Chapter 10 – Stand Unafraid all the Good Souls
Kagome lifted her head from the pillow as her eyes cracked open. The room was dimly lit but light poured in from the gaps between the blinds. With a small grunt she rolled onto her back and stared at the ceiling fan as it turned slowly. The hum of the turning blades was the little noise she heard, until her ears twitched slightly…Inuyasha was awake. The creak of the door alerted Inuyasha to her presence as he turned a page slowly to a motorcycle magazine. She wore shorts, but always, a long t-shirt meant to forever hide the scars. “Keh, good morning, sunshine,” he smirked, noting it was past noon. She groans and pulls open the refrigerator to pull out a gallon of orange juice. “What are you doing today?” Kagome poured a cup and looked to him, her short hair still flaring in different directions from bed head. “Hojo-sama wants me to come in for a small shift today. No tours, just questions and help.” She took a sip and turned away, “You?” He flipped another page and looked up, “Night shift at the café.” There was a yawn she tried to stifle but it echoed in the kitchen, her fangs, new thanks to his blood, glistened in kitchen light. He couldn’t help but stare; Kagome’s changes were subtle, but because it was his blood, he could see them. There was something that stirred in him, not just guilt, but also a slight joy, seeing her change. She’d only been here three weeks, but he enjoyed the company. She leaned over the counter and flipped the page he looked at, pulling him from his staring. “I’ll stop by after work then to see you?” It was more a comment than a question; Kagome was never really allowed to go anywhere without his protection, or Sango’s. He still had not fully explained his demon powers to her, nor had he exposed his ears, but Kagome knew she was bonded to him, whether she trusted him entirely or not. He nodded and she flicked his nose. “Hey! Watch it!” he scowled and rubbed his nose, trying to not blush as she bunked her head against his, “What do you want? Yes, you can come visit me at work, keh. Now make me some lunch, woman!” Kagome scowled but opened the cabinet and pulled out a pack of instant ramen. Very quickly Kagome had learned that Inuyasha had his comfort zone and didn’t open himself to much change. She boiled water for his ramen while she put a piece of bread into the toaster. “Oye, eat more than toast for lunch, alright?” Inuyasha barked, getting up from his chair. He was in a pair of sweats and a ripped up t-shirt. “Call me when the ramen’s ready.” He got all the way to his door before looking over his shoulder, watching her pull an apple out of the fridge and stared at it. He smirked lightly and closed his own door. Once his door was shut he flopped onto his bed and flipped open his phone. Contact: Sango Text: Toast and an apple. He waited until a few minutes later his phone buzzed on his chest. From: Sango Text: Thanks. Good to see she’s eating more. And sleep? He listened through the wall and heard her curse as she poured the hot water. He smirked. Contact: Sango Text: She got through most of the night, needed the pills though. There wasn’t a respond after that, but he was sure Sango was just concerned and thinking. It was her job to walk Kagome to work today he assumed, since Inuyasha didn’t have to work until later tonight. “Inuyasha.” “Hey, how are you?” he cradled the phone to his ear and smirked. “Fine. And you?” “Eh, it’s good. Got work at the café later tonight. Are you free today?” “No. I’m at the lab today.” He growled and rolled over, “Again? Kikyou this is the third weekend in a row you’re at the lab!” “My research is important Inuyasha.” He whimpered, “Am I not important to you?” There was a pause on her end and then a sigh. “I’ll take my dinner break at the café, okay?” Inuyasha smiled but was interrupted when there was a knock at the door. “Great! I gotta run though. I can’t wait to see you.” He hung up and threw his door open to find Kagome, with her toast in her mouth, and his soup in her hands. “Keh, you delivered it?” When her hands were free she removed the toast and rested against the doorframe, “Your door was shut….I didn’t know how long you’d be….” Inuyasha’s beast chastised him. Kagome clearly felt unsettled in her new home and wanted to make the alpha happy. Even if Kagome did not realize it, the blood wanted her unconsciously to please him. Inuyasha slurped the soup and flicked her forehead, “Thanks.” She gave a small smile before taking another bite of her toast. “I gotta go shower before work, so don’t grab the bathroom alright?” With that she turned quickly and shuffled to her room. - - - - - After a quick shower Kagome knocked on