There are close to thirty-six million people living in Tokyo and on any given morning there could be hundreds of thousands commuters on the streets. Everyone pushes forward, racing to the next densely packed group of people in a citywide cyclical dance of unobtainable prosperity. It is never enough; there is always something to covet.
Yet, they push forward and each other away. Unhappy with the world created for them they drive towards development. They are relentlessly clawing for artificial status until they die unfulfilled by their foolish version of evolution after a fleeting moment of time.
So they push forward, the countless masses all racing and all hungry; like little ants trying to feed their foolish higher purpose of conquering Mother Earth herself. If any one of those scurrying below had thought to look up, they would have seen the winds waft through silver hair belonging to a being staring down at them from the tallest building in their city.
They are everywhere.
They have taken over everything.
…How was this possible?
In a streak of red Inuyasha finally caught up with Sesshoumaru high atop the skyscraper. Specks from their smooth, concrete vantage point glistened in the yellowing sun. Breezes entwined into their hair and whipped the loose clothes around their bodies, permeating the fabric and tresses with the stink of limitless fragile bodies below and the cost of their progression. The rumble of a thousand conversations mixed with a variety of high pitched shrieks, grumbles of constructions, the bass of engines, and hums of electricity. It was a deafening, harsh, ongoing melody of the time and Sesshoumaru was concentrating to ignore the constant assault, pushing it into background noise. The sudden presence of the hanyou behind his back, however, distracted his meditation.
Inuyasha was still for only a moment, acclimating himself with the outside once again, before opened his mouth to bait the taiyoukai.
Sesshoumaru beat him to it. “You knew of this.”
With unspoken words stuck in his throat Inuyasha searched the artificial horizons of flat topped buildings for an answer. Finally exhaling, he explained, “Hai, and I was trying to tell you that before. All the youkai are gone.”
“No,” Sesshoumaru challenged, “just weak.”
Inuyasha took a defensive stand in his confusion. “Nani?”
The demon lord shut his eyes in an attempt to will sense into his unwelcomed companion. “Of course, your half-blood will be unable to sense it. They are weak; only traces buried deep within the insufficient aura of humans.”
A few minutes passed as he slowly accepted this as fact. Everything since the battle with the child miko was connecting together, however it was not in their favor. At least… at least they weren’t all dead. Jumping ahead in the conversation to combat the taiyoukai, Inuyasha argued, “You can’t stay here.”
Sesshoumaru glared over his left shoulder. “You would attempt to prevent this Sesshoumaru?”
Feeling his blood heat up with the anticipation of battle, Inuyasha screamed, “It’s not your place!”
“That is no cause to leave,” he responded while looking back over the city.
The hanyou growled deep, threatening the stoic lord. His fingers cracked as they tensed, ready to rip apart anything they touched and Tetsusaiga felt heavy on his hips as he considered unsheathing the demon blade.
Sesshoumaru glanced over his shoulder quickly once again before leaping unnoticeably behind his challenger. While Inuyasha spun around searching for the lighting fast threat, Sesshoumaru gripped the edge of the bandages on his left arm and in one quick rip they were in tatters, floating down towards the asphalt street as the wind carried them away. The wounds were sealed, leaving red, new skin in its place.
They both stilled to prepare for the inevitable attack.
With a thick growl and claws ready Inuyasha lunged for Sesshoumaru, only to resort to digging his claws into the cement roof to slow him down as once again Sesshoumaru was gone in a flash. Using the momentum of his attack, he swung around on the hand implanted into the hard stone, once again facing the taiyoukai who had avoided the assault easily. Inuyasha was crouched down, eyes glowering in anger, claw tips blackened by tar, and chunks of manmade stone littering the ground around the crevices left behind by his efforts to not fly off the roof.
Sesshoumaru had landed gracefully on the top of the nearest building, seemingly unfazed by his half breed and brother’s attack. The sunlight behind him blackened all details of his person, but the impressive form stood threatening against polluted skies.
Inuyasha growled again, snapping, “You’ve seen all of this now, what history has done here. You know this is no place for youkai! Our Kami has failed us and let us vanish!”
“Hn,” his silhouette responded as Inuyasha rose to his feet. “Your kind still exists, mutt. Do not include yourself with this threat so easily.”
“Keh, fuck you!” Inuyasha snarled, bending his knees in promise of another attempt, prodding him with a mocking tone. “Afraid of some humans?”
The demon lord’s jaw clenched, but kept his eyes passive. “This Sesshoumaru fears nothing.”
“Look around,” Inuyasha waved dirty claws, gesturing to all their over sensitive eyes could see. “You should be.”
The cracking of knuckles proceeded a deep response, “Do not project fears, it only exacerbates your weakness.” Proving his point, Sesshoumaru was on Inuyasha in a flash; the hanyou barely dodging the poisoned claws aimed for his demise. They flew past one another, but both quickly pivoted towards the other.
“Even you cannot stop time, Sesshoumaru. Being in this time won’t help, because even your pompous ass will be wasted here!”
The taiyoukai growled as Inuyasha continued, “You will not stay here. You can’t!”
Noticing Sesshoumaru preparing to leap, Inuyasha again set out to attack. The elder swatted Inuyasha claws away as they met mid-air.
Grabbing onto the red haori Sesshoumaru steadily restated, “That is no cause to leave.”
