Chapter 11: Error
~*~*~
Sachiko stared wide-eyed in disbelief as she looked at the furious, young miko in front of her. No one said a word, nor dared to move as Kagome continued her murderous glare; demanding some sort of explanation.
Kagome had certainly caught everyone off guard, especially with such a forceful slap coming from a small human.
It was then that Sachiko noticed Kagome’s wrist was beginning to swell and it made her even more nervous as she realized that her Lady had injured herself.
Lord Sesshoumaru wasn’t going to like this.
Very timidly, Sachiko approached her Lady.
“My Lady…um, I think you’ve injured your wrist,” Sachiko said quietly as she tried to draw Kagome’s attention.
However, Kagome ignored her and the throbbing pain she felt shooting up her arm; she was entirely too pissed off to care about small details.
“How could you do this to me?! How could you rape me and then kill my child without a second thought?!” Kagome grounded out as she watched a smirk play across his lips.
He dared to smirk at her, despite killing her child while she was completely defenseless.
Despicable.
Katsutoshi chuckled.
“Forgive me, my Lady, but I believe you have mistakenly hit the wrong guy,” He said as he defensively threw his hands up.
Kagome knitted her eyebrows together in confusion; she had just felt him kiss her in her sleep a few moments ago…
…right?
Sachiko anxiously glanced from one person to another, as she tried to find a way out of the room filled with tension.
Her Lady had just struck the Captain of the Guard; a hot-headed, no nonsense type of demon, who was now third in line to rule the Western Lands…
Distantly, Sachiko could feel an ice-cold chill run down her spine.
Surely, Katsutoshi wouldn’t dare…
Kagome looked at Sachiko, who bit her bottom lip and wrung her hands together out of nervousness, before she turned to Katsutoshi, who raised a curious eyebrow at her.
But he was just here…it felt like he was there only a moment ago…
Or was it only a dream?
Kagome swallowed uneasily as she slowly registered the fact that she might’ve hit the wrong person.
After a long stretch of awkward silence, Kagome managed to speak.
“…you’re not…him?” Kagome asked quietly.
Katsutoshi shook his head.
He had observed Kagome from time to time before she was brought here to the castle and thought she was a funny little spitfire. She was kind and gentle, but had such a bad temper that it would scare all of the demons right out of hell if they crossed her.
Katsutoshi inwardly chuckled as he started to wonder what would happen if Kagome did hit Sesshoumaru?
He was pretty sure that his stubborn cousin, whom he treated like an older brother, wouldn’t dare to hurt her, but it would’ve certainly been amusing to witness that predicament.
“I’m assuming that you’ve meant to hit my older cousin, my Lady. He had left here to resume his journey hours ago,” Katsutoshi explained wryly.
“Your older cousin…?” Kagome inquired as Sachiko approached her side to examine her swollen wrist.
Luckily, it wasn’t broken, but still it was more than likely a sprain.
Was Lady Kagome always this accident-prone? Sachiko wondered as she offered her Lady a reassuring smile.
“I’m going to go get Naoki, so she can examine your hand, my Lady. I should be back shortly,” Sachiko informed as she eyed Katsutoshi pointedly before swiftly heading out of the large screen doors.
As soon as Sachiko snapped the doors shut, Katsutoshi turned back to Kagome and offered her an apologetic bow.
“I’m Katsutoshi, Captain of the castle’s military and your new cousin, my Lady,” Katsutoshi said reverently with a low bow.
Nervously, Kagome rubbed her upper arm as she struggled to form some sort of apology to the intimidating looking youkai.
“Sorry…I didn’t know tha-”
Katsutoshi stopped her.
“There’s no need to apologize, my Lady. Besides, no other male could ever enter into this room with the barrier around, anyway. You’ve been asleep for a while, so it’s only natural to for you to assume that I might be him,” Katsutoshi explained.
“No other male? Then how did you-”
“Our Lord has appointed me as your new personal guard, so with that I have special… privileges,” Katsutoshi smirked.
Kagome gave a small sigh and looked towards the large screens doors; longing for freedom.
I guess he’s decided to step up security around here… Kagome thought sadly.
“I see,” Kagome said dejectedly as Katsutoshi followed her line of sight.
He knew that she wanted to get out, but it was under Sesshoumaru’s strict orders for her to not step a single toe outside of the private bedchambers, especially in her condition.
“Come now, my Lady. You must lie down. It’s not good for you to stand too long while you’re with child,” Katsutoshi said in an attempt to distract her as he gestured towards the sleeping room.
