Chapter 7
Mere specks on the endless expanse of grass and wildflowers below, Sesshoumaru descended upon the Inutachi, his brother stopping dead in his tracks to sniff the sweet air, his expression souring at the taint of his elder brother's scent.
Kagome, her mind clearly elsewhere, bumped into him, searching the sky for what he detected. "What is it, InuYasha?"
The words no sooner left her lips when the Lord of the West appeared before them, alighting elegantly on the ground, Toukijin hanging harmlessly at his side. Hopefully that would be olive branch enough. He didn't have time for a pointless scuffle.
"Ack! Sesshoumaru!" cried their little red-haired pet. They were already off to a great start.
It wasn't like Sesshoumaru to try the diplomatic method—he was a man of action—but the circumstances called for him to take an altogether different approach. He couldn't just run up and snatch Kagome; a fight would doubtlessly ensue. A useless fight that would take up precious time, time he did not have. He locked eyes with the half-breed he long loathed to call his flesh and blood, stone-faced even in his urgency.
"Whadda you want?" InuYasha glared, his hand white-knuckled around Tetsusaiga's hilt.
"The girl," he answered plainly.
"What? You mean Kagome?"
"The Wind Witch requires her aid."
Kagome stepped from the tightly huddled group, ahead of the hanyou, brown mortal eyes twinkling as they did when showing concern. "What happened?" she asked, alarm in her voice. "Is she okay?"
"It must be serious if Sesshoumaru came all this way himself," the taijiya whispered to the monk, as if he couldn't hear.
"Kagura is still in his ward, I see," the monk added a little louder, no effort made to hush his words. He was a smart man, educated. Clearly he knew any such strides would be wasted on the inuyoukai's superior hearing.
"Whatever it is, Kagome ain't goin nowhere with you!" InuYasha, naturally, was being less rational.
Sesshoumaru resisted the urge to roll his eyes, comically or otherwise. He had not the time to waste. "I was not asking your permission."
"If it's all the same to you, I ain't givin it!" he growled, drawing Tetsusaiga from its sheath. Sesshoumaru in turn reached for Toukijin. If that was how he wanted to play, fine. He would quickly put him in his place, grab the girl and be on his way.
But the girl was quick to do it for him, InuYasha crashing to the ground as gracelessly as he would have attacked him. Ridiculous, how shameful to be subjugated my a mere human girl… not that he did not know the feeling, to a somewhat lesser degree, every time Rin bestowed him with a crown or necklace of brightly colored blooms… but this was no time to think of that. "Let's all calm down now," his wench proceeded to say, her hands held up as if in surrender.
Again, he curbed the urge to roll his eyes, sharpening them on the group. "I haven't time for this nonsense."
The girl bent down beside her would-be paramour, her brows knitting as if in remorse for what she'd done in front of his brother. "Kagura's not who she used to be." She leaned close, hand cupping her mouth against one twitching doggie ear. "And neither is Sesshoumaru," she whispered. "This is totally out of character for him, openly seeking our help. Something is terribly wrong, I can just feel it."
InuYasha was on his feet before she could say anymore, wobbly but determined to waste more time. "What do you care what happens to Kagura anyway?" he barked in the direction of his elder half-brother, folding his arms across his chest.
In all his inherent calculation, he had not expected an interrogation. "She has something that belongs to me," he answered at last.
"Keh, he don't seem all that different to me. Sounds like the Sesshoumaru I've always known: always after something." InuYasha scoffed, leaning on one hip.
"It doesn't matter." Kagome shook her head, adjusting the big yellow bag on her shoulder as she started toward him. "I'm going with him."
"What?" The cur dropped his arms to his sides in defeat. "You can't be serious!"
Sesshoumaru restrained the urge to breathe a sigh of relief, even if just barely, eyeing the girl as she came near. "Do you have all you require? Medicines, bandages-?"
"I have everything I need." She nodded, more for the benefit of the wary gazes of her friends than his. "Take me to her."
No more words, no more time wasted. Just blue-white light and his orb shooting off into the distance.
They arrived at camp mere moments later, Kagome clearly jolted by their sudden presence in a new place. By a well-burning campfire sat Rin and Jaken, laying between them his heavily pregnant and apparently unconscious lady. The girl gulped air at such a sight, turning from the smear of blood stretching just past her painted lips to the side of her face, more on the front of her kimono, just above her right breast.
"Naraku did this," Sesshoumaru offered dimly.
"Sesshoumaru." She whirled toward the ailing woman, then back. "Didn't Kagura tell you about the, uh, charms I gave her?"
"Yes." He furrowed his brow perplexedly.
