AN I have updated a lot in the last few days. Just a warning incase you skipped to the last chapter and don’t understand what going on. Chapter 7-10 are new this week.
Thank you Viperbytes for the reviews. You are so great at leaving them. I know I speak for a lot of writers when I say how important it is to us newbies. It’s so hard to get people to comment. Thank you!
“Okay. I promise.” She smiles warily, jumps onto Ah-Un’s back and gives me a nervous wave good-bye.
Wow, she really thinks I might says something to get myself killed. I turn back to Sesshomaru, now standing, watching me. Hmmm, I hope she’s not right.
“Well, where shall we begin?” Sesshomaru says nothing, merely steps to the side and points to a tree at the edge on the clearing.
Hanging from the tree is a red apple, dangling by a piece of string. Taking the hint, I pull out an arrow, notch it on the bow string and pull back. Breathing calmly, I pull back and release. The arrow soars through the air, whizzing past the fruit and implanting in the trunk.
“Damn. Wait, I should’ve practiced first. I can do this. I can.” Blushing, I pull out another arrow and notch it.
Sighing deeply, I pull back. He’s watching me, and his pissed. I shake off the unpleasant vibes coming from him and focus on the task at hand.
Feeling the weight of the bow, relaxing my grip on the leather wrapped handle, I try to connect with my weapon. Smoothly moving my fingers away, the string snaps forward and the arrow takes off. Flying straight and true it strikes the apple mid center. Victory, a dead apple!
Sesshomaru seems less then impressed. He walks past me and motions for me to follow. He adds another twenty feet to the shot before turning around.
“From here.” I nod and once again go through the motions, breathing calmly as I once again send an arrow through the abused fruit. I am so glad I made archery my elective at school, and that I poured all my extra time into it. And to think, that time could have been wasted on having a social life.
Sesshomaru nods approvingly. “How are you on moving targets?”
“I do alright.” Of course we practiced on moving target, but nothing alive, in school. I actually haven’t shot at anything living since I made that faithful shot at Naraku.
“Alright? Let us test that.” I yelp as he wraps a strong arm around my waist and we take flight.
I cling on to his armor as we fly though the air. This is so much different than riding with Inuyasha. Inuyasha would jump and slice through the air with force. With Sesshomaru it feels like I’m floating with the wind. Floating while holding on to metal armor spikes, but floating all the same.
We land on a large tree branch over-looking another small clearing. Below us is a heard of deer, causally grazing. They are unaware of us, must have landed down wind.
“If they run, can you strike one?” I nod. I’m sure I can hit at least one if they flee.
“Can you kill it?”
“Kill it? I’m not sure. I never had the hit anything vital on an animal before. Just striking a demon is enough to purify it. Didn’t matter where. I’m not sure that I can.”
“Hmmm.” He eyes the deer, quietly eating minding their own business, and points out a young buck. “Strike that one in the neck when I signal you.”
“What? I have to hit that one? No way I can follow one deer. They’re going to scramble.”
“Yes, prey always does. That one, understand.”
“Yes...” He pulls me in close, wrapping an arm around my shoulder, waiting for the right moment.
I bite my tongue and try not to think about it. Being wrap in strong arms should be comforting, but it’s not. I can barely manage not to wiggling away and run. I nervously nibble on my lower lip, and breath hitches in my throat. I hope he doesn’t notice my apprehensiveness, but judging by the annoyed look his giving me, I can tell he does. I almost think he’s going to say something, but he shakes his bowed head like a disappointed father.
“Sorry,” I mumble. No point in hiding it.
I don’t get a response as we spring from the tree. The deer pop their heads up as we sail over them and land on a branch up wind. That’s when their alarms go off and they take flight.
They scatter, running in each and every direction, rushing towards the cover of the trees. Sesshomaru releases me and I struggle to string my arrow and watch my target. The young buck darts across the field, left then right, jumping over a down tree, heading toward the forest. I hold my breath, watching as he dunks down, readying for one last leap towards safety. I pull back and release.
“Hit the target,” I plead to the gods. Closing my eyes tightly while the arrow flies through the air, I can’t watch.
The clearing goes quiet as the deer disappear. I slowly peek out my left eye to see the young buck lying on the ground.
“I got it?” I really did. I got the right one. I don’t feel as guilt free about killing a deer compared to murdering the apple, but it still feels pretty great.
“I got it Sesshomaru!” I smile happily, as he reaches around me and lowers us to the ground.
I run to the deer, and my heart sinks at the sight. It’s still alive. Laying on it’s side, moving it legs across the grass like it’s trying to run away. Dark eyes are wide with unimaginable fear, and it’s mouth is open, gasping for air. The arrow is sticking out from where his neck meets his shoulder, the shot was too low. I failed. Not only did I fail, but now this poor animal is in pain.
“Please kill it Sesshomaru. I can’t bare to see him like this.” I sniffle and give him a sad look, but he shakes his head.
“This is your kill. If you didn’t want it to suffer, the you should have aimed better. If you want to put it out of it’s misery, then do so.” He stands back and waits.
Asshole, Inuyasha would have done this for me. I’ll have to remember that I’m not going to be babied by him. Rin I still have a chance with getting out of this hard stuff, but not Sesshomaru.
I give him a sour look before drawing another arrow. “Where?”
“When you’re this close, the head in best. Through the ear.”
Eww, okay. I can do this. I aim down, about a two feet away and release. The arrow slams through it’s ear, making a strange snapping noise. The animal lets off one last violent twitch, then goes still. It’s done.
“Recover your arrows. We will leave it here.”
“Wait, we can’t just leave it, it‘s wasteful. I didn’t just killed this thing for some kinda of practice. I’m not going to leave it here because you don’t want to carry it back. So let’s…” I just about fall over from the sheer anger rolling off of him directed at me. Shit. Now I’ve done it.
