The Heir and the Spare
The Continent of Japan is in danger; humans and demons are engaged in a deadly war. To avoid calamity Princess Kagome, a human, finds herself betrothed to the heir of the demon-dominated Western Lands, Prince Sesshomaru. Too bad she finds herself falling for her future-husband's younger brother, Inuyasha.
.xx.
"Now entering, Prince Sesshomaru!"
Somewhere from the mezzanine a voice shouted; everybody in the foyer was immediately upright and alert, preparing for the entrance of their revered heir who ran away at the first sight of commitment. Kagome had her eyes glued to the double doors that separated the castle from the outside world. In just moments she would see the man, no, demon she would be spending the rest of eternity with.
'Till death do them part wouldn't even be a sufficient statement in her case; her lifespan would be extended to match his after the mating rituals.
The dread that bubbled in her stomach did not lesson as the seconds flashed by. The urge to glance at Inuyasha was great, but Kagome was a strong-willed woman. She was not going to succumb to the desires of her femininity. Head held high and jaw squared, Kagome had her eyes locked on the iron double door gates; her beau would be arriving any minute now.
Her actions did not go unnoticed by Inuyasha and Izayoi; the former's anger spiked and the latter's concern heightened. Inutaisho, however, took Kagome's sudden straightening-up to be excitement and his grin broadened.
Two stately demons (Kagome assumed that they would've been some canine-demon, not necessarily dog but a close relative) pulled the doors open and the bright light from the outdoors temporarily blinded the inhabitants of the foyer. Kagome shielded her eyes, as did Izayoi, but the demons were quick to recover from the suddenness. Within moments of the door opening, a tiny toad waddled in. Its nose was pointed and crooked and it held a staff that… looked a lot better than the toad did.
Kagome couldn't help it, she spoke before she thought: "You're getting me married to him?!"
Despite himself, Inuyasha stumbled and began howling in laughter. Izayoi also had a few giggles herself and, slowly, the foyer succumbed to the hilarity; Princess Kagome thought the ugly impish toady demon was her soon-to-be. The situation was something none of them could've ever fathomed.
Kagome glanced at the Royal Family. "I fail to see why what I said warranted such mirth…"
"That…" Inuyasha choked on his laughter and couldn't complete what he wanted to say. Kagome's head whipped back to the gates when she heard it being slammed shut and, to her surprise, behind the ugly toad was a tall and handsome demon – Inuyasha's brother… their features were so similar that Kagome couldn't have missed it.
"Oh… oh…" Kagome gulped. "I… uh…"
"That is Jaken," Izayoi was the first to recover, "Sesshomaru's vassal."
She was unable to help the red that flushed her face. Why couldn't the earth split in half and sallow her alive? Oh, the embarrassment… What possessed me to assume that the vassal was the heir to the West?! Kagome kept her mouth shut, lest she said something else that made her seem naïve and idiotic.
Sesshomaru's eyes scanned the foyer before finally coming to rest at his parents. With Sesshomaru's attention on them, both Izayoi and Inutaisho's resolves hardened; they had a bone to pick with their elder son. Izayoi was especially angry. If Sesshomaru didn't leave then Inuyasha and Kagome wouldn't have gotten closer…
And wouldn't be in love.
Perhaps Kagome would've fallen in love with Sesshomaru instead.
Sesshomaru's childish antic was cause for Izayoi to ensure that both her sons were happy, and her future daughter-in-law. And the only way to accomplish that was to make sure that Kagome, somehow, married Inuyasha and not Sesshomaru. But with her hard-headed mate determined to see their elder son off with the human princess, the task would prove to be much difficult.
It was as if blinders were put on Sesshomaru; he strode up to his parents and spared a glance at his younger brother. Inuyasha stood tall with his arms crossed and didn't pass the opportunity to shoot his brother a smug smirk. It was as if he was saying you're in a carriage-load of shit, dear brother, and I'm not. Good luck fishing yourself out of this mess. Ha, fucking, ha.