her neighbor’s door before just pushing it open, “Sango-chan? Ready to go?” Sango emerged from her room with a bag slung over her shoulder. Kagome’s friend had done a lot of growing in the past three weeks; she’d gotten her own job for the summer and kept herself busy, while still supportive for the recovering girl. Now that the semester was over for the two of them, there were less classes to attend and a lot more free time. “Sorry, I’m ready. Had to grab my uniform.” “Oh right, your job at WacDonalds?” Kagome grinned, nudging her friend’s side. “Oh come on, I’m a waitress. It’s way better than fast food!” Sango stuck out her tongue as she pushed her friend out of the room. “Now you tell me, how is it going?” Kagome shrugged, “It’s only a few shifts at a time. They want me to rest more than anything during the break so I can be entirely better for fall semester.” “And your grades?” They began the climb down the flights of stairs, since Kaede-chan refused to fix the elevator still, “Thanks to you and Inuyasha-san, I managed to get through four of the five.” “And the last one?” “My art teacher re-enrolled me into her summer session of the same course, so right now it’s an incomplete and not an E, so it didn’t effect my current grade point average. She wants me to restart the portfolio, post-injury.” Kagome touched her left shoulder blade lightly before pushing open the door of the apartment complex. “It’s a slow process…” “But you are creating though, right?” Kagome bit her lip and looked ahead of her has they walked down the street, “It’s not that easy, Sango-chan. I can’t flip a switch and draw something.” Sango nodded and tried to understand. This is where Kagome and Sango were too different. Sometimes it felt like Kagome’s art mattered more to her than her Japanese history degree. It concerned Sango. What would Kagome do for a living in a year after they’d graduated? But she was trying to be supportive for Kagome, who had been through so much. “I’m sorry, Kagome-chan. There must be a lot of pressure on you to finish this portfolio. How many pieces do they want?” “Twelve, one of which must be the center piece. It goes to gallery afterwards for the faculty and public to evaluate.” She sighed and ran a hand through her short hair, still getting used to the lightness. “How is Miroku-kun?” “He swears he has the New Yorker American accent down, but he’s still the same guy to me. He’s glad his program is for the whole summer, for him the four months help him make the best connections. ” Kagome chuckled and rubbed her friend’s shoulder, “I’m sure he misses you everyday. I’m sure you guys skype all the time. Does he make kissy faces at you?” She squished her lips together to emphasize her point. Sango wacked Kagome back and stuck out her tongue. “He’s more faithful than I ever realized.” There was a silence between them, this feeling that Kagome was missing out. Sango wanted to tell Kagome that one day she’d know what an amazing guy was like, but she couldn’t bear to open her mouth. There was a name that could not be spoken. He had not been heard from since the night of her attack, a night she still had yet to tell anyone about. More boxes of Kagome’s clothing did arrive, but to everyone’s surprise there were no torrents of tears, instead, just her silence as she cradled the boxes with care, trying to catch the last lingers of his scent. From Sango’s position, in the silence, Kagome’s face tensed, as did the muscles in her neck. Although she looked straight ahead, with her head high, Sango could feel a part of Kagome’s soul crying out in pain. Sango took her friend’s hand and squeezed it gently, “He says he misses you. You should skype with him and let him do his Al Pacino impression. It’s pretty terrible.” “I’m sure it is. I don’t think Miroku-kun could be anyone but himself.” “That’s right,” Sango smiled and opened the door to the museum. “Away you go, yeah? You better hurry and get in that uniform or you will be late.” Kagome gave one last wave to Sango before jumping inside. --- It was Kagome’s break and she sat in front of the sword Tessaiga, a sandwich resting in her lap. There hadn’t been too many questions today, but it was summertime now and students would rather spend their vacation at the beach more than in a museum. She tried to get through her lunch, but it wasn’t uncommon she couldn’t get through meals. “Tessaiga.” Kagome lifted her head to find a tall gentleman gazing from afar at the sword. While not on duty, Kagome couldn’t help but nod and smile, “It was a legendary warrior’s sword, it was said to be used to wielded to protect humans.” “Hn. Humans.” The man had a long silver braid that passed to the small of his back. He