She was shocked. Shocked and a little bit disappointed. She'd hoped that everything she'd seen so far would be wrong. That this demon; this thought-provoking, ecstasy-inducing epitome of all her girlish fantasies; wouldn't be the monster everyone had made him out to be. That there was something beneath the surface. But as she clutched the Tetsusaiga to her chest, the remnants of the putrid sweet-smelling ooze dripping away from her skin, a small part of her began to doubt that there was anything to the cryptic glances she knew she couldn't have imagined pointed in her direction.
It hurt somehow, and the confusion ran deep. She couldn't forgive this. Not now. She couldn't keep on betraying herself and her friend this way. True, he was sometimes brash and rude and ungrateful, but there was something palpable there; something more tangible than mere daydreams and one-sided hope.
Forget that look on his face when he appeared in front of you that day. Forget what you think you saw in his eyes when you offered the sword to Inuyasha. Forget that flicker of regret before he raised his hand against you. Just remember the pain.
"I'm gonna make you regret that, so you'd better be prepared!" she yelled, forcing her hurt into a ball of anger as she handed the mystical blade over to Inuyasha. "Here. Somehow, I think the sword's stronger than we thought. Go for it, Inuyasha!"
"Hey..." the hanyou sputtered in surprise. "How come... you're still alive?!"
She looked herself over, ignoring the heated gaze she could feel piercing into her. "Hm?"
"So," Sesshoumaru's velvety voice carried across the wide chamber, the amusement in his tone not lost on her. "She was protected by the sword's barrier... How very amusing... "
Then the whirlwind began. Frigid and unrelenting, a storm of strangely fragrant youki blasted past her head, hissing in her ears like an angry viper.
What's wrong with him, anyway? she groaned in frustration, hiding from his knowing gaze. Why does he have to be such a jerk?
He was saying something, she realized, peeking from behind Inuyasha's elbow. She was trapped, lost in the depths of his eyes as they focused in on her. They flashed indignation, flickering for an instant from cold rage to mild confusion, then glazing over entirely in red. Kagome stood, dumbfounded by what had just occurred. She was staring not at the infuriating demon prince, but into the jaws of a monstrous beast.
"He... transformed?!"
"He's showing his true self," she vaguely heard Inuyasha explain. "Hide over there, Kagome!"
And then she was alone, standing in awe of this creature that pulsed with such tremendous power, she could feel it coursing beneath her own skin. She blinked, shaking her head as she found herself lost in a euphoric sea, gasping and running to the side as she barely escaped being mauled by said beast.
I'd better get out of here , she panted to herself an instant before Inuyasha called out to her.
"Kagome! It's poison! Don't breathe in! You have to get to higher ground!"
It was a long climb out of that ancient crypt. As sunlight hit her tingling skin, she could scarcely figure out how she had made it to the surface so quickly. She crawled to a nearby outcropping of mossy underbrush, gasping as the ground rumbled and from the abyss, Sesshoumaru's great form appeared. She screwed up her courage, squaring off her shoulders and calling out to the hanyou.
"You can do it, Inuyasha!" she cried, refusing to look at the dog demon that growled in warning not too far away. "You got him with that last hit!"
"What?!? It barely did any damage!"
"But it is your sword," she pressed, burying the sense of betrayal with a bright smile. "I believe you can do it!"
The ungrateful hanyou grunted. "I don't know how you can be so cheerful. I'm strong enough to survive, but you... you'll probably get killed anyway."
She stepped back, forcing the feeling of doubt from her mind. "I... You think so...?"
"Ah jeez, you're not crying are you? Don't cry! Just... get back and let me protect you!"
She stared up at the hanyou, scarcely believing her ears as he strode off toward the battle that awaited him.
He said he'd protect me... He's mean and rude... so different from Sesshoumaru... But maybe somehow...
