The sound of little green feet slapping against the onyx marble floor reverberated off the stone walls of the Western Fortress. The kappa was running as fast as his short legs could carry him, shrieking the whole way.
“Lord Sesshomaru! Lord Sesshomaru! Lord Ses…” ‘THUNK’ “Ommph.” Jaken rose from the floor quickly after colliding with something solid. He hoped he hadn’t run into a wall again. He rubbed the lump on his forehead absently. “Oh, Milord, it’s you. Forgive me, but there is a wolf at the gates wishing to speak with you. He says he carries a message that is for your eyes only.” “Hn” Sesshomaru glided through the corridors of his fortress and made his way outside to the entrance gate. There was a male ookami standing there, admiring the chiseled décor of said gate. He was unremarkable in every way, just another cur from the East. His sandy brown hair was cropped short and he wore a sad excuse for a breastplate and a fur pelt hiding just as much as a loin cloth would. Barbaric. Sesshomaru was never fond of the wolves and even less so after he found out how Rin had died, but politics were politics. He had to at least put on airs for reputation’s sake. The ookami straightened at once and bowed lowly showing his respect. Sesshomaru gave a curt nod in acknowledgment. “You have something for this Sesshomaru?” “”Yes, My Lord. I was instructed to only place this into your hands.” He produced a letter that had been sealed with the mark of the Eastern Ookami Council. Sesshomaru took the letter. He narrowed his eyes at the wolf before him and turned around leaving the ookami at the gate, dismissing him. His task was complete. It was time for him to leave these lands and return to the East. Sesshomaru settled behind his desk and opened the unusual letter. He hadn’t been contacted by the Ookami Council in close to 400 years. Why now all of a sudden and why when winter was in full swing? He opened the letter and began to read, his eyes widening in surprise. Sesshomaru, Taiyoukai of the Western Lands, Son of the Great Inu Taiyoukai General InuTaishio Your presence is hereby requested by the Eastern Ookami Tribal Council for the induction ceremony for the human Miko Kagome the night of the last Full Moon of the current month. As the recognized Alpha of the Miko, your attendance is of the utmost importance. Health and Prosperity, Elder Yorozohu, Ookami Council Representative. Sesshomaru snarled and disintegrated the summons with the acid dripping from his claws. His anger rose higher as his eyes bled red, his snarls reaching volumes that caused the servants in the halls to scurry and hide from their Great and Terrible Lord’s wrath. He had been wrong about the Miko. He was not one to be wrong. He was never wrong. He had thought her different from the rest of her vile race. He thought her honorable and honest, a small ray of light in a sea of putrid filth. He had trusted her, something that was not easily given. He had been a fool. She was a coward who turned her back on her duties, on her promises. She had led him on a useless chase, had wasted his precious time. She was no different from the very creatures he had killed in her name several months ago. She had brought emotional harm to the one he held most precious above all else with her deceit. She would die. He stormed out of his study with long threatening strides. Jaken cowered against the stone wall as he passed, the corridors void of any semblance of life, the treble of his snarls still ripping gutturally from his throat. He threw the front doors open with such force that they slammed against the outer stone walls with a deafening boom, one splintering under the strain. He cared not. His mind focused solely on the detestable betrayer, that traitorous wench. He summoned his light orb. A blink later he was over the wall and barreling toward the East. Even if he pushed all his strength into speed, he would arrive a few hours after sunset on the night of the ceremony. He smirked, viciously as he imagined the light of life fading from her very human brown eyes. ‘No one crosses this Sesshomaru.’Kouga heard the light, musical laughter of Kagome wafting through the tunnel leading to his den. His face broke into a smile that oozed sheer bliss. He picked up the pace of his steps to reach her sooner, unexpectedly impatient all of a sudden. He had to will his feet not to run straight through the flap that hung over the doorway. Instead, he stopped and took a few deep, calming breaths. He tamed his goofy smile into a lighter smirk and entered his chambers. He stood just inside the entrance, enchanted by the way her face lit up while she laughed, the way her chestnut eyes sparkled with mirth, her delicate hand resting lightly over her tilted, full lips. She turned those twinkling eyes on him, her laughter slowed to a stop and she smiled, giving him an unobstructed view of a perfect row of white, blunt teeth. His goofy smile returned with a vengeance. They remained like that for what seemed an