wore a corporate suit, grey with thin white stripes, with a pair of sunglasses tucked into his collar. Kagome was surprised at how tall he was, easily approaching the six foot marker, which was uncommon for Japan. “I think it’s noble that someone would protect others who are weaker,” Kagome added carefully, tearing a piece of her sandwich. “Those that are weak die out, it is part of evolution,” the man bit back. He was at the next display over, staring at other older relics. “It is surprising that humans survived this long.” Kagome put down her sandwich and growled lightly, “The will to survive often overpowers those who take their life for granted.” He looked back to her finally, exposing his creamy pale face to her. Expressionless, that was what Kagome thought of as she studied his face. His golden eyes sparkled at her with a slight amusement. “Is will power really enough? Is that what humans rely on?” Kagome stood slowly and growled. It was only after she stood she felt it, the pulse. Her whole body reacted to what felt like a heartbeat in the air, a thump. It was a feeling Kagome had only begun to notice after her hospital visit. “Will power is not all we have. You should not underestimate people. I’m sure humans were very different in the ancient past but still.” The man tilted his head and smirked, “So you can feel the pulse? Fascinating.” He took a few steps towards her, “You’re not a simple human then, are you?” Kagome gulped and cast her eyes down, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” The pulses grew more frequent and Kagome held the side of her head, “What do you mean pulse?” “The weak should not play dumb to their situation,” he growled, tilting her chin up towards him. Her eyes were bleeding red. The man with the golden eyes grinned a little bolder. “I see… the control here is incomplete.” “She’s a stubborn one, this girl,” Kagome barked, her voice rumbling in a lower tone. “The traces of the priestess runs strong in this being.” The man leaned forward and took a sniffed the side of her neck, “You could be quite strong.” “And what could a man like you tell me of such things? You’d cast me off instantly just knowing the human blood in me,” she snapped back, turning her head away, exposing her neck, but growling louder. Her eyes were red and her fangs were flared. “What do you want?” “There is a relic that could help your weak situation,” the man purred, enjoying her resistance and feisty behavior. “It can help separate you two, within the same vessel, letting you willingly sleep between the two.” Her eyes slanted in a glare, “A relic? And let me guess that you are in possession of this artifact?” “Hm.” The man pulled away from her slowly and turned to look around the museum, “You catch on fast, little onna.” She knowingly growled like a dog backed into the corner, “Do you gain amusement giving me false hope? I am trapped with this girl but I do not need your useless pity from some fool of a man.” In a flash she was thrown against the wall beside Tessaiga’s display. His smoldering golden eyes flickered specks of red as he pressed against her. From just his pressure Kagome could feel the strength of a toned body, heat radiating from his tall frame. “This fool could end you as quickly as I please, you should know your place,” he growled, his hips knocking into hers as his strong claws pinned her wrists to the walls. Kagome looked down at his hands and smirked, “Ah, a demon in hiding I see.” Her breathing was labored with the sudden forced intimacy with this man. Her chest heaved with a swirl of arousal in the air, “So tell me, how should I get this relic from the man who can end my life?” He listened to her hiss with delight as he pressed against her harder. The demon man could smell the spike in her arousal as he deliberately alerted her to his strong frame. He tucked his face in close to hers again and let his tongue run along the side of her neck, listening to her voice hitch as he found her pulse. “We will just have to wait and see.” Kagome smirked, “Does the man have a name?” There was a pause as he pulled his face back to stare at hers one last time, the golden returned to his eyes as her own eyes continued to dance a crazy red. “Sesshomaru-sama.” “Perfect killing, nice name,” she huffed with a smirk. “Learn to conceal your aura, onna. It dances like a wild flame when your person is angry. It will prove to be your downfall and bring unnecessary danger.” And with that he was gone. Kagome slipped and hit the ground below. “Hey! What about the relic!” She stood quickly and searched but sensed nothing remaining of the pulse. The girl sat down and picked back up the sandwich just in time for the blue to return