A few minutes later found the entire group gathered in the clearing as Kagome faced Inuyasha. "Keh, you really think she is ready to fight me, Miroku?" he scoffed, not believing for a second that she was capable of such.
"That is what we intend to find out, Inuyasha," Miroku reminded for the third time now.
Kagome mocked back, all too eager to prove the arrogant half-demon wrong, "Come figure it out for yourself." An uncharacteristic smirk was plastered on her face. She was so going to enjoy this. It was high time she put him in his place with her own abilities rather than relying on Kikyo's rosary.
"Feh, just don't go running off crying when I prove you weak," he uncrossed his arms and casually walked towards Kagome as she rose her barrier. Their gazes met and she nodded, signaling she was ready. Inuyasha drew his fist back and struck the barrier head on, expecting it to shatter with ease, but instead got thrown back. The look of shock on the dog's face was priceless.
"That all you got?" Kagome called to him, she barely felt that and honestly wanted to know just how much she could resist. The best way to get him to really test her was to taunt him.
He lept back at her, claws raised as he began cycling through his basic attacks, trying now to prove his strength to her. Every one of his attacks had the same result, casting him away from her barrier with equivalent force.
Inuyasha was getting very frustrated, the weak little human girl who he had to rescue countless times was making him seem weak in comparison to her. He was the alpha, he was supposed to be the strongest, his demonic side did not like this one bit. Deciding to put an end to this non-sense in short order, he went to his end-all option, Tessaiga. The sword transformed immediately and he caught Kagome's eyes widen. 'Good,' he thought, 'she still knows I'm stronger.' He pushed off from the ground, intent on regaining his pride.
Kagome's eyes had widened in slight worry, but not due to Inuyasha, she trusted he'd never actually hurt her. Rather, she felt some jewel shards approaching quickly. The situation she was in however, prevented her from focusing on how many or how far away, in favor of protecting herself. The jewel shards could wait, she decided, as Inuyasha flew through the air, coming at her with Tessaiga raised.
She clamped her eyes closed, using all her focus on repelling the powerful demon sword, just waiting to feel it strike the swirling, holy powers that made up her barrier. When nothing came, she peeked her eyes open. Inuyasha was not in front of her. 'Where'd he go?' she wondered, then heard an excessive amount of snarling and angry growling coming from a good fifty feet to her right.
Chapter 10:
(A/N: I have nothing against any of the characters, but I can't make ALL of them perfect. Wouldn't have much of a story that way.
Underlined text is conversations in the canine tongue, consisting of barks, yips, and growls.
This chapter took so long because right before I was "due" to post I got a new idea for this chapter and it took me awhile to get it just right. Forgive me. *Grovels pathetically.*)
A few minutes prior, Kouga, still searching for Naraku, caught Kagome's scent and altered his course to pay her a visit. His two comrades were quickly left in the dust as he increased his speed. What he saw in the clearing occupied by their group instantly enraged him. There was Kagome, his woman, standing defensively, as mutt-face attempted to strike her down with that hair-raising sword of his. He couldn't believe the worthless hanyou would stoop so low as to attack a defenseless woman, one the idiot claimed to care about nonetheless.
Now, if Kouga had had the time to be more observant, he would have noticed three very important details. One, Kagome was surrounded by a barrier. Two, she did not look to be panicked as she should be if she was actually in danger. And three, Inuyasha was not aiming directly at her, but rather, right next to her, in case he actually did break the barrier encasing her.
Having missed all this however, he kicked up his speed, intent on saving her, and just as Inuyasha was about to strike, he was tackled by a very angry wolf.
Inuyasha was taken by complete surprise, not having even had the chance to scent Kouga before he was roughly brought to the ground, pinned on his belly by his rival. Something was different about Kouga this time though, the mangy wolf's whole demeanor screamed unbridled rage. He was furious beyond his ability to speak the common language, instead reverting to growling in his canine tongue. Inuyasha, and to a small degree, Shippo, were the only ones able to understand the conversation.
