Chapter 11 - Home is where the hanyou is
The next morning, Inuyasha awoke before the sun, though he remained still to let Kagome sleep in for as long as possible. They would need to get up and get dressed before any of the workers at the Inn spotted them together, but breakfast wouldn't be served for a couple of hours yet. Just as the first sign of dawn was making its presence known on the eastern horizon, Inuyasha's ears swivled to catch the unexpected sound of Sango approaching their room, no doubt wanting to switch places with him again before the maids came calling. He wasn't sure which one of them was more embarassed as he blushed crimson while she stuttered through apologies, her arival instantly stirring Kagome who woke in time for her heightened sense of smell to catch Sango's scent as the taijiya scrambled to slide the door back closed. Blushing herself, Kagome could definitely relent that it was much better to get caught by one of their friends than one of the local villagers, and she and Inuyasha quickly got dressed. By the time the local serving girl did her rounds rousing the guests for breakfast nothing seemed out of the ordinary, all members of the inu-tachi already up and outside, enjoying the peaceful morning air.

With no new leads to possible activity by Naraku or a jewel shard, the gang decided to head back towards Kaede's village, although they took a different route just in case some of the villages nestled along the way had heard of anything.
It didn't take long for Sango and Miroku to find out why Kagome and Inuyasha had been busted in bed together naked - naked being the operative word since the hanyou had already shared her sleeping bag once before. Miroku could actually sense the change in Kagome, which prompted him to tease the couple once they were out of earshot of the village. Asking in his typical, lecherous way if anything of interest had happened between them the night before, he didn't miss the way the hanyou and miko both blushed crimson, although his fiancée's reddened cheeks caught him by surprise, since Sango had initially wanted to keep what had happened a secret between the three of them for their friends' sakes. But at the monk's words, everyone was surprised when Inuyasha immediately came clean about what had happened between he and his mate, wanting to get it out in the open to defend that he wasn't as much of a pervert as the letch, as if he had simply been unable to keep his hands to himself and that'd been the end of it. He made sure the others all knew about the bond that he and Kagome had completed, and thanks to said bond, Kagome could sense how embarrassed Inuyasha actually was to discuss such things openly, despite his outward indifference, and so she took no offense at the backhanded way he had inadvertently insulted her desirability. It also wasn't true. He really would have a hard time keeping his hands to himself, now that the two of them were bonded, especially when her fertile time perked up which was due to approach in another few days, but he would deal with it to the best of his ability. He wouldn't have much of a choice.
Sango and Miroku were surprised to learn that they had actually gone forward with something as rare and important as the soul-bond, but as the duo thought about it a while longer, neither of them were honestly in that much disbelief. They both knew how deeply Inuyasha and Kagome both loved one another. A love that was put to the test sooner than would have been preferred when one of the villages they stopped at on the way home had a miko who could sense the bond and immediately knew precisely what kind of a relationship Kagome and Inuyasha shared. Not only were the inu-tachi very rudely asked to leave, but for the very first time Kagome experienced her own round of whispered insults...as well as some spoken quite a bit louder. She was not only called a dark miko and a youkai's whore to her face by the local miko who so very obviously did not approve of her relationship with a hanyou, but as the elderly woman's disparaging words were heard by some of the other villagers, whispers of 'deviant', 'slut' and 'betrayer' reached her ears as they made their hasty departure.
Inuyasha was inconsolable for a good half hour afterwards until Kagome finally got him to look at her by yanking on his sidelocks. Every time she'd murmured his name in the hopes of starting up a conversation about what had happened he had barked back with something along the lines of "Forget it." or "I'm fine." all the while secretly berating himself for the kind of life he had condemned Kagome to, wondering if perhaps he hadn't made a mistake, though of course it was much too late to worry about that. But he hadn't thought about holy persons who would be able to sense the soul-bond. He'd thought that so long as they kept up appearances of merely being acquaintances, then everything would be fine. Kagome of course could sense every single drop of doubt and self-loathing that washed through him, knowing damn well that he was not fine, which was really starting to piss her off. Of course, she also figured he could probably sense her ire just as she could sense his dejection, and knowing him, he probably either thought that she was mad at the villagers for their cruel words - which a part of her was, but that was beside the point - or even worse, she worried he might stupidly think she was mad at him, which of course couldn't be farther from the truth.
Finally getting his attention by yanking on his hair until he turned to look at her, Inuyasha barely had time to bark out a harsh, "What?!" before he was immediately silenced by the unexpected sensation of Kagome pressing her lips against his own. He immediately blushed down to his toes as his ears swiveled to pick up Miroku's quiet snickering, but he didn't pull away, and when Kagome finally released him and backed up, she smiled up at him with the truest smile he'd ever seen her wear, before she made him laugh with the simplest of all declarations.
