Chapter Twelve:
Creativity
Hoping to dodge easily once more, Kouga did not anticipate
the second fire blast thrown his way.
It would have singed his arm had he not enough sense to twist his body
to resemble a cat trying to right itself to land on its feet.
Which he did.
He turned to look at the woman attacking him and had to
suppress a gasp. Had she not been
attacking him with the element of fire, or the small fireballs in her hands, he
would have easily mistook her for Kagome.
He almost had when he’d arrived… but then she’d attacked him and set him
straight immediately.
She wore pants that resembled those of the mutt; however, she
had no shirt. Only a piece of cloth
that covered her chest. He also noted
that though she was trying to kill him, she looked attractive with her
turquoise eyes alight with an internal rage.
A rage directed at him, no less.
Kagome rushed to the woman’s side and spoke hurriedly lest
the enraged woman burn him alive where he sat crouched on the ground waiting to
leap away again.
“Ota-chan, wait!” Kagome said desperately as she placed her
hands on the woman’s arm, “That’s Kouga-kun, and he’s a friend!”
The fireballs in Leota’s hands disappeared and her eyes went
from turquoise back to emerald only to change once more to the color of jade.
“What sort of friend approaches a village without first
announcing himself?”
“Uh… Kouga-kun just isn’t that way. Never has been, really.
Just trust me on this, Ota-chan, he’s my friend.”
“But shouldn’t you turn your attentioo Ino Inu-Yasha rather
than this… person?”
Kagome blushed but kept her voice from shaking by stating
pointedly, “Inu-Yasha has…. issues he needs to deal with.”
It was Inu-Yasha’sn ton to look away, his bangs covering his eyes.
Not liking the fact that he was being ignored, Kouga made his
way towards Kagome and put his hand on her shoulder. The dark-haired, flame-throwing, jade-eyed woman shot him an icy
glare that contradicted her fiery abilities.
And was that a… growl he heard?
Who was this woman?
He decided to ask, “So, Kagome-chan, who is this?”
Before Kagome could say anything, the woman answered, “You
may call me Shi-sama, thank you very much.”
Shi? Well, Kouga very
much doubted that she wished to be named after the number four, and he couldn’t
see her calling herself ‘poem’ or ‘city’.
So that left…
“Death? She wants
me to call her death?”
“That’s right.” She
confirmed.
“Does she read minds, too?!”
“No, just faces. And
eyes. Eyes are the windows to the soul,
don’t you know?”
“Ah, so you’re like Tora-kun.” Kagome smiled.
“Actually, Tora picked that up from me. I’ve been reading eyes and faces for
years. Comes with the job.”
“Job, Ota-chan?” Kagome asked, “I didn’t know you had a job.”
Eyes widening, the woman covered mouth and closed her eyes,
reminding Kouga of a child that seems to have spoken too much.
“Dammit! Of all
the slip-ups to make!” Leota thought, mentally beating herself with a large
tree branch, “It’s nothing, K-chan, really.
Just a job that grows to become monotonous after a while. The only thing that really changes is the
salary and the… customer.”
Sensing that Leota was hiding something from her, Kagome
decided to harp on her later and change the subject, “Anyhow, Kouga-kun, this
is Leota. Ota-chan, this is Kouga-kun
of the Wolf Demon Tribe.”
Leota quirked an eyebrow, “Wolf Demon Tribe?”
Had he had ears like the mutt’s they would have drooped,
“Well, it’s not much of a tribe anymore.
Just three wolf demons and a pack of wolves.”
“I see,” Leota said, wondering how it got to be that way,
“well anyway, I’m not gonna let you call me Ota-chan, but I suppose I can’t
have you going around calling me Shi-sama, Sama-sama, or even my first name…
not yet. You have to earn that one.”
“So then what may call you?” Kouga prompted.
“Ookami-san, and nothing else. Since you are a wolf demon, ugh, ugh, I suppose I could let
you call me Ookami-chan, but that’s only if you take your hand off of K-chan
right now and not touch her again for the rest of the day.”