"What the hell do you think you're doing attacking my Kagome, mutt?" Kouga growled menacingly, ready to flay the dog beneath him.
"None of you're business, wolf cub," Inuyasha barked, literally barked, back at him. "Now get the hell off me before I decide to kill you." Kouga snarled back, unsatisfied at his answer, and the two began scrapping violently.
This was how Kagome found them. Assuming that Inuyasha started the fight like usual, she fearless ran between them, screaming to knock it off. When the two separated, then lunged back to attack again, she decided to end this rougher than usual argument with a firm, "Sit!" Kouga was still baring his fangs at the prone pup, but ceased attacking since Kagome stood between them. "What is going on between you two now?" she accused, irritated with all the animosity.
Kouga had yet to return to speaking normal, growling a low, inaudible to human ears growl, "I knew I shouldn't have trusted you with her." His gaze never shifted from the one he believed had attempted to harm his 'intended.'
Popping up out of his hole, the sit enchantment finally wearing off, Inuyasha ranted irately to Kagome, "What was that for? I didn't do anything."
She turned towards him, "You where fighting again. Now tell me why." Her tone left no room for anymore stalling, the threat of more 'sits' if he didn't answer lingering in the air.
Inuyasha huffed, sitting up, "Wolf boy there, thinks I was trying to hurt you." Kagome turned to see that Kouga was still scowling.
She thought about it, a finger placed on her chin, realizing that it could have been easily seen as such. She giggled, her calm behavior finally getting through and making Kouga relax his stance. "I was training, Kouga," she reassured with a smile. "Inuyasha would never hurt me."
"Training?" he repeated, still trying to grasp what he thought he saw.
"Yeah," she confirmed, "so I'll be able to defend myself against Naraku."
Now Kouga did not like the thought of Kagome having any need to defend herself. That's what mutt-face was supposedly for, and he let this be known. This turned into more of the typical scrapping and insults between the two canine rivals. Seeing that they had no intention of actually harming one another this time, Kagome left them be as her mind wandered off.
'It won't be long now,' she reassured herself, calming the again rising ire. 'All I have to do is face him and show Inuyasha that he can't break my barrier. I'm sure if I 'accidentally' blurt out that I'll get my freedom back if I am able to defend myself, that Naraku will get the idea and play along. I think. He's definitely intelligent enough to connect the dots. I'll need to get him to show though, maybe through Tamari? And then, I'll be able to see him again.' She shuddered thinking about the possibilities that could bring.
Kouga stopped mid insult when the most alluring scent drifted to his nose. It was Kagome's scent, and she was... aroused. He'd never smelled that on her before. It was utterly intoxicating. 'This must mean she is reaching maturity,' he thought excitedly to himself. 'Won't be long until she's ready for me.' He couldn't wipe the grin from his face. Forgetting all about Inuyasha, he sprinted back over in front of Kagome, who had her eyes closed, a smirking smile on her face as she enjoyed her impure thoughts.
Lost to her daydream, Kagome was oblivious to Kouga's proximity. Bypassing his typical gesture of grabbing her hands, he instead followed his instincts and brought his nose a hairs breadth from her neck. He breathed in deeply of her scent, letting it flow through him. She smelled even more enticing with the tinge of arousal. He could only assume he was the cause of her change of scent, it had occurred during his visit, afterall. He always believed it was only a matter of time before Kagome would tire of Inuyasha and turn to him. Now that she was maturing, he would need to be extra vigilante lest another male make a move to claim her. It was a good thing Inuyasha was blind to her feelings and changes, otherwise he might actually be a threat. The human blood dampened Inuyasha's instincts, instincts that ran strongly in himself.
Kagome suddenly became aware of a tickling sensation at her neck. She opened her eyes a bit, then snapped them wide when she noticed the long, black ponytail, unmistakably belonging to Kouga, right in front of her vision. 'Too close,' was her only thought before something warm, wet, and textured ran up the length of her neck, leaving behind a cold trail. 'Did he... did he just... lick me?' Kagome was frozen with shock. Kouga never did anything more than talk big and grab her hands. What was with this sudden behavioral change?