"Screw them."
Grinning despite himself, Inuyasha shook his head a bit in disbelief, muttering in mock worry that Kagome was turning into him, to which she Keh'd which earned her a second chuckle. Feeling confident that he hadn't ruined Kagome's life after all, when his mate made a reach for his hand, Inuyasha eagerly accepted, once again walking hand in hand with the miko as they made their way down to the road to the next village, Miroku and Sango's approving smirks and whispers politely going ignored.
```````````````````````````
Inuyasha's mood stayed pleasant well into the next day, when their stop at the next village along their route remained incident free, although every member of the inu-tachi was a little disappointed that that village also didn't have any news of any unusual activity in the nearby area that could possibly lead to Naraku. The dark hanyou had been in hiding for quite some time now, which was never a good sign. There were still a few hours left of sunlight, so deciding another night indoors wasn't worth losing valuable travel time, the inu-tachi pressed onward.
Finally deciding to camp for the night in a secure location only a few more hours journey from Kaede's village, a lack of prey in the immediate area meant that dinner that night would have to consist exclusively of ramen, not that a certain hanyou was complaining. Settling himself down near Kagome's side as she tended to the fire, Inuyasha took a deep, relaxing breath, only to nearly choke as an unexpected and unwanted scent hit his nose.
Ah, shit... he grumbled to himself, cringing when Kagome immediately sent him a confused and worried glance.
"I'll tell you later." he whispered quietly enough so that only she would hear him, Shippou's current chatter with Miroku ensuring that the kitsune had missed the exchange.
Dinner was awkward for Kagome since she could sense her mate's anxiety whenever she got too close, although she couldn't for the life of her figure out why...at least at first. Collecting his empty ramen cup, she couldn't miss the shudder of desire that traveled through him as her hand brushed against his, and her eyes quickly widened in understanding. She could sense it in that moment, how badly he wanted her, yet at the same time how badly he also wanted to avoid her; that could only mean one thing.
"Kagome..." he began quietly about an hour later, when everyone started settling themselves down for the night. He was desperately trying to figure out how to explain, and how to apologize for not being able to hold her in her sleep like how he so desperately wanted to do.
"We'll reach the well by tomorrow afternoon," she answered softly, adding in understanding, "I'll tell Mama I need to get those 'herbs' we talked about right away."
Sighing in relief that she understood, he muttered a quiet "Keh" before bounding up into the nearest tree. He wanted to sleep with Kagome, but her scent was just too damn tempting at the moment, and even with their friends all being right there he feared that the night might lead to more than sleep if he lost control of himself. He was half inu-youkai, and sometimes his canine instincts simply got the better of him. He was grateful that Kagome understood that and didn't think he was perverted because of it. He would do his best to avoid having to disappear into the woods for a few minutes to releive his stress, but even if it came to that, something told him that Kagome wouldn't be bothered by that, either.
Keh, if it was just the two of us, I'd ask her to give me a hand with my problem...literally.
Well those types of thoughts certainly wouldn't help the situation any. Grumbling to himself, Inuyasha dug his claws into the wood of his perch. It was going to be a long night.
```````````````````````````
They arrived back in Kaede's village right on schedule the following afternoon, and without delay Kagome announced that she needed to go home for a couple of days. Nobody questioned it when Inuyasha walked with her to the well, fully intent on accompanying the young miko into the future. Despite what she still thought of her own part in all of this thanks to that gods awful tea, Inuyasha was fully prepared to take all of the blame himself, if it turned out her family was angered by the news of their joining. Kagome had no intention of telling anyone about Miroku's tea, and told Inuyasha during their brief trek to the well that her plan of action was to just confess to her mother that the two of them had confessed their love to one another, and then...one thing just sort of led to another. It was the least embarrassing scenario, and one that gave both she and Inuyasha equal blame, which he reluctantly agreed seemed fair, despite still privately believing that he was to blame for their initial joining. If not for the intimate act itself, then certainly for the fact that he had marked her as his mate without first discussing it with the girl. Kagome also told him they wouldn't be admitting that little tidbit, either, stating how there was no point in going over how she had temporarily been his 'claimed' property mate, or whatever it was called in inu-youkai society. The truth was that he had explained to her, in detail, everything about the soul-bond before she had agreed and they had completed the act; that was all her mother needed to know. Kagome had known going in what it would mean to become Inuyasha's soul mate, and she did not regret her decision.
