A/N: For anyone curious this story has 33 chapters posted and I am about to post 34. So that's how far we have to go before I catch up and updates will be a single chapter at a time and probably about twice a month.
Kagome laughed as InuYasha’s breath tickled her neck. He was almost always touching her when they were together and it had become a sort of battle of wills. So far she was in the lead, having resisted him the day before until a full two scrolls had been translated, just as they had agreed upon nearly a week ago. Today though, she wasn’t certain in her ability to withstand his persuasion.
She finished up her first translation in spite of his attempts to distract her. It detailed several herbal remedies; one for fever, one for an infected wound, and finally one for stopping blood flow. The combinations and herbs used were unusual and she decided to look into them further.
She was selecting the second scroll when InuYasha’s cell phone rang. She smiled as he cursed. He always swore before he answered his cell phone no matter who was calling and she wondered if he did the same when he wasn’t with her.
“I have to go,” he said.
She turned with a frown. She could tell by the look on his face that something bad had happened. “What is it?”
“Lesser youkai are attacking all around the outskirts of the city,” he told her. “Too damn many and too organized to be acting on their own. Sesshomaru needs me to direct the eastern front.”
“I can call my people,” she told him.
“You really think we’re ready for that?” he asked. “Sesshomaru wants you to set up a second line of defense in case they make into the city.”
She nodded. “I’ll call Miroku and have him set things in motion. It will only a take a minute, then I can grab my bow and we can go.”
His brow furrowed. “You want to come with me? Shouldn't you stick around here and organize thing on this end.”
“I’m no good at tactics and logistics. Miroku handles all that stuff,” she told him. “What I am good at is projecting barriers and firing holy arrows, and it will be good for other youkai to see me working with them.”
“Then let’s go,” he said. “I’ll wait for you outside.”
Kagome grabbed her cell phone and called Miroku. As the phone rang she hurried towards her meditation room and gathered some paper and her bow and quiver and then headed for the back door. She saw InuYasha standing under the Goshinboku waiting for her and wished that Miroku would hurry up and answer.
“Kagome, have you heard?” he asked.
“Yes, and I want you to coordinate a group to for a second line of defense for the city,” she told him. “I am going with InuYasha to try and repel the youkai. From there I can contact you and let you know if they get through past Sesshomaru-sama’s force.”
“Are you certain this is how you wish to proceed?” he questioned.
“Positive,” she replied. “The youkai aren’t ready to fight alongside us outside direct supervision, but I need to be there to do what I can. I’ll be fine. InuYasha will watch my back.”
Miroku sighed. “As you command, Miko-sama.”
Kagome ended the call and tucked her phone into her pocket. Miroku was definitely going to want to have words with her soon, but she could deal with that as long as he did as she asked right now. She jogged across the grounds.
“We good to go?” he asked.
“Yeah,” she replied. “Miroku is going to handle things in the city. He’s going to give me hell about it later, but he’ll do it.”
He nodded and offered her his back. She climbed on and as soon as she had he took off at a run. She could feel the pillow of his youki beneath them as he leapt into the air. He couldn’t fly exactly, but somehow he had figured out how to give his youki enough mass that he could use it as a sort of stepping stone. It was remarkable.
As they left the city behind she began she began to feel the lesser youkai as well as those youkai defending against them. There were so many, it was almost unbelievable. There hadn’t been such an attack or one with such numbers in nearly two hundred and fifty years. Someone had to be stirring them up and directing them, mostly likely with promises of being allowed to feast on humans.
She tightened her legs against InuYasha and placed her trust in him as she took her bow in hand and drew back an arrow. She imbued it with her holy power, took several calming breaths and then fired. Her aim was true and a group of lesser youkai that had been about to overwhelm what she believed was a feline youkai of some sort disappeared in a burst of light. InuYasha slid to a stop and let her off his back. She noticed with a wince that she had sliced his cheek with her arrow, but not burned him and she wondered how that was possible.
“Inoue-sama,” the youkai said with a bow.
Kagome forced herself not to be offended at his total lack of acknowledgement of her and the fact that she had saved his life. Instead she set herself up to fire another arrow. She waited until there were several youkai that would be caught in its path and then released it. She pulled out some paper and made a pair of shikigami and set them to alert her to any approaching youkai.
She watched InuYasha as he took charge of his people and went to the aid of any who were in danger of being overtaken. He was as fierce as any youkai as she had ever seen as he destroyed anything that came his way with a slash of his claws. He threw out his hand, his fingers tipped in red and blades made of his blood and his youki sliced through a particularly nasty insect of some kind. She hadn’t known a hanyou could attack with his youki like that and began to suspect that InuYasha was extraordinary in more ways than she was aware of.
She pulled back another arrow and fired as a foul serpent youkai went for InuYasha’s back. He glanced at her as it landed at his feet and then disappeared. She smiled at him and resumed scanning the area for any threat that might try to sneak past or sneak up behind someone unsuspecting. It looked as if the fight would be over soon. Most of the lesser youkai had been eliminated.