He was positive that Kagome didn’t want to sleep again, but part of his job was making sure that she was as comfortable as possible and that her activities as well as movement was very limited.
The twins were very important as well as she and to make sure the birthing would go as smooth as possible, Kagome would have to remain mostly in her futon until the time came.
Unfortunately, she was just as stubborn as Sesshoumaru and as many years as he had lived by his cousin’s side, Katsutoshi knew that there were very few convincing ways to get around stubbornness.
Kagome raised an eyebrow in surprise; there was no way she heard that correctly.
“…what?” Kagome breathed as she stared at the tall, brawny youkai captain before her.
Katsutoshi tilted his head slightly in confusion; unsure of what his Lady was asking about.
“You must rest again, it’s not good for you or the infants,” Katsutoshi clarified.
Slowly, Kagome looked down.
To say that she had nearly jumped out of her skin from surprise was an understatement, as the young miko stared in astonishment at her largely swollen belly.
She had been too preoccupied and too angry to even notice that she was still pregnant. Just to make sure it wasn’t a dream, Kagome carefully placed her hand on her rounded belly.
I’m still pregnant…Kagome thought in shock as she looked at Katsutoshi for some sort of answer.
“How…? I thought they said that my baby wasn’t going to make it…” Kagome asked.
Katsutoshi shrugged, although he really knew the answer.
Tenseiga…
“I don’t know, my Lady, but both are absolutely fine now. I suppose this is what you humans call, a miracle,” Katsutoshi said as he walked past Kagome and climbed up the platform’s steps; holding out his large hand to help Kagome climb back up.
Kagome was too stunned to move; overwhelmed by the fact that both of her babies were completely fine.
But she was certain that the fall had claimed one of their lives…
Suddenly, Kagome had a flashback of that night.
The color white…the tea…the immense pain…bloodied sheets…the fall…and…
Sango…
Katsutoshi took a concerned step down from one of the stairs as he noticed that Kagome had gone completely silent and that she begun to tremble with fear radiating from her.
“My Lady…?” Katsutoshi started hesitantly.
There was no way in hell that he was going let anything else happen to her on his watch.
Slowly, Kagome brought her gaze back to the concerned youkai Captain as her stormy blue eyes met his silvery gray ones from across the room.
“Where’s Sango?”
~*~*~
There was no mistaking it.
It was the same disgusting scent of sulfur that had managed to irritate the Taiyoukai to no end and it was getting closer as he advanced.
Naraku…however, the evil hanyou wasn’t alone.
Sesshoumaru inwardly smirked as he rapidly ran through the trees of the forest; elegantly dodging amongst them to reach his destination.
Inuyasha was there too, along with the youkai wolf prince.
This would prove to be a very interesting encounter.
They had no idea that Kagome was living in his home, carrying around his pups.
He had won the game without them even knowing it.
Pathetic.
Sesshoumaru began to decrease his speed as he closed in on the location of the ongoing battle between the three combatants.
As he approached the scene, Sesshoumaru masked his scent and aura.
It would be a perfect opportunity to catch Naraku off guard, since he was distracted by Inuyasha and Koga, who were fiercely trying to attack him.
All he had to do was destroy the nuisance that was Naraku, and he would be one step closer to obtaining the Kamiken…
Failure was absolutely not an option now.
He had to protect the Celestial Heir at all costs, especially since the birth was less than a week away.
Silently, Sesshoumaru drew Tokijin and slowly began to advance forward with the exact precision of a skilled assassin.
In a blink of an eye, Sesshoumaru had left his original spot and to the surprise of everyone in the forest’s clearing, he unleashed a deadly blast from mid-air that had connected with Naraku’s main body.
The blast was so loud, so bright and so sudden that it had momentarily disoriented Inuyasha and Koga. By the time the blast cleared and the light faded away, the pair of rivals spotted someone in the distance landing gracefully behind the light clouds of smoke.
At first, Inuyasha and Koga couldn’t tell who had attack Naraku suddenly like that, because it happened so fast. However, they were on edge because they were not sure if the attacker was an enemy or an ally.
Soundlessly, Sesshoumaru emerged from the billows of smoke.
Inuyasha casually raised the Tetsusaiga and rested the large sword over his shoulder as he watched Sesshoumaru approached them.
“Keh, it’s only you. Get outta here, we can defeat Naraku without ya’,” Inuyasha sneered.
The last thing Inuyasha wanted was for more interference with Naraku, especially since he didn’t get any information about Kagome yet.
If Naraku wound up dead without giving him Kagome and the other’s whereabouts, then Inuyasha would have no idea of what to do.
