The sounds of a rather volatile and profane argument reach their ears once they enter through the gaping maw of the Inu no Taishō's corpse. Kagome gives an exasperated sigh and rolls her eyes, though she already expects that the brash hanyō has picked a fight with his brother despite her having saved his ass. Well, she isn't going to save his ass anymore after this.
"It seems like InuYasha is quite unappreciative of your efforts, Kagome-san." Kurama's voice is soft, but still quite audible. It isn't as if there are any rushing winds, but the sounds of the fight between the two brothers are increasing.
"Well this will be the last time he gets help from me," she mutters, her grip on her bow tight. "I know we haven't practiced shooting while in motion, but do you think if I fired an arrow at them they'd notice?" She will at least attempt to not hit them, but she can't make any promises that she won't hit InuYasha. Not with how much of an inconsiderate jerk he is being.
"If that is your wish, Kagome-san."
They are slowly floating down to the bone-filled pit within the corpse, while Hiei has jumped off of his ride and is now leaping down ahead of them. The apparition chooses to land a safe distance away from the fighting and places his hand on his hilt just in case he will need to draw his sword.
"The heirloom Sesshōmaru is after is in that plinth over there," Hiei comments, glancing at the plinth in the center of the pit with a rather rusty looking sword sticking out from it.
"That kind of reminds me of that story about a sword in a stone," Kagome comments when she can finally see it. They are close enough now, and Kurama directs them to land over by Hiei. He sets her down and lets go of her. She lets her gaze go from the sword in the plinth to the fighting InuYasha and Sesshōmaru. InuYasha is rather bloody now, with several scratches on his face and the exposed skin of his hands and wrists while Sesshōmaru is still as pristine as he had been after plucking the pearl from the hanyō's right eye.
"Your friends have come to watch you die, InuYasha, and after they tried so hard to save your pathetic ass. You spat in their faces by following me in here." Sesshōmaru is still as haughty as ever, but then again he has the upper hand while they aren't interfering in the fight.
InuYasha glances in their direction as he leaps away from the poisonous yōki whip Sesshōmaru sends his way. He lands near the plinth and the sword but seems to pay it no mind. "I don't need your damn help," he snarls out, his ears folding flat against his head.
"Then I won't help you anymore, InuYasha, and you won't be getting any of the Shikon no kakera either," Kagome shouts at him, knowing full well that the hanyō won't abandon his quest for the fragments of the Jewel. "I won't be your shard sensor, and I'm done letting you verbally abuse me."
InuYasha's expression hardens a bit while Sesshōmaru laughs as he watches the unfolding abandonment of his brother. The hanyō lets his gaze go to the sword in the plinth and he grabs it by the hilt. Unfortunately for him, and like what had happened to Sesshōmaru when he had tried to pull it out earlier, it burns his hand, causing him to quickly let go of it.
"It seems as though you are unable to pull it out too, InuYasha. Maybe it was not meant for either of us." Sesshōmaru looks delighted at the hanyō's failure to pull the sword out, even going so far as to admit that he too has failed. "I can live with neither of us getting Tessaiga."
Kurama stiffens at the name of the sword and shoots a glance at Hiei who is staring at Kagome. "That is a sword for slaying yōkai." It is good that neither brother can pull it.
"I know, Fox." Hiei sounds unconcerned about that, worryingly so. "Kagome, you need to go pull the sword out of the dais."
"What?" Kagome speaks aloud, turning to look at Hiei, shock, and confusion on her face. "I can't pull that out of the rock or whatever it is stuck in. And if I do, they both might try to kill me."
"The sword will protect you, Kagome. Trust me in this." Hiei motions for her to go, a slight and uncharacteristic smile on his face.
"O-okay," she stammers out and turns to look at the two brothers. They are looking her way, curious as to what is going on, and it seems like their fight is on hold. Sucking in a deep breath, Kagome marches over to the plinth where InuYasha still stands and she glares at him. "Move aside," she demands sharply.
Surprisingly enough InuYasha obeys, staring at her in wide-eyed wonder at first before a glare steals over his face. "Don't ord-" His words are cut off as she grasps the hilt of the rusty Tessaiga, his eyes widening slightly. "Hey, what do you think you're doing, wench?"
"Just shut up, InuYasha, and sit," Kagome gives the hanyō another glare, watching with a feeling of triumph as he has no choice but to get flattened to the ground by the subjugation beads. She then glances over at Sesshōmaru who is watching her with the most curious expression on his face. She doesn't dare try to affix an emotion to it, so she returns her attention to Tessaiga and pulls.
The sword comes out easily, and she wonders at how much use it will be in battle in such a rusty and chipped state. "Honestly, such a big fuss over this," she mutters as she examines the useless weapon. There comes a faint pulse from the sword, one that gives her pause and makes her reevaluate her thoughts on it. Blinking as yet another pulse, followed by a hum and a whistle, her body moves of its own accord to block Sesshōmaru's poisonous yōki whip with the Tessaiga. The entire sword begins to glow, brightly, and a protective warmth settles over Kagome.
Kurama is quick to react, but he isn't able to make it to Kagome in time to intercept Sesshōmaru's attack. Instead, he has to watch as her body moves fluidly and she brings the battered sword up to block, the blade starting to glow. When the glow fades she holds a massive, perfect sword that looks like a fang and has a tuft of fur on the guard of the hilt.
InuYasha, who has a front-row seat to the entire thing, had been stunned when Kagome freed the sword and is even surprised when it transformed for her. Something in his gut tells him that it isn't supposed to do that, but then again Kagome doesn't seem to follow any set of rules that he knows of or cares for. Staring up at her, and the huge-ass sword she now holds, he can't help but start to feel a smidgen of respect for her. He has treated her horribly, but she keeps trying to help him. And now, even though she hasn't realized it yet, she has saved him once again by blocking Sesshōmaru's attack.
"How dare you," Sesshōmaru growls out, his eyes gleaming as the whites turn a feral red.
