Since they reunited, Kagome and Sesshoumaru tried to live the best they could in secretive bliss. Rin never suspected anything about Kagome coming over that night, she was too wrapped up in Kohaku. Her mother, thank goodness, just assumed that she had decided to stay at Rin's and never bothered to call in favor of letting Kagome call her in the morning. The lecture wasn't there, just a slight disappointment in her voice.
"Kagome, I know you are a grown woman now, but don't forget the common courtesy that I thought I taught you," her mother chided.
"I know, I'm sorry mama."
Her mother laughed. "Just don't make a habit of it!"
The fun really began when Rin came into the kitchen next morning to see Kagome wearing a pair of her father's sweats and Tokyo shirt cooking eggs.
"Kagome-chan?" she asked, eyes wide and trying to push Kohaku around the corner so he wouldn't be seen.
Kagome looked up and smiled. "Morning Rin. Morning Kohaku."
Neither Rin nor Kohaku were able to contain their blush. "When did you get here, Kagome?"
"Last night right about the time you and Kohaku headed for your bedroom." She didn't think the blushes could get any redder but she was quite mistaken. Both teenagers at the table looked like they were ready to sink under the table and hide there for the next few years. "Don't worry, I didn't mention anything to your dad." Because we were in his room doing the same thing.
Rin sighed in relief. "Thanks a lot Kagome. What are you doing here?" She sat down at the table.
"I can't come visit my best friend?" Kagome asked with an eyebrow raised. "Egg?"
"Yes, please," Rin replied. She thought about how she wanted to word her next thought. Not that 'what are you doing here and why the hell are you wearing my dad's clothes' did cover the thought, but she didn't exactly want to come off hostile. "So what are you doing here so early? Did you spend the night?"
Kagome nodded. "I crashed on the couch. I had to get out of my house, I've been hiding for the past week." She dumped the fried egg out of the pan onto a plate and sat it in front of Rin. "You were so busy with Kohaku I didn't want to disturb you," she said with a wink. "Your dad gave me some clothes and told me it was alright if I crashed on the couch. You want an egg, Kohaku?" When the boy shook his head she set to making breakfast for Sesshoumaru and herself. "So, did you use protection?" She couldn't stop the laughter that bubbled when Rin choked on a bite of her eggs.
"Excuse me?" she asked when she could speak again.
"I believe she asked if you used protection?" came a voice from the doorway.
"Daddy!" Rin squealed, turning red with embarrassment.
He came and kissed her on the top of her head. "It's a valid question. I'm not stupid, you know. I heard you." Sesshoumaru walked up to Kagome and shooed her away from the stove so he could finish cooking.
Kagome wished she had a camera. The look of fear on Kohaku's face was priceless.
"Don't worry, boy. You both are grown and are fully capable of handling the consequences if something happens." Sesshoumaru halved the omelet in the pan into two plates and carried them to the table, taking a seat next to Kagome. "Have you received any word on your college applications Rin?"
"I got a letter from Kyoto U, but I am too terrified to open it," she said with a small smile.
Kagome grinned. "Go get it! I'm curious!"
Sesshoumaru nodded. "As am I."
The other girl stood and left the table for a moment. There were sounds of shuffling from her room before she returned with an envelope in her hand. "I'm scared, dad."
"What is the worst it could say?"
"That I'm not accepted."
"With your grades, I doubt that you have anything to worry about," her best friend said in an attempt to ease her nerves.
Rin handed the envelope over to Kagome. "You open it, I'm too nervous."
Taking her sweet time with the envelope Kagome watched as Rin began to fidget in her seat, a slight sweat breaking out on her forehead.
"Hurry up!" the girl yelled.
Kagome laughed and ripped the envelope open and began to read. "Dear Ms. Kouinu, we thank you.."
"Kagome!" Rin squealed.
"Impatient, impatient! Do you want to hear this or not?" Kagome scolded her.
"Get to the good stuff!"
Kagome grinned. "You're in."
Rin's face blanched for a moment before she jumped up. "I got in. I got in!" She jumped up and down before launching herself at her father. "I did it, daddy! I did it!"
A rare laugh rumbled from Sesshoumaru's chest. "That you did, baby." He stood up and swung her around in a circle. "You and Kohaku go celebrate tonight. I will give you one of my credit cards so you can go out to dinner and stay in a hotel if you would like. You deserve it."
Rin squealed one more time before giving her father a kiss on the cheek. "Thanks dad. You're the best!" She left the kitchen in a near run so she could get ready for the day. Kohaku sat awkwardly at the table for a few minutes before heading in the same direction that Rin did.
Sesshoumaru sat back down at the table next to Kagome, who was finishing off the plate of eggs in front of her. "Have you gotten any word from the schools you applied to?" he asked quietly.
"None yet," she said shaking her head. "What will we do if I am accepted to NYU?"
He shrugged his shoulders. "Make the best of the time we have together, visit on holidays. I do have the occasional business trip to New York though lately I've been turning them down in favor of spending my time with you."
"Hopefully I'll get word from Tokyo U before I make any drastic decisions."
"Hopefully."