Kouga immediately removed his hand, and smiled boyishly,
“Better?”
“Much better!
See? You’re improving already!”
Where he stood, Inu-Yasha thanked whatever God was smiling on
him for sending him Leota and her terms for friendship.
Kouga even went as far as to step back a few feet from
Kagome. Which was the right move to
make if he wanted Leota’s approval.
Feeling very odd at the moment, Kagome decided to just shake
it out of her head. That’s when a
thought came back to her.
“Hey Ota-chan?”
“Hm?”
“Back when I was mad at you, I was talking to Tora-kun and we
were talking about secrets and that everyone has them. Then he said, ‘I could be a serial killer
for all you know, playing with you to my heart’s content. Or maybe I’m gay and hide it really well’…”
“He what?!”
Kagome shrugged, “That’s what he said. Then, he went to say that he wasn’t gay, but
he never denied being a serial killer.
It slipped my mind before, but it just came back to me.”
“Note to self: suspend Tora over a cliff upside down while
a candle flickers at the rope,” Leota forced a smile and a giggle, “don’t
be silly, K-chan! You know Tora, always
the joker.”
Kagome nodded, another thought suddenly entering her mind,
“Then, when you were Kyo, you said, ‘For surely, Kenkichi, are you not
second only to me?’ I just remembered
that, too. What did you mean,a-cha-chan?”
“Second note to self: run self into tree hard enough to
put self into a three year coma,” Leota thought, as she once again forced
her face to perform a task it was not made for: smiling, “c’mon, K-chan! Who do you take me for? We were just talkin’ about stuff. It doesn’t mean anything, really. Anything else?”
“Actually, just one more thing.”
“Oh no. What else
did Tora blab?” Leota thought, dreading the words to next come from
Kagome’s mouth.
“Nice sports bra.”
Leota blinked and looked down, “Oh! I must’ve forgotten my shirt back at Kaede-sama’s when I was
cutting wood! I was in such a hurry to
leave that I totally forgot about it!”
“Uh-huh, sure.”
Kagome said slyly.
“I did! Really!”
Leota defended, “Which reminds me, I think Kaede-sama said that my shirt was
clean.”
“Well hurry up and go get it so you don’t give Miroku any
ideas!”
At the mention of his name and the hint of ‘ideas’, Miroku
moved a little closer to Leota. Sango’s
Hiraikotsu moved as well: right beside his head.
Leota smiled, the first human expression Kouga had seen on
her face, “Hai! I’ll go get it. Where are all of you gonna be?”
“Probably around Kaede’s or somewhere near there. I know Inu-Yasha wowantwant us going
anywhere else.”
“Okay!” Leota said cheerily, her face adopting a serious
expression in an instant as she pointed at Kouga, “Just remember that you
promised to not lay one hand on her.
Whether it be of your imagination or your actual hand. You will not touch my K-chan, got it?”
Kouga nodded, “I give you my word.”
“And I shall hold thee to thy word.” Leota said somewhat darkly as she smiled at
Kagome and went off towards the hut where she’d cut firewood not too long ago.
Kouga turned to Kagome, “Is that woman human?”
Kagome quirked an eyebrow, “Of course she is. Why would you think she wasn’t?”
“She just doesn’t… feel human.”
“Huh?”
“He does have a point, Lady Kagome. Surely you’ve noticed that she and Inu-Yasha have certain
qualities that are similar, if not identical?”
Miroku inquired.
“Yeah, I have. Her
and Sesshomaru hold some similar qualities, too.”
“That’s not all!” Came a new voice as Tora appeared as though
from nowhere, “From what Kaede-sama’s been telling me, Ookami-sama and this
Naraku guy have some alike traits, too.”
Everyone stared at him as they chorused, “What?!”
“They’re both known to result to trickery to get what they
want. It appears that Naraku does it
all the time, but Ookami-sama only uses trickery for good purposes.”
“Like what?”
Inu-Yasha demanded, sheathing Tetsusaiga now that he was sure Leota
would turn Kouga to ashes if he even looked at Kagome the wrong way.