eternity. “If you two are quite finished, I would greatly appreciate it if you would fix this, little sister.” Saburo’s deep voice resounded, shattering the moment. “What happened to you?” Kouga asked, not even attempting to hide his amusement at the appearance of his Beta. His long, curly hair was loosed from its normal ponytail, but plaited into tiny braids, some woven into an elaborate, very feminine design. Saburo sat cross legged in front of a kneeling Kagome, looking quite perturbed and…pretty. Kouga couldn’t take it. He erupted into hearty laughter, his shoulders shaking as he clutched his stomach. Saburo’s eyes narrowed and he pouted, resting his face on an upturned palm, while his elbow rested on his knee. Kagome joined him in little giggles as she began to undo her handy work. “I’m sorry, Saburo. Your hair is just so, so pretty. I couldn’t help myself.” She said through her dying giggles, fingers working to remove the braids. “My hair is not pretty. Never trust a woman. First its ‘I like your cooking.’ Then it’s ‘You’re so easy to talk to.’ Then it’s “I love your hair.’ Then I’m all done up like some prissy female and my Alpha is laughing at me and what’s worse, the one who has victimized me is also laughing.” He said, mocking her with a high squeaking voice and waving his hands in a dainty way. She slapped him lightly on the shoulder and shook her head. Kouga reined his laughter into chuckles, wiping tears from the corners of his eyes with claw tipped fingers. Living with this woman was anything but boring. “Oh, don’t be so melodramatic. It’s so very unmanly.” She teased, giggling again. Saburo’s head spun around to face her with a look of pure indignation, his emerald eyes giving away his merriment at her play with words. “Are you calling me a woman?!” He exclaimed with fake bravado. “If the slipper fits…” She responded with a shrug. His eyes went wide and his mouth dropped open, the corners ticking, fighting the smile that threatened to crack his playful facade. He swatted her hands away and stood, fingers raking through his hair to try to smooth what she had done. “Well, I will have you know I am very manly.” He said haughtily, finding a remaining braid and deftly untwining it. “Are you now?” She asked with a smirk. “Yes. Anyone can tell you that I am an infamous ladies’ man.” “Mhm.” Her lips pursed and head bobbing in agreement. “Infamous ladies’ man, huh? That’s why you’re still unmated.” Kouga chimed in, his own toothy grin in place. “Never going to happen. I, oh fearless leader, am a terminal bachelor. Wouldn’t want to disappoint my many admirers, now would I?” He said with a smug smirk. Kagome cracked up in a fit of laughter. She waved her hand in apology when they both turned to look at her. Her laughter being contagious causing both wolves to smile. Saburo threw his hands up and shook his head. “That’s it. See if I cook for you anymore, little miss.” That got her attention. She sobered quickly and shot her head up to look at him. “You wouldn’t?” She said shocked. “Wouldn’t I?” He said raising an eyebrow and crossing his thick arms. She gasped and clenched a fist over her heart. Kouga shook his head at her antics. She was so innocent at times. It warmed his heart and…other things. He shook his head again to cleanse his devious thoughts. “Enjoy the dinner I cooked, because it will be the last.” He tipped his head to Kagome, grin still prevalent and clapped Kouga on the shoulder as he walked to the exit. Kagome stood and rushed after him, grabbing his forearm and tugging until he turned to look at her. “Saburo, you promised to make yakimono.” “Ah, but that was before you made the girly jokes, little one.” He waggled his finger at her and she pouted, turning large glistening doe eyes up at him. He rolled his eyes and sighed heavily, giving in. She smile unapologetically and clapped her hands together. “So, I’ll see you tomorrow night?” “Tomorrow, then. You do not play fair, sister.” He said with a wink and left. Kagome was almost bouncing with excitement at the promise of a special treat. Kouga watched her for a moment before turning to his chest and placing her furs on top of the closed lid. “I got your furs from Natsuki. She said if you need anything else to let her know.” “Thank you, Kouga. How was your day? You hungry?” She asked kneeling before the pots on the stove with several bowls in her hands. “I could eat.” Kouga purposely ignored her first question. His cheerful mood was dampening as reality seeped in. He still hadn’t come up with how he was going to break it to Kagome that she wasn’t pack anymore and that she would have to be put on display in front of the Council and every wolf with eyes to prove her worth. The Elders had informed him today that the rumor mill had been churning, which was never good. It was even worse considering the rumors were about him and Kagome, saying that he was going to mate her, like it was set in stone. Sure, he would love to, would never give it a second thought, but she would have to agree and he was fairly sure she wouldn’t. Not right now anyway. ‘That’s right, Kouga, keep hope alive.’ Half of the pack was positive that the union was going to happen and assumed the ceremony at the meeting in three days was going to be for the pack to accept his new mate and not just a pack sister. This was going to cause a problem, especially if Kagome actually agreed to be scrutinized. Too many could stand up and speak out against her and would probably give her pause enough to change her mind. In his mind she was perfect. She was an excellent healer, great with kids, and could handle some of the toughest sons of bitches he had ever seen with just words or a bow and arrow, depending on the situation. These were things he had seen with his own eyes, Hakkaku and Ginta, too. That’s not saying what she could do with her Miko powers or her training under Sesshomaru’s tutelage. He was sure his knuckle-headed friends would speak on her behalf and Saburo, too. He just wasn’t sure that would be enough and without her requirement to fight, it would be that much harder to get her accepted. When did things get so damn complicated? Kouga took the bowls she offered him and sat down beside her, like they did every evening. He was so comfortable in their little routine. They would eat in silence most evening, this one being no different. He didn’t mind. It gave him the perfect opportunity to watch her. He loved the way her lips would slide over the chopsticks as she took a bite, the way her fingers curved under the bowl as she lifted it closer to her, and the way her little pink tongue would peek out between those petal pink lips to catch the broth or a stray grain of rice at the corner of her mouth. His pelt was beginning to get a little snug. Maybe watching her wasn’t the best idea at the moment. He focused his attention back to his own food, finishing quickly. “I’m going to bathe.” She nodded her head and continued to eat. He placed his bowls to the side and made a spot over the fire for the water kettle. While the water was heating he milled around grabbing his change of pelts and various bathing supplies. He only used the ones Kagome favored. They weren’t overly fragranced, just clean smelling, natural. He was glad she wasn’t the type of girl that liked the more floral soaps that some woman liked. His nose was sensitive and he didn’t enjoy those smells nowhere near as much as her personal sweet scent. There was no way he would want that covered up. He stripped his arm bands off and bent to untie his leg and foot wraps. He untied the straps to his armor and the ribbons floated to the ground. He had forgotten about them completely. He scooped them up and smoothed them into their original pristine condition. He put his armor and katana away and walked up behind her. She was stealing his hot bath water out of the pot to wash the soiled dishes. She always did that, but pretended she didn’t. She placed the bowls in the bucket and just before her hand touched the soap, he covered it in his. She jumped, causing herself to stumble backwards into him. His strong arm caught her around the waist to steady her. He didn’t let her go. He stood there enjoying the fleeting feeling of him holding her close, her back pressed against his chest, her tiny hand in his. She stepped out of his grip, leaving him empty and cold. “I didn’t mean to scare you, Kagome. I’m sorry. I just wanted to tell you not to worry about those tonight.” “It’s okay. So, I guess you caught me, huh?” She said with a sheepish grin. “I thought that pot got lighter after I brought it closer to you. Nice to know I haven’t been going crazy. I’m just being robbed.” He chuckled lightly. “Oh, ha ha.” She said, rolling her eyes. Kagome looked down at what he had in his hand. She gingerly wrapped her hand around his wrist, pulling it up to inspect the brightly colored ribbons. He opened his hand to reveal the beaded patterns embroidered on the silk bands. She ran her finger over them and looked up at him questioningly. “I, uh, I got these for you. I thought maybe you would like them.” She returned her chocolate gaze to the ribbons and he lifted his other hand to tuck part of her parted, long bangs behind her ear. “Your hair has gotten so much longer than I remember. It’s beautiful. I thought these would complement it nicely. May I?” She nodded once in consent and he picked a royal blue ribbon out of the tiny stack in his palm. She relieved him of the others so he could use both hands and lifted her hair. He pushed the rest of her bangs back and placed the ribbon carefully atop her head, snaking the ends behind her head to secure it in a bow at the top of her slender neck. The pads of his fingers ever so lightly ghosted across her soft skin as he pulled his hands away. She dropped her hair and he combed his fingers through it. He caught himself and took a step back to admire her. The ribbon was just the right color to accentuate the barely noticeable blue highlights in her ebony tresses. She