She finished her eggs and took the empty plates from the table to the sink and washed them. "I don't want this to end. I'll skip school if it means staying with you!" She turned around to face him with tears running down her cheeks. "To hell with school!"
Sesshoumaru approached her carefully and pulled her into his arms. "If you do not attend school you will be missing a lot of great life experiences. I don't want to hold you down. Go to school, graduate, find a great job. I can't just keep you locked away here."
"I can cook! I can clean! I'll even have kids!" She tucked herself into his chest and took in his scent. It always seemed to bring her comfort.
"I know, kitten. Take my word on this one. Go to school and we will work things out from there. After Rin is away in Kyoto I'm sure my father would give me the time off for me to fly half way around the world even if it meant seeing you for five minutes." He rubbed her back while she cried softly into his chest. "Go back to the bedroom, sleep for a few hours. While Rin and Kohaku are out tonight will be just for us."
Kagome pulled back and gave him a light kiss before she left the kitchen. She passed Kohaku in the hall and smiled at him as she walked into Sesshoumaru's bedroom.
Sesshoumaru looked up when he heard footsteps coming into the kitchen. "What are your plans, Kohaku?" he asked, using the father tone that he had learned from his own father.
"I plan to go to the same school as Rin. I didn't know she had applied there until she mentioned the acceptance letter," he said nervously. So far the older man had been amazingly accepting of him and his daughter's relationship, more so than he could have ever dreamed of. How many father's wouldn't beat the crap out of you the next morning when they knew full well what you were doing to their daughter in her bedroom the night before?
"Just how much do you care for my daughter?" Sesshoumaru poured himself a cup of coffee and sat down at the table across from the boy.
"Honestly," he replied.
"Honesty," Sesshoumaru confirmed.
"About as much as you care for Kagome," Kohaku said with confidence.
"Excuse me?"
"I know, sir. I think nearly everyone knows. Except for Rin. You two aren't being very sneaky anymore."
"As all good things, it seems that this will be coming to an end," he said with an air of bitterness.
"Do you love her?"
"I would die for her," he said quietly. "Ever since Rin was born I've bent over backwards to make sure that she would be taken care of. She's grown into a delightful young woman with a great head on her shoulders. Now she is old enough to be on her own; hell, she will be in a few months. Being with Kagome is something that I've done for myself. She makes me happy. I love her with my entire being."
Kohaku laughed. "Are you sure you aren't just having a midlife crisis or something?"
"I am only thirty six. I don't plan for the midlife crisis for at least four more years." Sesshoumaru rolled his eyes at the boy, an action that was totally unheard of for him. "You will speak nothing of this to Rin, understand?"
"When will you tell her? Are you going to let her find out through wedding invitations or something?"
"Mind your own boy. I'm already angry that you spent the night here last night in my daughter's room, I just covered it for her sake. Don't press it." Sesshoumaru stood up and took his cup to the sink. "I will tell her when I feel the time is right." Sparing Kohaku one last glance he left the kitchen.
-----
It was around noon when Kagome woke up again. Sesshoumaru was next to her asleep, Rin and Kohaku were out celebrating. She curled up into Sesshoumaru's side in an attempt to go back to sleep but the cordless phone on the night table began to ring and Sesshoumaru didn't look like he was going to wake up any time soon so she shook him. "Sess, the phone." He didn't stir so she shook him again, only a bit harder. "Sess, the phone!"
His golden eyes finally cracked open and he reached blindly for the phone. After fumbling a few times he managed to press the 'talk' button. "'llo," he mumbled. "Ok." He passed the phone to Kagome. "It's for you."
Kagome took the phone from him wearily. "Hello?"
"Oh, hello dear!" Her mother's cheerful voice came from the other end of the phone. "Please apologize to Mr. Kouinu for waking him."
"No problem, mom. We were watching a movie and he fell asleep. I swear he falls asleep in the strangest positions sometimes," she giggled.
"He is quite the tall man, Kagome. Not everyone can curl up into a little ball and sleep like you can!" Her mother's laughter always made Kagome's day brighter. "You got a letter today."
"I did?" She shook Sesshoumaru again and gave him a look that told him that he needed to be awake for this. "From who?"
"NYU."
"NYU," Kagome whispered. This moment could make or break everything that had been happening for the past year. "Open it."
"Are you sure?"
"Please, open it." Kagome heard her mother tearing at the envelope and then there was silence. "Mama?" she asked. "Mama, are you still there?"
"You did it," her mother said in a hushed tone.
"What?"
"You're in! You were accepted to NYU!" her mother cried. "I can't believe it!"
"I...got...in....I GOT IN!!" Kagome squealed!
At Kagome's squealing Sesshoumaru was totally awake. His eyes widened when he heard what she said. "Congrats kitten," he said with a grin on his face. He always knew that she would get in, no matter how much she put herself down.
"Alright, mama. I'll be home later this evening so we can celebrate as a family." She pulled the phone from her ear and pressed the 'talk' button to end the call. "I can't believe it," she mumbled. "I really can't believe I got in."
Sesshoumaru smiled at her, the smile that he reserved for her and her alone. "I had faith in you. What do you say we celebrate?" he asked, a wicked gleam in his eye.
"I say that I could definitely go for some celebration right now," she replied.
