Sword of the Fang
Sesshomaru glared darkly at Baikal, trying not to let his unease show. They had been fighting for a significant piece of time, and he had precious little to show for it. He lowered Toukijin from its guard position- the sword didn't seem to be having an effect on the demon- and his eyes started to glow, his face lengthening as a wind seemed to pick up around him...
And as he started to transform, Baikal leapt at him- the long spike of metal that protruded from the arm guards he wore aimed directly at Sesshomaru's heart as the other demon crashed down against him. Sesshomaru felt the power suddenly leave him, fleeing before the presence of Baikal like animals flee from fire. Thrown completely off balance by this unexpected occurrence, Sesshomaru was forced to completely drop his sword, as well as abandoning his attempt to transform, as he grabbed Baikal's arm with both hands to prevent the spike from impaling him. He head butted Baikal, the unexpected attack giving him a moment and he broke away from the demon and circled around him warily, thinking wildly. Nothing seemed to be working... How had Baikal stopped him from transforming? That bothered him more than anything, implying as it did that Baikal somehow understood his powers more than he did... They exchanged a few more blows, but nothing significant.
Until Baikal moved in on him swiftly, one arm coming up in an underhand blow at Sesshomaru's stomach as the other came down to smash the demon across the shoulders, intending to bring him to his knees. Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes; the attack would leave Baikal wide open in the middle, but to take advantage of the opportunity he was going to have to take one of the hits in order to have a hand open to press an attack of his own. As Baikal came in, Sesshomaru thought swiftly; he reached up a hand and caught Baikal's arm as it came down against him, preventing the crushing blow, as he darted his other hand in and drew his claws across Baikal's eyes, poison seeping from both hands. He braced himself, expecting Baikal's other blow to stab him in the gut, but instead he heard a clang and a grunt as he felt a familiar presence beside him and Baikal hissed in pain and surprise and sprang away before Sesshomaru's poisoned claws could do much damage.
It would have been a good moment to press an attack, but Sesshomaru only turned to the newcomer to the battle. "Inuyasha," he said. For the past few moments he had felt an incredible lethargy stealing over him, which worried him immensely; his energy shouldn't be this depleted just from exchanging blows with Baikal.
"Sesshomaru." His brother came and stood in front of him, facing Baikal, Tetsusaiga pointed at him warningly. "I had a talk with Ros," he said conversationally. "She said you probably wouldn't be having any luck."
"Did she?" He put his hands on Inuyasha's shoulders and leaned on his brother heavily which made Inuyasha glance back at him in surprise.
"Sesshomaru?" he asked worriedly.
"Tired..." the demon murmured, his eyelids flickering.
Baikal snickered. "Yes, I'll bet you are."
Inuyasha glared at him. Turning to Sesshomaru, he grabbed his brother by the wrist and dug his claws in. Sesshomaru's eyes flew open as he growled softly. "That's better," Inuyasha said approvingly. "Don't let him get you."
Baikal chuckled loudly. "Oh, dear little half blood, you are most entertaining. You think he can fight me?" His eyes flashed. "No one can fight me." Moving so fast Inuyasha couldn't even see him, Baikal suddenly appeared right in front of him, swinging his arm down to smash Inuyasha with his gauntlets. Sesshomaru, following his movements, pulled Inuyasha out of the way and reached up with a snarl to meet Baikal's blow himself. His strength seemed to melt under the other demon's onslaught, and Sesshomaru was pushed to his knees by the force of Baikal's blow. Snarling, Inuyasha threw himself at Baikal. The demon backhanded him, sending him flying. Tetsusaiga flew from his hand, skimming over the stony ground with a wail.
Tenseiga seemed to cry out to its brother sword; Sesshomaru, feeling a pulse of energy from the sword he wore, pushed up against Baikal and managed to throw him off. He went to his brother, kneeling beside him. "Inuyasha," he called, but his brother didn't stir.
"How touching. But I'm afraid this is getting slightly boring." Sesshomaru whirled around, coming face to face with Baikal; he tried to punch the other demon in the face, but again felt the unexplainable lethargy fall over him, stealing the strength from his muscles. Baikal caught his punch and turned it aside easily. "Who'd have thought you'd be so easy to defeat once I'd started absorbing your aura, hmm?" At those words Sesshomaru's head came up, his eyes narrowing. Baikal snickered, long clawed fingers taking Sesshomaru's face in his hand. "Your mistake was trying to transform. It opened your aura up to me, and I've been leeching away your power ever since."
