Chapter 11: For all you broken hearted lovers lost
Kagome tossed in her bed, body tangled between the sheets, pillows, and comforters. The fan screeched and rotated from left to right circulating the humid and hot air. It was the middle of the night, more towards the morning than the evening. Her body was curved similar to the crescent of the moon; cradling a pillow with a grip so tight her enhanced finger nails punctured holes in the pillow’s case. She dreamt of red eyes. Whether the violence involved car crashes, collapsing buildings, or animalistic gore, there was always a pair of red eyes involved. Sometimes her own voice cackled in the darkness of her dreams as if an ever-omnipotent force enjoyed the torture the poor girl endured. From the death of her parents, to Souta, and the demon known as Kouga’s mother, Kagome was always lost in nightmares. The medication prescribed by the hospital was supposed to make her sleep throughout the night, but doctors never note what kind of sleep someone got. Such a weak little human, you are. Kagome opened up an eye and scanned the room; no one was there. You’ll lose what little control you have over me soon enough. Kagome pushed on her elbow and scanned the room again, “Who are you?” You’re forgetful too, apparently. We’ve done this before, girl. I. Am. You. “This is getting old, you know,” Kagome whispered into the darkness. “I’m becoming a psychopath, talking to myself in the darkness.” That’s why I’ll silence you soon. Kagome hissed back, “I’ve survived too much for my own conscience to seal me up.” I am not the nice prissy human that you are. I am the alpha. I will lock you and the priestess blood away and you will never see the sunlight again. “What are you talking about, priestess blood?” inu-yokai, holy priestess, and human. What a convoluted mixing for a hanyou Kagome sat up in bed and looked to her mirror, where she could see her own eyes, flickering between white, blue, and red. “You’re from Inuyasha’s blood.” Very good, human learns who master is. “The priestess might be from mom or grandma…” Kagome stood and looked herself over in the mirror. In nothing but shorts and a camisole her scars practically glowed in the moonlight, white bright skin compared to the rest of her frame. Ancestry is your only explanation, as priestess powers cannot be passed through blood bonding. That damn blood keeps me from controlling you. If we did not cancel each other you would have been disposed of ages ago. “Shut up!” Kagome shrieked, throwing her desk lamp across the room in anger. “Who the hell do you think you are?” My, my, little human has a temper The demon’s laughter filled the quiet room. She looked at the mirror and watched her eyes bleed a deep red. “You’re not getting rid of me!” Her fists connected with the large mirror. The mirror shattered and the laughter stopped. The shattering of the mirror sprung Inuyasha from his bed and in a flash he was at her room, nearly ripping the door form its frame, “What the fuck is going on?” He didn’t have a lot of time to process before he clumsily caught Kagome as she jumped towards him and threw her arms around him, holding her bloody hands away from his back. “It’s me, it’s me, it’s me, it’s me, Inuyasha,” she cried into the crook of his neck, feeling his hands lock around her back and squeeze her tight. “It is me, right?” “Who else would it be, Kagome?” he asked softly, cupping the back of her head and cradling her. “Who else would it be…” “I can hear her voice, Inuyasha.” She lifted her head and looked up at him, his face so confused, but concerned, for her, “she wants to take me away.” “Who is she?” “She keeps saying she’s me,” Kagome bit her lip and buried her head in his shoulder again. “Red eyes that stare me back in the mirror…” Inuyasha scooped Kagome up with his right hand, her legs locking around his waist as she supported her weight, and walked towards the kitchen. “Keh, well you’re here now, and bleeding all over the floor.” The last of the loose shards of the mirror fell onto Kagome’s desk, Inuyasha looked back at the room, like it was a crime scene. He put her down on the barstool and reemerged from the bathroom with a bottle of disinfectant and a pair of tweezers. She wiped tears with the back of her hand, smearing blood onto her face a little bit. “Open your hands up, Kagome.” She did as told and watched as he pulled a few tiny pieces of glass from her skin and then cleaned the wounds with disinfectant. He was able to maneuver through the flowing blood and find shards of glass Kagome was surprised she could even see herself. They were so