Tora suddenly got an evil calculating look in his eyes,
“Ookami-sama only resorts to trickery when playing the game that matters most.”
“And just what game is that, Tora?” Kagome asksounsounding as though she’d punch
him if he didn’t spill the news in a second.
“The dating game!”
Tora said cheerfully as his face split into a smile.
All anyone could do was blink at him confusedly for several
minutes.
The smile still on his face, Tora thought, “They’re
looking at me as though I’ve suddenly grown a tail, two more heads, another
eye, and an arm sticking out of my chest.
Hehe, that’s the same look Ookami-sama gave me when…”
His musings were interrupted when aforethought Ookami-sama
appeared, wearing a dark blue tube top and her traditional baggy jeans.
“Sorry it took me so long.”
She said, a smile on her face as she jogged up to them.
“What happened to your shirt?”
“It was too ripped up to be worn as a shirt anymore, Tora,
I’m sorry. I had to cut and trim it so
much that I decided to just make it into this.”
“But… that…”
“I’ll buy you another one, I promise!”
“B-But…”
“But what?” Leota demanded,
hands on her hips.
“What are you wearing underneath?” Miroku asked.
Tora nodded, “What he said.”
Sango, Leota, and Kagome looat eat each other and nodded, but
it was a small nod that no one but themselves saw.
Leota ran her tongue along her lips once, her fists clenched
at her sides.
“You boys wanna know what I’m wearing under this?” She asked innocently.
Kouga immediately noticed that the energy this woman Leota
emitted had become more ‘inhuman’ to him.
It felt as though it held a certain… demonic quality about it.
“Yes.” Miroku and
Tora nodded.
Leota turned to Kagome and Sango, “You hear that? They wanna know what I’m wearing
underneath. You two think I should show
them?”
“Yes.” Miroku
interrupted.
He was surprised when Sango made no move to hurt him.
Inu-Yasha was surprised too.
Sango always went to hurt the monk. So whas sas stopping her this time? He sniffed the air cautiously.
And cringed.
“Leota smells… different,” Inu-Yasha thought, “that’s
the same thing I smelled right before… uh-oh.”
Oh yes, Inu-Yasha knew that smell. He was surprised that Miroku hadn’t noticed the sudden rise in
Leota’s aura.
“Hey Inu-Yasha!”
“Huh? What?” Inu-Yasha turned to Leota, for it had been
she to address him.
“Did you wanna know, too?”
He shook his head violently, “No way!”
Leota’s face showed disappointment, but her eyes held
amusement, “You learned the first time, huh?”
“First time?” Tora questioned, “Inu-Yasha, you’ve seen
Ookami-sama naked? Why didn’t you tell
me?!”
“My, my, Tora-kun, I had no idea you were such a pervert,”
Leota smiled, “do you know what I do to perverts?”
“Undress them with your eyes, like what you see, undress
them, and have your way with them at any and all times of the day or
night?” Tora suggested hopefully.
“Hmm, no, sorry.”
“Dammit.” Tora
muttered.
“Do you wanna know what I do to them, Tora-kun?”
“Well if it’s not that, then no.”
“Oh but it’s much better than that,” Leota
said, as she saw glints of interest in both Miroku and Tora’s eyes, “for me,
anyway.”
At that simple statement, Tora blanched. His brain had finally started working and he
remembered what had transpired between Ookami-sama and a different pervert…
He sat in the shadows, as he always did when Ookami-sama
went out during her rounds. He had the
night off this evening, so he’d decided to watch her to see what he needed to
work on. He’d noticed that she was in
high demand these days, everyone wanted her.
She was among the best in their line of work.
She’d stopped at an old, rottingr wir with a slat about a
foot from the top.
“Who are you and what do you want?” Someone on the other side snapped.
“Name’s Ookami now let me in.”
The door swung open immediately.
“This way.” The
man said in a timid voice, a complete contrast to the way he’d greeted her.
Ookami followed the man inside, and Tora followed
Ookami. Hell, being one of the best, she
knew he was there. Of course, he
was one of the best, too. He was second
only to her, and he wanted to figure out why.
