The differences between the two realms were vast and very obvious. Oddly colored skies and seas, demon cities and forests as far as the eye could see. Sesshoumaru and Youko stood before the shimmering portal, a cape draped Lilian between them. “What the hell is that?” she demanded, looking at the forbidding world beyond. “That is Makai” Youko answered, “The place where we are going”. Lilian felt the shivers wrack her body. That was one place she had no desire to go. Ever. Some part of her, some primal part understood that this was not a place for her. She shook her head, backing away from that otherworldly corridor. “No” she whispered, “I can’t”. Violet eyes wide with fear, she resisted their coaxing gazes. Youko moved behind her, blocking her retreat, his clawed hands moving to her upper arms to steady her. “It’s alright” he soothed. She flinched. “That is not a place for me. I am not going” she insisted, her voice firm. Sesshoumaru stepped in front of her, blocking her view of Makai with his silk clad for. “Look at me” he commanded. She did so, slowly lifting stricken orbs to his. He read her fear but they had no time to lose. “You will come through the boundary to Makai with us now”. She shook her head again, out of sight a large explosion sounded out. Youko looked back, “They are attacking the barrier Sesshoumaru” he said. Lilian blinked, “This is why we are leaving?” she asked. “I told you we would be attacked” Sesshoumaru growled to her. She sucked in a breath, “Yeah, but I thought we had more time” she argued. Sesshoumaru lifted his hand before her face, his nails taking on a faintly green hue. “Time is up Mekharat” he warned, “Decide now. Walk of your own free will or be carried like a sack of rice. One way or the other you are going”. His voice was hard, unyielding and brooked no argument. Lilian’s spine stiffened to the point of snapping, her lips set in a mutinous line. Youko gave her a small nudge and she turned to glare at him as well. “I hate you both” she growled, wrapping her cape closely about herself. Sesshoumaru grunted, turning to gaze at the barrier before him, lifting his hand the shimmering surface broke like water under the weight of a pebble. He stepped through, keeping a firm hold of her arm. She resisted still, but was no match for his great strength. Youko merely nudged her along from behind. She yelped as they breached the portal. It was like being stuck all over by icy needles. Not something she could say she enjoyed. She shut her eyes tightly, and gripped the silk of Sesshoumaru’s sleeve like a life line. His grasp on her wrist suddenly not enough to soothe her. Youko knew that it was a painful and frightening thing for humans to pass this gate. As the Mekharat it was likely worse and she had no way of using her powers to shield herself. Still, it wouldn’t kill her and neither he nor Sesshoumaru could erect a barrier here. It would alert any and all to their passing, as their powerful signatures were unique. The worst was yet to come, he knew. “Prepare yourself” Sesshoumaru barked as demonic wind began to swirl around them, the dark of it blocking what lay beyond. Lilian pressed tightly against him and he dropped an arm around her to anchor her in the rising fury of the wind. Then they rose into the air, carried by the winds themselves. She wanted to shriek from the weightless feeling, but one of them had covered her mouth. Bastards, both of them. The wind snapped around them, buffeting them in what seemed an eternity. Near her she was vaguely aware of the soft glow emanating from Youko as he sought to drive the winds closer to their intended destination. Lilian had no way of knowing that, she could only cling to her guardians and pray the madness ended soon, before she disgraced herself by puking on them. “Gonna be sick” she managed to blurt out. The winds stopped, as quickly as they had begun. They now stood at the far edges of a deep forest. She blinked, trying to push her hood back to see better. Sesshoumaru’s hands covered hers, “Do not uncover” he told her, “The cloak conceals you Mekharat, from more than merely eyes. You must leave it in place until we reach the den of Youko”. His voice was low, his manner alert. “Den?” she asked in a whisper, ‘Why can’t they just call it a house for crying out loud?’. Youko chuckled behind her, “Because it is a den, as I am a fox” he replied. She blinked. Of course he was a fox, when had she stopped thinking of him as an animal, as a demon? She had no time to ponder it, for Sesshoumaru was moving them through the tangled vegetation and deeper into the darkness. She followed him quickly and precisely, her lessons with the silver fox all to clear in her mind. Plants in Makai were dangerous. As dangerous as any opponent that might hunt them. Youko was using small bursts of energy to communicate with the plants they passed. Making certain any sign of their passing was hidden away and erased under the movements of roots and vines. It seemed like an eternity that they walked. Tense and prepared for attack at any time. Youko listened carefully to the plant life, they whispered to him of what else was in the forest. He stopped suddenly, causing his companions to draw up short. ‘What is it?’ Lilian asked in her mind. Youko shook his head, ‘Sesshoumaru do you feel that?’ he asked. The dog nodded, of course he did, ‘Twelve of them. Not very powerful but fast’ he replied. Youko pushed Lilian towards a large clump of ferns. ‘Wait here’ he commanded her. Sesshoumaru and Youko did not seem overly concerned about what was about to happen, but she felt the leaden weight of worry settle in her stomach. Sesshoumaru looked bored, and Youko merely leaned against a tree quite close to her. The rustling of underbrush alerted them to the movements of an unseen threat. “Are you ok Kagome?” Inuyasha called from the rooftops to the terrace just below. She had been holding the barrier for over an hour. Enough time for the others to flee to Makai. She nodded, her eyes narrowed in her concentration. Several minutes ago, Inuyasha had noticed that any youkai colliding with the barrier were purified. Yet another field test of hers he assumed. The numbers in the first waves had been overwhelming. They had knocked against the shield, causing it to crackle, thus draining power from the young priestess. She held on however, and knowing her limits had begun to pour purification into the shield. The number had dwindled considerably, buying her more time. Her whole body ached with the tremendous strain of holding the spell for so long, but she dared not falter. If she did, they would be overrun completely. She wasn’t about to let that happen. Inuyasha had released his windscar several times, Kagome allowing the barrier to thin just enough to release the blasts. They had to be careful, lest the youkai probe the barrier for weakness in those times. “Do you think they’ve made it?” she called up to him. He grunted, “By now? Yeah. Hey Kagome, they are leaving” he replied. Sure enough the many youkai were withdrawing, “They must sense that she isn’t here anymore” she offered. Inuyasha glowered at the skies, “Yeah. Either that or the mikos are coming”. Lilian nearly cried out when the creatures broke into the small clearing. Yellow flesh with sickly gray dapples covered the rough looking flesh, large yellowed fangs protruded from hideous mouths. She didn’t like this place at all. As one they focused on Sesshoumaru, who remained still and passive. With a melee of snarls and shrieks they lunged at him. Her eyes widened, tears flooding them. Why wasn’t Youko doing something? ‘Help him!’ she demanded of him. The fox actually yawned! ‘Why?’ he wanted to know, ‘This is nothing but an inconvenience to him’. She watched as Sesshoumaru lifted one elegant hand into the air, and a stream of green light burst forth. It snapped and hissed like a whip and he wielded it as such, slicing and snapping his foes into small tatters. It was over all too quickly, the forest floor littered with the remains of lesser beings. The light receded neatly into his claws and Sesshoumaru’s eyes narrowed. He smelled blood, the blood of the Mekharat. Youko was busily directing carnivorous plants to clean the area, when the dog’s growl reached his ears. He turned catching the delicate scent of her blood. His head whipped around to see Sesshoumaru towering over her, “You are injured” he stated. Lilian blinked, injured? She tasted it then, the metallic tang of her blood. She’d bitten her tongue to keep from crying out. “Open” Sesshoumaru ordered. She shook her head, swallowing, “I’m fine” she replied. She didn’t want to say that seeing him kill as he had unnerved her. ‘The scent of your blood will call to them” Youko told her. Her eyes moved between the fox and the dog. Not liking either one at the moment. Sesshoumaru grasped her jaw, “Open your mouth” he said again. Slowly, her jaw relaxed and her mouth opened. The marks were red and angry, oozing the crimson water of life. “You might have bitten it off and bled to death” he barked her at her. Lilian sucked in breath to give him a scathing set down, but she never got the chance. Sesshoumaru’s lips sealed over her own, stopping any words from escaping. His tongue gliding over the punctures, closing them. She ‘eeped’ at the contact, but his hold on her prevented her escape. Satisfied that the wounds were taken care of, he stepped back. He fought the urge to chuckle at her bemused and befuddled expression. “We must move on” he stated simply. Lilian went red, “What the? Who the? What do you think you are doing?” she managed to get out, “Kissing me like that?!”. Youko chuckled turning from her. Sesshoumaru lifted one brow, “I was merely seeing to your wound” he replied stonily, “This Sesshoumaru has not deigned to kiss you”. The unspoken ‘yet’ hung between them. She sputtered with indignation, but he knew it would be some time before she could actually reply. In the meantime, they had ground to cover. “Come on then” Youko called, his plant parting for him, revealing secrets paths. An hour passed, perhaps more. Lilian was tired and scared, she didn’t even try to keep track of how long or how far they walked. Twice more their progress was impeded and it seemed her odd guardians had opted to take turns when it came to killing. She was confronted with a very clear picture of what and who they really were. While it made her slightly uneasy that they could kill so quickly, so easily and walk away as if they’d done nothing at all. It also comforted her. They were on her side after all, she was safe. Wasn’t she? She’d always thought them both very pretty, seeing the skill with which they wielded various weapons, made them so much more than pretty now. ‘Snap out of it Lil’ she mentally berated herself, seeming to forget that her thoughts were known to them, ‘Bad, bad Lil. Don’t go there’. The strange sky was no longer visible when finally Youko called the halt. Before the thick bole of a large tree, they stood and Youko closed his eyes, commanding the entrance to his home to appear. Slowly, the wood shimmered, and seemed to become inconsistent. “This way” he said quietly, pulling her in after him. Once Sesshoumaru crossed the barrier, the wood became solid again and they were thrown into complete darkness. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