"Mother. Father."
Izayoi raised her eyebrow but did not return the greeting. Even though she was his step-mother, she treated him as much like a son as Inuyasha was. And, as her role allowed, she was as angry as any mother would be with the stunt that Sesshomaru pulled. Not allowing his mother's silence to affect him, Sesshomaru turned to his father.
"How hav—"
"I think," Inutaisho cut off his son, "that you owe your future mate an apology before you engage in small talk, son. You have been blessed that your younger brother has been here to ensure that she felt as home as she could. Really, to run off at the first mention of marriage."
Sesshomaru scowled. "I did not run off at the first sound of marriage!"
"Really?" Izayoi spoke. The foyer was silent and merely watched the interaction. They weren't expecting the King and Queen to display their unhappiness in public… but at least the commoners' curiosity was satisfied. They watched on, as well as Kagome, leaning forward slightly when the conversation became heated. "Why is it when we mentioned that beautiful Princess Kagome was going to spend some time with us that you left with the excuse of our soldiers dying?"
"They were!"
"There wasn't an exponential increase in the casualty, Sesshomaru." Izayoi sounded diplomatic. "We are in a war, casualties are to be expected, but there was not a situation that warranted our heir to run off to help. And, be honest with me, what did your presence in the battlefield do to help? From what I know, casualties remain the same on both sides of the war; you running off did not help us as much as you believe it would've. It was an excuse to not face your future mate."
Sesshomaru's face as hard and he bit his tongue. His parents were being unreasonable… "Can we discuss this in private?"
"Privacy was not your primary concern when you left, so why must it be now?" Inutaisho took over at making the jabs. "Imagine Princess Kagome's surprise when she arrived at the castle, expecting to meet her suitor, and facing his brother instead. I should've gotten them married… and you know what? I should've just handed Inuyasha the throne as well."
Inuyasha coughed and looked at his father. "You can pull me into the scenario but don't talk about giving me the throne. There is way too much pressure. Besides," Inuyasha's ochre orbs trailed back to his brother, "I enjoy watching my brother squirm under the scrutiny of our parents."
Izayoi stepped away from her mate whilst sighing. "You are like your father, Inuyasha. I am going to take a walk with my future daughter-in-law. When you are up to being a man, Sesshomaru, you may find us in the courtyard." Izayoi strode past her son briskly with her eyes set on Kagome. It was the first time Sesshomaru laid his eyes on his future bride and, surprisingly, found her quite beautiful. He was expecting…
Not what he saw.
It was quiet enough for a pin to drop in the foyer but Izayoi was not fazed by the atmosphere at all. Tension swirled around all the inhabitants but with the poise and profession that could only be possessed by a Queen, Izayoi whisked Kagome away. The latter was very unaware of how two brothers' had their eyes glued on her, one of them thinking how stupid he was to leave.
And the other kicking himself for being in love.
.xx.
"Is my older son what you thought he'd be?"
Kagome and Izayoi were walking through the rose gardens, enjoying the quaint outdoors, away from people and the situation of Sesshomaru returning. Stopping to pluck a pink rose from its bed, Kagome used the opportunity to smell the flower instead of answering Izayoi. The Queen knew what she was doing and allowed it.
It surprised Izayoi how Kagome was still doing so well after all that was thrown at her.
"He's… he's just like Lord Inutaisho and Prince Inuyasha."
That was what Izayoi wanted to hear; Inuyasha's name.
"You've gotten close with my son, haven't you?"
Kagome did not lock eyes with Izayoi. Instead, she continued to walk the path with the Lady of the West half a step behind her. How strange was it to be interrogated by the mother of the man… demon… that she was in love with? Kagome was hoping a circumstance like this wouldn't arise but it did.
And she was facing it.
I must've angered the spirit of a previous King to be punished like this.
"We've grown comfortable with each other, if that is what you mean."