She stepped from her hiding place, nearly tripping over the little green minion she'd seen at Sesshoumaru's side. Frowning at his boastful words aimed to infuriate the hanyou, she picked up a nearby rock and aimed for his head.
"Shut up, you stupid toad!" she yelled, sending another stone flying. Inuyasha's my only hope... He's something real... Something to hold onto... Please... You can do it, Inuyasha!
Rising to her feet, she looked over the scene before her. He truly was going to do it. He would...
Red glaring eyes shifted to her just as Inuyasha prepared to deal a blow to the demon's chest. She gasped, seeing Sesshoumaru's eyes settle on her for the briefest instant. He made to move toward her, jumping skyward... and then disaster struck. Taken aback by the demon's movement, Inuyasha strafed right and struck. Kagome's heart clenched as the blade dug deep, slicing in an arc along the dog demon's left paw. Before Sesshoumaru could recover and recoil, the hanyou struck again, severing the entire arm halfway to the shoulder.
No!!
The anguished cry nearly left her lips as the great demon fell, half bathed in his own blood. She clenched her eyes shut as Inuyasha shot forward a second time, dealing a deadly blow to the throat.
This is what you wanted , she screamed in her own mind. This is what you asked for! Don't you dare look away!
But even before she opened her eyes, she knew he was gone. His presence, so terrible and imposing, was nowhere to be found now. Lowering her eyes in shame, she tightened her fist.
It's my fault... But... NO! I didn't make him look at me. I didn't distract him from that fight. What he got... he deserved...
Shaking the thought from her head, she rushed to Inuyasha's side "Inuyasha... Are you ok?"
He laughed. "I guess I should thank my dad for leaving me such a nice inheritance..."
She looked away, staring down at the ground as the flea demon Myouga made a sudden appearance.
He got what he deserved, she thought again, struggling hard to believe her own words. Didn't he...?
Kagome sat up abruptly, her head spinning as she struggled to shake off the remnants of the dream. She held a shaking hand to her heart, panting and wiping away the sweat that condensed on her forehead.
"A dream...?" she whispered into the darkness of her room, her eyes wandering to the window where the light of the moon shone dimly in. "No... Not a dream..."
*~~~
It rained for thirteen days.
Seated dejectedly in the chair beneath her bedroom window, Kagome stared into the bleak haze of icy rain that continued to pour unceasingly from the black clouds overhead. Half-lidded eyes drooped fractionally lower as she heaved a sigh. There was nothing to do on these rainy country days, except to think. And that was the last thing she wanted to do.
Thinking meant remembering; something she'd tried hard not to do for almost a year.
What's WRONG with me? she wondered, her chin in her palm as she leaned closer to the window. I tried everything I could to keep from thinking about the others. So much to bury those nightmares and start over again. Why are they coming back now?
She lifted her other hand to trace a drop of water that slid down the outside of the glass.
It was poetic justice, somehow, this sudden bout of hellish nightmares. It was a sign from the gods of her ungrateful attitude. Reminders that her period of mourning wasn't finished yet. What right did she have to find happiness now? And with him, of all people? She hadn't even made amends for the wrongful deeds she'd done. Hadn't even apologized for...
She balled her fists, clenching her eyes shut and gritting her teeth.
"No more," she groaned to herself, glaring down at her hands. "I don't want to feel like this anymore. Please..."
She sobbed silently, hands covering her face, shoulders quivering. The misery washed over her in sick, chilling currents. Curling into herself, she leaned her warm cheek against the glass and heaved another shaky sigh.
" I've been so stupid," she whispered into the stillness.
" Kagome! Phone!" Souta's voice rang loudly from somewhere downstairs.
She dragged herself to her feet, reaching for the cordless phone on her desk, and pressing the button to talk.
" I got it," she called down, waiting for the sound that would tell her he had hung up. " Hello?"
" Outside," the deep, enigmatic voice came from the other end, sending a warm flood of color into her cheeks. " Take the phone with you."