small, like slivers, but Inuyasha’s eyes were sharp. Once done he tenderly wrapped the white gauze over her hands and fastened them securely. “You’re pretty good at this,“ she hissed, wincing from the stings. “Yeah well, I got in a few fights with my older brother,” Inuyasha mumbled, turning his head to yawn as he continued wrapping her hands. “You’ll probably be healed by the time you wake up, but the bandages are just extra comfort.” She let out a long sigh and nodded, “I’m sorry I woke you up.” “Yeahm yeah,” Inuyasha yawned again while standing, holding his hand out to her, “Let’s go.” “Go where?” Inuyasha groaned and snatched her wrist, “We’re going to bed. We’ll clean up the mirror in the morning. You’re not going in there, stepping on glass, and waking me up so I can pull the glass out of your big feet.” She followed, more like she was dragged, until ungracefully tossed onto the left side of his bed. While Kagome had made it to the doorway of his room she’d never been inside or explored; she suddenly felt as if she’d invaded Inuyasha’s last sanctuary away from Kagome. “Are…Are you sure this is…I can sleep on the couch.” Inuyasha collapsed into his pillow on the right side, picked up the blanket from the floor he’d tossed aside sprinting to her door, and threw it over the two of them. “Just shut up and let me sleep, Kagome. I don’t want to have to worry about you,” he mumbled, patting her head gently before rolling over. “We can talk in the morning…but I’m…right here…” and with that, Inuyasha was asleep again. She took one last look at him before laying her head down on his bare mattress, staring at his back, rising and falling with his breathing. “Just me…just Kagome.” - - - - - - By the time morning came Kagome found the sheets half-draped across the two of them. As her eyes adjusted to the Sunday morning light, she realized she was on top of Inuyasha. His arm was draped across her back, holding her close, and her head resting at the center of his bare chest. Her body tensed and then relaxed. Though awake, she could hear and feel the Inuyasha was still asleep. Rotating just slightly, she turned so her eyes could scan the room. The room was barely furnished with a closet, bookshelf, desk, and wardrobe. The bookshelf was filled with different stacks of books and DVDS alike. A few button down shirts were hanging from the sides of the mirror and a basket held a mountain of unfolded clothes. There didn’t seem to be any significant photographs or posters in the room. Nothing seemed to scream out to her of family, but Kagome only had heard about a brother that Inuyasha didn’t seem too affectionate towards. The windows were open, the faintest breeze came through, and his ceiling fan hummed quietly with the morning. For what it was worth, it seemed pretty peaceful. She rubbed the corners of her eyes and turned to look back at Inuyasha. The chest she rested on was sprinkled with scars, none too big, but there. Glancing at her own scars, Inuyasha’s seemed like pricks, barely noticeable unless up close as she was. Despite his outward appearance, Kagome was a tiny bit impressed at his toned frame. The hand on her back slide up and touched the back of her head and she caught her breath. Looking up to his eyes, Kagome found they were still shut. She didn’t dare open her mouth to speak and instead rested her head back against his chest. With surprising delicacy his fingers treaded through her hair and rubbed at her scalp. She’d fall back asleep if she stayed this way, the horizon of his chest rising and falling with perfect time. Kagome reached out and twirled the ends of his long white mane, watching it coil around her finger with ease. “It’s like the snow...” she mumbled, blowing at the jagged ends of his hair, watching them lift and then fall to his side. Kagome shifted and lifted her head up causing Inuyasha’s hand to fall away onto the mattress. Face to face, Inuyasha seemed to sleep pretty peacefully. On occasion the pair of white triangular ears on his head would twitch, but other than that ---- Wait…white…ears? She shook her head and stared again. On the top of Inuyasha’s head was a pair of snowy white triangular ears. They looked like dog-ears. Had he been hiding his ears underneath his bandana all this time? These can’t be real…right? She reached out and touched once, watching it flick about as her fingers rubbed at the furry appendage. It sure feels real…they’re so soft and warm Inuyasha let out a growl and pressed his head against her hand like an eager dog wanting more affection. He definitely was acting like a dog. Kagome couldn’t help