“Silence, Inuyasha. This is my territory, so I shall deal with Naraku myself,” Sesshoumaru stated firmly as he turned towards the badly injured spider hanyou.
“Well, well. Lord Sesshoumaru, how wonderful it is to have you join us,” Naraku chuckled darkly as he held his profusely bleeding and half-severed shoulder.
It was slowly starting to regenerate and Sesshoumaru couldn’t allow it to do that.
Swiftly and without warning, the Taiyoukai disappeared in a blur again and before he reappeared again, Naraku quickly erected a barrier; just as the Tokijin was getting ready to strike him.
Instead, the Tokijin struck the large barrier, causing a magnificent display of the sword’s immense electrical power as it fought to destroy the barrier.
Sesshoumaru did his best to push forward with the help of Tokijin and nearly succeeded in breaking down the barrier as the thin shield began to flicker under the massive onslaught; however, Sesshoumaru retreated back just as the surge of power reached a dangerously high level.
Gracefully, Sesshoumaru landed back on the grassy earth.
Naraku smirked; it was a close call, but it did allow him to see that Sesshoumaru possessed something that he was after.
“So, you’ve brought some of the jewel shards to me. How very kind of you,” Naraku said as he temporarily let down his barrier to unleash an onslaught of tentacles in the Taiyoukai’s direction.
Swiftly, Sesshoumaru swung his sword and with one large slash, he had destroyed all of the tentacles Naraku sent his way.
“What the hell are ya doin’ with Kagome’s shards?!” Inuyasha shouted angrily as he pointed the Tetsusaiga at Sesshoumaru.
“What?!” Koga exclaimed as he looked from the Taiyoukai to the inu hanyou that his woman once travelled with.
Sure enough, barely peeking from the top of his haori was the familiar small bottle of shards that Kagome had once carried around her neck.
Carefully and without taking his eyes off of Naraku, Sesshoumaru began to tuck the small bottle of shards away; irritated that the small object had exposed his plan too early.
“That is none of your concern, worthless half-breed,” Sesshoumaru stated icily as he raised his glowing sword; preparing to attack Naraku with Tokijin’s Dragon Strike.
However, just when Sesshoumaru was going to unleash his attack, Inuyasha furiously unleashed his.
“Like hell it isn’t my concern…Wind Scar!” Inuyasha shouted heatedly as he swung Tetsusaiga in Sesshoumaru’s direction.
Expertly and with the aristocratic elegance that only he could possess, Sesshoumaru quickly dodged Inuyasha’s Wind Scar attack just in the nick of time, but the Taiyoukai wasn’t cleared from trouble yet as he quickly spotted the angered wolf youkai above him; preparing to kick him with his jewel shard powered legs.
It happened nearly too fast for him to evade properly, so as a quick defense, Sesshoumaru raised his sword above his head and barely stopped Koga’s attack as his foot connected on top of the sword; the sheer intensity of the kick and Sesshoumaru’s deflect was enough to cause a massive crater on the surrounding ground.
The Taiyoukai watched from a distance as Naraku smirked and was slowly retreating away into the night sky. Irritably, Sesshoumaru used a quick burst of Tokijin’s energy to push Koga off of his raised sword and proceeded to charge after Naraku in full speed.
His chance of safely obtaining the Kamiken was beginning to slip away…
Sesshoumaru was only halfway there to catch Naraku when he spotted Koga running alongside of him out of the corner of his eye. Just as quickly as he spotted the angered wolf youkai, Sesshoumaru quickly dodged another powerful whirlwind kick from Koga.
“Get out of my way,” Sesshoumaru growled angrily as the color red started to bleed into his eyes.
These fools were interfering and now Naraku was getting away because of it. It was beginning to make him livid.
“What did you do with my woman?!” Koga demanded furiously as began to launch himself at Sesshoumaru.
However, just when Koga had reached Sesshoumaru, he quickly moved out of the way as he saw Inuyasha in the distance beginning to unleash another attack.
“Backlash wave!” Inuyasha bellowed as his swung his heavy sword with all his might.
That bastard must’ve hurt Kagome in order to get those shards… Inuyasha concluded as he watched his massive attack head straight for Sesshoumaru.
I’ll make him pay.
Swiftly, Sesshoumaru raised Tokijin and simultaneously unleashed the Dragon Strike.
Instantly, the two attacks clashed magnificently and loudly, causing Koga to take cover behind a large moss covered boulder as the area around him was engulfed in a bright light while multiple lightning strikes dangerously rained down from the heavens; destroying the grassy earth around him.
