Blooded
Sango's fingers traced their way over Miroku's face one more time, refusing to believe he was dead.
She touched the corner of his mouth and would have given anything she possessed to have seen it curl again in that familiar grin. She shuddered, emotion threatening to overwhelm her, but there wasn't time for that.
Naraku pulled at Kohaku's limp body and her sword came out so fast the tentacled limbs were severed before the demon knew what had happened. Sango glared up at him, seeking the monster's face. The emotion that had threatened to overwhelm her drained away and left her empty. She would destroy Naraku now, she thought as she rose to her feet, and then she would die, and it would be over. Over...
She dimly felt someone coming up behind her, but she didn't really register the presence until she heard the soft humming sound of a sword swinging down as it cut an arc through the air, and through Miroku's still body. Sango turned toward whoever this newcomer was, rage flowing back up through her. How dare this person touch his body...
But as she whirled to blindly attack, Sesshomaru caught her by the arm and shook her. "Calm yourself Slayer." Recognizing him Sango hesitated, her sword point dropping as her grip went lax.
His eyes were narrowed appraisingly as they flickered over Sango and the bodies that lay to
either side of her. He released her, giving her a slight push toward Miroku, as he said absently, "See to him." The humans taken care of for the moment, Sesshomaru surveyed the rest of the battle. He caught Inuyasha's eye through the trees, but the half-breed barely had time to acknowledge his
brother's presence before he dodged another blow from Naraku, whirling around to return a strike full force. Frowning, Sesshomaru moved toward him.
Sango stared after the demon for a moment, too dazed to do anything else. But then she heard a soft moan and, looking down, she saw Miroku's eyelids fluttering, his chest rising as he breathed, and her knees gave out and she collapsed beside him. "Miroku," she called softly, hardly daring to believe she had been mistaken.
"Sango?" he mumbled, trying to move his left arm, still bound to his side. She tried to stop him,
but he kept pulling at it one-handedly so she helped him undo the binding. "It doesn't hurt," he murmured. She touched his face, noticing his fever was gone too. "What... happened? I..." He frowned, his eyes drawn to his right hand, curled into a tight fist; Sango retrieved the rosary from where it had fallen near them.
"You were dead," she said, finally understanding. "Sesshomaru, he..." She glanced after the
demon's retreating form. "His sword... He brought you back."
Miroku shook his head in disbelief, but he remembered what he had been trying to do before and
looked up at her, worry creasing his brow. "Kohaku? Is he..."
She crawled the short distance to her brother's still form to check on him. "He's fine," she said,
smiling at Miroku. "You saved him from Naraku."
"Naraku," Miroku murmured, turning to glance at his nemesis, his eyes narrowing intently.
Sango wanted to stop him, to pull him back- to not lose him again- but instead she gathered Hiraikotsu where it had dropped and stood beside him. There was still work to do, and they couldn't leave it all to the demons.
--
Sesshomaru struck out at Naraku as he moved around the monster, more in an effort to distract him from the humans while Miroku recovered from the effects of the Tenseiga than to really do him harm. He wanted to find Inuyasha... And someone needed to get that stupid wolf away from Naraku; keeping as many of the shards in play as possible kept Naraku busy trying to gather them, and the more distracted the monster was the easier it would be to kill him.
Inuyasha was beside him suddenly and Sesshomaru turned his head slightly to cast an appraising glance over his brother; the look was brief, but Sesshomaru could tell more about his brother's condition with his nose- Inuyasha's scent reassured him that the half-breed was fine. However... "You have not found Kagome."
As observations went it wasn't the most stunning, and Inuyasha answered it with a sharply snorted intake of breath as he kept his eyes on Naraku. "No sign of her," he confirmed needlessly. "But dammit she has to be close."
Sesshomaru's eyes narrowed intently as he regarded Naraku, even as the pair defended against the monster's attacks. "It is strange," Sesshomaru murmured, "but Naraku... something is different in his scent."
Inuyasha shot his brother a quick glance. "Different? How?"
Kouga was beside them suddenly. He'd calmed from his earlier rage, but his eyes still blazed with a
deadly intensity. "You sense it too," he observed as Sesshomaru leveled a pointed glare at him.
Inuyasha growled at the both of them. "What the fuck are you talking about?!" he demanded,
but both demons ignored him.
"Be sure you keep your precious shards away from him," Sesshomaru chided Kouga. "Take this," he said to Inuyasha, handing him Tenseiga.
Inuyasha's eyes flew open wide. "Why? What are you doing?"
