Chapter 10

Kagome and Sesshomaru spent the rest of the day talking. They discussed his work and what she could help with. He told her all about Rin and how he had ended up with her. Sesshomaru and Kagome were both happier than they had ever been. When the time for the kids to come home drew near Kagome slowly made her way to her room to get her make-up. She carefully applied the make-up to hide the bruises. She was just finishing up when Sesshomaru walked in. She turned to him and smiled. He looked around the room and was shocked. Everything looked so old, like it was falling apart. The only things that looked fairly new were her clothes. Even most of her shoes were so worn out that they were falling apart. He felt a pang of guilt in his chest. He had been charging her so much rent that she had to go back to a job that was dangerous and then when she paid the rent she didn’t even have enough money to get decent things.

Kagome noticed the way he was looking at all her stuff and blushed in embarrassment. Most of her furniture had come from flea markets and garage sales. She didn’t have the money to buy new things. The only stuff she wasted money on was clothes so she wouldn’t go around looking like trash. Sesshomaru turned to face her and she looked down unable to meet his eyes.

“Later why don’t we move your clothes to my room?” he said walking up and hugging her.

“It’s not as bad as it looks,” she said refusing to look up at him.

“Still, I want you to be with me,” he said putting a finger under her chin raising her face.

He lightly kissed her and then slipped a necklace around her neck. She looked down to see a small golden chain with a pendant in the shape of a crescent moon. The pendant was sapphire blue matching her eyes.

“What is this?” she asked softly.

“It belonged to my mother, she told me to give it to my soul mate when I found her,” he replied pulling her closer to him, “and tonight at dinner I am going to tell Inuyasha and the children that we are to be mated.”

Kagome smiled up at him and wound her arms around his neck. They both just stood there in a comfortable silence, until they heard the door open downstairs. Sesshomaru picked Kagome up bridal style and rushed back to his room. He gently set her on the bed giving her a chaste kiss before heading downstairs to meet the children.

He no sooner said hello than they asked, “How’s Kagome? Is she still sick? Can we see her?”

“Kagome is still sick but she is a little better. You can see her, but don’t jump all over her, she still hurts,” Sesshomaru replied, “She’s in my room.”

He barely finished the last part before the kids both ran for the stairs. He caught up with them in no time and walked with them to his room. He opened the door and both children ran to the bed chattering away about their day. Kagome smiled and listened to them, asking questions now and them. After a few minutes Rin gently climbed up on the bed and moved to sit by Kagome, handing her a card she had made. Kagome took it and smiled hugging Rin before sitting the card on the nightstand. Shippo stood by the bed and handed her his card next. Kagome looked at it and then leaned down to hug him to, she hissed in pain from leaning down.

“I’ll go make your tea, come on kids let her rest,” Sesshomaru said holding the door open.

“Daddy can I sit with Kagome, I’m tired? I promise I won’t hurt her,” Rin asked looking at him with her puppy dog eyes.

He looked to Kagome and when she nodded that it was ok, he nodded to Rin.

“Thank you Daddy,” Rin said scooting closer to Kagome.

Sesshomaru nodded and closed the door. He headed downstairs to the kitchen with Shippo at his heels. After grabbing all of the supplies he turned to Shippo.

“Uncle Sesshomaru, what really happened to Kagome? I can smell her pain, but I do not smell sickness,” Shippo asked innocently.

“So you figured it out. Don’t tell Rin, but Kagome was attacked last night.”

“Attacked? By who?”

“Kouga, so if you see Kouga anywhere near here tell your father or I,” Sesshomaru said.

He couldn’t say he was surprised by Shippo knowing, he was after all a full demon. He didn’t want Rin to find out however.

“Ok, uncle Sesshomaru. I won’t tell Rin, I know it would upset her and if I see Kouga around here I will let you know,” Shippo said in a solemn voice before turning to leave the kitchen.

Sometimes it was hard to remember that Shippo was only a child, he seemed so intelligent. Sesshomaru knew that Shippo would do as he said, Rin was like a sister to him and he wouldn’t want her upset. Rin also seemed pretty attached to Kagome, so Sesshomaru knew that if she found out the truth that she would be upset. He knew Rin didn’t just want to stay with Kagome because she was tired, she wanted to stay because she wanted to be with Kagome to try and make her feel better. He smiled to himself as he finished the tea and headed upstairs with it. When he opened the door the sight that he saw caused his chest to swell and a smile come to his lips. Kagome was propped up on pillows against the headboard and Rin was sound asleep with her head in Kagome’s lap.

“She didn’t want to sleep, she said she wanted to help me. I talked her into laying down and at least resting,” Kagome said running her fingers through Rin’s hair.