Izayoi smiled gently. The girl was diplomatic, wording her answers carefully to ensure that she said what she wanted to without revealing what she felt. But, alas, Izayoi wasn't as naïve as Kagome thought she was; she had years of experience, raising three dog demons alone. Perhaps, humorously enough, raising her husband was the most difficult task. Sesshomaru was always around to chase his younger brother around, but Inutaisho was sure whiney when he wanted or needed something.
"Comfortable isn't what I meant, dear girl." Izayoi plucked the rose from Kagome's grasp. "Has my son told you how I met his father?"
Kagome shook her head. Where was Izayoi going with this?
"We met hundreds of year ago, before there was any animosity between his people and ours." Izayoi and Kagome arrived at a small pond and, thoughtlessly, she threw the rose into the body of water. "I wasn't of any noticeable nobility. In fact," Izayoi grinned while looking at Kagome, "I was out for a swim on the Miyaji River."
Kagome's eyes widened. "Miyaji…?"
"Yes. I'm under the assumption you know that true love is found on the surfaces of those waters?"
Kagome nodded, slowly. She wasn't expecting that. Izayoi continued with her story: "The story goes more along the lines of Inutaisho's potential betrothal to Sesshomaru's mother, Inukimi. They were good friends and, though they weren't in any title-specific relationship, they were… ah… well…"
Kagome got it, they were romp-buddies. "I get it." She quickly interrupted and Izayoi giggled.
"Inutaisho cared for her but was not ready to mate with her. By then, Sesshomaru was already born. As such, he did what Sesshomaru did," Izayoi crossed her arms and watched the expressions on Kagome's face change. "He ran away. He took a canoe and headed straight onto the waters of the Miyaji River."
"Where he met you?"
"Where he met me…"
"And the rest is ancient history?"
Izayoi smiled. "More or less. We had our ups and downs, but we made it work and I'm glad we did."
"I didn't know the story."
Izayoi put a comforting hand on Kagome's shoulder. "No, but what I'm trying to say is that you don't have to do what you were told to do. Perhaps what you really need is somewhere on the Miyaji River… where a breastplate eating sea monster lives?"
Kagome's eyes widened and Izayoi's grin broadened. "My dear girl, I wasn't born yesterday. I know. I know everything in your heart, and my son's. You just need to know that you cannot make a decision based on your duty. What your duty is, is to ensure a union exists between the humans and the demons. My duty is to ensure that my sons and one of their bride's is happy. Now, which son you chose to be bride to is your decision."
"But…"
"Don't reason with me, dear girl. I see the way Inuyasha looks at you, and don't think that I missed the way you look at him. I know everything that happens."
Kagome tore her gaze away from the motherly figure. "But I told Inuyasha that we can't…"
"Speak to each other? Spend time together? Dear girl, don't worry. You aren't the only one I will be having this talk with." Without warning, Izayoi kissed Kagome's forehead. "I want you to join my family with all the happiness you could contain. I want you to look forward to leading a life with my son, not because you are forced to. Demons live almost forever; you cannot bide your time willy nilly."
Kagome laughed, Izayoi truly was a wonderful woman.
"I will speak to Inuyasha and resolve this situation. My husband is stubborn but… so will yours be, if everything works out." Izayoi couldn't help but laugh at the look on Kagome's face. Yes, she would be more than a perfect daughter-in-law.
"Now, I must take my leave and corner my younger son. You are free to do as you please and, if that entails hiding from Sesshomaru, then go right ahead. Word of advice though," Izayoi winked, "Sesshomaru has never stepped foot in the library. That may bide you some time."
Kagome giggled. "Thank you, Lady Izayoi—"
"Nonsense, call me mother."
World spinning, Kagome walked off in the opposite direction of where Izayoi went. Everything happened so quickly—Sesshomaru coming back, Izayoi's talk with her…
I need to lie down. Or read a book… I think I shall read a book. It would give her time to think and keep Sesshomaru away, even momentarily. She wasn't mentally prepared to greet him, yet.
Especially with the feeling of Inuyasha's lips still so fresh on hers.