“We are leaving this meat here. Retrieve your arrows now.” He orders sternly, poutingly do as I’m told and follow Sesshomaru back the way we came. Looking over my shoulder at the once proud beast being left to rot. It’s not right.
Not long after we step into the thick trees, he turns around swiftly, and this time I do fall on my ass when I stumble back and loose my footing.
“I’m sorry… Please don’t hurt me.” I protect my head with my forearm, shielding myself from the oncoming blow, and curl into a fetal position. After nothing happens I slowly lower my arm and met his narrowed gaze.
He takes a deep breath, looks away and steps over me, leaving me to cower. I uncoil, watching him go back to the field.
Damn, I’m an idiot. What the hell am I doing? I’ve got to stop this. I’m surprised he hasn’t smack some sense into me yet.
Sesshomaru stops, looking back to the deer. Where’s he going? Curiosity overcomes me and I following him back to the clearing’s edge.
“They’re coming.” He nods towards my kill and then I sense it. A family of four mongoose youkais scamper from their den and over to the deer, quickly going to work stripping it’s fresh.
He knew there was hungry youkais near by. He left my deer for them. Sesshomaru, you really have changed. I never thought I’d see the day you’d provide for a family of lesser youkais that you don’t even know. Maybe you’re not so bad after all.
**********************
We spent most of the day testing my skills on smaller woodland critters. Making most of my shot, I killed a rabbit, two ducks, and a lizard.
The lizard was the hardest one. The sucker was so small and ran up the tree so fast I was sure I missed it. Don’t know what I’m going to do with it now. Maybe Ah-Un likes lizard? I know I ain’t going to eat it.
We walk back to the hut, Sesshomaru hasn’t touched me since my last freak out. I’m not sure, but he seems either hurt or pissed by my episode. Probably the latter. I wish I can learn to control this. Maybe it’ll just go away with time. All things considered, I did leave that camp a lot luckier then most women, too bad I don’t feel so lucky.
We hang up the catch by their feet until we can get around to cleaning them. I guess I’ll be doing that by myself, it is kinda the woman’s job to prepare the meat, even if she was the one who killed it.
I excuse myself for a minute, sneaking into the woods to relieve my bladder, then wash my hands in the bucket of bathing water.
I wonder if we’re done for the day? It’s getting late and I should start dinner, Rin’s not back yet. I open my mouth to suggest to call it a day, but he beats me to it.
“One more test. Come.” I follow him as he directs for me to stand in the same spot I was when I shot the apple for the second time. This seems unproductive, we’ve done this already.
“Miko…”
“It’s Kagome,” I correct him. That’s starting to piss me off.
“Miko.” Okay now I know he is doing it just to make me mad. “You are going to shot the apple once again. Time to test your ability to aim under pressure. You will need to be able to shoot even while being attacked. This time I will be charging at you.”
“What? Hell no. I can’t just sit here while you attack me! Ain’t gonna happen! You’re insane!” I shake my head violently side to side. Him barely touching me freaks me out. How and I suppose the idea of an actually threat?
“Yes, you will. I will rush you from the side, if you do not strike the target before I reach you…” He doesn’t finish his treat verbally, instead makes a show of the inhuman cracking noises his clawed fingers can make.
Point taken. I stand staring at the apple in front of me while he calmly strolls about thirty feet to my right. I hold my breath, fighting my shaking hands as I string an arrow, listening for his signal to start.
There is no way he is actually going to hurt me right? This isn’t some kind of all or nothing test, is it? Like if I fail and die, it’s okay cause I wasn’t good enough anyways? Fuck, I hope he’s playing chicken. Who knows, I have pissed him off a lot today, maybe this is for real?
The more I think about it, the less I focus on the apple. I force myself to regain my resolve. My eyes water as I stare unwavering and the holey red fruit. When if he going to start? I can’t take this. My hands start to sweat and the arrow slides in my grasp, I’m a nervous wreck. I can’t take this any longer.
“Come on, let’s just do this!” I yelled, still staring straight ahead.
Not a spilt second after I finish I hear the dirt kick up under his feet. He’s coming. I draw back the arrow, search for the red fruit. Trying hard to lined it up with shaking hands, I release.
I can hear him closing in, but I don’t look away this time. I watch as the arrow soars towards to fruit, barely nicking it and implanting into the tree trunk.
The running stops, and I fall to my knees, shaking. Relief washes over me and I release a long breath I forgot I was holding. I passed… barely.
I look up at Sesshomaru as he flicks the poison from his claws to the ground. The little green droplets burn the grass, turning it an awful brown as gas raises up. Was he actually going to poison me?
“You weren’t really going to do that, were you?” I ask bashfully, hiding behind my bangs. I don’t think I can look at him right now. But when he snickers, I can’t help but glare at his smirking face.
“Maybe.” Okay either he really was prepared to kill me just then, or he has a really sick sense of humor.
I rise to my feet, taking the same stance I used to when I would bitch Inuyasha out. Stomping my feet and clenching my fists at my side, I start screaming.
“Maybe? MAYBE? How dare you! Who the fuck do you think you are? You can’t treat me like that. I am not some item you can just throw away if I don’t live up to your expectations. That’s it! I take back every nice thing I thought about you. You’re still the same old physco you always were!” His little smirk doesn’t fade as he turns toward the hut and walks away, back towards me.
“Who am I, you ask? I am Lord Sesshomaru. And I will do as I please.” All I can do is stare, stunned, as he looks back from the doorway, grin gone and his apathetic face back in place. “Tomorrow we leave for Zenaku. I’ve deemed you acceptable.”
