10. Reunions
By the morning of the fifth day, the frantic need caused by their heat had ended. The hanyou woke his mate softly, with light touches on her skin. “Wake up, love. We have to be going.”
She opened one eye that somehow refused to focus. “Going? Where? Why?”
He grinned at her. “I’m taking you to the well. I figure you’d like to go and visit your mother--she would want to know about the pup.”
Something about the way he phrased that got her attention. “You’re not coming?”
He shook his head. “I think I’ll just take you there and come back later. From what I’ve seen, you two won’t need a male presence around for this.”
She thought about her mother’s likely reaction, which was almost guaranteed to include a shopping trip, and decided that he was probably right. She nodded slowly. “She’ll probably want to drag me along on one of those marathon shopping trips, and I know how much you hate those. Okay,” she said, “I’ll go alone this time. Is there anything we need? If I have to do some shopping while I’m there, I can pick up whatever we need while I’m at it.”
Leaping to his feet, he lifted her carefully, putting her down when she started to squirm in his arms. “Let’s go and take a look in the storerooms, then.”
In the end, they decided that an assortment of dried fruits and vegetables would be a good idea, and a couple of rolls of fiberglass screening material to keep insects out of the food drying cabinet they had talked about building. He decided against adding anything more, as he had a powerful suspicion that she would have plenty of other stuff to bring back once she told her mother what was going on.

“Guess what, Mama?”
The older woman looked up from the batch of cookie dough she had been stirring. “Kagome! What are you doing here? I didn’t expect to see you for a few more weeks. And why,” she added, looking around the empty kitchen, “Are you here alone?”
The younger woman shrugged. “We decided that it would be best for me to come back alone this time. He’ll be along later on--probably around dark--to take me home.”
“I see,” she said. “Now tell me what you’re not saying.” She looked at her daughter again, noting that she seemed to be even happier and healthier than when she had left several days before. “Already?!?”
She nodded. “As things turned out, Mama, I entered the fertile part of my cycle just after we went back. Since it’s early spring, that forced him to go into heat--spring is the normal mating season for inuyoukai--and one thing led to another, and--”
The older woman sank into a chair. “How could you know so soon? I mean, you haven’t even been gone a week.”
“He’s got a very good nose, Mama. He could tell when I came ‘into heat,’ as he calls it. He wanted to leave for a few days so that we wouldn’t have an accident, but I wouldn’t let him. He told me we were successful at starting a pup yesterday. Then, he brought me here today so that I could tell you.”
“Well,” she said, “That explains why he didn’t hang around.” She covered the cookie dough and placed the bowl into the refrigerator. “Ready?”
The younger woman blinked in surprise. “Ready? For what?”
“If I’m going to be a grandmother, we have a lot of shopping to do.”
She looked at her mother with something like relief. “You’re not mad?”
“Mad! I’ve been waiting for this for more than a year now. Let’s see,” she muttered, “If this just happened within the past week, that would put your due date somewhere around the middle of December--I suppose you’ll be coming here for the delivery?”
She stood in silence for a few seconds, then shook her head. “I don’t think so, Mama. Think about the situation for a minute--there’s a good chance that our kids will look at least a little like their father. How do you suppose a doctor here would take that? I don’t want him--or her--to be looked at with pity because he’s misdiagnosed as having some kind of birth defect or deformity. My family is going to understand that whatever they happen to look like is because that’s what’s normal for them.”
The older woman nodded. “I hadn’t thought of that. Maybe we can work out a way for me to be there.”
“We can try, but I don’t know how it’ll work. As far as I know, only the two of us can go through the well. We’ll have to give it a little thought.”

The hanyou returned to the fallen cherry tree he had found in the forest. Using the tools they had brought back from Kagome’s time, he cut a thick slab of the wood more than six feet in diameter. He also cut another chunk of the tree about four feet long that he would use for another purpose later on. It took him much of the day to return the wood and the tools to their home. The tools were replaced in the storage room, while the slab of wood and the larger piece were hidden in the forest nearby.
Glancing up at the sun, he realized that there were still a couple of hours left until sunset, so he spent a little time peeling the bark from the wood. One thing that his difficult early life had done for him was that having to learn to feed himself at an early age had taught him patience. Realizing that the cross-section of the tree trunk that he had cut was almost perfectly circular, he began the long, slow process of smoothing all of the surfaces to an almost glasslike finish with a hand plane.
He estimated that it would take several afternoons’ worth of work to bring the piece of wood to the smoothness he desired. He counted out the days in his head, thinking that it might just be possible to have the surprise ready by the time they had been mated a full month.
Hiding the started project as well as the other section of tree trunk in a crevice in the rock face not too far from where the stony outcropping disappeared into the forest, he went to the village’s best metalworker for some help. By the time the negotiations were completed, it was nearly nightfall, so he made his way to the well and leaped in.
He wasn’t especially surprised to see the two women sitting in the kitchen drinking tea. He was even less surprised when his mate greeted him with a brilliant smile and a fierce embrace. The lack of tension in her body told him that the meeting with her mother had gone well. “Did you have a good time?”
“As a matter of fact,” she said, “I did. I got all the supplies we needed, and a few other things I’ll be needing later on.” She dragged him in to sit down with the pair. “What did you do today while I was gone?”
He shrugged. “Not very much. I went down to the village for a while and arranged for a few more futons for home--if the others are moving in in a couple of days, we’ll need somewhere for them to sleep. They can bring them out on Kirara when they come out.”
She nodded, showing him some of the things the two women had purchased earlier in the day. “I was thinking about that, too. We got some extra blankets, and a couple of big bags of wool and cotton yarn so that I can make some things for the pup. Mama also insisted that I get some patterns so that I can make some clothes for when I get too big for the things I have right now.”
The older woman glanced at her son-in-law. “I’m glad your friends will be moving in with you. Kagome will need to have another woman around as she gets closer to her time. Yes,” she said, seeing the protest in the hanyou’s eyes, “I know that you can take care of her better than anybody else, but there are just some times when women need the help of other women.” She poured him a cup of tea and passed him the plate of cookies. “Kagome tells me that you had some questions about what kind of activities would be safe for her.”
The young man blushed furiously. He hadn’t expected that his mate would repeat such a private conversation to her mother. “That’s right,” he said. “I don’t want to hurt her or the pup by accident.”
She nodded in sympathy. “My husband worried about the same kind of thing. I have a couple of books that should help to explain everything. Believe it or not, pregnant women aren’t quite as fragile as most men seem to think, especially if they’re extremely healthy to begin with. They’ll also warn you about some of the things that will be happening over the next several months--you should read them as soon as possible so that these things don’t take you by surprise.”
She got up from the table, moving around the room and gathering the things that she was sending along with her daughter. “Don’t forget--I want both of you to feel free to come and visit at any time. You don’t need any special reason to come--I think that you’ll each need to come and visit just to talk every now and then.”

Fortunately, there wasn’t more than they could carry. Still, the hanyou decided that a two-hour walk through the darkened forest would not be in the best interests of his mate. They went instead to the village. The others were delighted to see them, offering them a hot meal. At first, they declined, saying that they had to find a wagon they could borrow to get home, but when Sango offered them the help of her firecat youkai companion they changed their minds, settling in to talk over the details of the move then would be making in two days’ time.
By the time Kagome’s head was nodding, they had pretty much worked out the details, so the hanyou and his mate took their leave of their friends until they were ready to make their move. Even though the firecat youkai would never allow one of her friends to fall, Inuyasha kept a tight grip on his mate during the entire brief trip back home.