Now all she had to do was not lose her bravado between the well-house and the front door, she thought to herself in growing nervousness as she and Inuyasha emerged on her side of time and slowly made the trek up to her family's home.
Come on, Kagome, you look like dead-miko-walking or something... she scolded herself, only to cringe at the unintentional pun. But it was true that she felt like she was exuding guilt, a sensation her mate quickly picked up on as he reached over and gave her hand a quick squeeze.
"No matter what, I'm here." he told her quietly just before she slid the door open.
"Hopefully I'm worrying over nothing." she whispered to him before calling out into the house with a loud and forcefully joyful, "Tadaima!"
"Kagome!" immediately came her mother's voice from the kitchen, although both miko and hanyou had already known the elder Higurashi woman's location thanks to their sense of smell.
Entering the kitchen, the fifteen-year-old immediately lost her nervousness, finally understanding what Inuyasha had told her a couple of times in the past, that her mother reminded him of his own. He must have been referring to the natural way in which her presence soothed and comforted. She smelled like a mother, and immediately, Kagome was no longer nervous about what she had to confess.
"Mama..." she began with a genuine smile on her face, reaching to her side to grasp a started Inuyasha's hand, giving it a squeeze of her own. "Inuyasha and I have something to tell you."
Grinning in a knowing, all-seeing, motherly way, Mrs. Higurashi put down the dish she was washing and turned to give both her daughter and her daughter's companion her undivided attention.
Seeing her smile only relaxed Kagome all the more, as she began telling her mother everything, or at least the 'everything' that she had decided to tell. If Mrs. Higurashi could sense that her daughter was leaving out a few of the details she let it go without question, not particularly interested in embarrassing her daughter or the poor red-faced boy standing beside her by asking for those types of details, anyway. It didn't take Kagome long to finish with her tale, and the first question out of her mother's mouth was if she was planning on staying in the past, to which the miko immediately, albeit a bit apprehensively, admitted that she was. She was relieved all over again when her mother waved off her concerns, telling her daughter that while they would all miss her dearly, she had known from the very first moment Inuyasha had barged into their kitchen to drag her back into the past that Kagome's destiny was with the inu-hanyou in his world. Said hanyou shyly told his mate's mother in that moment that he would provide for Kagome, and that she had nothing to worry about. He also acknowledged that Kagome had told him that in her time, wedding ceremonies weren't just for nobility, and that he would gladly honor their traditions by partaking in such a custom, officially marrying the girl in whatever ritual they deemed fit. Mrs. Higurashi beamed at those words, having been nervous for a moment about how her father-in-law would take the news of Kagome running off with Inuyasha. If they were properly wed in the eyes of the kami that would surely appease the old priest. The next subject to be brought up was of course children, which Kagome had been just about to mention herself before her mother beat her to it, asking with a bit of motherly worry in her voice what their plans were for parenthood. Kagome assured her mother in that moment that she had every intention of finishing her schooling before disappearing from their time forever - assuming it was forever, if the well didn't permit her to return for the occasional visit after purifying the jewel - and she knew there was absolutely no way she could show up at school pregnant. To do so would be an even bigger dishonor than dropping out of school altogether. As for Inuyasha's side of things, he was content to wait as long as necessary to start a family, bringing up his own concerns of needing to defeat Naraku, because there was no way in all the hells he was allowing his breeding mate to go traipsing across the countryside in search of the dark hanyou. It was then that Kagome awkwardly broached the subject of going on birth control, which just as Inuyasha had previously chuckled privately to himself, was more or less her way of admitting she had every intention of continuing to engage in intimate relations with him, despite the fact that they weren't yet ready to settle down and start a family. To her credit, Kagome's mother only smirked at her daughter's crimson cheeks, before agreeing that it was a very wise decision to take such a precaution.
"I'll make you a doctor's appointment for first thing tomorrow."
"Thanks, Mama."
```````````````````````````
The rest of her family took the news of their mating as well as could be expected, meaning Souta nearly fainted from his excitement over getting the 'coolest brother-in-law ever' while Jii-chan grumbled something under his breath about how he wouldn't hesitate to purify Inuyasha if his darling granddaughter ever again came home in tears. Stunned by the fact that the old man hadn't actually just tried to purify him outright, he startled Kagome's grandfather by confronting him on the words he'd thought he'd muttered too quietly to be heard. He assured Mr. Higurashi that he had nothing to worry about, that he would never again say or do anything to ever cause Kagome the slightest amount of distress. Smiling to herself at his words from her spot in the other room, Kagome silently disagreed with her mate, figuring that it was only natural that they would still have an occasional fight or two from time to time. But she did believe that Inuyasha would never intentionally do anything to hurt her, and she vowed to herself in that moment that whatever upsets might possible spring up over their years together, she would always stay and listen to his side of things instead of just blindly running off in tears like she always used to do. She wasn't a little girl any more; she was a mated woman, soon to be married woman, and it was time to act accordingly.