Despite the immense power that had managed to destroy nearly everything around them, Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru held their own, with only minor cuts as damage to their bodies.
On the other hand, the only loss that was evident was that Naraku was now gone and completely out of sight.
Tiredly, although still enraged, Inuyasha impaled the ground with his large sword and used it as a clutch to prevent him from falling after using so much power within that time span.
Panting from exhaustion, Inuyasha glared murderously at his youkai half-brother.
“Where is she?” Inuyasha breathed.
Sesshoumaru didn’t bother to look at his half-brother as he dusted the debris off of his clothes.
“She is at home, where she belongs,” Sesshoumaru said tersely.
He was infuriated that Naraku had managed to get away and was even angrier at the fact that Inuyasha was to blame for it.
“At home?” Inuyasha repeated incredulously.
Did Kagome decided to go back to her time, despite the impending battle with Naraku?
No, something about that didn’t seem right.
Sesshoumaru straightened himself as he returned Inuyasha’s glare.
The whelp deserved the painful truth now.
“Yes, home. Kagome belongs to me now and she is currently resting in preparation for birthing my heirs,” Sesshoumaru informed complacently.
Inuyasha felt the very little air he had managed to grasp in his lungs leave him, as Sesshoumaru’s words reached his ears.
At first, Inuyasha didn’t believe him. There was no way that a youkai that had despised humans so much would take one as his own mate, but then again, it was Sesshoumaru.
Sesshoumaru would do nearly anything to obtain power and Kagome was powerful, although mostly untrained…but to mate with her and have hanyou children?
Inuyasha narrowed his eyes suspiciously at Sesshoumaru.
“You’re lyin’. There’s no way you wanted her and even then, you’d wind up with hanyou as children, so why even bother?” Inuyasha spat as placed his clawed hand around Tetsusaiga’s hilt; in preparation for another attack.
This time, Sesshoumaru allowed a smirk to grace his striking features.
“I do not lie. Once again, you have underestimated Kagome’s worth. She is fully capable of providing me full-blooded youkai heirs, as she is the protector of the Shikon Jewel. Kagome is completely worthy of being my mate,” Sesshoumaru explained.
Entirely stunned, Inuyasha released Tetsusaiga’s hilt and as he did, the glowing red color began to bleed into his eyes as jagged stripes started to form on each of his cheeks.
Sesshoumaru didn’t bother to keep his inner youkai in check as he allowed his fury to course through his veins; his glowing red eyes shining brightly as he silently prepared himself.
He watched warily as a red-eyed Koga made his way back into the completely destroyed forest clearing. It was apparent that the wolf prince had heard everything and wanted to challenge the Taiyoukai for Kagome.
If it was a challenge of dominance that they had wanted, then it was going to be what they would get.
Kagome was the prize and he wasn’t going to let her go so easily.
Not to anyone…
Not ever.
It was going to be a huge bloodbath tonight and Sesshoumaru had no intention of holding back.
~*~*~
Kagome snapped her head up in the direction of her bedroom window as she dimly felt some sort of disturbance outside of the castle.
She couldn’t tell if it was near or far away, because of the large, powerful barrier that surrounded the castle. However, Kagome chose to ignore the feeling as she buried her head underneath her crossed arms; sobbing uncontrollably on the large futon that she had knelt beside.
Sango was dead and Kagome was part of the blame.
She had wanted to escape from this place so badly, that she briefly threw away the consequences and tried to escape regardless.
Her brief moment of selfishness had nearly cost her the life of her babies, but it did cost her the life of her best friend.
How could she have been so thoughtless and careless?
The hot, stinging tears never seemed to cease, even as Atsuko entered into the sleeping room to comfort her Lady, Kagome’s tears continued to flow freely.
Silently, Atsuko knelt beside her and placed a gentle hand on Kagome’s back.
At first, Atsuko had no idea what to say; it only seemed appropriate for her Lady to privately mourn her friend as much as she needed.
However, Atsuko knew she didn’t need to say anything as Kagome turned around and began to cry on Atsuko’s shoulder; Atsuko pulled her in a warm embrace as she held her.
This girl is really pure, even the tears she selflessly shed are pure. The poor girl, she’s been through too much in such a short time… Atsuko mused as she rubbed Kagome’s back soothingly.
Atsuko could feel the twins’ auras trying to sooth and calm their mother, but Kagome was too distraught to even notice.
It was going to take some time for Kagome to heal, but even then Atsuko wasn’t sure what other heartbreaks the future held for the young girl in her arms.
Only time would tell…