That’s why he was out in the alleys at midnight.
She’d been seated at a round table with six chairs. Soon, four men came in around a fifth
figure. The fifth member sat down
first, and the other four followed suit.
“Who am I gettin’ and what’s my pay?” She’d asked as soon as they had all taken
their seats.
The leader chuckled, “You don’t waste time, do you,
Ookami?”
“No, I don’t.
Wasting time here means less time to do my job later.”
“Wise words coming from one so young.”
“I’m twelve, perfectly old enough to be in the business,”
Ookami snapped, “now answer my question.”
“We want you to find a man that goes by the name ‘Calor
Loco’.
“He calls himself ‘Crazy Heat’?” Ookami asked as she raised an eyebrow.
The leader shrugged, “Hey, we don’t make up the names;
they do.”
Ookami nodded, “How many?”
“Well, there’s Calor Loco himself, and then he’s got about
six followers.”
“That’s not what I asked.
I asked, ‘How many?’. I didn’t
ask for a break down of who was who.
Six plus one equals seven. Don’t
mahis his more complicated than it has to be.
Hell, if this is how you run things back at your base, it’s no wonder
you have to call me in.”
The leader actually blushed, much to his and his
follower’s surprise, “Heh, no wonder I get in so much trouble with the wife!”
“Yeah, well, I can’t do anything about that,”
Ookami said, allowing herself to chuckle, “so how much am I gettin’ for these
seven?”
“Let’s see, we decided that it would be fifty grand a
head, so that’s three hundred fifty thousand.”
“Heh, you gave me more last week. And last week I only downed four. I’ve heard that this Calor Loco supplies
little kids, too. What if I told you I
wanted twice that much?”
“One hundred thousand a head?! But that would make your total seven hundred thousand! This is dollars we’re talking about,
not yen!”
Ookami gave a true wolf smile, “I know.”
One of the followers stood and pointed a gun to Ookami’s
chest, “Why you…!”
He stopped when he discovered she was nowhere to be
seen. Strange, she’d been sitting in
the seat right in front of him. He was
suddenly aware of something cold at his neck.
“They don’t call me Phantom Wolf for nothin’, you
know? Even if that nickname has died
down a little. They seem to really like
Blue Moon and Lone Wolf. But of course,
even those two aren’t quite as popular as they were last month.”
“What’s popular this month?” The leader asked.
“Thanks mostly in part to that damned goody-goody news
reporter, one of my targets lived long enough to tell her that just before his
side was cut, he saw a flash of silver.
So the new nickname I’ve unintentionally acquired is Silver Death,”
Ookami explained, still holding her sword to the follower’s neck, “and believe
you me, it has nothing to do with this pretty silver sword.”
She was gone again and was soon seen sitting in her seat
once more.
“Anyhow,” the leader said, motioning for his follower to
sit down, “we’ll pay you seven hundred thousand if you get the job done in
under an hour.”
The wolf smile was back on her face as she stood and
extended her right hand, “Done.”
The leader and Ookami shook hands and as soon as they let
go, a young kid followed by six of his friends busted the door down.
“All right! This
is it! We heard there were gonna be
cops here, and there they are!” The leader shouted, pointing his two guns at
the five men at the round table, “Put your guns down! And if you wanna know why, it’s because Calor Loco said so!”
The five at the table quickly lay their guns on the floor
and kicked them over to the six in the doorway.
There was a cracking sound, followed by another that
sounded like someone had ripped a piece of paper. When Calor Loco turned to look behind him, he saw his six friends
had been torn apart by… something.
“You know, you should have instructed everyone to put
their weapons down, because the whole gun thing doesn’t apply to we who
have swords,” came a girl’s voice as she hung upside down from a rafter, “and
you know what? You get to die now.”
Still upside down, the girl drew her sword and threw
it. The sword made a arc and went
around him like a boomerang until it made its’ way back to her, blade
glistening ruby red with his blood.
He opened his mouth to protest, but no sound came out as
he fell to the floor.
