Chapter 10: Soliel and Luna’s story
“Did you tell him?” Sesshoumaru asked as he turned to stare at Maeko. She didn’t meet his gaze; instead she leaned against a tree trunk and amused herself by staring at the sky. The sun was just beginning its descent into oblivion. She stared at the shiny iridescent shade of the moon marveling at its opaque ghost like appearance. “Have you ever wondered?” she asked her eyes still transfixed on the sky. “Why must you ask nonsensical questions, aunt? You do realize I do not read minds.” Maeko gave him a simpering smile. “I am quite aware of your limitations, Sesshoumaru.” Sesshoumaru’s eyes darkened slightly, and her smile grew larger. “I was referring to the moon and the sun, haven’t you ever wondered about their story?” Sesshoumaru followed her gaze up to the moon. He peered for a moment then trained honey colored orbs onto Maeko. “Will you think less of me if I say no, aunt?” Maeko chuckled softly. “I won’t think less of you Sesshoumaru as I had planned to tell you their story regardless of what answer you gave.” She stared nostalgically at the waning sun. “It was said that the sun and moon were powerful gods. The sun was given the name Salaya by Amaterasu and the moon was given the name Miru. Salaya was a radiant child always running among his mother’s feet. His eyes were always searching, always questioning the world around him. He was constantly pestering his mother for more, more adventure, more experiences. He simply had to know what lied beyond his sheltered world. Miru, on the other hand, was wan and quiet. He did not pester his mother Amaterasu; instead he looked for knowledge within himself. Whatever he sought to learn, he did so without aid. His struggle made him strong and uncompromising. It also afforded him little compassion for the sorrow of others. It was this trait that divided the brothers. Salaya empathized with the pain of others and sought to lesson their hurt. This is why he gave them warmth. Miru thought that pain brought strength. Thus, he brought mankind cold.” “Why tell me this, Maeko? I have little care for such things.” “Listen to my story, Sesshoumaru. With each passing day in their mother’s kingdom, the brothers had grown to hate each other. Mira had grown angry at Salaya’s cheerful demeanor and unflinching honesty. Salaya could not understand his brother, and so he grew to resent him. Salaya would nurture the earth and make plants flourish. Miru would shatter his warm hewn earth, and strangle the seedlings Salaya had coaxed into existence. Amaterasu watched in despondency and sadness as her children wounded each other. One day when the brothers were fighting, Miru struck Salaya almost killing him. Amaterasu grew angry. She banished Miru from her kingdom. He was forced to watch from afar as his brother rose into brilliance, while he struggled in shade and silence. In his isolation, Miru realized the ache he felt in his heart was not for his loss of honor. He had lost something far more precious.” Maeko trained her eyes onto Sesshoumaru’s. The all knowing stare seemed to scorch him, and he looked away. “Miru found that he had grown to love his brother. He longed to see Salaya’s face, even if it was contorted with rage. As these feelings of longing grew, so did the ache within his heart. With each rising of his brother, Miru seemed to grow paler and diminish. Amaterasu had cursed Miru to see his brother always, but never feel the warmth of his touch, or hear the soft cadence of his voice.” She paused and pushed herself away from the tree she was leaning on. She stood in front of Sesshoumaru. Her olivine eyes eye bore into him with angry intensity as she said in a deep foreboding voice, “Do not live in regret, Sesshoumaru.” “I have no regrets,” Sesshoumaru said coldly. “Hmm,”Maeko intoned softly, “I wonder if you really believe that.” She smirked at him condescendingly as she walked away. Sesshoumaru stared at the embers of the fiery sun as it dipped below the clouds. He continued to stare as the crimson vestiges faded from the night sky, and the steely silver orb rose in its place. “Is that supposed to be me,” he thought as he watched the icy stillness of the moon as it coursed its way through the sky. He broke his eyes away from the moon as a twig snapped behind him. He jerked his head to the side. Inuyasha froze as those gold eyes trained themselves on him. “What are you doing?” Inuyasha asked glancing up at the sky. “What business is it of yours, hanyou?” Sesshoumaru