the force of the blow and his own hesitancy allowing the demon to push Tetsusaiga so far back that Inuyasha had to put his hand on the end of the blade to prevent it from coming back and bisecting him. Their swords crossed, straining against each other, Chernobog's face was only inches from Inuyasha's own and he leered at the half breed. Inuyasha shivered, desperately seeking a way to fight against the fear that paralyzed him.
"You fought him."
Inuyasha blinked. His brother's voice was suddenly in his mind...
"Father would be proud of you."
Chernobog's sneering face seemed to move closer. "What strength do you think you have left?"
"I can smell him in you, even on this night."
Inuyasha shoved forward, throwing Chernobog off of him. The demon, off balance, stumbled backward a few steps, shooting Inuyasha a venomous glare.
Inuyasha took a deep breath, closing his eyes. "Last night I trusted you," he whispered under his breath. His grip tightened on Tetsusaiga's hilt as he looked up suddenly at Chernobog.
"You trusted me?" The demon laughed. "Or perhaps you are speaking of someone else, eh? It couldn't be that stupid bitch of a sister of mine." Inuyasha snarled and struck at him; Chernobog only laughed. "Perhaps it was someone else you trusted... Sesshomaru maybe?" The grin on his face was dark. "So, is that what you call trust- allowing him to corrupt himself on your worthless flesh? Do you enjoy it when he uses you for his pleasure?" He stepped forward; Inuyasha retreated half a step, shaking his head violently in denial.
"Inuyasha..." His name came from Sesshomaru's lips, spoken with such desire... "Inuyasha, I..." And the trembling ecstasy that was his brother's body as he convulsed with the strength of his climax, his claws making shreds of the bed sheets as he collapsed against Inuyasha, kissing the corner of his mouth softly...
"You are wrong." Inuyasha glared up at Chernobog, desperately trying to throw off his influence. If he could just get in one clean hit at the monster... He was seized by indecision and dread, his blows half-hearted at best. But Chernobog was a liar. It wasn't true. It couldn't be true...
"But you believe me," Chernobog hissed through his smile. "And that," he let his sword drop and reached forward to take an unresisting Inuyasha by the chin, "is all that matters." He stared deep into Inuyasha's eyes. "See? You call me a liar, but inside you know that I speak truth. He cannot stand you, your half breed stench is enough to make him gag. Killing you proved to be inconvenient, so he decided to use you first. And you turned out to be somewhat talented at it, hmm? Enough that he decided to forego the killing part for awhile and amuse himself..."
Inuyasha closed his eyes. No. But there was no strength in his denial as Chernobog's words wove a net of despair around him. His body went lax and he would have fallen to his knees if Chernobog hadn't held him up. I trusted you... Sesshomaru...
"Unconditionally," Sesshomaru said, his voice soft and sleepy, his arms wrapped around Inuyasha's body...
Inuyasha's eyes snapped open. He was the one who had proposed that idea- unconditional trust. His brother had offered it back to him. Could he repay such a gift with doubt? He looked up at Chernobog sharply, his heartbeat quickening with fear, but it no longer paralyzed him as he swiped his claws at the demon, forcing him back.
He followed up on the attack swiftly; he couldn't stop, couldn't pause. Thinking would give Chernobog the advantage; don't think, just act... Another swipe of his claws made Chernobog dodge left only to be met head on by a slash from Tetsusaiga.
Bleeding now, and snarling in fear himself, Chernobog searched for an exit, but the very walls of fire that the demon had used to trap them together kept him here still. Inuyasha slashed twice in succession, Tetsusaiga narrowly missing both times as Chernobog barely dodged. Inuyasha's eyes narrowed in anger and he growled out the summons of Tetsusaiga's foremost attack and belted Chernobog with the power of the Cutting Wind. The blow caught the demon completely unawares, obliterating him.
Inuyasha stood for a moment, breathing heavily, as he absorbed what had just happened. The fear that had sat with him now seemed to evaporate, as if it had never been, and he looked down at Chernobog's body with nothing more than distaste. He almost couldn't believe it had been so easy, over so quickly... His ears flattened in dissatisfaction as he turned away from the body. The fire around him had died down, proving his theory that Chernobog had controlled the flames, probably with some spell. He looked around but Sesshomaru was nowhere in sight. However... Inuyasha's eyes paused when he caught sight of Ros standing not far away.
He was more than a little surprised to see her. She came forward then, to stand over her brother's body and look down at him, tears streaming silently down her face. Inuyasha looked away uneasily. He didn't regret killing Chernobog, he couldn't, but that Ros had cared about him so deeply... She knelt beside her brother and spoke some words softly in a language Inuyasha didn't understand as she passed her hand over the body, causing it to evaporate into dust. She glanced up at Inuyasha, tears still sliding unnoticed down her cheeks. He shifted uncomfortably under her gaze, but she stood and came to him.
"Tell Sesshomaru that he cannot kill Baikal with his sword."
"What?" Inuyasha's eyes flew open, then narrowed sharply in an uncanny- and unconscious- imitation of his brother. "Why not?"
"Baikal deflects demonic auras." Ros glanced involuntarily at where her brother's body had lain until a moment ago. "None of our spells worked on him; that is what first caused Chernobog to revere him." She shook herself slightly and turned back to Inuyasha. "Toukijin's aura will dissipate when Sesshomaru tries to use it against Baikal and there will be nothing to it but the purely physical sword. And the crafty beast wears metal braces on his arms, to protect against physical attacks. That, along with his heightened speed, makes him hard to catch physically, and his ability to deflect auras makes him almost impossible to kill any other way."
Inuyasha nodded. "Thanks."
Ros nodded back, her face impassive. "I am taking my people and returning to my land."
"I thought you were..." Inuyasha stopped, because he'd more than thought, he'd known she was dead... Surprise has turned into puzzlement, but he felt exceedingly stupid when she continued, pointing out what should have been obvious.
"Ask Sesshomaru. I cannot remember anything other than that I was dead, and then I was alive and my cousin stood over me with his sword in hand."
"Dammit, Tenseiga." Inuyasha was impressed. "I didn't think he could use it like that."
Ros raised her eyebrow in mild inquiry, but apparently she was not in a curious mood because she turned away again to leave. Inuyasha watched her go. When she had passed out of the immediate range, he turned the other way and went to go find his brother.
