On the Sea Is Where I’ll Be

Memories, memories, memories. Stupid memories from when she
was once a bright eyed hyperactive child playing with her devoted parents out
in the lush green yard that resided behind her old raggedy house. Memories of
her little brother Souta being born, memories of her mother becoming sick with
some unnamed virus. Memories of her mother lying on her death bed, pale with
dark circles under her eyes and her eyes sunken in, her mouth though, always
trying to smile for her children even when she knew she was dieing. Memories of
her mothers grave and how her father always put on a brave face and tried to
make it seem like it was going to be alright. Memories of when her father first
began drinking. Memories of when she finally realized that she would have to
take over and care for her younger sibling. Memories of when she came home one
day to find her father hanging from one of the rafters…a rope around his neck
and a picture of their mother on the floor beneath him. Memories of her fathers
grave beside her mothers. Oh yes, memories, memories, memories. How she loved
and yet hated her memories all at once. She loved them because despite the bad
ones, they helped her remember her parents and how happy it was to once be a
child, without the worry or fear or the stress of living on your own in the
real world. She hated the memories because although it helped remember her
loved ones, it also brought with it a pain that could never be replaced
whenever she had to remember her mothers sick face or her father’s limp body
hanging from the rafter. It was simply a bittersweet thing.
Fluttering blue crystalline eyes open, she could vaguely
hear the shuffling of bare skin against wood. Someone was in the room with her.
This surprisingly though, did not surprise her at the moment. To put it quite
frankly, she simply didn’t feel like putting up a fight today. Her body felt
limp and seemed like there were 1000 pound weights tied to her arms and legs.
She heard the person in the room with her say something but she couldn’t
comprehend what the mystery person had spoken. Her eyes became hooded and she rolled
her head to the side lethargically. Everything at that moment felt fuzzy and
scrambled, everything and nothing making sense to her. The person spoke again.
What are they saying? Why can’t I understand? Something was touching her
forehead. It was warm and the texture felt strangely familiar to skin. Maybe
this was all a dream. She heard the voice again. It was a male voice, gruff,
deep, so familiar. If it was so familiar why couldn’t she place it then?
“Kagome…” The voice said something else but she wasn’t
listening. Kagome, that was her. Stupid ol’ Kagome. I’m-capable-of-anything-
Kagome. Unlucky Kagome. Kagome, Kagome, Kagome. How she hated her name. Hmm
obviously this voice knew who she was. Why couldn’t she think of anything but
her memories? And why was the warm thing on her forehead stroking her hair? Not
that she was complaining or anything, it did feel rather nice, but it probably
would feel better if she knew who was doing it and why.
“Hey, bitch, you better be listening to this. It’s really
important. This affects both of us, and I’m not talking about just some little
thing either. It’s pretty fucking huge in fact so you….” What? Why couldn’t she
understand? What were they talking about?! Something huge huh? What happened to
cause something… And like being thrown into a pit full of ravenous alligators,
the last few days came from the depths of her mind and clued her in to
everything. She no longer felt lethargic, no longer felt fuzzy or scrambled, oh
no, now she felt astonished. That voice was Inuyasha, the man who had turned
her entire life upside down the moment she had laid eyes on him.
And the she remembered being bitten by him. The air was
temporarily knocked out of her lungs. ‘He…he actually bit me…If he can harm
me like that..that means he’s capable of doing worse…oh god’
“You…you bit me…I don’t…” She couldn’t find words to
describe how she felt. It was just…indescribable. That’s right…he’s a pirate, a
ruthless no good scum of the earth pirate. Her eyes lifted to seek out his.
Once emotional blue locked upon semi annoyed, semi concerned gold, the water
works came. They weren’t deep hiccupping sobs, they weren’t frustrated
I-can’t-take-this-anymore-sobs, they weren’t self pity sobs, they were
just…tears. Silent, salty, wet tears. Each tear representing someone. One for
her deceased mother, one for her deceased father, one for her younger brother
who she most likely would not be able to see again, one for her old home, one
for her cat who had been inadvertently left alone when she got kidnapped, one
for the other prisoners who were on this ship and one for Inuyasha. Yes, she
had a tear for the rough pirate, because although he may not have treated her
nice or respectively, she could always sense this sadness within him. It
lingered around him like a shadow. Something probably must have hurt him in the
past, and so she shed a tear for him, despite his attitude towards her. But in
all her representational tears, never once did she shed one for herself.
Everything else, except for her.
“…You’re crying. Care to tell me why?” His head was cocked
slightly to the side, his ears were swiveling around, catching all the sounds
in the room and beyond. His face, she noted was back to normal, no bold purple
marks or elongated elements. She stared him in the eyes for a few more seconds
before tilting her head ever so slightly and wiping a run away tear that was
sliding down her cheek.
“I’m crying…for everything yet nothing. For everyone yet no
one, for emotions, for laughter, for life, for love, for pain… and you want to
know the strange part? I don’t even know why I’m crying for it. I just…I
just am.” His golden eyes were moving, studying her face with the utmost
expression of confusion on his tanned, slightly sun burnt face. One of his
clawed hands came out to wipe away another stray tear.
