Chapter Eleven: Into the West
With Kouga in the pack, there was now only one spot to search for shards, the west. Though, no one was particularly thrilled about this fact. It was bad enough to have accidental run-ins with Sesshomaru. To go poking around in his territory was another thing all together. Given the fact he was hostile toward them, he was very unlikely to take their presence there well. “Ya absolutely sure you sensed shards there?” Inuyasha asked for what seemed like the 1000th time while the rest of the group packed.
“For fuck’s sake, yes! Do you think she’d tell us to go there for the fun of it?” I snapped, pulling on a full backpack with a worried grimace. I only stopped when I realized just what had come out of my mouth.
Heart instantly dropping into the pit of my stomach, I turned to look at my new found family. All of them were staring at me aghast, especially a certain hanyou. He wore a slightly hurt expression, his triangular ears pressed against his skull. Just seeing it made deep regret fill me and I bit my lip while meeting his amber gaze. “I’m sorry, I know its no excuse but... I’m scared out of my mind,” I explained, nibbling my lower lip nervously.
“I know all too well just how powerful your half brother is and how much he hates you. I don’t think I can come close to helping defend against him,” I confessed, my right hand subconsciously moving to the hilt of my katana.
Shaking his head, the half breed merely smirked before drawing a transformed Tetsusaiga. “Do you really think he’s a match for me or my sword?” he scoffed, swinging the massive weapon for emphasis. I chuckled slightly but my eyes still moved to meet Kagome’s. She was just as worried as I was, face pale and eyes wide with fear. All of us were very aware of the power rift between the siblings. Even out arrogant leader, as loathe as he was to admit it. If we ran into the Taiyoukai, we would be lucky if he didn’t mistake our presence for an insult or, even worse, an attack. Still, we didn’t have a choice.
Sighing, I climbed onto a transformed Kilala while Miroku and Sango got onto a transformed Shippo. Kouga and his crew would travel by ground with Inuyasha carrying Kagome. At least until we reached the edge of the Western territory. Closing my eyes and burrowing into the nekomata’s thick neck fur, I grit my teeth as we rose into the air. While I was happy I no longer felt crippling fear, I doubted I would ever like flying ever again. The sooner we landed, the better.
Unfortunately, it was a rather long trip. Having opened my eyes a bit through the trip, I forced myself to look around in an effort to desensitize myself. What helped was that the scenery really was gorgeous. The proud trees and the bamboo forests, it all made me feel extremely sad that it would be filled in by buildings over the centuries. Feeling a pang in my heart, I turned my attention to the youkai I was riding on. Even her species was likely gone, along with all the other demons. Running my hand through the soft fluff of her ruff, I smiled in a melancholy manner.
Maybe, I wasn’t alone in my worries about this. Maybe Kagome had the same feelings. Maybe, after we had defeated Naraku, we could work together on a plan to help the youkai. So, there was no use in getting myself worked up about things until then. Besides, it wasn’t like there was plenty of time to at least get the ball rolling. There was also the fact Kagome could easily carry on our work after I’d died. If she mated Inuyasha, her lifespan would be extended to match his; well out spanning my own. That was all in a possible future though and I had to focus on the now.
Peering over one of Kilala’s shoulders, I caught sight of a huge meadow. A meadow that was full of flowers and would have been beautiful if not for the sense of dread it gave me. After a few seconds, it hit me. This meadow was exactly like one Rin loved to frequent. “Oh shit, I really hope they’re not...,” I began, taking a closer look and stopping when I saw four figures. One tall and white, the other two short and the final one was a mount.
“Fuck my life...,” I finished before frantically waving over to Sango and Miroku.
After a few motions, I got them to move in close enough to inform them of what I had seen. When they went pale, it only confirmed my suspicions. “We’d better land and warn the others. If he sensed us and saw where we’re going, we could be in for a fight,” the monk observed, signaling for Shippo and Kilala to do just that. Shuddering, I swallowed my nerves and prepared to defend my small ‘family’. I just hoped we could get through this without incident. I didn’t want to kill Sesshomaru just as much as I didn’t want him to harm the others. After all, he had a family of his own to protect.