She spun as someone cried out behind her and found the neko from before clutching his hand, her shikigami nothing more than scraps of paper on the ground. She couldn’t believe what her eyes were telling her. Had he really tried to kill her after she had saved him only moment ago? He came to his feet hissing at her and unaware of the very pissed off hanyou that had landed silently behind him.
“You really don’t want to do this,” she said quietly. “We should be fighting the lesser youkai, not each other.”
He bared his fangs at her. “I say let them have the humans. I will be a hero once I kill you and youkai are finally able to take their rightful place. I don’t believe you are as powerful as they say in any case otherwise you would have killed me already.”
“I was trying to give you a chance,” she told him. “You should have taken it.”
He laughed. “Just as I suspected, you are a coward who would hide behind a treaty that never should have been signed. I am going to enjoy killing you and after I will be able to rally those to me who would see the rule of those damn dogs ended.”
Kagome held up her hand as he slashed at her and repelled him with her barrier.
“You really are an idiot aren’t you,” InuYasha said.
The neko spun to face InuYasha. “I guess I’ll just start with you then half dog.”
InuYasha snorted. “You could try if you weren’t already dead.”
The youkai frowned and then followed InuYasha’s line of sight. Sesshomaru had arrived and was standing a short distance away. The neko’s eyes darted around, looking for an escape route. He tried to make a run for it, but before he even managed to take a single step a flash of green light took off his head. She looked over just in time to see some sort of energy whip made of youki disappearing from the tip of Sesshomaru’s finger.
InuYasha walked over to her stepping over the disintegrating corpse of the neko youkai. “Stupid bastard.”
She wanted to smile at him, to kiss him and have him take her in his arms, but none of those things could happen with his brother standing nearby. Instead she reached out with her senses to make sure all the lesser youkai really were gone. Just as she did so her second shikigami appeared to warn her.
Her eyes met InuYasha’s. “Jump.”
He didn’t hesitate before wrapping an arm around her waist, pulling her against him, and leaping up into the air. The ground where they had been standing only seconds before erupted. She tried to scream out a warning as a horrible spiked tongue shot out of its mouth, but it was too late. InuYasha pushed her away from him and his back arched as it impaled him exiting near the center of his stomach.
She tried to brace herself for impact, but instead found herself cradled in Sesshomaru’s arms. He set her on her feet, and she looked up just in time to see InuYasha cut himself free with a snarl and a swipe of his claws. She quickly drew back an arrow and fired at the youkai, purifying it completely. She dropped her bow to run over to InuYasha and see if she could help him, but was stopped by a firm hand on her shoulder.
“You must stay back,” Sesshomaru said.
“But I might be able to help him, to heal him,” she told him. “I can’t do that from here.”
“Use your gifts, Miko-sama,” Sesshomaru said quietly. “He is battling his youkai for control of his body. Should the youkai win he will need to be subdued. The youkai in him is too powerful to be controlled by his human mind and will be nothing more than a mindless beast that recognizes neither friend nor foe and seeks only to kill.”
She shrugged off his hand with a push of her reiki and went to InuYasha. His head was bowed, his hair shielding his eyes. His body was shaking with effort and a steady growl rumbled out of him. Blood was dripping from his clenched fists into the grass at his feet and rolling down off his chin where elongated fangs bit into his lips. She could feel the fierce battle waging inside him in his youki.
She reached out for him and he snarled, capturing her wrist, his claws biting into her skin. Her breath caught in her throat as blood red eyes met hers. His head jerked and his other hand came up, fingers bent slightly, ready to attack. She closed her eyes and reached out to him with her reiki, wrapping it around him.
InuYasha fought against the monster inside him even as he cursed his brother for letting her come near him. The desire to kill, was threatening to wipe away everything else, until he felt it, felt her. The warmth and light of her power washed over him, through him and quieted his youkai in a way he hadn’t expected. It was almost as if it recognized her and suddenly just thinking about causing her harm was so repellent to him that it completely eclipsed everything else, even his lust for blood.
His youkai stopped fighting against his will and the red haze cleared. He caught the scent of her blood and immediately loosened his grip on her wrist and then turned her palm upwards to examine the wounds. The urge to lick the small punctures welled up inside him and it was only with a great force of will that he resisted. He tore away a section of this shirt and wrapped her wrist before releasing her. She looked up at him and as their eyes met it was if the rest of the world ceased to exist. He wanted nothing more than to gather her up in his arms. He growled and stepped back before his brother could notice what was between them.
“That was stupid,” he told her. “I could have killed you.”
Kagome rolled her eyes. “No it’s stupid for both of you to forget who and what I am. I could have purified the youkai in you in an instant and I can call up a barrier even faster. I was never in any danger. Now, let me see if I can heal you.”