Though Inuyasha tried to rip at the wrists of his captor, the mighty inuyoukai did not loosen his grip. Using his youki to control his flying movements Sesshoumaru spun, dragging Inuyasha in a single, sweeping circle, and releasing him with a final push. The hanyou flew through the air at an impressive speed, flying over the street and crushing the high corner of a building across the way. Large chucks of debris fell towards the Earth in a dangerous rain upon the swarms of people below; up until now unaware of the battle in the sky. After the full effect of impact finally released its momentum Inuyasha started sliding down the side of the building. Slightly dazed, he unsheathed Tetsusaiga and drove it deep into the corner, scattering more dangers to the ground from the deep slash that was left behind as it slowed his descent. When he came to a stop he looked up at Sesshoumaru, now high above him, standing once again on the edge. His shoulders were squared at his opponent and his chin was lifted, clearly claiming victory.
Unnecessarily screaming, Inuyasha baited him with, “Let’s stay then! You met our enemy, she will waste everyone. It’s either hide here or go back to hide, just don’t think you’ll do better here.”
Before Inuyasha could register the movement, Sesshoumaru’s claws were around his neck and slamming him into the side once again. Tightening the grip he demanded the hanyou’s attention. Inuyasha grabbed the wrist at his throat with his free hand, puncturing the skin and unsuccessfully attempted to tear the vice away. His feet dangled as he scowled at Sesshoumaru, whose eyes were red, feral and threatening with fangs exposed.
“Your reasoning for returning is childish." He snarled, exposing his lengthening fangs. "There is no honor there or in the future from running. There is no honor if there is no fight. No human shall overtake this Sesshoumaru and none shall take me alive. The time has come to right what has been wronged. We will return to fight to survive." With a brillant flash of his aura, Sesshoumaru's eyes turned red. "The youkai will not extinguish, not while this Sesshoumaru fights.”
The taiyoukai once again flung Inuyasha through the air to impact through the thick glass of yet another high building, sending melodic chimes of scattered glass to fill the air and reflect beautiful specks of golden sunlight like falling daytime stars. Inuyasha felt the modern obstacles of computers, desk, and humans crumble against his back as he flew through them, then finally collided against the inside wall of the office building.
Screams of shocked and injured humans along with loose papers and debris whirled around the room from the high winds intruding from the broken window. The scattered mass of people curled up into fetal positions trying to block themselves from the danger. Inuyasha, still dazed on the floor from the hit, looked up to see Sesshoumaru standing strong against the winds of the now missing wall. He was growling in deep, threatening tones with eyes glowing in crimson reds, penetrating through the flickering of fluorescent lights dying from the crash.
Inuyasha turned away from Sesshoumaru’s predatory glare to the scared faces of the people that surrounded them. Forgetting the risk before him he spoke, unheard by weak human ears but clearly understood by the taiyoukai.
“We have to get out of here.”
“Again,” his voice was low and cut across the noise of chaos that surrounded them, “You presume to control this Sesshoumaru.”
He was on the hanyou in a flash, punching him square in the jaw with a hit that sent him flying past a frightened, huddled group.
Sesshoumaru started again to pursue when a high pitched cry seem to resonate above all others. Stopping his quick steps he turned his head to the little girl clinging to a woman whose face was buried into the humans mass. The little girl’s face, however, was exposed.
Her black hair was loose and laid down over her shoulders that were tight with tension as she hugged her mother’s arm so forcefully her own shook from the stress. Tears streaked her flushed face, gluing loose locks of midnight hair to her cheeks, scarring her innocent youth. She must have sensed him staring at her for she slowed her cries. Timidly, her eyes opened and looked directly at him with deep pools of chocolate brown that assaulted him with familiarity. She was being so brave, staring at the cause of her fear. The more she looked in his eyes the more she loosened her grip, and to him everything went quiet.
Sesshoumaru was mentally berating himself. It wasn’t her. Her soul would never, could never come back. She would remain gone forever, possibly unfulfilled, and never able to obtain complete peace.
And he had been the reason why Rin’s soul would never be reincarnated.
But for a moment he held onto hope. Her tears were slower and silent now. For that quick moment he wanted her to never fear him again and in his lapse Sesshoumaru offered a comforting growl; one that once belonged to the girl that followed him many years ago.
Upon hearing the fearsome animal growl at her while their eyes were locked she misinterpreted the gesture. The girl screamed, tightening her hold on her mother and once again sending quick, sharp, salty tears to the ground. She squeezed her eyelids together, breaking the spell and the hope he foolishly held for the briefest of weak moments.
Sesshoumaru sneered at himself and once again cursed his father’s fang at his hip. Of course it wasn’t her; it will never be her again. Turning, he saw Inuyasha rushing at him.
“We leave, now.”
Barely registering Sesshoumaru’s words and almost tripping in the space from which the taiyoukai had just disappeared, Inuyasha slid across the carpet with bare feet, watching his target fly off towards Kagome’s shrine. With a quick glance around the quieting room he noticed the eyes upon him, begging him to follow and not for his help. He looked off towards the broken window and slightly hinting at remorse said, “I’m sorry.” Inuyasha leapt out the window to reclaim Tetsusaiga and once again catch up with a puzzling Sesshoumaru, muttering curses to voice his confusion as he ran.