The explanation for what had so mystified him was so obvious Sesshomaru wanted to hit something- preferably Baikal. He snarled, his anger giving him the strength to break away from the other demon's grip. He needed to find his sword... He saw it, from the corner of his eye, lying not far away and he ran toward it, diving and rolling the last few feet. His roll came up short and he had to reach behind him to grasp the hilt of the sword as Baikal descended on him with a snarl. A strange energy pulsed from the sword, answered by Tenseiga, but he didn't have time to think about it- Sesshomaru tightened his grip and swung the sword around to cut across Baikal.
Baikal screamed in pain, retreating. Sesshomaru felt a thrill of victory, then glanced at the sword he held in his hand and he had to look again in shock as he almost dropped the thing in sheer astonishment.
Tetsusaiga.
Sesshomaru stared at the sword. He was holding Tetsusaiga. Tenseiga seemed to hum softly, and Sesshomaru managed to bring Tetsusaiga up just barely in time to block Baikal's lunge as the demon tried to attack him while he stood marveling over the sword. There wasn't time to think about it now... Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes. He dodged out from under Baikal's attack, the demon's leeching still leaving him uncomfortably weak, and swung Tetsusaiga at him viciously. The sword's power caught him full on, bringing him crashing to the ground.
Sesshomaru spared a glance at Tetsusaiga; before now, his strikes with Toukijin hadn't seemed to hurt the other demon at all. Baikal, bloody and snarling, whirled on Sesshomaru as he tried to make another blow, blocking Tetsusaiga with his arm brace. Sesshomaru growled softly; holding Tetsusaiga in one hand he reached out with the other and dripping claws flicked poison into the demon's eyes. Baikal flinched, Tetsusaiga pressed harder against him, and Sesshomaru's eyes widened slightly with anticipation as he shoved the sword harder, shoving it back with a sudden rush of energy and getting under Baikal's guard to cut him in half with the powerful sword.
The demon's body fell. Sesshomaru fell also, collapsing to his knees, propped up by the strength of Tetsusaiga. He looked up to see Inuyasha watching him, wide-eyed.
"Inuyasha," he whispered. Standing shakily, he went to his brother. Meeting his eyes, he offered him the Tetsusaiga.
Inuyasha pushed himself to his feet. "How?" he asked, as he took the sword from Sesshomaru's hand with wonder. He glanced up at Sesshomaru apprehensively, but the demon only shook his head.
"I do not know."
Inuyasha's eyes narrowed in confusion. "And how'd you kill Baikal with it? Ros said he deflects demonic auras. Tetsusaiga shouldn't have worked on him."
Sesshomaru looked thoughtful. "Deflects auras? That would explain why Toukijin did not affect him, as well as his twisting of the ability in an attempt to absorb mine." Sesshomaru looked at his brother closely for a moment. Reaching forward, he pulled Inuyasha toward him, running his fingers through his brother's hair, brushing them over the half breed's face. Inuyasha looked at him questioningly. "Perhaps..." Sesshomaru hesitated, thinking. "Perhaps Tetsusaiga was able to defeat him because of you."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Sesshomaru thought a moment, his head bending down so that his face touched against the top of Inuyasha's head. "Tetsusaiga was made for you; to protect humans- to protect your human blood. Perhaps... its aura is too different for someone like Baikal to recognize, being, as it is, like you, a blend of demon and human power." Inuyasha was watching him sharply and Sesshomaru shrugged off the momentary gravity. "That does not explain why it allowed me to wield it."
Inuyasha looked at him calculatingly. "You gonna try and take it again?"
Sesshomaru was silent. "No," he said finally. Inuyasha just looked at him. "When I wanted the Tetsusaiga... What I wanted was not the sword itself. I wanted..." He glanced down, meeting Inuyasha's gaze and Inuyasha reached up slightly to press his lips against his brother's. Sesshomaru's mouth opened slightly as he tasted Inuyasha, his tongue pressing forward seeking more.
I wanted my father's love, Sesshomaru thought. I wanted to be the only one he thought of. He broke off the kiss and looked at his brother, their golden eyes meeting. "I wanted something that does not exist, but which, also, was already mine. And yet..." His hand found its way from Inuyasha's hair to rest lightly against his brother's chest, feeling his heartbeat. "I think I have found it even more fully."
I recognize his love, Sesshomaru thought. Father, I see what it is that you loved and... I love it as well.
