“I feel kind of strange looking in someone else’s refrigerator and pantry,” Kagome said. “I mean, I know he’s your brother and all but he’s basically a stranger to me.”
“Keh, he’s a stranger to everyone,” InuYasha said. “I don’t think anyone really knows what goes on in his head. Just sit up at the breakfast bar and I’ll fix us something. Then you don’t have to feel weird about it.”
She gave him a sceptical look. “You said you hate to cook.”
“Just because I don’t like doing it doesn’t mean I don’t know how. I made you breakfast the first morning you were with me, remember?” he said.
“Yeah but that was just an omelette,” she reminded him. “I’ve been making those since I was like ten years old.”
He snorted. “Keh, you just go sit down at the breakfast bar and start preparing your apology for doubting my awesome cooking skills. I won’t make you give it to me in writing this time.”
She giggled a little as she rolled her eyes, but did as he asked. “We’ll see about that.”
She watched him as he started to cook and before long her mouth was practically watering at the amazing smells that had started to fill the kitchen. While she wasn’t going to rehearse an apology she was pretty sure that she would be complimenting him once she had her meal in front of her. He flashed her a cocky smirk as he plated their meal, but she was too busy admiring the delicious looking food he slid in front of her to acknowledge it.
“Itadakimasu,” she offered. She took a bite and managed to suppress the urge to groan with pleasure if only because he didn’t need the ego boost. “Eh, it’s okay.”
He chuckled. “So that’s how it’s gonna be, huh?”
She sighed. “Fine, it’s amazing, but now that I know you can cook like this I’ll definitely be expected you to do it again for me on occasion.”
“Well, since you let me sleep with you, I guess I can handle that,” he replied offhandedly, taking a bite of his own food as he leaned back against the counter.
Fortunately for him he was even more gorgeous as he winked at her and smiled to let her know that he was only messing with her, or she would have been tempted to point out that she could just as easily not sleep with him again. Of course it wouldn’t have been true, since she’d really only be punishing herself if she did that, but it would have been satisfying.
Instead she said, “You’re lucky you’re so cute, and so good in bed.”
He laughed. “I really do fucking love you, woman. I’ll cook for you whenever you want and not just because you let me make love to you, though I’m sure as hell not saying I don’t want to do that as often as we can manage.”
She took another bite as she smiled. “I’m glad we could come to an agreement we can both be happy with.”
When they were both finished, she insisted on doing the dishes though InuYasha did his best to make it difficult for her as he pressed himself against her back, arms curled around her middle. She pushed back against him as a well timed kiss behind her ear almost made her drop one of the plates she was washing. He snickered but relented and let her finish the clean up in peace. She had just placed the last dish in the drying rack when they were joined by Sesshomaru’s vassal.
“Your guests have arrived,” Jaken said. “They are in the living room.”
“You ready?” InuYasha asked.
Kagome nodded and he led the way out of the kitchen and down the halls to where their friends were waiting for them. They stopped at a closed door and InuYasha turned to her, wrapping his arms around her. He kissed her once, gently and then released her to open the door. She stepped in ahead of him.
Sango hurried over to her and hugged her tightly. “I’m so glad you’re okay. I was so worried.”
“Indeed, when we saw the news and could not reach you, we feared the worst,” Miroku added. “Of course, we weren’t doubting you InuYasha, but…”
InuYasha snorted as he sat down in one of the large overstuffed chairs. “I ain’t the one who got us out of there.”
Sango released Kagome and looked back and forth between them. “What does that mean?”
“It means I was wrong about her,” InuYasha said. “I was hurt pretty bad and she dragged my ass five kilometers then refused to let me give up. She saved me not the other way around.”
Kagome blushed. “That’s not true. It was your preparations and you were the reason I had the strength to keep it together for both of us. We saved each other.”
Miroku grinned. “Dare I ask? Do I detect a hint of romance between you two?”
Kagome covered her cheeks with her hands as her face heated. InuYasha just rolled his eyes and stood up to grab her, pulling her down into his lap as he lounged across the arm of the chair. She buried his face against his shoulder but didn’t try to get up.