Sliding off as soon as Kilala touched down, I rushed toward Inuyasha and Kagome. I just managed to warn them before Kouga slid to a stop beside us. “Hey, what’s the hold up? Is this about the Western Lord? Let me guess, you were hoping to just sneak in and back out again?” the Eastern Lord scoffed, shaking his head in derision.
“Bad move. Such an action is often seen as an act of outright aggression. Besides, no youkai lord worth his salt wouldn’t sense an intruder,” he chided, azure eyes peering back the way he had come.
Already, the area was filling with an oppressive atmosphere that made my hair stand on end. It was much worse than anything described in the anime or even fanfiction. It was like being suffocated while still breathing. It was like knowing you’re in a corner while a massive predator approached. Everything in me was demanding I run, that I save myself but I forced myself to stay put. While there was no way I could stand up to this massive power, I was still going to do my best to defend the pack.
Before I could act, Inuyasha was running to the front, brandishing his father’s fang. “Just stay back! I can handle this,” the hanyou commanded, baring his fangs. Narrowing my eyes, I shook my head and stood at his side. Tightening my grip on the hilt, I took a deep breath and drew my weapon; surrounding the blade with flames.
“I refuse to sit back and be protected. I will fight beside you and I refuse to take no for an answer,” I snarled, refusing to acknowledge the heated glare he sent my way. Behind us, the others were getting into their positions to help back us up. The only ones standing off to one side were Kouga and his crew, something I couldn’t really hold against him.
As a lord, he had to maintain good relations with other factions. If a war was started with the west because of his actions, his whole nation could suffer. Squaring my shoulders, I stood my ground as the ‘Killing Perfection’ strode into our clearing; seeming almost as if he was regarding mere ants. “Please, try to keep it civil for just a little bit. We don’t want trouble if there doesn’t have to be,” I pleaded through the side of my mouth, despite knowing full well the Taiyoukai would hear me anyway.
“Tch, words won’t work on a bastard like Sesshomaru,” spat the furious half-breed before he was launching himself at his half-brother.
“Wait! Oh, you fucking idiot,” I sighed, following close behind with a quick glimpse to Kagome.
Right now, it would behoove us to try to appear contrite as well as respectful. Something a certain hanyou was incapable of at the best of times. With Sesshomaru, it was like asking a cow to make friends with a lion. It simply wasn’t going to happen. Grimacing, Kagome did something she knew she would hear no end of later. “Sit!” echoed across the clearing. I had just enough time to see betrayal cross his face before it was buried a few feet in the dirt. Apologizing under my breath, I positioned myself between the two and prayed.
Unperturbed by any of what happened, the inu demon continued to close the distance, his only hand crooked ever so slightly. Taking a breath, I did something both stupid and extremely smart. I dropped my weapon and went to one knee. Bowing my head to show my neck, I began to speak. “Forgive our intrusion. Our intention was only to get the shards in your territory and leave. A matter so trivial, we felt it well below the mighty Sesshomaru’s notice,” I capitulated, hoping my companions were close enough to help if Inuyasha needed it. With how close he was, I was already a lost cause.
Seconds passed and there was no pain, only the shadow of the tall male standing over me. “We don’t wish to fight, with the exception of Inuyasha. We just wish to finally put an end to Naraku,” I continued, daring to tilt me head up ever so slightly so I could look death in the eye. What I saw took my breath away. He was unnaturally pale, his face so beautiful it was almost feminine. Long lashes crowned the cold amber eyes that regarded me like a slug on the grass.
“However, if you want to try to kill any of the people here; I will put my life on the line to stop you,” I finished boldly, meeting his gaze while he stared at me for endless seconds. Then he was simply continuing past me, his hand subtly falling to his side. There were no words but it was enough. He wasn’t going to kill us.. Though, what he was going to do was still a mystery.
Following behind him, I stopped briefly at the Inuyasha shaped hole. Two, furious amber eyes met mine and I mouthed an apology. Then I continued following the enigmatic canine in human form. He only stopped walking once he reached the other side of the small meadow. Eyes travelling to Kagome, he simply uttered one sentence. “This one also wishes to rid the world of the filthy tsuchigumo.” As if that answered everything, he turned and continued into the forest.
