Originally Beta'd by Leah! ~~~ Comforting, small droplets of hot water bounced and traveled over Kagome’s body as she stood under the water, thinking about the conversation she just had with her mother while the shower heated. As always, she had been extremely understanding to her daughter’s twisted fate, but Kagome could hear the tired sigh in her voice. Though her mom would have to watch the shrine while she was gone, she knew that was not bothersome. She wanted her daughter back, the daughter that left five years ago, not the Kagome that came back a year after. She couldn’t blame her; she wanted that person back too, the person that resembled her mother so much, maybe minus her own fits of anger. Her shower felt better than any other she could remember in recent history. The scalding water caressed her skin and softened her mood while tiny groups of bubbles thinned and trailed down her curves. She added ‘a regular supply of soap’ to the increasing list of things she would miss, yet the length of the list disturbed her. Did she miss this much before? Why was she clinging now? She was always just happy doing what she needed to do, but… now… What made her happy anymore? She clearly did not feel like the girl who traveled back and forth between eras almost a half a decade ago. That girl was tenacious. She fought and forgave. She would take regular baths, but with no qualms about using feudal methods when needed. She would not complain about little things and truly cared about only what was important; her mission, her school, her friends, her love. Maybe she hadn’t had anything important to care for. Maybe, when she lost what she held above all other things, she didn’t know how to care for the rest. Maybe, she was clinging onto little things so she wouldn’t have to hurt over the big ones anymore. This is not who she remembered herself to be. She was never this weak. There was another mission, another task, another destiny that required her heart and she would have to fix something before she could continue. Kagome knew it had to start with Inuyasha. Sighing, she imagined her mental list of comforts and added what she longed for the most on the very top. She missed herself. The water started hitting her like icicles, waking her from her musings and drawing attention the length of her shower. She reached down and turned off the water, letting the hot steam hide her a moment longer before she had to step forward on an uncertain path. Closing her eyes and concentrating, Kagome sent her aura out to ensure she was safe to exit with the overly sensitive senses of youkai about. Her brows stitched together and her aura stretched out further. Where were…? … Oh… crap. She didn’t feel the magic of the well being recently used, but she sure as hell didn’t feel any youki either. Cursing under her breath, she started considering where exactly in the huge city she should start looking and within minutes Kagome had maneuvered into a sports bra and panties, covering them with jeans and her favorite blue sweater of that season. Her skin was still damp and the day was cool with the approaching autumn, adding to the prickling frustration building up. Reluctantly, Kagome forwent brushing her hair, leaving the freshly washed locks to drip and swing everywhere as she rushed around. The wool was itchy where it got damp, but she ignored the annoyance and made last minute adjustments to herself while rushing down the stairs, quickly cramming her small feet into the waiting shoes by the back door. She started sliding the screen when it hit her full force. The youkai heading towards her was strong and quick. Her whispered curses were stilled midway by her intake of breath as she fought to stay upright against the aura suddenly pushing against her. Her arm swung harder, causing the screen to now slam open and it collided with a loud thunk, and Kagome found herself staring directly at a demon wall. She was inches from harsh armor and the silk of hair and haori that belonged to the cause of her anxiety, and moved to look him directly in the eyes. “You!” She seethed through her teeth, clenching her jaw tight and boldly taking a step forward. Sesshoumaru looked down at the disturbed woman. Her scent invaded him with her crisp, bright aroma; like an endless sunrise on fresh ocean waves which were turbulent with her anger and fear for the peace of her time. She dared be angry with him. She dared talk to him with such disrespect. The insolence… “Woman.” It came out harsh and threatening. Sesshoumaru’s eyes stared hard into hers; narrowing his brow the longer she took to submit. Before she had time to cower Inuyasha could be seen leaping towards them. With a second wind of frustration, she directed her full force at him and walked past Sesshoumaru, who was surprised to be disregarded so quickly. “YOU-!” She raced outside and stood in the small clearing, staring at the approaching airborne hanyou. The taiyoukai’s irritation flared. She may have