Chapter Eleven:
Afternoon Visitor
It is now a little past noon, and for the past hour and a
half, Inu-Yasha had been trying to exact his revenge on Leota... unsuccessfully
of course.
He finally returned to his tree, deciding to think things
through a little bit.
“I guess it kinda was my fault she went nuts in the
first place. Then if Miroku
hadn’t said anything, she wouldn’t have attacked us. I should be squashing him!” Inu-Yasha mentally
screamed, “Ah well, she already got her revenge on us. I might as well stop trying. I wouldn’t want her using that weird fire
spell she used on Kagura on me.”
His need for the ‘service of justice’ finally leaving him,
Inu-Yasha went to the river to look at his reflection. He was satisfied to see that only a few
strands of hair stuck out at weird angles, but it was better than the whole
thing acting like a bird’s nest.
Turning away from the river, Inu-Yasha started walking
towards Kaede’s hut, hoping to find Leota so he could apologize for his earlier
mistake. As he came upon the hut,
Inu-Yasha heard Kaede and Leota’s voices.
“Oh no, Kaede-sama, it’s no trouble at all. I’m glad to do it, really. It not only gives me something to do, but I
get exercise doing it.” Leota was
saying, a smile in her voice.
Rounding a corner, the sight that met Inu-Yasha’s eyes
startled him.
Leota had removed the top of the outfit that had caused him
so much trouble. It lay neatly folded
in Kaede’s hands. Kaede herself was
standing off to the side of an upended log, the same log used to split wood.
In front of the log stood Leota herself, a sword in her right
hand and a piece of wood in the left.
Placing the wood on one of its’ ends, Leota moved back about five feet
from the splitting log. Both hands on
the hilt of her sword, Leota took one downward stroke.
And watched as the piece of wood fell to the ground in half.
Kaede’s good eye widened, “Goodness, Child, where did ye
learn to cut wood without an ax?”
“I used to camp outside a lot with my martial arts teacher,
who happened to be my grandmother. She
taught me the ways of the sword before she passed away. One of those ways was to be able to cut just
about anything from a distance and still have it fall apart. She also demanded that the wood be cut in
perfect halveust ust to serve as one more challenge to overcome.”
“Tell me, Child, that language ye spoke to me earlier, where
did ye learn it from?”
Leota placed another piece of wood on the log and stepped
back a few more feet, making her distance from thg teg ten feet, “My
grandmother taught it to me.”
“And how did she know it?”
Bringing her sword down, Leota picked up the perfect halves
and tossed them onto the woodpile, “Her mother taught it to her.”
“Why did your mother not teach it to ye?”
At this, Leota’s back stiffened and she took a deep breath,
“My... mother did not know the Ancient tongue. Father married outside of the... preferred
families that his own parents had suggested.
He wanted something new, so he married the first pretty thing
that walked past him. Or so said my
great-grandmother.”
“I see,” Kaede commented as she finally noticed Inu-Yasha
from the corner of her good eye, “tell me, Leota-san, what did ye think
of your mother?”
Leota let out what seemed to be a growl of warning, “I do not
speak of her.”
“And why not? Did ye
not love her?”
This time, as Leota’s sword came down, the wood was cut
diagonally. Her dark hair covering her
eyes, Leota still threw the uneven chunks onto the woodpile... a bit harder
than she had been.
When Leota looked up, her green eyes held a subdued fire
that, though controlled, was still brighter than the one that had been in her
eyes when shocking Inu-Yasha and Miroku.
“To answer you honestly, Kaede-sama, I do not speak of the
woman my father married merely because she never spoke to me. And, as to loving her? How can I love a woman I have not met?” Leota asked, her voice angry but even.
With a final swing of her sword, five chunks of wood were
split into perfect halves at the same time, and were then stacked by
Leota. She sheathed her sword and
without a backward glance, walked off, her shirt long forgotten.
“Tell me, Inu-Yasha,” Kaede began, “have ye noticed this girl
Leota acts a bit like yourself?”
“What are you talking about?” Inu-Yasha asked, finally coming into full view.
“Come now, even ye must have noticed. You heard what she said. She, too, never speaks of her mother. And to be quite honest with ye, she acts
like a half demon.”
“Well she’s not, so quit thinkin’ about it.” Inu-Yasha scolded as he ran after Leota,
determined to apologize to her.
Finally catching up to the elusive woman, Inu-Yasha found her
standing in the middle of a small clearing, her gaze fixed on the clouds above
her. She stood with her feet apart and
her shoulders squared with her feet, a defensive stance if Inu-Yasha ever saw
one... not only that, but he’d used it himself. Her hands were clenched into fists, and both of them seemed to be
glowing with a soft orange light.
Leota’s head turned sharply to her left and she narrowed her
emerald eyes. Soon Inu-Yasha scented
what had her so alert.
“Dammit! Of all
the times…!”
The thought remained unfinished as Kagome, Miroku, Sango, and
even Shippo appeared.
“I sense Jewel Shards and they’re moving fast!” Kagome called as a miniature cyclone could
soon be seen moving towards them in a straight line.
Drawing his Tetsusaiga and ready to defend what was his,
Inu-Yasha was stopped when he saw the tendrils of fire snaking their way around
Leota just as they had when she, then Kyo in Kagome’s body, had been fighting
Kagura.
“Who you are I care not!
All that matters is that I shall not allow thee to trespass here!” Leota shouted as she pointed a finger at the
cyclone and released the fire she had gathered.
The cyclone immediately disappeared and a blur landed near
Kagome.
“Hello, Kagome.”
“K-Kouga-kun!”
Leota’s heated emerald gaze turned behind her where a man
with dark hair pulled into a high ponytail stood beside Kagome.
“Did I not already imply that thou art not welcome?” Leota
asked, the fire winding around her right arm as she released it once more,
“Step away from my K-chan!”