but smile and let out a small chuckle. She rubbed the ear again and felt his chest rumble. Kagome had known that Koga was a demon, so it wasn’t completely out of the realm of possibilities that Inuyasha could be one too…but why had he hid it from her? In her musing she continued to pet his ears until he frowned and shook his head slightly, “Come on, stop it.” She slowed her movements but pet him again with a playful tug. “Kikyo, cut it out,” he whined before rolling his head to the side. Kagome pulled her hand away and slowly crawled off Inuyasha. A small laugh escaped her lips as she rubbed the back of her head. Why did she suddenly feel sad, like part of the magic had been ruined? It wasn’t surprising that Kikyo and Inuyasha had their intimate gestures, but somehow it made Kagome feel dirty, like an imitation. But that had been the same thing with Koga…she thought back to the times she played with his hair and listened to him purr with delight. It was a soft and intimate thing that only she and him had… She unbound her hands and studied them. There wasn’t a single trace of the cuts from the night before. Kagome sighed and held them up to the light. This was the healing ability Kagome now had. To what extent the healing worked was unclear, considering the two scars that bared a heavy weight on her shoulders. With one last check that Inuyasha was still asleep Kagome rose and entered the kitchen. When he woke Inuyasha would be grumpy and asking for breakfast, so she figured it’d be better to make it now while it was quiet. - - - Inuyasha’s nose twitched at the smell of food cooking in the kitchen. With a groan he stretched his arms up over his shoulders and opened his eyes. His bed still had the lingering scent of Kagome and the more he woke up the more of last night came back to his mind. The covers were rumpled up in a ball and with a yawn Inuyasha rolled over and planted his feet on the ground. “Kagome?” he called out through the empty doorway. “Yeah? I’m in the kitchen,” she called back to him after the sound of a cupboard closing. “Good that you’re up, food’s ready.” Inuyasha flicked his ears and touched them. She probably knew by now, right? She hadn’t screamed or thrown things, so that was good, right? Inuyasha sighed and scratched the back of his head. He looked through the doorway at her back at the stove. She was still in pajamas, with the addition of a simple sports bra. The camisole was a light pink, the pajama bottoms short and a periwinkle kind of blue. From here he could see the tops of her scars that curved over the shoulder. Her hair was a little messy, maybe combed through with her hands, but nothing more than that. She turned around holding two bowls of ramen. The kitchen counter was already covered with sliced apples and two cups of orange juice. “Morning,” she said quietly, sliding a bowl towards him, plunking a spoon into the bowl too. He pulled up the stool beside her, but neither seemed to say much. The sound of the soup slurps and apple crunches filled the almost unbearable quiet of the air. She took a sip of her orange juice before turning to him and smiling. “Look,” she said, holding up her hands, “You were right, the cuts are gone.” Inuyasha smiled and felt a wave of relief wash over him, “Keh, I told you they would.” “The glass is already cleaned up, had to walk it down the stairs though, Kaede really should fix our elevator,” she mused before picking up another apple slice to eat. Inuyasha slurped his soup, “What time did you even wake up? You are usually not this good in the morning.” “About an hour ago,” she mumbled, pushing his shoulder, “I suck in the mornings, bite me.” “Most days you want to bite me,” he chuckled, finishing off his soup. He walked his bowl to the sink and turned around to find her staring at him. “What? Is there something on my damn face?” She shook her head. “If you have something to say, just damn say it.” “How long were you going to hide it from me?” she asked quietly, pointing with her spoon to the pair of ears on his head. “I’ve been around demons before, you know that. Koga is ---“ “I know he’s a damn wolf demon,” Inuyasha barked, refusing to say that bastard’s name in this house. “You were attacked by demons, I didn’t think you wanted too much to do with them!” Kagome shook her head, “So that’s why you…and the blood. God I knew I had demon blood, and I know you said it was from you, but you never just flat out said it.” Her cerulean eyes stared him down, golden back at hers, “So what are you not telling me? I feel like there’s a piece missing here, most demons don’t hide it…” “Because