Letting herself drop from the rafters, Ookami wiped her
blade on Calor Loco’s shirt and sheathed it at her side. She then walked over his body and casually
made her way back to the table, acting like nothing had happened.
“Uh…” The leader
bega Ook Ookami looked at her watch.
“Do I get a bonus for getting rid of them in less than
fifteen minutes? My watch shows
thirteen,” Ookami stated flatly, her voice holding none of the amusement it had
held a few minutes ago, “c’mon, what are you waiting for? Pay up!”
That had been five years ago, back when he and Ookami-sama
were just about inseparable. He had
been fourteen and she had been twelve.
Now she was seventeen with beauty unmatched by any of the women he knew. Women he knew only by the fact that they
flocked around him like birds at a watering hole.
“Memories?” Came a
voice he’d grown to know all too well.
“Hai,” Tora said gravely, “memories of when I followed you to
that bar and you made your thirteen minute record.”
She seemed taken by surprise, but it was quickly hidden by…
regret perhaps?
“Yeah, well, you and I both know that I broke that record a
few nights later. From thirteen minutes
to eight. Then eight to six. And finally, six to three. After that, the minutes went uphill just
because I was too lazy to try and finish in a minute or less,” she paused to
sigh, “oh Tora, I never asked for this job!”
Leota fell to her knees and Tora was released from the
vines. He noticed that Miroku had also
been released, his hair standing on end again.
“Must’ve given him a shock again,” Tora thought as he
knelt to comfort his friend of many years, “hey, it’s all right. I know you didn’t ask for it, hell, I
didn’t either. But, here we are,
holders of the top two spots. We can’t
give it all up. Don’t you ever lay
awake at night and stare at your right hand thinking ‘I’ll show him! He wanted me to do this for the wrong
reasons, so now I’m gonna do it for all the good reasons’?”
“Of course I think that, Tora-kun. Every night, I think that.
They still haunt me. Those three
years when I did it for the wrong reasons.
And now, even though I’m doing it for the right reasons, I’m still doing
it. Can’t we ever just... quit?”
Tora sighed, then and hugged, “O, “Only when we die,
Ookami-chan, only when we die.”
She looked up at him then, a startled look in her eyes,
“You’ve never called me that before.”
“What? Ookami-chan?”
“Yeah, you’ve never called me that.”
“Would you rather I called you Ookami-sama?”
“No, no, no!
Ookami-chan is fine, Tora-kun.”
Leota said as she stood from his embrace.
Tora suddenly felt a shock go through his body, “Hey! What was that for?”
“For being such a pervert.”
Leota said, walking towards a confused-looking Kagome.
She blinked, “What was that all about?”
“Hm? What?”
“What are you still doing that you don’t like?”
Leota’s breath caught and she nearly choked on it, “You heard
that?”
“Of course I did.
Everyone did. And what’s this
about your right hand?”
“I can show her that, at least. She won’t know what it means,” Leota thought as she showed
Kagome the top of her right hand, “nothing much, K-chan, just an ‘x’.”
“What’s it mean?”
Leota shrugged, “It shows that my previous bastard of a boss
thought I was his property, so he burned this ‘x’ into my skin. But like I said before: he’s dead now.”
Kagome was confused. First,
she saw Leota come just a few centimeters away from bursting into tears, and
then she was acting as though nothing had happened.
Just who was this woman that looked exactly like her
childhood friend? How much did Kagome really
know about her? And how many secrets
was she keeping?
What happened to cause Leota to change so much? Sure she was always possessive, and she was
always cautious. But>But she had never been
able to summon fire like she could now.
In fact, she’d never had anything different about her except the fact
that she was always quiet.
And, though Kagome didn’t like the thought, Miroku,
Inu-Yasha, and even Kouga did have a point. Leota just didn’t feel human.
So then, what was she?
A/N: If you’re wondering just where
the creativity is, it’s in the way Leota tricks Tora & Miroku into getting
themselves into trouble. I had quite a time figuring out just where to
put it, and so I decided that her questions would have to be it. Hope yoke
ke
it!