“That’s…a lot to cry for.” They stared at each other for a
few more moments. The tears finally stopped rolling and she quietly composed
herself. Remembering what kind of situation she was in she brought a hand up to
the stinging presence on her neck. She could feel the indents of his teethe and
she could practically see the red slightly swelling skin surrounding the marks
in her mind. With a hand still on the indents, she refocused her gaze on him.
He was looking to where her hand was covering the wounds he had inflicted upon
her, a faraway look in his golden depths.
“I..I couldn’t control myself. My demon blood took over. You
just….made me so mad. By now, you can probably tell I don’t like being
disrespected much. To be honest…I’m ashamed I lost control like that. And
because of my recklessness, we’ve both paid the price for it. Those marks, on
your skin represent something to the demon culture. Although they’re not
permanent, they still mean something. I guess you could say they sorta
represent commitment. It’s hard to explain really so I’m going to give this to
you straight, you’re stuck with me until they fade away. I know you’re probably
thinking well your stuck with me anyway since I kidnapped you anyways, but it’s
not the same thing. I mean you’re stuck with me, as in if you touch another guy
or stray to far from me, you’ll become lightheaded and might possibly pass out.
We’re connected now. Marks like these are usually intended for potential mates.
And it’s kinda one sided, I mean about the effects. If I make contact with
another woman, I won’t be affected from anything. Anyways, I don’t know how
long those marks will last, it varies on certain things. But, seeing as how our
relationship is, I’d say they won’t be there for long. But as long as they’re
on, we’re stuck together.” His voice was soft, almost whispering as he spoke.
Everything was so…unreal. Looking up towards the wood
patterned ceiling, she let out a deephearted sigh. What a world, what a world…
She felt him shift on the surface she was lying upon, which
most likely was a bed, and heard him sigh as well. A sigh of relief, a sigh of
regret, a sigh of shame? She did not know, but that didn’t really matter at the
moment. It was silent for a while, both lost in their thoughts. Many thoughts
were floating around in her head, and since Inuyasha seemed to be in a
knowledgeable mood, she took the opportunity to speak.
“I don’t really know what I’m supposed to say or how to
react to be honest. Nothing this…unusual has ever happened to me before. I
guess I understand what you’re saying, but that doesn’t mean I like it. From
the way we’ve been toward each other the last few days, being stuck together
now seems like a disaster in the making. But if we’re going to be stuck
together for who knows how long, I’d at least like to be civilized with each
other. We could call a truce, if that’s one way to look at it. I think that
would be the best action for us to take right now.” Her gaze was still on the
wood ceiling, staring at it but not really seeing it.
“I agree. I don’t particularly need to be bitched at
constantly while running a ship over something stupid, so a truce would be the
best action. Now that we’ve settled that, the only thing I feel like doing at
the moment is taking a nice long nap. It was an exhausting day today, with
having to run the ship and check up on you every other then.” Her eyebrows
furrowed and her mouth dipped into a frown.
“What do you mean had to check up on me every other then?
Just how long was I unconscious for anyway?” His rakish face replaced her view
of the wooden ceiling as he hovered over her, amusement and some shame
expressed on his looming features.
“All of yesterday and most of today. It’s evening right now.
If it counts for anything…I really didn’t mean to hurt you in anyway.
Physically hurting females isn’t really in my nature, though I’m not afraid to
give them a good tongue lashing when they deserve it.” He did look sincere when
he spoke and because of that, Kagome could find it in her heart to let him off
the hook this time. Although she didn’t really know him that well, from what he
had told her, it really seemed that he didn’t really have control over what
he’d done. A slight smile illuminated her face in a way of showing him that she
forgave him for this. And by the way he smiled lopsidedly back, he knew that
she’d forgiven him for it. He dipped his head down to her warm forehead to
place a chaste kiss on the surface. Pulling back slightly so that he could
speak but not enough so that his lips still remained in contact with her skin.
“Despite or differences so far, you’re a sweet girl Kagome.
Now, I bet you’re hungry so I’ll leave you to eat while I go make one final
round on the ship, then I can finally take that nap. You will be alright to eat
by yourself won’t you?” At her slight nod, he placed another kiss to her
forehead before removing himself from the bed to saunter over toward the food
tray and walk back toward the bed to place it in front of her. Making sure she
was situated, he turned towards the door to leave. A few seconds before
stepping out of the door he heard her voice.
“Inuyasha?” He turned around to look at her, one eyebrow
raised as in saying ‘what’ without actually having to voice it. She fiddled with
her hands for a moment before speaking again.
“You’re a pretty nice guy yourself, when you’re not being
the domineering pirate captain.” He nodded and left the room, the door clicking
shut behind him. But she didn’t miss the smile that had made itself on his face
when she had declared her opinion and decided that it had indeed been worth it.
His smile was quite breathtaking. It looks like this event
would be another memory to be added to her endless list.
Oh the memories…
A/N: I know this isn’t that original and has probably been
overused, but I for some reason like that kind of concept. And I also realize
that Inuyasha seemed not like his regular self from how I write him out to be,
but understand that he’s beating himself up about losing his control, and can’t
really find it in himself to be mad at her for something he feels is
responsible for. If that makes any sense…
Anyways, I’m hoping that the next chapter will have more
action. Again I’m sorry for the long wait and I hope to get another chapter out
soon. In fact I’ll start on it right now. See ya then.