Sesshomaru didn't answer, his jaw falling open in a loose grin as his eyes blazed red... and suddenly his jaw seemed to grow longer, his teeth larger, his body larger; four, huge, velvet-pawed
feet hit the ground as his tail lashed his side in annoyance and he bayed once, an impossibly loud sound for those who stood beneath him. Crouching, he leapt at Naraku, massive jaws dripping poison as they latched onto the monster's amalgam of a body. Naraku shot Sesshomaru a
decidedly displeased look; several tentacles targeted the demon, wrapping around his legs. Sesshomaru snarled, deep in his throat, releasing his hold on Naraku to snap at the annoying limbs, but Inuyasha was there, Tetsusaiga making short work of the ensnaring tentacles.
A flicker of appreciation at his brother's aid passed through Sesshomaru, but he focused on Naraku. Red eyes scanned the monster's body; in this form his senses were even more acute, and Sesshomaru could see it now- a sort of aura around a section of Naraku's body which was slightly altering his scent. Leaping forward, he used both forepaws to pin down the monster, his jaws
snapping down to close around his body.
Naraku hissed, his eyes flying open wide as he suddenly focused all his effort on repelling Sesshomaru, long spider-like limbs scratching over the demon's face, pushing at his body. Sango's flung Hiraikotsu tried to distract him, as did Kouga's unexpectedly deciding to linger temptingly just within easy reach, and the almost omnipresent biting sting of Tetsusaiga, the entire company seeming to understand that importance of what Sesshomaru had found.
Sesshomaru tore away suddenly, something obviously being carried in his mouth. He turned away from Naraku, toward where Miroku and Sango stood, and spat whatever it was at their feet.
--
Kagome felt the power of the jewel, pulsating around her. It was so close... She thought she slept, and when she woke she saw Naraku's face hovering over her. For some reason, it evoked no emotion in her, but she was so close to the jewel... so close...
The power that had been inside of her for her entire life, the power she'd never even noticed, was now like the heat of the sun only inches from her face. An inexpressibly strange and... disgusting... feeling enveloped her; something was oozing around her, surrounding her. She wanted to scrape at her skin, pushing whatever it was far away, but she couldn't seem to move. But strangely, the power of the jewel... it was closer now.
She could reach out... And then she was touching it, her fingers closing around it, and her mouth fell open as she tried to gasp in a breath. She'd forgotten she was still inside of the ooze, but the power of the jewel was forming a barrier around her, between her and whatever it was. So close... The jewel was so close to being complete... It wanted to be complete, wanted it with a strength that should not be a part of such a small, inanimate object... Kagome shivered as time seemed to stop around her, everything extending into eternity as the jewel encompassed her consciousness.
It felt awhile later, that something shifted in Kagome's world. Walls came down, cutting through her world to surround her. Acid seemed to melt off these walls, dissolving this world, but the power of the jewel was still between her and everything. She was expelled out from between those walls, and she hit the ground, coughing for air.
Miroku was beside her, holding her up from collapsing completely, helping her breath better. She
shuddered, repressing nausea, as she realized where she had been- as she glanced up to see a
vexed Naraku glaring down at her; Sesshomaru's huge demon form stood close by as well, watching her with one large, red eye.
"Hey." Kouga brushed her hair back from her face, and seeing him made her remember.
"Kouga." Kagome raised one hand, the fingers curling around his forearm, her other hand wrapped tightly around something else- a small round orb, huge in the impact it had had on the world. "I need..."
But he cut her off. "I know." He rubbed his legs, where the jewel shards were glowing.
"I can feel it."
At his acknowledgement, the power she was only barely holding in check seemed to reach out and pull the shards toward it, and, as she uncurled the fingers of her other hand to reveal the iridescent sphere, it started to glow. It absorbed Kouga's shards into itself, becoming slightly more whole, and Kagome realized she was already crying- she knew what she had to do next. She looked up at Sango.
Sango was watching her with careful eyes, and she nodded, once, when Kagome met her gaze. She knelt beside Kohaku, turning him so he lay on his stomach and the shard in his back was easily visible; it was glowing, like the almost perfectly round jewel in Kagome's hand.
From out of nowhere, Inuyasha touched her hand and Kagome looked up at him. He brushed the tears from her eyes, and seemed to be asking her something, but she couldn't hear what it was over the roaring in her ears. Glancing at something behind her, Inuyasha's face hardened and he released her to spring between her and Naraku to block a blow she hadn't even seen coming, double swords crossing in a high guard; she could feel his deep growl rumbling through the ground. Better to get this over with, she thought as she leaned down over Kohaku, holding the glowing jewel in
her hand close to the shard imbedded in his back, trying to draw it out as she had Kouga's. She refused to look at Sango as one thought kept pounding through her head, God, I wish I didn't have to do this....