I ain’t a damn demon!” Inuyasha barked back at her, clenching his fists, ears flattening on his head. “….not a full one, anyway.” She tilted her head, “You’re not…a full demon? What does that mean?” “I am a half-demon,” he sighed. “My mother was a human and my father was a inu-yokai. So I have half the power…” “And what, you wanted to pass as a human?” “It’s not that easy, Kagome! Full demons hate half-demons like me, hanyous. It’s easier to get along with humans because they ain’t trying to kick my ass all the time.” She approached him cautiously, and on the tops of her toes, scratched his drooped sad ears, “But your ears are so cute.” Trying his best not to purr he glared at her, “Oh yeah, kick the cute and fuzzy half-demon, all the more reason for them to think I’m a weakling.” “So how come I don’t have them?” she asked gently, rubbing them still, watching his face relax a tiny bit. “Am I a…half-demon then…too?” “No, you’re…you’re a bigger weirdo than I am, keh.” Inuyasha smirked, looking down at her. It was the first time in the apartment she’d let her scars be seen. While they were entirely healed, they still radiated the sorrow attached with the memories. He put his hands on her shoulders and smiled, “I guess you’re a quarter of a demon, or something, because I only gave you a sample of my blood. It’s different if you ain’t mated to the person.” She nodded slowly, “The doctor said there is another blood in me too, the priestess blood, mikos.” “It’s why you’re having problems adjusting. The two are like ying and yang.” “Then who’s in my head all the time?” Kagome mused, letting her hands slide from his ears into his white locks of hair. “That would probably be your beast, kind of comes as a package with the demon blood. Consider the…instinctual side of you, just now it talks.” “Can she…take control?” Inuyasha nodded slowly, “It happens. We battle for control all the time. It’s just…” “So why does she want to seal me up?” “Keh, cause she’s a psycho?” he subconsciously was aware that his thumbs were drawing small circles on her shoulders. “I’m not sure. I don’t…I’m not an expert on this. There ain’t many of us hanyou…plus you have that other blood. You’re just super weird.” “Oh, thanks, sweet of you to say,” she stuck out her tongue at him and yanked on his hair playfully. “Damnit that hurt, woman!” Inuyasha growled, releasing her and backing up. “I need a shower. Not awake yet…” he bit back a yawn and headed to the bathroom. “Fine…but Inuyasha?” He stopped at the door and looked back at her, “What?” “You don’t have to hide it from me, okay?” She pointed to the top of her own head. “Don’t keep secrets from me?” He waved his hand over his shoulder and turned into the bathroom, “Yeah, yeah, I hear ya. But in return, no wearing damn turtlenecks in the summer. You make me sweat just looking at ya.” The door clicked behind him. - - - - Kagome had just finished putting on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt when there was a knock at the front door. To her surprise, Kikyo stood in front of her, dressed in a business casual pant and suit combo. “Where is Inuyasha?” Kikyo asked calmly, not an ounce of emotion revealed on her face. Kagome forced a smile, “He’s just taking a shower.” She stepped to the side and gestured for the woman to enter. “He’ll probably be out in a minute.” Kikyo entered, her heels clicking against the floor. She held a small purse in front of her and scanned the room. “What are you doing here?” Kagome nearly gawked, what a rude question to just ask of her? “I live here, Kikyo-san.” Her own voice bit back with the same icy tone Kikyo was using. Kikyo’s eyes narrowed as she watched Kagome clear the dishes from their morning’s breakfast. “Why?” “Is that really any of your business?” Kagome asked calmly, scraping crumbs into the garbage can. “It is my business,” Kikyo countered. “My life is your business?” Kagome chuckled, placing the dishes into the sink in a neat stack. She turned back to her and crossed her arms, “No, it really isn’t.” “Inuyasha and I are involved. You think it is appropriate to live in the same apartment as him?” Kikyo sighed disapprovingly and sat on the stool Inuyasha had previously occupied. Kagome sprayed dish soap into the sink and turned on the water. “Inuyasha and I have mutual friends and a mutual understanding of that. Don’t be so intimidated by me,” she growled. “I am hardly intimidated by the likes of you.” Kikyo’s voice had slightly risen at this point; Kagome could finally identify anger seeping from the girl. Kagome noted an outline around the girl’s figure; there was a