She returned the expression, brown eyes wide. "Did she tell you what they were for?"
Why did she waste his time with such nonsense? He would not entertain one question more. "Yes," he nodded, narrowing his eyes on her.
Kagome stared blankly, her jaw open, squeaks emanating instead of sound or words.
"There is no time to discuss this now." He passed her, his white figure drifting like a specter to his lady's side.
"Right." Kagome gave an emphatic nod, following close behind. She set up on the side opposite Sesshoumaru, kneeling carefully in her schoolgirl skirt, her bag deposited close by. Rin and Jaken quickly made room for her to work her magic, the child dragging the imp to the other side of the fire. Sesshoumaru watched as she rummaged through the bulky yellow bag, his head lowered if only to better view them from his towering height. She drew out a white box with a red cross on the front and a handle at the top, two amber-colored cylindrical containers with white caps set atop it.
"Sesshoumaru," she jarred him out of his brief reverie, thoughts swirling in his mind yet again of all that led him here. "What is the nature of her symptoms?"
"She…" He found himself speaking haltingly, something he'd never done in his life. If he said the words, would it make it true? Was she dying? "She has difficulty breathing."
"Through her nose, or in general?" She averted her eyes from his, as if something in his expression caused her pain, continuing to sift through her bag, a small beige object with a green rectangular box at one fat end and a silver nub at the opposite skinny end withdrawn and placed in Kagura's mouth, fat end out. The crackly moan to follow gave him pause, gilded eyes drifting reluctantly down to where Kagome held the object in place. She pushed on a tiny depressed area next to the green box, the object letting out a small chirp, slowly lifting her eyes to his. "Sesshoumaru-"
"Both." He dipped to his rear, the one to avert his eyes this time, watching Kagura's pallid face. "And she expels blood when she coughs." He pointed to the smear of blood at the corner of her mouth, unable but to let his fingers trail along her cheek. "As you can see."
There was a long pause where she said nothing, the metallic chirp of the object prompting her to pull it away, frowning at whatever the little green box showed her. "How far along is she?"
Sesshoumaru merely stared, too transfixed by what may very well be his lady's last moments to pay her inquiry any mind.
But still, she pressed. "Sesshoumaru," she said gently. "It's okay, I'm here to help."
He swallowed solemnly, lifting his eyes but for an instant. "The child should come any time now."
"Listen." She closed the strange object back into its case, one of the cylindrical containers giving a rattle as she picked it up. "She has a terrible fever, but I have something that may help with that. I need to get a look at that wound." She dropped the object she fisted, reaching hesitantly across Kagura's body, her eyes now firmly locked with his.
"As you must," he nodded.
She carefully untied her obi, opening her once pretty layers on the wound soaking through. Surrounding the abscess were remnants of bleeding and seepage, yellow pus pocketed in the center.
"This is badly infected," she sneered, looking up almost in horror. "Why didn't you come for me sooner?"
Didn't she think he wanted to? She obviously understood the gravity of the situation or she wouldn't have so willingly offered her assistance… unless she was a fool. Either way, he would not dignify such ignorance with a response, merely staring, until she herself got the message.
"Never mind… I know. Well." She wiped her hands on a clean cloth, at last opening the white box. "I always keep antibiotics on hand as a just-in-case measure, topical and pill form, so… I'll start her on those immediately."
"Antibiotics?"
"Yeah." She looked up at him with unsure eyes. "They fight infection."
"Good." He was a captive audience again, watching as she withdrew yet more strange materials from her world from the box. "Begin." She brought out a long, triangular, and apparently quite malleable, object, fumbling through bandages and such in order to tend to Kagura's wound. She unscrewed the top to the triangular tube and squeezed a clear gooey substance out onto a clean bandage, applying it as far inside the open sore as she could, spreading some around it for good measure. Life came to the lady's face in a wince, her eyelids fluttering and then opening wide.
"She's awake!" came Rin's voice, the girl crawling nearer.
"Unh, what's-" Kagura groaned, her eyes darting around the campsite, stopping on the girl leaning over her. "Kagome?"
"Kagura." She sat back, smiling faintly, the once clean bandage still clutched in her hand, now soiled with blood and yellowish goo. "How are you feeling?"
"I've been better," she rasped, lids drooping, the corners of her mouth turned up slightly. "How did you get here? Did Sesshoumaru bring you?"
"Yes." She nodded, raising her eyes to the daiyoukai. "He asked me to help you."
Kagura turned her head, eyes landing at last on her lord. "Sesshoumaru." She struggled to breathe. "My love."
Sesshoumaru leaned forward and looked into his lady's fading fuchsia eyes, his hand absently grasping hers. "Kagura."