Staying in Kagome's room that night was pure torture for Inuyasha, who could only deal with about an hour of sitting in his usual spot on the floor by her window before he was out said window, spending the rest of his night up on the roof. When Kagome awoke to find herself alone in her room, she sighed before heading over to her open window, mumbling a quiet good morning into the air. She wasn't startled when he immediately plopped down onto her windowsill from above, and she offered him a crooked smile and a light peck on the cheek as she apologized for her scent. She could actually smell the changes within her body herself, truth be told, though of course her own fragrance did not affect her the way it did Inuyasha, but she was not without her own vulnerability since his desire for her was causing his body to secrete pheromones of his own that in turn were affecting her, almost like a mini dose of Miroku's tea though it was thankfully weak enough that she could maintain control of her actions, as uncomfortable as it might be. All in all, it was a very...hot...car ride to the doctor's office. She mused they would each have to take their turn in a cold shower when they got back to the shrine.
Getting her prescription for birth control, Kagome hated to crush the hopeful look in her mate's eyes when she told him it would take a few months before the pills became fully effective. He playfully grumbled something about the things people did for love before telling Kagome she could have the next couple of days off to visit with her family in peace while he made sure Miroku didn't push his luck with the slayer. Chuckling, Kagome gave her mate a kiss before telling him she'd be back as soon as her fertile time ended.
As soon as Inuyasha jumped through the well, however, Kagome was immediately hit with the oddest sensation, almost reminiscent to the time when Kanna had been attacking her with that strange mirror of hers. It was almost too much to bear, as Kagome stumbled to take a seat at the kitchen table.
"Kagome!" her mother cried in alarm. "What's wrong, dear? You've gone completely pale. Are you all right?"
"I...I think so..." Kagome uttered faintly, "It feels weird, Mama, and scary, like half my soul's been ripped away."
Her mother gasped, instant understanding coming over her. Despite what they'd told her, she hadn't really thought about what it would mean to share a soul-bond with somebody.
"Inuyasha..." the miko mumbled more to herself, as she pushed herself away from the table, a hand kept on its surface to keep from losing her balance. "I've got to get to him..."
No sooner did she say that, though, did the feeling immediately subside, as color started returning to her cheeks.
"Kagome!" Inuyasha hollered as he ran into the kitchen.
Smiling in relief, Kagome allowed herself to collapse into her mate's arms, more from relief than any lingering ill effects of their temporary separation. It was immediately agreed that they would never again permit themselves to be on opposite sides of the well. As soon as he had emerged on his side of time he'd felt it, though it had taken him a minute to realize just what it was he was feeling. For a split second he'd thought the horrible foreboding that had instantly come over him had been a warning that something bad was happening back in his time, and so he'd run to Kaede's first only to discover that everything was peaceful. Learning that he was the only one who felt like death had warmed over, it didn't take him long to realize what the sensation actually was, and he'd rushed back to the well and straight up to Kagome's house in less than a heartbeat.
"I'm so sorry, Kagome..." he whispered into her hair. "I didn't think."
"It's all right." she assured him. "I didn't know that would happen, either."
Inuyasha wanted to yell that it wasn't all right. That he could have just as easily killed them both with that stunt, abandoning her in her time like that. But the truth was neither of them had really thought of her world as being all that far away from his, considering it was technically the same place, just in another time. How could two worlds that each shared the Goshinboku really be all that far away from one another? But perhaps that was why the separation of half a millennium hadn't killed them, because they had both still been within the presence of the sacred god tree. Who knew if the effect would have continued to worsen if they had stayed apart for an even longer period of time? Perhaps it wouldn't have, perhaps that woozy, detached feeling of dread was as bad as it would get, but neither of them had any intention of testing their limits to find out. It was uncharted territory, and one they were perfectly content to leave uncharted. For all they knew, it was the tiny sliver of Kagome's soul that still resided in Kikyou back in the sengoku jidai that had saved them, and that was a temporary phenomenon because Kikyou had already said she would be returning her portion of Kagome's soul as soon as Naraku was defeated. Of course, in order for that to happen they had to find the guy, so Kagome immediately agreed that she would return to the past right away. There wasn't much time left in summer break, after all, so it would be best to make the most of it, before she would need to start returning to the future again for her occasional tests. Return trips Inuyasha would now have to make with her, but that was all right with him.