stated gruffly as he turned to walk back to the camp. “Wait,” Inuyasha intoned grabbing his arm before he could walk past him. Sesshoumaru jerked out of his grasp. “Don’t touch me, hanyou.” Inuyasha lowered his arm to his side. His eyes drifted to the leaf strewn forest floor. “Is what Maeko said true?” “You doubt her.” “No,” Inuyasha said with a hint of frustration, “I just needed to be sure. Why didn’t you tell me?” “I’m not obligated to tell you anything,” Sesshoumaru said in a steely voice. Inuyasha’s body tensed and vengeful honey colored orbs stared up a Sesshoumaru. “Obligated,” Inuyasha yelled in angry incredulity as he slammed his fist into the tree next to Sesshoumaru’s head. Sesshoumaru’s mask of indifference didn’t waver even as flecks of bark peppered his face. “You asshole,” Inuyasha yelled, “Those are my memories and my life. What kind of…” “Are you under the impression that I want to see your life, hanyou? Let me assure you, I don’t. I haven’t been given a choice. If it bothers you so greatly, ask Maeko to remove this curse.” Inuyasha lifted his fist from the splintered tree. “Maeko’s already refused.” “Then it appears your angry tirade is useless. If you want to be productive, why don’t you use your annoying persistence to convince her? Confronting me will get you no where. I haven’t the power to remove this curse.” Inuyasha smirked, “It really bothers you, doesn’t it? Seeing my life must be so troublesome to the person who didn’t want to be a part of it.” Sesshoumaru’s stare hardened. “Why should I want to be part of you life, hanyou? Do imagine your existence to be so profound? Rest assured, it isn’t. From what I’ve seen so far, your existence is merely a trial of mediocrity.” “Well I’m sure it’s a little more exciting than the life of a bastard prince who probably had people wipe his ass for him. It must be so difficult for you to be without your entourage of royal ass kissers. If my life is mediocre, yours must be downright embarrassing.” Sesshoumaru cracked his knuckles angrily as he stalked forward. Inuyasha jerked out of the way narrowly missing the fist aimed at his face. “What would you know, hanyou?” Sesshoumaru said as he pivoted and swung his leg catching Inuyasha on the shin and knocking him off his feet. He scrambled on top of Inuyasha pinning him to the ground. He punched Inuyasha squarely in the jaw. Inuyasha groaned at the resounding crack that echoed from his jaw. “You think you have any right to make assumptions, you low born filth.” Inuyasha spat blood out of his mouth. He grinned at Sesshoumaru. “Low born, huh,” he said, “I guess that goes for both of us. After all, we have the same father.” Sessoumaru’s golden irises darkened and his eyes bled red. He slammed a fist into Inuyasha’s chest. Inuyasha’s nose spewed blood as Sesshoumaru’s fist collided with it. “Enough,” Maeko yelled grabbing Sesshoumaru’s raised arm and pulling him away from Inuyasha, “What were you trying to do, Sesshoumaru? Killing Inuyasha won’t fix your problem.” She stared at Inuyasha’s bloody face with distain. “Are you incapable of controlling yourself, nephew? You disappoint me.” Sesshoumaru’s eyes had returned to normal. He was breathing heavily and blood dripped from his knuckles. His body felt sluggish as if all of his energy had simply vanished. He stared at his aunt blearily as she knelt by Inuyasha’s side. Her mouth moved as she looked up at him angrily, but her words didn’t seem to penetrate his ears. Her face dimmed as his surroundings ran together before simply disappearing. Inuyasha watched in surprise as Sesshoumaru swayed and fell forward. His body met the forest floor with a soft thud. Meako released her hold on Inuyasha’s shoulder and rushed to Sesshoumaru’s side. She rolled him onto his back and ran her fingers along his neck to feel his pulse. “What’s wrong with him?” Maeko was surprised at the slight edge of concern in Inuyasha’s voice. Maeko shook her head, “I’m not sure, maybe he used too much energy fighting with you.” She tugged on the crimson thread holding his armor in place. Sesshoumaru’s breathing seemed to ease as she removed it. “His body was already strained from trying to counter the effects of the bond and with this he must have pushed himself too hard.” “Will he be alright?” Inuyasha asked as he stared at Sesshoumaru’s prone form. “I honestly don’t know.” Maeko said worry creeping into her voice, “We’ll have to wait and see.” Thanks so much for the kind reviews I’ve gotten.