She paused, unsure of herself. " It's... it's raining," she whispered shakily.
His laugh was low and tinged with amusement. " Afraid of a little water, are we?"
Flying to her closet, she snatched her raincoat from its hanger in the back and ran to her door. The hallway outside was quiet, the only light coming from beneath her mother's bedroom door a little ways down from hers. She strode toward the door, raising a hand to the knob.
" Mom-"
" Don't wake her," he scolded lightly through the receiver at her ear. " You won't be gone long."
She bit her lower lip and hurried past her mother's door, grabbing the banister as she ran down the stairs. With a quick look into the living room, she saw that Souta was busy with yet another video game. She drew a breath.
" Shhh..." the voice came, silencing her before she could say a word.
She nodded, blushing as she realized that no one was there. Turning, she headed for the front door. Her shoes were where she left them, on the small rug near the coat rack. Three umbrellas hung where jackets should have been, and she slipped her feet into her slippers as she grabbed one from the bunch. Turning the knob slowly and carefully, balancing the phone at her ear, she slipped outside. The lock slipped back into place without a sound.
" The lake," he whispered simply, and there was a soft click, followed by a dial tone.
She stared down at the thing in her hand. Brow furrowed, Kagome tightened her grip on the phone. It was dark outside. Dark and rainy, and infinitely terrifying with the prospect of being wet and vulnerable alone with... She closed her eyes, taking a few deep breaths before setting the receiver down on the porch rail, then opening the umbrella and ducking out into the pouring rain.
*~~~
He could sense her growing near.
Slipping the cell phone into his pocket, Amaru allowed his eyes to drift closed as he waited. The rain had long since soaked through his jacket and pants. His hair was matted to his brow, drenched and getting wetter still as he turned his face toward the sky.
He was possessed.
The word itself made him laugh, but the meaning behind it was true enough. The girl plagued him. He'd done little more than think of her, and the words they'd shared, for the past thirteen days. This feeling, this new center of interest, had awoken something in him he'd left dormant for centuries gone. Yet here it was again, compelling him to move. To take action. And this time, he was ready to accept the challenge.
He breathed in deeply, hoping to catch her scent again through the downpour, and reminding himself just how much he hated the rain. The flow of moisture did strange things to his senses. It was... unnerving, not being able to fully decipher the different scents that flowed around him. He nearly sneered up at the angry clouds, frustrated with their insistence on obscuring his sense of smell. Undaunted, he took a long, slow breath once again.
His eyes opened. She was nearer than before. But... Was that doubtfulness in her scent? Had he misread her reactions to him? He frowned. No. She wouldn't turn from him now. He had made his advance. There was no room, now, to refuse.
Eyes narrowed, Amaru listened intently, growling as a drop of water landed squarely in the center of his brow. It was irrational, this sudden bout of annoyance for the time it was taking her to respond. She had to have known what his intentions were. He'd made them clear enough before his departure that night. It was a very sudden move into the unknown, but he somehow knew she could face the ordeal with no trouble at all. It wasn't enough now to try and recreate something from the past, as he'd planned. The boy had seen to that, sticking his brazen hanyou nose into Amaru's business despite the warnings. It was only natural that he put the meddlesome creature in his place, after all, but a true hunter took things by stride.
His youki spiked fractionally, flooding the lake shore with a bittersweet aroma; condensing into a light mist as the heated acid met frigid rain. Little time need be wasted in consideration of Inuyasha and his idiotic over-protectiveness. There were events already set into motion that even the hanyou had no control over. And despite this deep set need to make haste toward his goal, it was just a matter of time. He knew Kagome's feelings for him, but it wasn't her heart that needed to be tested this day. It was her loyalty.
" Sess-- Um... Amaru..."
Even her voice had begun to do strange things to him. He could feel the low, throbbing pulse begin somewhere near the pit of his stomach at the utterance of his name. He turned toward her slowly. It wasn't purely lust that drew him to the girl. This was something greater. Something needing to be explored to fully make sense of it all. And exploring was precisely what he intended to do.
