The chirp of evening crickets lulled her from sleep. Wiping her eyes,
Rin sat up to the smell of late afternoon wind. Before she could let out a
yawn at the darkening sky, she paused, blinking the fuzziness away.
There, sitting only a few feet away, staring out across the pond and to the
horizon, was the inu youkai, dressed in a billowing white robe like the
one he had worn before. There were glints of dying sunlight in
his eyes. His long silver hair seemed to be trying to catch that fading
evening glow too as it flowed to the ground, nearly covering his broad
shoulders as well as the green grass. He didn't look at her or say anything.

Rin pulled her small sandaled feet to the side, almost under her bottom, the
movement rustling the cooling blades of grass. She thought the simple motion
might cause some kind of reaction from him. It didn't. She looked away to the
sky, seeing the first star's glittering birth. It made her a little sad.

"Do you still fear me?"

His deep voice startled her. She blinked back to find him
still watching the sky, that first star's light being born in that dark
amber. Rin wanted to answer him but couldn't seem to make herself speak.

He dropped his gaze to the wind blown pond before them. "You are mine
now. That cannot change. Do you wish...? What do you wish?"

A cool wind slipped around them. Rin could smell him on that delicate
breeze, a sweetish yet male musky scent. She found her voice. "I... don't
know." The answer was a struggle so she decided to answer his first question
instead. "I don't think I'm scared of you...anymore." The last word
left like a whisper on her lips.

His chest rose and fell in what seemed like a sigh. Those now dark gold
eyes turned to gently settle on her, and Rin felt something in her chest thump.
For a long moment, she was caught, frozen, by that unexplainable feeling.

She felt her lips part in another answer, but just as she was about
to speak, that sweet gentle breeze began to get stronger. It became harsh
and solid, lashing against her body and his. Through the stinging gust, Rin
saw him move quickly. In a second, he was standing close, blocking her view
of the house. A sudden fear caught in her gut. What if...What if it was another
demon like the thunder brothers, come to hurt them? She stood on now shaky
legs but dared not move away from Sesshoumaru.

"Yo."

The wind died some as a light red glow outlined the dog demon in front
of her. Several moments passed in a strange silence. Afraid but wondering,
Rin peeked around Sesshoumaru's sleeve. Her bottom lip dropped at the
most amazingly beautiful female demon she had ever seen. Long silky black hair
framed her perfectly shaped face. Her eyes were an incredible ruby red. Her
lips were a full darker red. In one hand, she held a white fan dotted with
blue flowers, the same color blue as her pretty and slightly revealing dress.
It hugged her so close, accentuating all her curves. She pulled back a lock
of that silky black hair, showing off her pointy ear and diamond studded
dangling earrings.

"Dear Sesshoumaru. I have come on behalf of the arrangement made by our
two families. Your father and my father have come to the agreement that we
should be mated. I have come, myself, to complete the deal and sign it in
blood."

Rin looked up at the dog demon by her side. He showed no expression but...
she could see a different gleam in his eyes, deep and...hidden to everyone
else.

"As I have said to my father, Kagura. I do not wish to mate with you.
I have already chosen." Sesshoumaru's reply was flat and dry.

That ruby red gaze fixed on her. Rin shrank some, closer to Sesshoumaru.
Irritation glinted in the wind demon's face, making Rin tremble at the
all too familiar expression.

"So...this little human girl is now your mate? What kind of joke is this?
You are royalty. I am the queen of the wind. We have been arranged. Do you
not wish for a royal bloodline?" There was a slight edge to Kagura's voice.

"I do not wish for any bloodline. What I do with the one I have chosen
is my affair. By the arrangement, I have taken a mate before the date of
my birth so the agreement is null and void." Sesshoumaru replied.

Then an eerie thing happened: Kagura smiled. "You must have an heir.
If you do not provide that heir to your father's line within the time given,
then the mating arrangement will be unfulfilled. You will have no choice." She
stepped closer, sweet scented wind surrounded them. Still smiling, the
wind demon looked up to him. "I want you, Sesshoumaru, unlike the quivering
human female at your side. I want all of you. I will return...." She backed
away, her eyes fixed on him till she began to rise. "....when you need me
most."

When Kagura was out of sight, Sesshoumaru began walking to the house.
Rin followed after, closely, glancing up and around behind them, till they
were safely inside. Sesshoumaru went silently into the hallway. Rin paused,
staring after him, now feeling the large house all around. She rubbed her
arms, trying to warm the fear away. Not wanting to be alone, Rin went to find
him. Catching a glimpse of white going up the stairs, she moved quickly
down the hall and up the stairs to find his open doorway. The bathroom light
was on, giving the room some light. She stopped in the doorway, seeing him
at the window, looking out. Rin noticed the old bed was gone, now replaced
by one much larger and more beautiful. Looking at it, she remembered him
lying there, dying.

She knew it was stupid to feel this way but demons scared her and Kagura
had given her a new kind of fear. She so wanted to not be alone right
then. "Can I sit by your bed tonight?"

The moment she asked, Rin saw his head turn.

"Why?" He spoke deep and low.

"I'm scared."

"She will not harm you. She cannot. It is our law. There is no need
for your fear." He affirmed.

Rin didn't care. It would be just for awhile till the feeling went away.
"Can I?"

"Do as you wish."

Rin went to the bed and sat down beside it.

Soon, the darkness of sleep came.