Sesshomaru walked up and handed her the tea, “Do you want me to move her? Is she hurting you?”

“No, she’s fine,” Kagome replied smiling back at him as she took the tea, “She is such a sweet little girl, you’ve done a good job with her, especially considering you’re a single parent.”

“Yes, she is sweet, and soon I will no longer be a single parent,” he said taking her hand and kissing it.

“You know what is strange about this? A couple of days ago Rin asked me if I would be her mother, she said she wanted a mother for her and to make you happy.”

“She said that?” Sesshomaru asked, he had never heard Rin mention anything about wanting a mother, but she wanted a mother not only for her but to make him happy?

“Yes, you can ask Shippo. He wanted me to be part of the family too. He said he also wanted his uncle to be happy.”

Sesshomaru was completely stunned. Both of the children wanted Kagome to be with them. They wanted her to be family. He knew that Kagome had not agreed to be his mate just to make them happy, but it was still amazing how they wished for the same thing he had since he met Kagome. He was worried that Rin might feel bad about it thinking that she was losing her place in his heart, but she actually wanted it. Kagome watched the emotions play out over his face as she sipped her tea. She didn’t disturb him, she knew he was deep in thought, besides she was content to just watch him. Rin moved her head a little in Kagome’s lap drawing her attention back to the small child.

“Mama Kagome,” Rin mumbled snuggling closer to Kagome.

Sesshomaru had watched the display, he knew Rin was sound asleep so she wasn’t trying to manipulate the situation. Kagome shushed her and continued to comb her fingers through Rin’s hair until she had calmed. He looked up to see Kagome staring at the little girl in her lap with a look of pure love in her eyes. As soon as she finished her tea Sesshomaru took the cup from her and placed it on the nightstand. Then he crawled into the bed wrapping his arms around both of his women. His soon to be mate and his beloved daughter, he could feel the warmth spread through him as he realized that he had a family. It felt like something that had been missing in his life was suddenly filling that empty space. Kagome leaned over and rested her head on his shoulder. Sesshomaru felt like he could stay there like that forever, but it was cut short by some sort of commotion downstairs. He sniffed the air and almost growled as he caught the scent of Kouga. Kagome felt him tense and asked what was wrong.

“Nothing, just a small problem, I’ll take care of it. You and Rin stay here,” he said giving her a quick kiss before taking off downstairs.

Once he made it downstairs he quickly followed the scent to the living room. There stood Kouga holding Shippo in front of him, his claws at the kit’s throat. Inuyasha stood to the right facing Kouga, growling at the wolf that dared to threaten his son. Shippo looked scared, he had gone to tell Inuyasha the second he smelled Kouga coming, but the wolf had caught him just as he was telling Inuyasha. He started to shake, feeling those claws lightly prick his neck drawing small drops of blood.

“What is the meaning of this?” Sesshomaru asked in an icy tone.

“I have come for the antidote to the poison you injected me with. If you don’t give it to me I will kill this kid,” Kouga snarled.

“There is no antidote, however it will wear off after about a week,” Sesshomaru replied, only telling him one of the possible outcomes.

“Kouga, give me my kid now! If you hurt him I will tear you apart you fucking bastard!” Inuyasha yelled, his eyes flashing back and forth between red and amber as he fought to keep control of his beast.

“Like you could ever beat me dog shit,” Kouga yelled back.

That was it, Inuyasha’s eyes changed red and he attacked. He moved so quick that Kouga didn’t have time to react. Inuyasha managed to grab Shippo from him before he could slit his throat. He handed Shippo to Sesshomaru and attacked. Kouga tried to block him, but his strength had increased tenfold with the transformation. He swung at Kouga over and over, his claws cutting deep gashes all over him. Kouga continued to move back and finally saw his opportunity. He jumped through the window and took off as fast as he could. Inuyasha was about to chase him when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He growled and was about to attack the person holding him when he heard a familiar voice telling him to come back, his son needed him. Slowly the words processed and he started to calm and transform back. As soon as he was himself again he turned to see his brother still holding Shippo. Shippo was shaking and had his face buried in Sesshomaru’s chest.

Inuyasha reached for him trying to calm him. Shippo slowly turned his face toward him and with tear filled eyes he sprang into his father’s arms. Inuyasha held him apologizing over and over again. He had never wanted Shippo to see that side of him, and he never wanted to scare him. Shippo continued to cling to him telling him it was ok. Inuyasha pulled back for a moment to check Shippo over, he started to lick the small bleeding spots on his neck, stopping the bleeding and healing the small wounds.

“Daddy, are you ok now?” Shippo asked looking into Inuyasha’s eyes.