She stood, panting and half-wet only a feet away from him, her hands clenched so tightly around the handle of an umbrella, her knuckles shone white as snow. She loosened one hand, using that arm to wrap about herself as though to ward off the cold. Something deep inside uncurled, warming ever so slightly at the image she made: raven-haired siren, washed ashore by a relentless storm. Her clothing clung to her where the rain had splattered, outlining every dip and curve for him to appreciate.
" You may enjoy wandering around in the rain, but humans tend to get sick doing things like this. You're really trying to kill me, aren't you?"
The question struck an awkward chord, and he raised an eyebrow, trying to place its origin. He could see her eyes open wide at her own comment, the color rising to her cheeks.
" Sorry..." she whispered, a drop of water catching her on the tip of her nose as she stared at her feet. " I seem to always say the stupidest things around you."
His eyes followed the rise and fall of her chest as she sighed heavily. " This melancholy persona doesn't suit you, Kagome."
She squirmed a little, and he laughed lightly to himself.
" Do I make you uncomfortable?"
He strode toward her, careful not to move too quickly as her scent became lightly laced with uncertainty. Her chin raised, her eyes settling on him as he stopped before her. They gazed into each others' eyes for a long moment before she decided to speak.
" Not uncomfortable..."
" Oh? Then why so hesitant?" he asked quietly, reaching up and sweeping a vagrant strand of hair behind her ear.
The color darkened in her cheeks. It was amazing just how easily he could unnerve her. Her skin warmed at his touch, her eyes widening and her breath catching. He could almost feel the shivers that undoubtedly coursed along her limbs, and found himself leaning slightly forward to catch her scent.
" I don't understand," she murmured, turning her face away abruptly and staring out across the water. " I don't know why all this is happening. Why it's so easy to be out here with you... And I still can't think about anything else, except..."
Her brow furrowed, and he stepped in closer, following a line of water along the curve of her shoulder with his thumb.
" Except...?" he coaxed lightly, his hand finding the other side of her neck and massaging the quivering nerves there.
" Why are you even talking to me?" she whispered breathlessly. " As if we're friends. As if... I don't know. Why don't you hate me, Sesshoumaru? For what I did... What I did to you... It was so much easier that way..."
He smiled, leaning his head toward hers and pressing his lips to her ear. He was close enough to feel her ragged intake of breath; could hear the shaky sigh that escaped her lips. One hand remained at her neck, the other rising to cup her left elbow as he drew her backward against him.
" Is there reason that I should hate you?" he breathed softly against her skin.
Kagome could feel her limbs becoming heavy, her senses splintering into a million directions as his warmth permeated her skin. She let her eyes drift closed, ignoring the burning urge to turn toward him. Breathing deep, she tried to settle her nerves.
He even smells perfect , the thought came unbidden, her nostrils filling with the strange ecstatic aroma that was distinctly his.
She swayed slightly, and melted into his arms when he caught her.
" I have no reason to hate you," he whispered, so softly she had to lift her head to hear him.
His lips grazed her cheek, and she blushed even redder. " I thought you did..." she breathed, finding herself unable to turn away as he nuzzled her shoulder. " After that day... I was so confused. You attacked me. You... you tried to kill me. And I thought, the way you looked at me before..."
His hands rested lightly on her forearms. His head hung just above the curve of her neck, mouth barely brushing the heated skin there. She could feel her muscles weaken, her hand finally dropping to her side, the umbrella falling soundlessly to the grassy lake shore. The rain came down on her, cold and surreal, waging war against her painfully heated flesh. She breathed in raggedly, struggling to keep her mind afloat in the sea of intoxication.