“That answer enough for you, bouzo?” he asked. “Oh and don’t look so damn smug over there. I told you if you were playing matchmaker I wasn’t going to speak to either one of you again.”
“We weren’t trying to, honestly,” Sango offered. “That’s not to say we didn’t hope we would be seeing the return of our two friends at some point, but it wasn’t planned.”
InuYasha snorted. “Whatever. I know who she is now, your insanely hot nurse friend you were always doing stuff with and then calling me and telling me about it, but considering how it turned out we can call it even.”
“Miroku, did you really?” Sango asked.
Miroku held up his hands. “I was merely laying the groundwork for a possible future attempt.”
“You aren’t innocent either, Sango,” Kagome said without lifting her head. “You definitely mentioned him on more than one occasion.”
Sango blushed. “We just wanted you both to find happiness. She didn’t deserve to take the rest of your life after everything else.”
“Well, Kikyou can go to hell for all I give a shit about her now,” InuYasha said. “And as soon as I find the bastard tormenting Kagome I’ll send him to hell myself, which is also what we needed to talk to you about.”
Miroku’s eyes widened. “You said her name.”
“I’m done letting Kikyou have any control over my life,” InuYasha replied. “But that’s not what’s important now. Hojou Akitoki is dead and has been for a while now. Some piece of shit is wearing his face and that is who is after Kagome.”
“What?!” Sango exclaimed. “How?”
InuYasha caressed Kagome’s back as she started to tremble. “I don’t have it all figured out but I have my dispensation back and I’m going to put it to work. This fucker whoever he might be is dangerous, more dangerous than any of us imagined. We have to be careful and smart. You two need to watch your step from here on out.”
“You are in the Guard again?” Miroku asked. “I thought you weren’t ever going back.”
“I’m not, not really,” InuYasha told him. “I’m Guard in name only. After this psycho is dealt with I’m going to consult and maybe do some information gathering to pay Sesshomaru back for getting Kagome her dispensation.”
“How did he manage that?” Sango questioned. “I can’t even get one and I’m a trained taijiya. She’s not even a real miko, no offense.”
Kagome shook her head. “None taken. I never wanted to be a miko, but I guess I am one now. I’m a shikon class miko officially.”
Miroku frowned. “Shikon class. Why? How is that going to work? Technically just sitting with InuYasha like you are now is a violation of your oath.”
“That’s why I owe Sesshomaru,” InuYasha explained. “She doesn’t have to take the oath of purity or celibacy and was given special permission to consort with those of youkai blood extending even as far as mating with one. In return she has to train one day a month and to serve one day a month though never in a violent capacity, and she can retire when I do since her dispensation is only in effect when working as my partner.”
Miroku exhaled. “Wow, that must have taken threads of power I can’t even imagine. I’ve never even heard of anything like that. Even Tama and Kakera class have to pledge not to consort with youkai in any way. It’s why I’ve always turned them down.”
“I didn’t know they’d tried to recruit you,” InuYasha said.
“They wanted him to go shikon class but he wouldn’t even consider it,” Sango offered. “Imagine him celibate.”
Kagome giggled and InuYasha chuckled. “That would be the day. Might as well tell the sun not to rise.”
Miroku scowled at them. “Ha, ha yes that is hilarious. Actually, I refused on the grounds that I fully plan to marry and have children with the woman I love.”
Sango blushed. “I’m sorry. It was a bad joke.”
“Keh, I’m not it,” InuYasha said. “I thought it was a pretty good one. But Tama and Kakera class can marry right? Spiritual powers would die out if all of you gave up procreating.”
“That is true but they could not remain friends with the asshole inu hanyou they’ve known since middle school, and that is a cost far too high for any benefit,” Miroku told him.
“Shit, now I am sorry,” InuYasha said.
Sango slapped Miroku on the arm. “Quit trying to make him feel guilty when you make way more money and have way more freedom as a freelance exorcist than you could in organized life.”
Miroku grinned. “That is also true. So what is the plan? Where do we go from here?”