been an asset in the past, she may have been a friend to his ward, and she may prove some use in the near future, but this behavior he would not stand. Turning, he made his way to inform the miko of her place, but stopped when he saw her. She was standing still… too still. Her anger was evident and her spirit was crawling over her skin. Flames danced in her eyes and everything about her spoke of action, but she did not move, not to mention she was unnaturally quiet. It was as if she was waiting… but for what? Sesshoumaru took a quick glance towards the approaching hanyou, then back to the patient miko. Now he understood. Kagome stood as still as possible, making sure she didn’t miss the perfect moment. It would only exist for a fraction of a second. It had to be done then and it wasn’t long before she was rewarded. At the highest point of Inuyasha’s newest leap right over the open grounds of the shrine, Kagome dug her feet into the dirt and inhaled deeply, ready to scream. Inuyasha could see her standing tense in her courtyard, the chilly afternoon air surrounding her refreshing, clean scent mixed with water that still dripped from her hair, and something strong was laced through it all… it was familiar and recalled memories of when they were at their closest. The fog of nostalgia lifted when he realized exactly what it was; it was her scent when she was truly pissed off and her seething voice confirmed it. “OO-“ Shit. “-SUWA-“ Mid-air, with no way to change directions and nothing to slow his fall, Inuyasha put his forearms in front of his face to lessen the impact to his head, remembering Kagome’s promise of “tasting dirt for the rest of his life”. “-RRRIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!” Glowing bright, the subjugation beads reminded Sesshoumaru of another way the miko was proven her usefulness, and another reason why he would have to make her travel with him… and another reason why he couldn’t punish her. Damn. The vibrations of the impact reached her feet, jump-starting them to storm in his direction. Something stirred inside her, a small thrill she couldn’t quite place, so she pushed it away to deal with her victim buried in the crater. “What happened!?” Kagome screams penetrated through the Earth covering his head. The questions were slightly muffled, but the message got through clear enough. “Where did you go!? How could you do this!?” For a moment, Inuyasha seriously considered staying down in the hole for a while; at least her questions wouldn’t be screamed in his ears. But, soon his eyes popped over the edge, brows pinched together in protest to his punishment. Kagome stared back, unremorseful for her actions. A quiet “Hn” was heard through their stare as Sesshoumaru walked into the house, leaving the hanyou to deal with the consequences of betraying the miko’s wishes; her orders had no hold on him. Again, Kagome asked, “Inuyasha, what happened?” Inuyasha’s attempts to crawl out of the hole were stopped as he recalled the damage left by their scuffle downtown. He looked up at Kagome, the anger replaced by an apologetic plea in his honey eyes, and almost on cue distant sirens answered for him. Kagome inhaled sharply and her body went rigid as she listened to the wails of emergency vehicles, knowing what had caused them. She stared off towards the direction they were headed and unsuccessfully tried to will time itself to reverse. A couple slow blinks later she turned back to Inuyasha with wide eyes, then without warning quickly spun around, unknowingly kicking dirt in his face. She raced inside while ignoring Inuyasha’s complaints behind her. Kagome almost tripped over herself trying to open the screen and run through it simultaneously. Sesshoumaru stood in the kitchen, taking in the sight of the clumsy, scared miko. Internally, he hoped she would not be as such in battle and pondered how she could switch from collected to catastrophe so quickly. Standing still to await her apology for the disrespect, his pupils shrank and jaw tightened when she rushed past him without acknowledgement… again. The news, I have to see the news. Her feet seemed to drag as she couldn’t get to the front room fast enough and barely registered the trouble-making demon in the kitchen as she rushed by. Water drops from her slowly drying hair flew around the room as she looked for the remote among the random artifacts and books of the feudal era, then fumbling with it once it was finally in her hands. Sesshoumaru stood in the doorway, completely confused by her actions. Brushing dirt off his clothing, Inuyasha joined them in the room, lip bleeding and small rocks clinging throughout his hair. The hanyou met the taiyoukai’s eyes; the latter’s obvious amusement shining through them. “Shut up,” Inuyasha warned, and Sesshoumaru thought briefly on the future era’s obvious lack of propriety, when a high pitched humming filled the room and the caught his attention, causing him to turn his head towards the large