Suddenly, as if summoned by a silent signal; his other three companions came in from the opposite side. Jaken was already grumbling to himself while Rin ran up to Shippo. This, of course, earned one of the toad’s offended screeches. “Come along you useless child. As for you lot, you’d better not get left behind,” he chided, not even earning a blink from the unbothered girl.
“Rgh, who says we wanna follow that asshole anyway? All we want are the shards,” cursed from the hole in the ground, drawing a sputtering Jaken over to the still prone hanyou.
Seemingly ignoring her tiny guardian, Rin began to pull Kagome along with Ah-Un. “Lord Sesshomaru moves fast. We can’t stop long if we want to keep up,” she urged, smiling as we hesitantly began to move. Inuyasha would join us later. Besides, having him indisposed might earn us some precious time to get on Sesshomaru’s good side. Still, we kept a respectable distance from the powerful being as we walked. After all, he could very well just decide it wasn’t worth the trouble at any moment.
“Hello! Rin does not think Rin has seen you before,” chirped a voice to my right, distracting me from the extremely stressful situation at hand.
Looking down, I saw Rin smiling up at me innocently. Returning the grin, I reached down to offer my hand. “My name is Jade. I’m new to the group,” I introduced, chuckling when she looked at the extended appendage like a foreign object. Retracting my handshake, I returned my focus to the enigmatic dog.
“Well, if Kagome likes you then you must be a good person,” observed the young girl, her words making my heart swell just the slightest bit.
“Thanks but right now, I’m worried about your... Lord,” I responded, keeping myself from calling Sesshomaru her father only barely.
While it was an unspoken fact he cared for her like a daughter, I had suspicions the haughty Taiyoukai wouldn’t take kindly hearing it from someone like me. Not to mention the fact that I highly doubted either had accepted how they felt about the other. “Rin does not blame you but Lord Seeshomaru would have already killed you if Lord Sesshomaru had wanted,” the child wisely pointed out, smiling despite the horrifying sentence she had just uttered. Still, the child had a point. The fact we weren’t all dead or engaged in battle was a pretty good sign as far as the ‘Killing Perfection’ went.
Unfortunately, the peace was broken by the sound of something charging up from behind. Having a very good idea of what it was, I spun to see Inuyasha speeding at us with Tetsusaiga fully transformed. “Inuyasha, stop!” I attempted, only to have my words fall on deaf ears.
“Fuck that! I ain’t followin’ this asshole and I sure as Hell ain’t lettin’ any of you either,” he spat, swinging his sword at his half brother’s back.
It was not a surprise when Sesshomaru turned, deftly blocking the blow with Tokijin. Grimacing, I made a single step forward to stop them before Sango was halting me. “Hold on Jade. Right now, I think this fight is more about pack dynamics. A battle to see who will be alpha of the pack,” she informed, her words making all too much sense. They were Inu after all. And they both happened to feel they were an alpha. In nature, such a thing would certainly end with conflict. Still, I wouldn’t let them kill eachother. If it got too bad, I would have to have Kagome help step in. For now, all we could do was watch.
The two half siblings stared eachother down for several seconds before Inuyasha was jumping backward. Letting out a string of foul language that would make a sailor blush, he readied his weapon and began to surround the massive blade with youki. Seemingly bored with what was happening, Rin invited Shippo to go draw with the crayons Kagome had brought him from the future. This, of course, earned an offended squawk from a certain toad that had just arrived.
Happy that those three were occupied, I bit my lip as I watched Inuyasha launch a backlash wave at Sesshomaru. Eyes flickering red, the full blooded demon dodged the attack easily; his own weapon glowing with his youki. Lifting his upper lip slightly, he launched himself at his younger half sibling. The sound of metal crashing together was enough to set my teeth on edge and I found myself slightly surprised Sesshomaru hadn’t sent an attack back. Was he trying to prove his superiority through his strength alone?
Growling, Inuyasha attempted to push the other male away; only to end up being flung backward and off his feet. Getting up immediately, the hanyou narrowed his eyes before sending out another backlash. This time, the Western Lord cut through the attack; sprinting forward to meet blades with his opponent. Already, the half-breed’s brow was furrowed with confusion. “Oi, why ain’t ya attackin’ right? Why aren’t ya usin’ yer Youki?” he questioned, only getting pushed back for his efforts. Only this time, the red clad man pushed back with all his might. For several minutes, it was almost like the pair were at an impasse.