“First thing tomorrow I’m moving me and Kagome into one of my old safehouses in the city and then you and her are going to figure out how to ward the place against all youkai except me,” InuYasha said. “Don’t tell me you can’t, just figure it out. After that Sango is going to start teaching Kagome how to defend herself and I’m going to start recon on this asshole, hit up my old contacts and get as much information as possible.”
“In that case I guess I need to start gathering research because I have never heard of ward keyed only to a specific youkai,” Miroku said.
“Keh, you do that, but I ain’t doing shit until tomorrow,” InuYasha told him. The he smirked. “Well, that’s not exactly true is it, sweet girl? But that bastard will have to wait until then.”
Kagome’s cheeks pinked. “Shut up before I decide putting a boyfriend in the dog house for the first time sounds like a good idea.”
Sango’s eyes widened. “Kagome-chan, that wasn’t a denial.”
Kagome captured her lower lip between her teeth. “I guess I figured out what I was waiting for, who I was waiting for all this time, and can you blame me?” She reached up and rubbed one of his ears. “Look how adorable these are. How was I supposed to resist?”
He tried to growl at her but it came out more like a groan. “Damn it, woman.” His eyes drifted closed and he couldn’t seem to remember what he was upset about. “Awe, fuck it. Get the left one.”
She giggled and switched to the other, scratching the base lightly noticing with delight that one of his feet started tap against the floor. Neither she nor InuYasha noticed the way Miroku and Sango were looking at them or had any idea just how clear they were broadcasting the intimacy and affection between them with such a simple gesture.
Sango wiped away a tear from her cheek and looked to Miroku who nodded and then stood. “We should get going so I can start researching and Sango can start planning a training program for Kagome.”
InuYasha made a sound the could have been agreement, but could also have just been him enjoying the fact that Kagome had enlisted her other hand and was now rubbing both his ears at the same time.
Kagome glanced their way. “You guys be careful, okay? We’ll see you tomorrow.”
InuYasha lifted his head and captured her lips in a searing kiss and she was barely aware of it as Miroku and Sango left closing the door behind them.He wrapped his arms around her and turned so that she was straddling his lap. Her head fell back as he nipped at her throat and she could feel his hands between them working to free himself from his hakama and then between her own thighs making sure she was ready. He held his cock in one hand and her hip in the other.
“What if someone comes in,” she breathed as he guided her down onto him.
“Fuck, ‘em,” he said.
“Mmm, okay,” she agreed as she began to rock against him.
For brief moment she wondered what in the world she was doing having sex in one of the main rooms of someone else’s house where anyone could walk in at any time, but only one because as InuYasha gripped her hips firmly with both hand and moved her along his cock, all she could do was feel. She looked into his eyes and knew soul deep that she was finally exactly where she was supposed to be. Right here and now there was no doubt, no fear. He’d given his blood oath to protect her but the promise he was making her right now was an even stronger one as he offered her his heart.
She was so close when suddenly he stilled holding in place. A frown marred her brow as she looked at him until she realized he was now looking towards the door. She chanced a glance in that direction and found his brother standing there looking bored. She squeaked and buried her face against InuYasha throat.
“Oi, did you need something or what?” InuYasha asked. “You can see we kind of in the middle of something here.”
“Is that really necessary?” Sesshomaru asked.
“I’ve been living alone in the mountains for years,” InuYasha replied. “What do you think?”
Sesshomaru apraised him for a moment longer. “Hn, in any case, I will be waiting for you both in my office to discuss our next move.” Kagome finally lifted her head only to find Sesshomaru’s back to them, one hand on the door knob. He didn’t look back as he said, “I hope you know you will be paying to have that chair cleaned.”
“Send me a damn bill, or dock it from my pay. Whatever I don’t care. Just shut the fucking door already,” InuYasha snapped.
Kagome tucked her face against him once more. “Gah, that was so embarrassing.”
InuYasha snorted. “He only did it to be an asshole. There was no way he couldn’t hear you and smell us before he opened that door.” He tugged a little on her hair so she would raise her head and then nibbled her neck. “He doesn’t really give a shit. Trust me. Youkai are way less prudish than humans. You try to keep your sex life exciting over hundreds of years.”