blushed under his scrutiny and took a few unsure steps forward, placing her hand on his bare shoulder and stood on her toes to bestow a chaste kiss on his cheek. He closed his eyes at the contact, opening them when she pulled away. “Thank you, Kouga. They’re perfect.” She said softly. He acted before his brain could catch up and stop him. By the time the sluggish organ got there, it was too late to turn back. It was all or nothing. He cupped her face in his palm, tilted her head up and brushed his lips across hers. Sparks erupted from the union and traveled down his body. It took her a hesitant moment to respond, but when she did, he couldn’t help the low growl of approval. This was Nirvana. Her movements were skittish and uncertain, but grew more confident with each stroke of his experienced lips on hers. He wound his arm around her tiny waist and pulled her close, her hands resting on his chest. He ran his tongue along her bottom lip requesting entry. She granted his wish and his tongue delved into her moist cavern, sampling her. He shuttered with barely contained desire as her delicious taste overwhelmed his senses. He had dreamed about this for so long, fantasized about it, but his imagination never prepared him for the onslaught of sensations. The lines of retreat were fading into nonexistence with each caress of her soft appendage against his. Her fingers curled in the end of his ponytail, pulling it slightly. This small, seemingly insignificant innocent action sent shockwaves through him and directly to his groin. He knew in that moment, she would be the death of him. He laced his fingers through her hair, deepening the kiss to an almost blindingly passionate level before breaking away for much needed air. Well, he didn’t need it, but his gasping, flushed woman did. She raised trembling fingers to her moist lips and looked up at him with glazed eyes. The smell of her arousal tinted the air around them, causing his stiff manhood to twitch in its bindings. He placed his forehead to hers, his thumb caressing her cheek lovingly. He committed this feeling, her scent, this entire stolen moment to memory. He untangled himself from her and grabbed the now boiling pot of water. This was going to be the only pot of hot water he put in the tub tonight. He seriously needed a cold bath after that. Kagome washed the dishes anyway. She needed a distraction. Her mind drifted to the kiss they had shared and then to a very naked, very wet Kouga bathing in the tub behind her. The way his taught, muscular frame encompassed hers and the gentle, soft way his fingers caressed her skin flashed in her mind eye suddenly. The memory bled into when he tugged her head closer and almost devoured her, leaving her shaking and her knees weak. She placed her wet hands to her neck and face trying to cool the raging heat inside her. She’d never had such an intense reaction to someone before, but she had never been kissed like that either. Then again it could just be Kouga. The Prince oozed ruggedly pure, raw gorgeous masculinity out of every pore, but she was sure there was more to it than that. He had been so patient, while she had been so virginal. She felt the heat in her face intensify. She had never been ashamed of her virtue. She was a lady and she believed in saving herself for her wedding night. It was a gift that she wanted to give only to that one man, the one she would be with until her dying day. She was a modern girl with old fashioned morals. She was also a time traveling Miko who didn’t fit in either world, so being different was never something she dwelled on. Being from the future where sex was a normal, less taboo topic, she learned long ago that there were other things you could do that didn’t involve going all the way. Kouga was Gods only know how many centuries old with all kinds of experience under his belt and she was a 23 year old human virgin. For once in her young life she wished she had some kind of experience, had done something to gain the knowledge to know that she was doing something right or, in this case, wrong. He had just walked away, hadn’t even spoken to her since they kissed. She must have looked pretty stupid. Kagome let out a dejected sigh and dried the dishes, making sure to keep her eyes averted from the bathing area when she went to put them away on the shelf. She heard the tell-tale sound of the water filling the water pot, signaling her turn and the completion of his. She turned to see Kouga place the pot over the fire for her. He was dressed in only his lower pelts, his waist length; black hair was down, recently combed, dripping and clinging sinfully to his copper skin. The Gods knew what they were doing when they made him a prince of demons; he was positively sinful. The heat swirled in her belly and her breath stuttered. He looked at her, locking vast ocean to her soft chocolates. Her heart skipped a beat and her breathing stopped all together. Sinful. He held his clawed hand out to her. She took in a steadying gulp of suddenly scorching air and slid her hand into his palm. Acutely aware for the first time of the strength in those large, calloused hands. It would be so easy for him to crush her, but yet his touch was soft as feathers on a breeze. The heat inside her flared, burning hotter than ever before. Gods what was wrong with her? It wasn’t like she hadn’t ever touched his hands before. ‘Get it together, girl.’ “Sit with me, Kagome. I have to talk to you about something.” “Okay.” Her hand fisted over her heart as he pulled her to sit next to him on the stone floor, their legs touching. She repeated ‘Act normal. Act normal. Act normal.’ over and over in her head as she focused intently on keeping her breathing at a steady pace. “You already know that there’s going to be a meeting in three days with the Elder Council to decide Ayame’s fate. There are a few things that you don’t know that I need to explain. The entire pack is required to be present for this.” “Oh, so I have to come, too. Saburo said she could be put to death or exiled. Maybe I can talk to them and explain it was all a misunderstanding. She shouldn’t have to go through such harsh punishment because of me.” Kouga visibly cringed at her words. This was what he was afraid of. She was not going to be happy with what else he had to say. “Kagome, you can’t do that.” She stiffened her back and set her jaw in defiance to his command. “And why on Earth not? She had no idea I wasn’t going to be your mate. It was only natural for her to be upset. She cares for you, Kouga. As far as I’m concerned it was completely understandable.” His heart twisted painfully in his chest at her admission. Regardless of her time here with him, he was only playing house. She would never return his feelings beyond friendship. He swallowed around a large lump in his throat before he continued. “It’s not that simple. Under the laws that we have adhered to throughout the millennias, one who unjustly attacks their Alpha must be brought forth before the Council and judged according to their deeds. It doesn’t matter that she was mistaken. Even if…” He paused and swallowed thickly. “Even if we were going to mate, she had no right to attack me. I am her Alpha, the leader of this pack. My word is absolute and she has no cause to defy me in such a way. If she had a concern she should have come to me in a rational way. She knows the laws. Her Grandfather is an Elder. She knew what would happen. She’s the only one responsible for that. You have no ownership in it.” “I’m pack. I should at least be able to speak my peace in her defense.” “That’s the thing. Now listen, Kagome, this wasn’t my call. A lot has changed around here in six years. This is a new pack. All the tribes are united under my leadership and not all of them hold the same beliefs my original pack does. They still hold grudges against humans, believing them to be lower beings. I don’t believe that, most who are close to me don’t believe that, but the Council does. They hold the final word in the matter of you being pack.” “You mean, I’m not…I’m not pack anymore? But Hakkaku and Ginta still call me sister and so does Saburo; he wasn’t part of your old pack.” “Back then, when I declared you a member of my pack, we were all so spread out. It was kinda each Alpha for himself. The Council rarely got involved in the minute details, but now we’re all together, just like it used to be during my Great, Great Grandfather’s time. With that comes the resurgence of the chain of command. You are still pack to everyone that counts. You’re still pack to me.” Kagome was shocked that she wasn’t officially a member of the pack anymore. She had assumed everything was still the same because it was something that just always was. She knew they were of two different worlds and that most demons hated humans. Kouga’s own tribe wanted to eat her in the beginning. Kouga had kidnapped her for Kami sake. She had never been short sighted in that way, but they were all the same in her mind. She never put up borders. They just happened to be a lot stronger, with sharp claws and fangs. Sure she was a Miko, a natural enemy to the demon race, but that didn’t define her. She used her power to eliminate evil and to help others, demon or human. Not to obliterate every breathing demon that walked in her path. She judged the character of each individual case and found that they were no different than man kind in many ways. The pain she felt was so unexpected. She couldn’t hold back the tears that poured from her eyes. Why did things have to be so complicated and divided? Why couldn’t they all see it her way? She felt like the weight of all the pain she had held back over the years came crashing down on her all at once, threatening to crush and suffocate her. She had lost another family. Her tears increased to body wracking sobs as she buried her face in her hands and curled into herself. It just wasn’t fair. What had she done to deserve this much pain in her life. All she tried to do was