in her eyes. ----- The bells to the café chimed and Nana looked up from the counter. “Good evening, thank you for coming!” Today Nana’s hair was a bright blue with streaks of blond in it, but her attire was summer appropriate in a black tank top and a pair of white city slacks. Kikyou approached the counter with her usual cold expression and nodded politely. It was hard for Nana to force her smile to stay up. “What can I get you today?” “Is Inuyasha-san here?” she asked coolly, eyes scanning the room. Nana bit back and sigh, “He’s in the back grinding more beans for us to prepare for tomorrow. He’ll be at once he’s done. Is there anything I can get you in the meantime?” Kikyou opened her purse and pulled out a ten, “Just a small green tea.” After receiving her change she sat at the yellow sofa that was normally occupied by Kagome-chan. Nana bit her lip and disappeared into the back. Inuyasha was sitting in the back fanning his neck with a rolled newspaper, his bandana off, groaning, “It’s so freaking hot today.” Nana sighed and kicked Inuyasha’s side as he waited for the beans, “Your lady is outside.” Inuyasha looked up and flicked his ears, “Kagome-chan’s here? She’s a little early…” “I mean Kikyou-san. She’s on the yellow couch and ordered a green tea.” He rose and dusted his pants off, “You think she could be a bit more friendly considering she’s been coming here so long. Inuyasha sighed, “Could you cut the crap tonight? I’m already tired and grumpy enough.” “Does Kikyou-san even know Kagome-chan is living with you?” That had Inuyasha stopping at the door, looking back over his shoulder at her. “I’m going to guess that’s a no. It’s been three weeks already, Taishou-san! How much longer do you plan on playing this game with them?” “I’m just helping my friends by giving her a place to stay. I’m the one who did this to her.” His eyes downcast to the floor, “Look, I ain’t hurting Kagome-chan by having a girlfriend.” Nana ran her hand over her face, “Who are you kidding here? Okay, maybe Kagome-chan will understand, but will your ice princess out there?” She pulled the door open for Inuyasha and kept her voice low, “Haven’t they already met and fought before? Wasn’t that the whole reason before her accident that you two weren’t speaking?” “Alright! Alright! I hear you, crazy lady,” Inuyasha growled, storming through the door. “But I’ll do this my own way. Not yours.” He eased her teacup down in front of her, Kikyou tapping away on her blackberry phone. “Good evening, Inuyasha-san.” “How long do you have here?” he asked softly, sitting down on the couch beside her. “A little more than half an hour.” He scratched his head over his bandana, “You’re never free.” “We’re close to a breakthrough concerning the demon saliva.” She picked up the tea and took a sip, “Our time is precious.” “Have you been eating and resting though?” “I’m not a hospital patient, Inuyasha. I can take care of myself just fine.” Kikyou countered coolly, taking another sip of her drink. “You’ve been quiet about yourself lately. Tell me what has you so preoccupied.” Inuyasha swallowed and looked around the café, “Well now that classes are out I’m here most of the time.” “And that’s all?” He shook his head, “I get calls from my damn brother about working for the company in the summer, so I can learn about the business I’m inheriting and neglecting.” Kikyou tilted her head and sipped at her tea, “Why don’t you? It’s a prosperous business offer.” “Kikyou, you know I hate him. Come on. Don’t be my mother.” She sighed and put down the empty cup, “You constantly complain about meeting rent, I just figured it would help to work another job if you had the free time. I’m sorry.’ Inuyasha sighed and ran his hand over his face, “Keh, it’s this damn heat, makes me all on edge.” He picked up her hand and held it gently; “I would rather just spend some time with you rather than cooped up in an office with my arrogant big brother.” “I understand.” Just as it seemed the ice queen was going to lean in to kiss Inuyasha her phone let off a loud ring. Inuyasha cursed as she pulled away and flipped it open. “This is Kikyou.” Inuyasha was already standing. He knew this meant she would leave. No sooner than he had cleared her teacup and saucer she was picking up her bag. She shuffled to the counter and kissed him on the cheek and quickly ran out the door, just in time as Kagome was pulling it open. The two of them exchanged gazes as Kikyou pushed past without saying a word. Kagome watched her leave before slowly before pushing inside. Nana smiled from the counter and waved her over. “Kagome-chan, you’re looking well.” She smiled and nodded, “Thank you. Inuyasha-san told me you were there