She giggled. “I never thought of that. So are we going to meet him now?”
“We could, or we could make the bastard wait and finish what we started,” he replied.
“Well, it is his house,” she said thoughtfully. “So we’d better make it quick so we don’t keep him waiting too long. It’s the least we can do for all his help.”
InuYasha chuckled against her lips before deepening their kiss and picking up where they left off before they were so rudely interrupted by his perverted brother. If he hadn’t already been certain that she was the perfect woman and the one woman who had been made just for him, he would have been now. He was never going to let anyone hurt her again and he sure as hell wasn’t going to ever let her go.
Sesshomaru looked up as InuYasha and his miko entered the office. Once they were seated, he said, “Have you decided how you wish to proceed?”
“Yeah,” InuYasha replied. “I don’t suppose you maintained any of my old safe houses, did you?”
Sesshomaru slid a piece of paper across the desk. “Not all of them but I analyzed which would most likely be the most valuable based on location as well as other factors and weighed that against the cost of keeping them and this is what is left. I have also added a few new locations. The ones marked out in red are currently being used by others.”
InuYasha frowned as he read the list and then lifted his head. “One of these is where me and Mom lived when we were in the city.”
“Yes,” Sesshomaru said. “It was recently vacated. I questioned whether you would approve but it is in a very good location and being on the top floor has easy access to the roof.”
“InuYasha, you mother?” Kagome tried quietly as she slipped her hand into his.
“Nah,” he replied. “It didn’t happen there. Even he’s not a big enough bastard wouldn’t use the place my mother was murdered as a safe house and then offer it to me to use, and it isn’t like it doesn’t have good memories for me. Shit, nothing else on here that isn’t a total shit hole is in nearly as good a location.”
“Then am I to assume you’ll be taking that one?” Sesshomaru asked.
“Yeah, I guess so,” InuYasha said. He grabbed a pen off the desk and flipped the list over. “Get that toad of yours to make himself useful. Here are our sizes. We need some clothes that will actually blend in this century. Just an outfit or two so we have something to go shopping in, and we’ll need a ride into the city tomorrow morning.”
“Will you be wanting any security assigned to the area or any of the guard put under your command for reconnoissance?” Sesshomaru questioned.
“Not yet,” InuYasha told him. “I’ve got the monk working on something that should see to it that the place is secure and I want to do my own recon before I enlist any help from anyone else. Though, I’d ask you to find out what you can too, as much as you can without making it obvious that someone is digging, and I don’t want an order to come down until I let you know.”
“Very well,” Sesshomaru agreed. “If there is nothing further it will all be arranged by morning.”
InuYasha nodded and stood, Kagome following his lead. He ushered her out of the door first, but before he could leave Sesshomaru said his name so he looked back. “Yeah?”
“It is good to have you back, little brother,” he said.
“Keh, it’s good to be back,” InuYasha admitted.
“Oh and InuYasha, I do not wish to have to burn my house down, so please restrain yourself and only defile your miko in the room I have provided,” Sesshomaru added.
InuYasha laughed as he shut the door behind him. “I’ll try, but I’m not making any promises.”
Sesshomaru hadn’t realized just how much had he missed having his brother around. A fact which he would take to his grave no matter how long he lived. InuYasha might be the most infuriating, impudent whelp ever to walk the face of the earth, but he was also the only one who would have dared to dismiss him so easily and the only one who ever challenged him. A trait he had no doubt inherited from his mother who had also been a thorn in his side. Of course he was also the only one who could get away with it, but that was beside the point. He never would have thought it could be so tiresome to always have everyone practically begging to agree with him. He’d even taken to making outlandish suggestions from time to time just to see if anyone would have the courage to call him on it, but they never did.
Yes, there was a time when he hated InuYasha, resented him and his mother, and he definitely hadn’t made the best decisions regarding his brother after her death, but that was in the past. Clearly whoever was after the miko was clever and powerful and so now it was more important than ever that he and his brother work together. There was no other he trusted or whose strength was so close to his own, and though he would never admit it to anyone even the most powerful taiyoukai in the world could not shoulder all the burdens of being the youkai no taishou alone all of the time.