black box on the other side of the room. It illuminated as Kagome pointed at it with a much smaller box in her hands. As she pushed tiny, soft buttons on the hand held item the lighted images on the larger box changed. This was magic he was unaware of. What was this odd mirror showing them? Just what was this girl capable of? Then, the image settled on one that broke through his stoic mask; his surprise very apparent on his sharp features for a brief second. It was from a far distance and the image was shaking, but it was… him; statuesque, commanding, and looking down upon the humans with whom he found himself disgusted with. The reflection of that morning changed to Inuyasha joining him, and then quickly escalated to their bout, becoming blurs then stills in instants. Once they were out of sight, a painted woman filled the screen and spoke with a high, practiced, serious tone. “A lucky and surprised amateur camera man caught these images earlier this morning of two mysterious beings appearing and disappearing seemingly at will. No comment has been made by local officials or law personnel, and currently the video is being investigated for authenticity. However, the damage on downtown is very real.” The video replayed across the screen along with news footage of concrete chunks littering sidewalks and Kagome surprised herself with the ability to speak, though granted not very well. “Wha-uh-wha-how-…why… Inuyasha?” He was as wide-eyed as Kagome, but more at a loss for words. Seeing no comfort in him, she shifted her attention. “Sesshoumaru?” He stepped close to the box and knelt down. Moving his eyes toward the lit surface that reflected the small battle from earlier, the sensei inside him spoke. “Inuyasha, your form has not improved much.” Kagome was still shocked as she stared at the TV. “No, whatever, but… uh… why?” Still focused on the moving flat mirror to the past, he elaborated, “He does not have the full strength of complete youkai blood. It can be taught through training; however his progress is slower than expected.” Inuyasha’s angry words reached across the room. “Asshole, you’ve only sparred with me six times!” Willing the confusion and conversation away, Kagome shook her head. “No no, I mean… Why?” She pointed at the TV with the remote with more urgency. “Why are you fighting?” Both youkai looks at the TV, but Sesshoumaru was the one to answer after a brief pause. “We agreed to leave for different reasons.” Inuyasha grumbled in the corner while cracking his knuckles, but Kagome’s attention was drawn to the report continuing on the screen as the female newscaster spoke again. “The odd event caused damage to three downtown buildings, the debris from which crashing down on the sidewalk and street below. No estimated amount of damage has been assessed so far, but thankfully, no one was seriously injured.” Whatever flashed across the screen was suddenly no longer a concern for Kagome. No one is injured, no one died. Her shoulders relaxed as she turned to the hanyou, the small smile on her face giving a false sense of safety that Inuyasha was well too acquainted with. He no longer leaned against the wall and instinctively took a battle stance, waiting for his next confrontation with the woman who was once everything to him. Her smile doing nothing to reassure him, Kagome spoke calmly. “Inuyasha, this is really bad, but it could have been a lot worse. I’m sorry for subjugating you, I should have listened first.” Words were caught in his throat, and for a moment his subconscious refused to let him answer. However, his baser self that tried to protect him lost against his flawed logic and he asked, “Kagome… I thought you would be angrier.” With a shift of her eyes the fire within them returned, threatening to burn the pushy hanyou. “Of course I’m mad! I’m pissed off! You could have seriously hurt someone! You haven’t changed a bit! You still take advantage of my forgiveness!” As her voice rang loud in their ears, Inuyasha had two decisions at this point; agree and appease, or fight back… “Keh! What forgiveness!?” His fist shook in front of him as he choose the latter. “You left! You just fucking disappeared! Besides, you’ve done enough changing for the both of us! What did you do, rub your ‘chocolate’ directly on your hips!” As her face reddened Kagome’s voice became dangerous. “I stayed through a lot and I couldn’t take anymore! And don’t stare at my hips!” “Wha-… No one is looking, wench!” he spat back at her, defending himself by further insulting her. Sesshoumaru took this moment to glance down at the miko’s hips, deliberately making the hanyou a liar, then took in the rest of her form. She had changed, slightly, since he last saw her picking flowers with Rin a lifetime ago, though she wasn’t fat as Inuyasha was teasing. She had just grown, shedding the awkward proportions of human adolescence and replacing them with the soft curves of a woman. Humans changed so quickly in their short lives. Kagome had a