Kagura let her head fall straight, staring dimly into the hazy gray above. "I'm dying, aren't I?"
The sun peeked through the clouds then, the slice of blue it revealed mocking them and their plight. He couldn't reply, couldn't tell her she was right, couldn't admit he knew. Instead he remained lost in her eyes, squeezing the hand weakly holding his.
She blinked lazily, indifferent to the sun casting over her pale features, her free hand drifting to her stomach. "I wanted to have you an heir. I'd have you a hundred if it only meant I could see your face every day." Tears welled in her eyes, Kagura refusing to let them fall, crimson slowly shifting to gold. "Forever."
Kagome's, on the other hand, flowed freely, spilling down her cheeks, glimmering droplets falling to the ground below.
Sesshoumaru squeezed his lady's hand, his head falling in the least defeated way he could manage to the one laying where their child yet grew; her palm turning to his crescent moon, his cheek to her hand. "The child is strong in my blood. It may be the very thing keeping you alive."
She took her hand from beneath his cheek, unsteady fingers brushing back his snow-colored fringe, the child's movement fluttering against his face. His hand slid from hers, palm curving with that of her belly as he laid it beside his head.
Her hold on her tears began to falter. She knew what he felt; she could feel it too. "You are keeping me alive as well."
"Would you use your Jewel shard to save her?"
Kagome lifted her head with a start, shaking it as she stammered out an answer. "But, Sesshoumaru, I have no more Jewel shards."
Sesshoumaru likewise lifted his head, sitting up, his hand still connected with his child's erratic movements. "What?"
"I have no more Jewel shards. We used the last one to fortify Tetsusaiga in the oni's belly and it got destroyed. Whatever dust remained Naraku surely has by now."
This was most unsatisfying. No, displeasing. No, worse. Sesshoumaru looked to once lively crimson eyes, the reflection of his defeat settling sour in his gut.
"Well, there's always Tenseiga," Kagura noted in a vermilion-laced cough.
"Yes, Lord Sesshoumaru." Rin rose between them. "You could always revive her the way you did me."
"Why don't you just use Tenseiga should she pass, milord?" Jaken asked the question that had been burning on all their tongues.
"Because, I should not have to." He lifted his lady's clammy hand to his kiss. "Not yet." He lay his head back down, palm resting beside it, all the power and the will he had in his possession focused on bolstering hers. Do not give up, my lady. Do not give up on her, my child. "Although, if Naraku has all the remaining shards, I may have to resort to it."
Kagome perked up. "Naraku doesn't have all the remaining shards."
All eyes went to her, the girl slouching under the weight of their collective gaze.
"No?" Sesshoumaru quirked a brow. "Then who possesses them besides Naraku?"
"Kouga. He has two, one in each leg."
The daiyoukai got to his feet, leaving his lady with a pat to her hand. "Kouga, you say?"
"He won't give them up easily." Kagome absentmindedly wrung her hands around one of the amber-colored containers.
"It makes no matter. I only need borrow one, and then I have no care what happens to it."
"Lord Sesshoumaru." Jaken skittered closer. "What is it you plan to do with the shard once you've obtained it."
"I will embed it in the lady; her youkai blood should be given rise and heal her, curing her of all ailments, allowing her to be strong enough to bear my child. At which point, I will have no use for the shard and shall return it... Or discard it, depending on whether its owner still lives once I acquire it."
Kagome swallowed hard at that, but Sesshoumaru paid her weak human stomach no mind, his lady tugging at his hakama.
"Sesshoumaru, don't leave me," she pleaded. "I want you to be with me should I die. You can revive me, and with no harm to the baby, I'm sure. As you said, it is strong in your blood."
He bent down, his face hovering close, almost as if teasing a kiss. "I will not allow it. You do not know what will happen. It is not worth the risk—to either of you."
She drew a ragged breath, searching his gilded eyes. She knew he spoke the truth. "Come back soon, my lord. My love." Her voice broke on the final word, the final but, Tenseiga be damned, not the last. Tremulous lips touched his cheek, sticking to his skin an instant, still tacky with blood and spittle.
"I will." He smiled tightly, turning to the others. "Kagome, give her these antibiotics you spoke of. If her condition deteriorates beyond repair, send Jaken or Rin to ride Ah-Un and find me at once."
"Okay," she nodded hesitantly.
Sesshoumaru turned once more to his lady and the two original members of his little cadre. He looked them over, their fearful faces etching themselves into his mind. He righted himself once more, beginning to walk from them, bright blue-white light enveloping him. And then, he was gone, his energy an electrified azure streak across the cerulean skies.