Before she could think this through any further, a blur of silver and red removed the wolf from her person. Kagome was shaken out of her shocked stupor by a very concerned slayer, checking Kagome over, her neck especially, for any kind of mark from the presumptuous wolf. Seeing nothing, she relaxed, deciding she'd fill her naive friend in later.
"What the hell do you think you were doing to Kagome, you mangy wolf?" Inuyasha snarled. Seeing Kouga so close to Kagome brought back unwanted thoughts about the last male that got too close to her, Naraku. He did not like all this attention that was suddenly being thrust upon her. Sure, he had Kikyo, but he wasn't ready to let go of Kagome either. She was his, just as Kikyo was his, and no other was going to take her away.
"I don't expect a half-breed like you to understand such things, Mutt," he retorted back, unphased.
"You will not touch her. Never again," he demanded, snarling and barely containing the desire to shred the insolent flea-bag.
"You know, if she didn't like it, she could have pushed me away," he stated off-handedly, that comment really got under his rival's skin.
Inuyasha didn't want to hear this, didn't want to even think that Kagome could have liked it. It was impossible in his mind. Kagome was, is, and always will be, his and his alone.
"You go near Kagome again and I'll gut you, ya hear?" Inuyasha growled, baring his fangs.
"Like you could do anything to me," Kouga nearly laughed back. Then, all but ignoring the disgruntled puppy, he hollered over to Kagome, "See ya around Kagome! I caught Naraku's scent awhile ago, I'll have his head for ya in no time." His whirlwind enveloped him as he sped off in his typical fashion.
Just grateful the nuisance had left, Inuyasha lept back over to Kagome, "What was all that about, kagome? Why'd you let him do-" He broke off his tirade when the lingering scent of arousal, Kagome's arousal, finally caught his attention. Inuyasha was floored, he couldn't fathom Kagome actually liking Kouga's advances. He felt betrayed, as if she had just slapped him. Unsure of what to say or do, he fled, leaving behind his extremely confused companions. If only he knew her arousal had absolutely nothing to do with Kouga, and everything to do with someone even worse in his mind.
"What was that mess all about?" Kagome muttered to herself, unsure what had the two of them suddenly behaving so strangely.
"I'm not sure about Inuyasha," Sango started explaining, "but I need to talk to you about Kouga, Kagome."
"About Kouga?" Kagome repeated, thinking his actions were the harder of the two to interpret. "What about him?"
"Well, I checked you over, so he didn't actually do anything, but you shouldn't let him get that close," Sango stated carefully. "You see, when a demon takes a mate, they will mark them, usually by biting their neck. It looked like Kouga might have been attempting such with you." Kagome gasped, completely abhorred at the thought of Kouga trying that when she didn't want him. No way would she want to be tied down to him. "If a demon does mark you, it's permanent, there is no way, except death, to get out of it."
Kagome shuddered, thoroughly disgusted. Never would she let him get that close to her again. This might even be grounds enough to turn him down harshly, whatever it takes to get through his stubborn skull. But that was a thought for later. More pressing was Inuyasha's strange retreat. Kagome's mind worked furiously, trying to unravel this newest mystery? 'Maybe he was worried I was about to 'sit' him? No, he never runs from that. Probably upset from Kouga's actions, but that usually results in yelling, not running away.' She sighed, it was useless trying to understand him sometimes. He'd return when he calmed down, and then they could talk.
Kagome was still sitting and waiting for Inuyasha as darkness started to cloak the earth. She'd exhausted her mind trying to figure out her confusing friend, and coming up with nothing. A bright glint caught her eyes, she turned quickly to find what it was from. The sight before her was awe-inspiring. Tamari stood in the open, face turned towards the sun, wings outstretched, catching the last rays of warmth. The rapidly changing angle of light caused her wings to sparkle brilliantly before vanishing behind the trees, not to appear again until next morning.