great comeback, and she felt that same small thrill deep inside her stir. For only a moment she realized it was familiar, that in its own twisted way, her fights with Inuyasha and meeting with Sesshoumaru were awakening something inside her. She felt strong and powerful, but only for that moment. As she moved forward to wave a finger in Inuyasha’s face, the blinding pain that had cursed her for five years took hold, quickly bringing Kagome to her knees. She screamed lightly in agony as she collapsed into herself, instinctively taking a fetal position against this unknown attack. Fighting against the pain she shifted with determined movements to place hands on the carpet and command her powers, giving release to the internal pressure as the energy coated her entire body. Inuyasha stood away from the glowing Kagome, not fully surprised. With a slight sneer at the tickling aura of purity dangerously close to him Sesshoumaru commanded, “Miko, stop that.” Breathing heavily, the glowing slowly stopped, and Kagome stared at the carpet. It hadn’t hurt that bad since she lived in the feudal era. Wondering what could have caused its strength, she saw bare feet enter her vision and she looked up as he started to kneel down. “Kagome,” his voice was still slightly raspy from screaming, but it conveyed his concern. “It still hurts?” Nodding slightly, she took Inuyasha’s offered hand and lifted herself up. Again, she had flipped drastically into another emotion, and Sesshoumaru looked with slight interest at the spectacle of some torment of hers. His confusion towards the miko continued to grow, and the lack of answers continued to annoy. This will not do. They walked towards the kitchen for what she called “tylenol” and the illuminated box spoke again, distracting him from this new development. “New video from a security camera of these two inhuman fighters has been uncovered. Apparently, the confrontation continued inside of a busy office building. Here’s the exclusive footage from this morning’s downtown disturbance.” Unlike the last image of himself, this one was still and slightly grainy, but what was happening was clear. Whatever the humans were doing appeared mundane, even with all the advancements around them they looked dull. Breaking through the boredom was Inuyasha as he crashed through the window, scattering papers and people in his wake. With a flash Sesshoumaru now stood in the damaged opening. The danger he exuded was emphasized by his hair dancing around him like silver fire and his eyes glowing red with the fight. Words were spoken, but no audio played through the image, and Inuyasha was flying again, out of sight. Sesshoumaru watched himself start to approach the beaten dog when the image of him stopped and turned his head towards a little girl cowering away. The playback stopped and a young, frightened looking human filled the screen, speaking fast into the camera, “His eyes were red! The complete eye! He was wearing some sort of crazy contacts or something, and he was dressed for a cosplay convention, but it looked real! He was like a deadly freak show!” Sesshoumaru wasn’t sure what contacts or cosplay was, but the human’s ignorance exacerbated the insult. “Fool,” he said low and soft as he got closer to the screen. The playback continued, now zooming into his face as he stared at the small child. As his expression on screen softened the current Sesshoumaru’s fumed then almost punched through the screen, regardless of its magical powers, when he saw the small tilt to his head as he offered the girl a comforting, silent growl; Rin’s growl. He was stopped from creating damage to Kagome’s magic box when that girl now filled the screen as the idiotic human before had and someone out of sight was asking questions. “Can you tell us what happened?” She was still sobbing, destroying some unknown’s efforts at cleaning her face before her on camera presentation, and with short breaths she answered. “After that red man crashed through my mommy grabbed me and we huddled by my daddy, but I couldn’t find him!” The sobbing intensified through the next question. “What can you tell us of the other man?” The little girl’s head shook violently. “That’s not a man! He barked at me! He was a monster! Please, please keep the monster away!” The small amount of the little girl’s control broke and she cried. The image cut to the videos again with nonsense words from the painted lady reiterating what was already said. Sesshoumaru’s eyes had glazed over and though the lights of his battle danced in his eyes; they were not seeing anything in front of him. A monster… Heartless. He felt a slight vibration at his side and stood up, stepping on the remote, and gripping his father’s inheritance with deadly force and not noticing the channel changing. “Tensaiga, cease this. Be grateful I did not burn you along with her.” ~~~~~ Inuyasha leaned against a counter while Kagome sat silently at the table, slowly sipping at her water and catching