faint pink glow to the angry girlfriend. “Really? Why else would you be so interested in my little life? You haven’t heard of co-ed roommates?” Kagome couldn’t help but be angry. Inuyasha stuck out his neck and helped Kagome when she needed someone, anyone, and Kikyo is yelling at her? Really? “You obviously do not have any moral decency to respect the concerns of others.” Kagome growled, gripping the counter as she glared, “Yet here you are, barging into the home I live in, chastising me for living here? Where is your respect?” Little did Kagome know her own body was beginning to outline in the same pink as Kikyo. Kikyo noticed it though, her eyes narrowing further. So this girl had powers as well? “I’ve been a part of his life longer than you. As I recall, you were no one special.” A wicked grin spread across her face, fangs sticking out, “And yet here I am, living here, with my own key with Inuyasha. What does that say about you precious girlfriend?” Kikyo’s aura spiked but Kagome did not flinch. She stood her ground and glared at the woman across the table. “No honorifics even, are you such a lowly tramp, then? Have you already attempted to seduce him?” What happened next surprised even Kikyo, even if she would never vocalize that; Kagome’s aura exploded across the room. Like a wild fire the cerulean-eyed woman let out a low growl. “You dare to accuse such things of me and Inuyasha? I am no lover to any man and Inuyasha has done nothing but extended a hand when I needed his help. He has been nothing but kind to me. I dare you to accuse me of something again.” Kikyo stood slowly and picked up her purse from the counter. She opened the front door and looked back at the girl with the wildfire aura. “Tell Inuyasha I stopped by but was rushed out by a rude verbal lashing from a very barbaric young woman.” “You may wait here for Inuyasha, truly, but remember that I do not have to open the door for you, ever. Next time you can stand outside and wait for him to open the door for you.” Kikyo scoffed, “I have no desire to be near a wild woman such as yourself.” She slammed the door shut after her. “Oye, what was that? It felt like the house was shaking!” Inuyasha shouted as he kicked the bathroom door open, a yukata wrapped around his frame. “Kagome, what’s wrong?” Kagome was taking deep breaths, trying to calm down, as the pink aura around her was slowly roped in. “Nothing, Inuyasha.” She turned back to him with a smile, “Kikyo-san stopped by, but she got called out again by work. She said to tell you she was here.” Kagome was smiling through her teeth, so furious at the woman. But she didn’t want to cause any problems for Inuyasha. “Damnit, she always comes and goes,” Inuyasha sighed and ruffled Kagome’s hair. “Thanks. I’ll just call her later.” “Is she your girlfriend, Inuyasha?” she asked calmly, looking at the stool where Kikyo had just been. Inuyasha looked at the door and shrugged his shoulders, “It’s kind of complicated.” “Nana-chan…said that…there was a story about it…” He raised an eyebrow at her and Kagome waved her hands in front of her quickly, “She didn’t tell me. She told me it wasn’t her place. And I, um, I didn’t mean to pry, just…” "Good, cause it ain't any of the boss lady's business gossiping about me." Inuyasha noticed the orange juice on the counter and put it away, "I ain't mad at ya. Nana just doesn't like Kikyo." "But...why? Nana-chan seems so relaxed with everyone!" Inuyasha rolled his eyes, "No one can be not-relaxed around you. You were such a doofus when you first came into the cafe, remember? She just likes to bust my chops about shit." "Oh, I see," Kagome sighed and stared at the floor. If only Kagome could tell Inuyasha how much Kikyo already didn't seem to like her. "Kikyo and I had been together for a long time and then two years ago she just up and disappeared from here, from Japan, and stuff," Inuyasha sighed and scratched his own ear. "She just came back recently." "So things are picking up where they left off?" she forced a smile. "Kind of. It's slow going with her always coming and going. She's quiet about where she works, but she's always been that way." "Well. Hopefully when Koga comes back, he and I can pick up where we left off, just like you and Kikyo are." "Yeah...hopefully." Never seemed convinced as they parted ways to their own rooms. Kagome pulled open a sketchpad and flipped to a page half-finished. It was of Koga's face, the pained look she remembered the night they'd separated. She wondered if Inuyasha's face had seemed this pained as well. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