“Yes, I’m fine. I just lost control for a minute because he threatened you,” Inuyasha replied, stroking his son’s hair.

“I am going to make sure he is off the premises then set the security system,” Sesshomaru said jumping out the broken window.

He followed the trail of blood and the wolf’s scent all the way to the gate. He turned on the security system and decided to make rounds of the property just to be sure. When he found no other sign of the wolf he started to head back to the house. He stopped suddenly however when a breeze brought the scent of the wolf and his blood to him. He followed it and his heart nearly stopped when he found out where it ended. The trail ended at the edge of the house right under his window and he could see a trail of blood going up the trellis.

Kagome!

He quickly formed his cloud and rose to the balcony, covering his scent and aura as he did so. The wolf would never sense him coming. He landed lightly on the balcony and looked in through the open door. Kouga was in his room and Kagome and Rin were cowering in the corner. Kagome had Rin covered protectively with her body. Sesshomaru started to move towards the wolf when he felt Kagome’s aura flare.

“Get away from us! This is your last warning Kouga,” Kagome yelled at him.

Kouga took another step toward them and Kagome slowly rose keeping Rin behind her. Her eyes began to glow pink and out of nowhere an orb of pink light formed and was sent flying toward the wolf. Kouga screamed as his body burned, slowly being purified by her miko energy. Sesshomaru was about to move out of the way, but a barrier formed around him, protecting him from the blast. Kagome covered Rin’s ears still shielding her from the scene. Finally Kouga became nothing more than a pile of dust and the barrier around Sesshomaru disappeared. He looked at what was once Kouga and then moved to Kagome. She started to wobble and he ran catching her before she hit the ground unconscious. He gently picked her up and lay her in the bed, making sure she was comfortable. When he turned back Rin ran into his arms crying. He picked her up trying to comfort her.

“What happened?” he asked.

“Kouga came in through the window and hit Kagome. She tried to move away but he hit her again. She finally managed to move us both to the corner. Kouga kept saying mean things and saying that Kagome was his. I didn’t see the rest,” she cried into his chest, “is mama Kagome going to be ok?”

Sesshomaru was surprised by her choice of words but quickly recovered, “Yes, she will be ok. She just needs to rest and regain her strength.”

Rin looked at him for a moment and then nodded. As soon as he put her down he could hear footsteps approaching.

“Sesshomaru is everything ok, I felt a strong aura and there was so much screaming.”

“Yes, Inuyasha, everything is fine. Kouga came up here and Kagome purified him,” he replied then quietly closed the door.

He could hear Inuyasha’s retreating footsteps as he turned back to the bed. Rin had already crawled up on the bed and was starting to doze off with her head resting next to Kagome’s. He smiled and crawled onto the bed with them. He needed to be close to Kagome, he had just been too close to losing her again. At least the wolf was out of the way for good, that was one less thing to worry about. He lay there for about half an hour before getting up to head downstairs. He called Inuyasha into his study.

“What’s up Sess?” Inuyasha asked closing the doors behind him.

“I want you to call and make us a reservation at that restaurant you like so much,”

“Why? And how many?”

“I have something important to tell everyone and five,” he replied.

“What time?” Inuyasha asked curious about what was going on.

“Make it around eight.”

Inuyasha nodded and left the study to go make the call. As soon as Inuyasha left the room Sesshomaru called the store he used for tuxedos. When they answered he ordered a nice dress and told them the size. After faxing them a picture of Kagome he instructed to have it delivered to the house at six. He knew that they would find a nice dress for Kagome to wear to dinner. After he finished his call he went up to Rin’s room to find a suitable dress for her to wear. He then went back to the room to wake up Rin so she could bathe before getting ready. He gently lifted her from Kagome’s side and walked out of the room before waking her, so as not to disturb Kagome.

“Rin, honey, it’s time to wake up.”

She started to stir in his arms and slowly opened her eyes, “Hi daddy.”

“Hey sweetie, I need you to wake up and go take a bath. Then put on the dress I set out for you, call me if you need any help.”

“Why do I need to take a bath and why do I need to wear a dress?” she asked in a groggy voice.

“Because we are all going out tonight and I have a surprise for everyone.”

“Is Kagome coming?”

“Yes, now go get cleaned up,” he said setting her down so she could go take a bath.

“I love surprises,” she said happily, skipping off to her room.

Sesshomaru smiled, she would definitely love this surprise. After he heard the bath water start he made his way to Shippo’s room. He was surprised that Inuyasha was already in there picking out an outfit. He could hear the bath water running in Shippo’s bathroom. This was going to be a night to remember, and hopefully Kagome would enjoy it. He was sure she had never been to a fancy restaurant before. It was almost six so he decided that it was time to wake her up so she could take a shower.