her breath, when they heard the sounds from the TV change to gun fire and screaming. Eyes gaping at Inuyasha, she looked scared and promising to switch back into attack mode. He quickly waved his hands, reassuring her, “That wasn’t us!” When the faint sounds of a commercial came on, she tried to relax again. Inuyasha took a seat next to her and attempted to start a conversation. “Has it ever stopped?” Sighing, she gave in. “It hasn’t been that bad in years.” “What could have caused it?” Smirking, she teased, “You.” His ears fell flat to his head and she elaborated. “I don’t know for sure, but since you two came through yesterday I’ve felt more like myself than I have in years, too. I don’t know if it’s connected, but I still know how to keep it under control.” Raising her spiritually charged hands in demonstration, Kagome offered a reassuring smile. Then her eyes rolled when she heard Sesshoumaru’s semi-distant voice from the other room. “Miko, stop that.” She dropped her hands and sighed at being reminded she had to get the two inuyoukai back through the well before anything else could happen, but her curiosity was getting the best of her. “What was all that, ‘you’re form is off’ stuff?” she asked genuinely. Staring off into space, he took a moment to think about his answer. A soft, fall breeze blew in through the still open shoji, toying with the loose edges of scrolls and paperwork in their organized disarray. “He’s been training me on my old man’s fang.” She was shocked, to say the least. “Sesshoumaru!?” “Keh,” he said with a small laugh, “Who would have thought, huh?” She blinked a few times before adding, “And you let him?” He just stared back as he was reminded of everything she had missed since she left, and the sickening thought crossed his mind that if she would have stayed she would have missed it anyways as death would have taken her long ago. But, here she was, just as young, just as strong… just as loud, and when she smiled he felt his heart melt for her once again. “I was wrong, Inuyasha.” Wide eyes stared at her, questioning her words and she continued through her smile, “You have changed.” Inuyasha let go of a long breath and stared at the table. “I was wrong, too. I don’t know what you mean by you aren’t yourself,” his eyes took hers again, “Because you haven’t changed at all.” In a small moment, she felt comforted. He felt like her friend again, and that was enough to charge her spirit. Slowly standing, Kagome controlled her voice and sweetly pleaded. “I have to pack, and make another call. I swear I’ll be only a minute, so please… PLEASE… stay here?” Inuyasha nodded and watched her leave, not knowing what to do with the emotions crashing around in his heart. She truly was one of a kind. He’d been left behind, dumped, and beaten his whole life, and the only lifeline to hope was Kagome… and he had ruined that too. He was unsure of what the kami had planned bringing her back into his life, but he wouldn’t mess it up. Not again. Kagome found Sesshoumaru standing and staring at the screen, watching a war documentary flash histories of death in black and white. She giggled a little in her mind. Fitting. With an impressive sweet bounce, one that could convince almost any man to do her wishes, she approached Sesshoumaru. “Don’t run off.” Yes, it was a command, but it sounded like sugar on her tongue. He turned to her and glared down at the sincerely sweet woman as she, again, tried to dominate his actions. When she didn’t buckle under his deathly stare, he started closer to her and opened his mouth to scold, but Kagome cut him off. “Please, Sesshoumaru-sama.” Her eyes blossomed as she pleaded her case without words, obviously not wanting another situation like the one from earlier to occur again. He huffed, but stopped his approached inches away from the insolent miko. “You would use pleasantries and titles to manipulate submission.” It wasn’t a question. It was steady and almost demeaning. She could tell by the tone in his voice he was not pleased with her and thought carefully on her next words. Looking down to play with her sleeves for a moment Kagome decided honesty was the best answer. So, raising her eyes and slightly tilting her head at him, she asked, “Does it work?” He paused, offering no answer for an uncomfortable minute as he took in her submissive stance. Unaware of her actions, she was offering him control. “You keep this Sesshoumaru waiting. Hurry.” Kagome beamed. “Thank you, Sesshoumaru-sama!” and raced up the stairs. He looked down at the spot she was just at, lost in thought. She had trusted him completely and immediately, even after he showed no concern for her wishes earlier. Her heart was too big for her own good, and she had allowed Sesshoumaru not only leadership, but her complete faith… over six words. His “Hn” cut his consideration short and the taiyoukai headed into the kitchen, seeking some long-awaited answers. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