A breathy "Wow" was the only word that managed to pass Kagome's dropped jaw. Her breathy whisper did not escape the sensitive hearing of the demoness, who in turn, turned to face her... friend? Rival? She still wasn't sure what she thought about the little human girl. Kagome caught her questioning gaze and suddenly remembered that she had a request for Tamari. "Oh yeah, Tamari," Kagome motioned for her to come closer, she didn't want to risk the others hearing her. Luckily, Sango was too preoccupied fending off a certain monk's 'cursed' hand and Shippo was laughing at the situation. "Do you think you can get Naraku to confront us Tomorrow?" Her expression was hopeful, hands clasped in a pleading manner as she waited with bated breath.
"Why?" was the flat, but not quite cold, answer she got. Tamari knew that Kagome had been training under the guise of being able to 'defend' herself against Naraku, but she wasn't sure that she wanted to assist her. Her question was only to stall for time while she thought about her options. On one hand, decline, but if Naraku found out she was trying to hinder him, he'd be angry with her. The other option was to agree, but that would drive the figurative wedge even further between her and her dark master. It was a lose-lose situation.
"Well, if I can defend-" Kagome's explanation was interrupted.
"Inuyasha, you're back," Shippo chirped over the camp. "Why'd you run off like that?"
"Shut it, runt!" Inuyasha barked, still fuming from his imagined slight.
"Please, Tamari," Kagome begged in a whisper one last time. "I can't explain right now," she tilted her head towards Inuyasha, hoping her meaning was conveyed.
Tamari sighed heavily, but silently and gave Kagome a quick, affirmative nod. A figurative wedge was better than being the cause of anger in Naraku, by a long shot. After thanking her profusely, the girl skipped away, over to confront the not so happy dog.
Naraku, ever aware of both demon and human affairs couldn't help but notice the unusually cruel tactics of a certain lord's army. The Lord himself was rather apathetic to anyone's well being but his own, but his general was a sadist in every sense of the word and reveled in the suffering and misery he caused. He was nearly Naraku's equal in that capacity. While commanded to merely defeat a rival lord, he would take it much further and obliterate entire villages, no matter their hospitality, for the pure pleasure of it. He also had a nasty tendency of enslaving the woman and children for personal uses.
While none of these acts bothered Naraku, having enjoyed similar pleasures himself as both the human bandit Onigumo and the half-demon Naraku, he knew Kagome would be absolutely sickened to learn of it. With proper coaxing, he was confident that he could show her a situation where murder was acceptable and possibly even get her to join him in eliminating such scum. The thought of her wielding her powers alongside him and against humans stirred his desires for the pure priestess. He let his mind imagine taking her on the battlefield, their enemie's bodies strewn about, the blood splatter still wet across her face as she begged for him to dominate her. The adrenaline rush from the massacre only fueling their lusts. It would be a truly amazing feeling were he to corrupt her to such an extent.
"So, where to next boss?" a random soldier spoke up over the celebrating going on around him. Naraku was disguised as a foot-soldier is this army, discreetly directing them towards the object of his desire through a jewel shard that the general managed to 'wrest' from one of Naraku's inconsequential demons. These heartless slime would serve his purposes nicely.
"Yeah, general," a higher ranking official joined in, "we've nearly finished all the sake -hic- that we got from the castle." -hic-
"Not to mention that pathetic lord's concubines were fragile little things that have no more use," the sick pervert glanced towards the prison tent housing the few remaining women that hadn't succumbed to death, whether from the lack of sustenance, exposure to elements, or the brutal rapes they were subjected to day and night.
"There is a village only a few days from here," Naraku's smooth voice offered a solution. He was seated in a shadow that seemed to consume his form in comparison to the light cast by the flickering fires.
"Yeah?" the general perked up at the prospect of murder, food, wine, and women being so near. They had yet to cross over into his lord's lands, so every village outside those borders were essentially fair game. "And what does this village have to offer us?"
Naraku let a signature smirk grace his face knowing full well that this twisted mortal was already completely hooked, any more description was merely embellishments on the already forming plan. Humans were unfalteringly predictable.