during my accident. I’ve never had a real chance to properly thank you.” Kagome bowed low and looked up when Nana-chan laughed. “Kagome-chan, what kind of owner would I be if I let you die on my property?” Nana began mixing together Kagome’s new favorite drink, an iced mocha. “I like your hair short, but it’s nice to see it growing in a little bit.” Kagome smiled and ruffled her hair. After the hospital she’d gotten it properly styled with Tomoe’s advice on a great salon. She was in a red shoulder-capped button down shirt and blue jeans. “How is the place handling the heat?” “Just means a shift from hot drinks to cold ones, we go through ice like air,” Nana smiled as she turned on the espresso machine. “He’s on the couch, if you’re wondering.” Kagome looked over her shoulder and gazed at his back. Even from here, she could tell he seemed a little down. “Is he down because Kikyou-san left?” Nana shrugged and started pouring in the cold milk into Kagome’s drink, “The woman is always on the go for her ‘research’. I wish she hadn’t come back.” Kagome looked back at her, “Come back? What do you mean?” Nana shook her head and waved her free arm as she handed Kagome her drink. “Just drama. Not my place to say. This one’s on me, it’s good to see you back here. Consider it the welcome back drink.” Kagome waved and trotted over to Inuyasha, leaning over with her free arm to cover his eyes. She felt him flinch, but then relax in her arm hold. “Keh, what do you want?” She pressed her cold drink against his neck and he hissed, “Damnit, that’s cold.” “So it will cool you off, you grump,” she chuckled, jumping over the couch to sit beside him. She took a sip of her drink as he stretched out and turned to look at her. “How was your shift today?” Kagome looked down at her drink and fiddled with the straw. “It was fine…” He tilted his head and leaned over, taking a sip of her drink without permission, ignoring her “HEY” protest. “You don’t seem fine. Did something happen?” Kagome rubbed the back of her head, “I feel like I don’t remember a part of my day.” “Did you daydream again?” he teased, attempting to snatch more of her drink but she yanked it away, taking a long sip. “You do daydream a lot.” Kagome shook her head, “No it wasn’t like that. I was eating my lunch and then when I looked up again, my hour break had passed. But it just, I don’t remember dreaming anything else. I just remember it going dark.” She sighed and took another sip of her drink. Inuyasha studied her closely, “You think it’s got to do with the blood?’ Although Kagome had lived with him for three weeks now he didn’t want to tell her about his demon side. He was afraid she’d leave. The girl had barely gotten used to him walking around in his boxers. Plus, he liked having her around when Kikyou was gone. Kagome nodded. “Sometimes I don’t recognize myself in the mirror.” She shifted in her seat and looked at him, “I like the yellow bandana. Suits you, matches your bright and shining personality.” “Keh, watch it. Don’t forget I live with you. I’m going to lay snakes in your bed!” Kagome stuck out her tongue. “I saw Kikyou-san on the way out.” “Yeah, the girl is always on her way out, it seems.” Inuyasha looked out the window and for a minute, thought of the past when the two used to spend so much time together. They had met through Sesshomaru, not that anyone would admit to it. Still, the window reminded him of Kagome too, when he had found her that night. “You kind of get used to it, I suppose.” Kagome frowned and nudged his side, “Do you work at all, or you going to be a slacker and sit here with me all night?” Inuyasha scowled and stood up, “I do too work! Just you wait!” He pointed at her, “You just wait here for my shift to be done, alright? Then we’ll go home and have late dinner.” “You mean ramen?” “Damn right I mean ramen!” “Inuyasha-san, we need to have a salad with that ramen or my eyeballs are going to turn to noodle.” Inuyasha shooed her away as he headed for the counter, but inwardly smiled. If she wanted salad, at least it meant she was hungry. “I think she succeeded in cheering you up,” Nana hummed as she cleaned down a counter. “Before you were so depressed over Kikyou leaving you so early.” Inuyasha just let out a “keh” and started to serve a new customer, but Nana did notice the small smirk on his face stayed through the rest of his shift. He’d occasionally look up to check on her at the couch, her hands hard at work with a new sketch for the portfolio. He tried not to worry about her almost amnesia like instances, but it still lingered in the back of his head. He’d have to ask his beast about it when they had a proper time to chat. He hoped it was nothing serious.