He pulled up his shirt with a groan and looked at the wound before letting it drop. “Keh, I’ll heal from this in two days, tops. There’s no need to wear yourself out on my account.”
“It’s shouldn’t be as hard to heal you as it was that youkai girl,” she told him. “You’re part human. I should find out what I am capable of.”
“The miko is right,” Sesshomaru said. “Let her try. Though you have vouched for her healing of the girl, this I will see with my own eyes.”
InuYasha didn’t think it was a good idea to be so close to her in front of anyone, but if he continued to protest that would be even more suspect. He pulled up his shirt and she reached out both of her hands hovering just over his injury. He watched as she closed her eyes and could feel her power almost like a caress.
Slowly the pain in his abdomen turned to heat that was uncomfortable but not unbearably so and then even the heat faded. He looked down just in time to see her lower her hands and to watch his youkai blood finish healing him as a final layer of skin formed.
“Did it hurt?” Kagome asked.
He shook his head. “It was hot for a second where my wound was, but that’s it.”
“InuYasha see the miko returned to her shrine so that she can tell her people that we have eliminated the threat,” Sesshomaru said. “After that return home there is much we need to discuss.”
Sesshomaru didn’t wait to have his words acknowledged as he disappeared in a flash of light. He lifted his hand to touch her face but knew that it would be stupid to do something so intimate out in the open like this. He could tell by the look in her eyes that she wanted him to touch her, but also that she understood why he couldn’t. With one last longing look he offered her his back so that he could carry her home.
When they arrived at the shrine and she slipped of his back and let her fingertips brush his hand as she walked past him. “Do you have time to come in, just for a minute?”
He considered it. It would probably be a good idea to talk to her after what she had seen of him this afternoon and Sesshomaru wouldn’t think anything if he was ten minutes longer in returning home. “Yeah, a few minutes won’t make a difference.”
She smiled a little and led the way into the house. Once they were inside and the doors closed, he wasn’t surprised to feel her press herself up against him. He wrapped his arms around her wanting to commit to memory what it felt like to hold her one last time. He couldn’t imagine a way that she would still want to have anything to do with him now that she knew what he really was, what he could become.
“I’m so glad you’re okay,” she said quietly. “When I saw disgusting thing go through you…”
He felt her shudder and held her just a little more tightly. He marveled at the fact that she didn’t seem to care at all that he had hurt her or raised his claws to strike her. “I’m hanyou. It takes a lot more than that to kill me.” He took a deep breath. “I’m sorry, I hurt you. I never would have if that bastard hadn’t been trying to take over.”
“It’s nothing,” she told him raising her head to look him in the eyes. “Has that ever happened to you before?”
He shook his head. “No, but my old man told Sesshomaru it was possible, if my youki was strong enough and I was injured. There was a sword made for the InuYasha of legend by his father, to seal his youkai blood and stop his transformation but it was lost somehow. My father tried to find the sword smith that made it, but it seems he was lost too.”
“Well, at least you know you don’t have to worry about it anymore, since I can stop the transformations with my power,” she said.
He didn’t dare tell her that it wasn’t her power that had ended his youkai’s resistance of his will, but the simple fact that neither one of them wanted to hurt her. “I don’t want you anywhere near me when that fucking monster is trying to get out. You think I could live with myself if I hurt you?”
There was something in his tone that made her want to smile, even if she was getting a little tired of him discounting her ability to protect herself. “I can protect myself, you know.”
“Maybe I don’t want you to ever have to protect yourself from me,” he told her his voice quiet.
Their eyes met and something passed between them that she couldn’t describe in words, an understanding that it would hurt him deeply if he ever gave her reason to fear him.
“Then you’ll just have to be more careful from now on so you don’t get hurt badly enough to transform.”
He growled and let his lips fall over hers, kissing her hard and deep. She really was the most incredible woman he had ever known and he hated that what they had now was all they could ever have. When he finally pulled away she was flushed and breathless and he would have given anything for an hour more with her.
“Shit, I have to go,” he said.
She nodded. “It might be a while before we can resume work. I have classes to teach and several people have asked to come by and see our progress. I will also have to oversee the promotion and graduation ceremonies. It will be difficult to find time.”
“I understand,” he told her. “Just call when you have time and I’ll do the same and if we’re lucky they’ll match up at some point.”
“Also tell Sesshomaru-sama to feel free to contact me any time if something like today should happen again,” she said. “The youkai should not shoulder the burden of protecting the city alone.”
He kissed her one last time. “I’ll tell him, and know the same goes for you. If you need our help let me know.”
Kagome watched him go and she felt a lonely sort of longing to which she had no right. He wasn’t hers to pine for or to claim and still her heart refused to listen. She didn’t know how much longer she would be able to deny how she really felt about him even if it was impossible. The mark he had made on her heart was simply too deep and too clear to be ignored and she feared what he might say or do when he discovered that for her it was so much more than just the sex or their alliance.
She took a steadying breath and sighed. There was no use dwelling on it and there was work to be done.