It was strange, but as soon as that thought solidified in her mind, she felt something... shift in the jewel. Its energy no longer pulled at Kohaku's still body but rather seemed to flow into it, the pale glow of it fading from her hand as the round weight of it faded also, leaving her curled fingers empty.
--
Inuyasha didn't have time to worry about Kohaku as he deflected a series of blows aimed at the oblivious humans. He'd tried to tell Kagome to not worry about him and to use the jewel to save Kohaku, if she could, but he wasn't sure she'd understood him. Tenseiga was whispering softly in his hand, and while it didn't do as much damage against Naraku as Tetsusaiga he noticed that Naraku's blows suddenly felt... muffled. He supposed the sword was throwing up some sort of shield, but rather than thinking about it too much he was just glad for it. Miroku was beside him
suddenly, pulling the rosary from his wrist, a determined look on his face. Thrusting Tetsusaiga in the ground beside him, Inuyasha turned to grab Miroku by the arm to yell at him to not be stupid, but he caught sight of something out of the corner of his eye.
Kohaku was sitting up, kneeling now, pushing himself to his feet as he leaned against Sango.
Inuyasha blinked as he glanced between the happy tears on Sango's face and the happy shock on Kagome's. Miroku slipped away from him and Inuyasha turned his attention back to the battle with a curse.
Gathering up his swords, he took a running flying leap and landed on his brother's shoulder. Pausing to pelt Naraku's creeping limbs with a particularly strong blow, he yelled something up at Sesshomaru. Once again, he wasn't sure that the person he was talking to had understood him- but a red eye fixed on him, and Sesshomaru winked, turning immediately to disperse his deadly venom in the direction of the Saimyoushou. The hell bugs fell all around him, overcome by the
poison; Inuyasha saw Miroku glace up as he realized what was happening. The monk dove underneath Sesshomaru's body; standing between the huge dog's forelegs, he opened the kazaana,
directing it at Naraku.
Really it happened very quickly, but as he watched it seemed to last forever. Naraku's body was
pulled irrevocably toward the vacuum that the monster himself had created. Seeing his brother and the monk standing so near each other, their powers complementing to a greater purpose... it struck Inuyasha, as he clung to the thick fur of Sesshomaru's shoulder, that it really never would have occurred to Naraku that his enemies would work together so thoroughly. Hell, it hardly made sense to him, but as he dropped down from his perch Inuyasha glanced back toward Kagome to see
Kouga throwing up a shield between the humans and the noxious fumes, Sango standing beside the demon as she glanced between Miroku and Naraku, anxious to see the survival of one and the death of the latter. It was only moments before Miroku dropped to his knees, the enemy before him gone from the face of the earth; the fingers of his hand were curled shut as he breathed deep, shuddering breaths. Sango ran to him, but it was Inuyasha who, as he knelt at the monk's side, managed to pry the stiff fingers open to reveal the smooth wholeness of that hand.
Sango was crying again- Inuyasha wondered whether she'd ever really stopped in the past minutes- as she kissed that hand, and Miroku pulled her close, the pair of them falling, trembling, to the ground where they curled together and simply held each other. Kouga came over, an exhausted Kagome curled in his arms and the stumbling but wide-eyed and whole Kohaku beside him. Sesshomaru shed his demon form and Inuyasha went to his brother, tracing fingers over the pattern of thin cuts across his face and arms from where Naraku had struck as him. Taking Inuyasha's chin in his hand, Sesshomaru lifted the half-breed's face and kissed him, softly. Inuyasha leaned against his brother, turning to take in the rest of their group.
Kirara's loud roar echoed over them, and they all looked up to see her descending to land near where Sango and Miroku lay. Sango sat up, grass mussing her hair, and scowled at the firecat. "And where have you been?"
Shippou hopped down from Kirara's back, the cat crouching to let Rin slid down as well. Rin smiled at everyone.
"See?" she said to the fox kit, "I told you they were fine. Lord Sesshomaru wouldn't let anything bad happen." Secure in her certain knowledge, she went to investigate the new face, introducing
herself to Kohaku.
"Did you forget about us?!" Shippou scolded all and sundry, leveling a glare around the circle of weary warriors. "I wanted to help kill Naraku, too!"
Inuyasha snorted at him. "Don't worry kid, you didn't miss much."
Miroku raised an eyebrow at that. "Indeed." His arms tightened around Sango. "You didn't miss
anything at all. Everything begins starting now."