Then the Taiyoukai was swinging his sword and effectively sending his victim flying. This time, our would-be leader left a long furrow in the ground. Gritting his teeth, he buried the tip of his weapon in the ground; using it to help himself up. This time Sesshomaru didn’t wait before charging forward. With almost deadly precision, he swung down Tokijin, Inuyasha barely having enough time to block with Tetsusaiga.
All the while, the rest of us watched with a fair amount of anxiety. Inuyasha would most certainly lose but how far would he push it? Would he end up dying? As he was pushed back yet again, this time into a tree, I couldn’t help but wince. The hanyou let out a howl of pain from the force of the hit but was back on his feet, only to end up with the tip of Sesshomaru’s sword at his throat. “Yield,” came a simple order that likely had the other male’s blood boiling.
“Like I’d leave my pack in the hands of a bastard like you,” snarled a response before Inuyasha was knocking Tokijin away with his own sword.
It went on like that for hours, all of us eventually building a fire as the sun began to set. After so long, even someone as defatigable as Inuyasha was showing signs of flagging. His breathing was becoming more labored and his reactions more sloppy. Yet Sesshomaru appeared to be having no such troubles. He seemed just as fresh as when the fight started. A fact that wasn’t lost on his half sibling. With a strangled yell, the hanyou made a wild swing; earning him a sound knock to the back of his head. This, of course, knocked him flat.
For several moments, the cold male glared down at the unconscious half-breed. That was when Kagome ran forward with me and the others close behind. Ignoring the powerful youkai, the highschooler immediately knelt by her companion; helping him into a sitting position. I, of course, stood between the pair and Sesshomaru while Sango and Miroku helped Kagome. “You’ve proven your point. Don’t continue this or you’ll kill him,” I hissed, some of my protectiveness for my new family bleeding into my voice.
Meeting my gaze for a few seconds, the Taiyoukai remained as unreadable as ever. Then he simply walked over to the far side of the camp and sat against a tree. Taking it as a good sign that he had left Rin at the fireside with Shippo and Kilala, I turned back to my small group. Only to find them staring at me like I had two heads, with the exception of the still unconscious Inuyasha. Even Kouga and his entourage appeared mildly impressed. Ignoring that for the time being, I proceeded to help Kagome, Sango and Miroku lug our leader’s dead weight toward the fire.
A few minutes later, we were all sitting around the fire while the children slept. Even Jaken was passed out, snoring against Ah-Un. “I can’t believe you stood up to Sesshomaru not once, but twice,” Kagome whispered in my ear, likely in an effort to not be heard by said demon.
“I don’t think he’s out to kill us in particular. Especially given your relationship with Rin. Besides, I will die before I let anyone harm someone in this group,” I responded quietly, despite knowing he could hear every word anyway. He was a full blooded inu demon after all.
“That isn’t our problem right now. If Inuyasha keeps going like this, he’ll die of exhaustion,” I continued in a more conversational volume, my brow furrowing.
“I know what you mean... But I can’t just use the subjugation spell in this case. It would completely break his pride,” the teen next to me sigh, looking just as troubled as I felt.
Tomorrow, it was very likely our leader would continue the fight despite his condition. I doubted any amount of talking would stop this inevitability. At times, the hanyou could be disastrously stubborn and most of the time it took separating him from the situation after he had been knocked out. Scrubbing my face, I glanced toward the Taiyoukai who was a decent distance away from the camp. As much as I wanted to appeal to him, it would be little to no use. The situation was a complete shit show. “I never thought dog breath had it in him. To keep fighting against Sesshomaru...,” observed Kouga, effectively distracting me from my thoughts.
“In a struggle for alpha, that will likely get him killed, however,” he concluded with a slight frown. A fact that surprised me, given his hostility toward the unconscious hanyou.
Sango could only nod in agreement, worry in her dark eyes. “There’s no stopping such a battle until one side either concedes or...,” she intoned, a grim expression flitting across her face. Going host white, Kagome glanced toward the passed out half demon. Knowing she had to be terrified, I placed a hand on her shoulder to offer comfort; as small as it was.
“Maybe you can talk to him tomorrow. Try to get him to listen to reason,” I attempted to assure. All I got was a grim expression in response.