" Emotions," he was saying, cool lips pressing to her now drenched skin, " were difficult. Feelings are unfamiliar territory for a demon... Wanting without understanding. Desiring without cause or reason... To see you so eagerly bend to that half-breed's will, knowing that you would find bending to my own so much more enjoyable..."
Her breath caught and her eyes widened. His words did strange things to her. She could feel her insides twist, the excitement boiling low in her abdomen. It wasn't just his words, however. Something in the air... something surrounding them both... It tugged at her consciousness, persistent and unrelenting. She wanted him. With every last fiber of her being, she knew she wanted him. Just as she knew, without a doubt, that he wanted her in exactly the same way.
" I have had time to change," he went on softly, his left hand rising to catch her chin, turning her face around to his. " Time to learn, and to adapt. To forgive."
Her lips parted, the breath of her sigh caressing his cheek. Without persuasion, she turned toward him, one delicate hand resting against his upper arm. Her eyes shone, something deep within calling out to him, innocently unaware of what that simple gaze proclaimed.
" I never meant for it to happen," she whispered broken, a salty tear slipping from her eye to blend with the water that spattered her face. " I just didn't understand... Sesshoumaru..."
Kagome's eyes drifted slowly closed, her head inclined as she leaned into him. He watched her movements through a half-lidded gaze, smiling inwardly as a soft mewing sound escaped her throat. Hands clasped about her sodden form, he drew her nearer, readily awaiting the moment their lips would meet. He didn't have to wait long.
She was salty and sweet, her mouth fully compliant, her body pressing into his of its own free will. Her hands trembled as they grasped the material of his shirt, hanging on for dear life itself. The scent of her need wafted around them in uninhibited waves, overpowering his youki and driving his hunger down in a submissive undercurrent. His eyes widened fractionally as her fingers made their way past the buttons of his shirt to press his hot flesh beneath. Her mouth became more insistent, lips parting and tongue seeking his.
He had to suppress a growl as her hips drew in near, assaulting his baser nerves with unassuming ignorance. Her panting moan sent a feral shudder down his spine. He held her tightly, seeking to appease the unruly beast with the assurance of her willingness to receive him. The sinister, cloying desire refused to be pacified, however, and he found himself drawing from her touch. She reached for him unconsciously, and he took a step backward.
Kagome's eyes widened as she stared into Sesshoumaru's steely gaze. The feelings had overtaken her so quickly, she hadn't even realized what they were doing. Until he'd stepped away from her, breaking the trance. Her hands trembled as she touched her aching lips, stormy eyes coming to meet his red-streaked irises.
" Sesshoumaru...?" she gasped, confusion heavy in that single word.
He clenched his jaw tightly, willing his raging blood to cool. It was too soon. Much too soon to take a step such as this. But his experiences told him that she would need to be comforted, be reassured that indeed they were headed in the correct direction.
Loosening the fist he hadn't been aware he'd clenched, he stepped close to her once again. " You will continue this sentiment," he murmured, doing his best to make her understand. " If you are accepting of this; of where our little... game will eventually lead... Then you will use that name. My given name. I wish to hear it uttered only by these lips."
He brushed his thumb across her lower lip, smiling as the heat rose to her cheeks once again. Stifling the urge to claim them in another kiss, he bent his head close to her ear instead.
" For my ears only, you will use that name, Kagome," he murmured lowly, breathing her scent deeply before moving away.
She stood stock still, eyes closed as she waited for his next move. A moment went by, and when she opened them again, he was gone.
Kagome looked up at the slowly lightening sky above her. She didn't have to look for him this time, she knew. As the clouds began to roll back and dissipate, the heavily floral scent of poison diminishing with them, she smiled to herself.
I wasn't dreaming... I didn't imagine it...
She breathed deeply, spreading her arms wide and turning in a full circle, her head thrown back as she laughed, truly laughed, for the first time in months.
I always knew, somehow. You do forgive me...
And now, she whispered into the cool evening air as she bent to retrieve her overturned umbrella, maybe we can start all over again