what she felt was right. She didn’t think herself to be a bad person, so why? Kouga couldn’t stand it. She had just broken, shattered into a million tiny, fragile little pieces right before his eyes. The scent of her tears and the thick stench of pain and despair burned his nose. He hadn’t meant for this. He didn’t know what to do, but he had to do something. She looked so alone and smaller than her usual, already tiny, self all curled up like that. It broke his heart. He acted on instinct, scooping her slight weight up in his arms and placing her in his lap, wrapping his arms around her protectively, bent legs and all. She buried her face in his bare chest and cried harder. He began a gentle growling thrum in his chest to soothe her and stroked her back, while rocking her like a cub. “Shh, Kagome, don’t cry. We can fix this if you want. Just please, please don’t cry, love.” He said softly. She sniffled and looked up at him with her tear streaked, swollen face. Of the many expressions Kagome had, this was not one he ever wanted to see again. He bent his face down and licked a salty trail of tears of her face. She gasped in surprise at his forward actions. He repeated the process on her other cheek, licking her forehead in completion, and resting his head against hers. “The Elders are giving you the chance to prove you’re strong enough to be an official pack sister, but you would have to be put on display in front of the entire tribe. I’m not going to lie to you; they’re going to pick you apart. You don’t have to if you don’t want, but if you do, I’ll be right there with you the whole time. I promise I will never leave you alone.” Her eyes cleared and the pungent aroma of despair gave way to the metallic scent of her determination. She gave him a watery smile and grabbed his bicep with both hands. “You promise?” She asked hopefully. “I promise.” He replied returning her smile. “You ready for that bath?” She nodded her head emphatically, sadness forgotten, and unfolded from his arms. He immediately slapped himself mentally for opening his big mouth. He missed her warmth, but she wanted a bath and he was not going to disappoint his woman. He could stand to go through the motions of this illusion for a little longer. The thaw wasn’t far off and she would be leaving him soon. He might as well enjoy this while he still could. He tried not to think about how much he was going to miss her.
The sun had just peeked over the horizon when Hiroshi located the hanyou’s traveling group. They were packing up their camp when he approached them. The red clad hanyou brandished his sword and threw it over his shoulder. “Oi, wolf, what do ya want?” He said eyeing him suspiciously. Hiroshi played the part and bowed low, just like he had with the stick-up-the-ass Taiyoukai. He rose with a fake smile plastered on his face. “My apologies, I am Hiroshi of the Eastern wolf tribe.” He said cordially. “You’re one of Kouga’s mangy wolves? What the hell do ya want?” Hiroshi felt his ire rise at the ill-mannered hanyou. Thankfully the houshi, identified by the holy powers swirling in his aura, stepped forward, whacking the dog eared half breed on the head with his staff. “Now, now, InuYasha. That is no way to greet a guest. You will have to excuse our friend, it is just his way. Now what business does Prince Kouga have with us, Hiroshi?” He said pleasantly. “That is quite alright. I am not allowed to divulge the information. I was requested by the Elder Council to deliver this message directly into the hands of Master InuYasha. That is all.” “I ain’t the master of shit, wolf.” “InuYasha.” The houshi said warningly. “Feh. Just give me the damn letter and go back to your mangy, flea bitten leader. Tell him I said he still stinks.” He handed the letter over as InuYasha snatched it from him rudely. He bowed low and ran a short ways away. He couldn’t wait for the reaction of this Inu brother. Lord Sesshomaru’s had been amusing and would have been terrifying if he hadn’t been hidden so well. He listened intently at the conversation going on between the small pack. “You read it, Miroku. Kagome taught me some, but I ain’t so good at reading yet.” “Of course my friend.” There was a rustle of paper and the sound of the wax seal being broken. The houshi, Miroku he was called, cleared his throat and read the summons aloud. “The letter is as follows: Master InuYasha, Protector of Edo, Son of the Great Inu Taiyoukai General InuTaishio Your presence is requested by Prince Kouga, Alpha of the Eastern Ookami Tribe, to human Miko Kagome’s induction ceremony into the Eastern Ookami Tribe as Alpha female the night of the last Full Moon of the current month. They send their respective hopes that you will bless their joyous union. Health and Prosperity, Elder Yorozohu, Ookami Council Representative. What?!” The surprise was obvious in the houshi’s voice. Hiroshi snickered evilly when the hanyou’s irate voice erupted from the clearing. “WHAT THE FUCK! I’LL KILL THAT PIECE A SHIT WOLF!”
