“Miko.” He turns to me, looking at me with a softness I’ve only seen when he speaks with Rin, and my heart skips a beat. “Prepare yourself. It’s time.”
My arms grip tightly around Rin’s waist as we soar through the sky on Ah-Un’s back with Sesshomaru gliding next to us.
After I finished bathing we left quietly left to fight Zenaku. Once it finally hit me of what we are going to do, I became nervous as fuck. Sheer panic overtook me as we leapt into the skies, and I just about started to cry. That was when Rin laid a motherly hand over mine, telling me to be strong, do my best, and trust in her lord. Sesshomaru didn’t really say anything, just gave me a rock solid look that made me realize he believes in me. Some reason that says a lot. He’s always so sure of his decisions, and for him to believe in someone like me… well, it means something. I have decided to listen to Rin, trust in them, feed off of their confidence, and most important, make their resolve mine.
We have been making good timing, I think. At least we have traveled far really fast, so that’s got to be good. It’s about mid-day and we’ve gone three hours east of where we started, but since I don’t really know where it was we started from, I can’t say for sure I know where are or where we’re going. But from the way the way Rin went from peaceful and deep-in-thought to edgy and on-her-toes, I think we’re almost there.
Suddenly Sesshomaru makes his descent, and Ah-Un automatically follows without direction. We land in a small clearing with lush grass so tall a child could hide in it, surrounded by thick brush and trees. This should be a perfect place for animals to live, but I don’t even see any evidence of a bird. It’s too damn quiet.
“Time to get off.” Rin pats my hand gently. I let go of her and slide off the dragon’s back. She follows in suit.
“Your bow.” Sesshomaru looks at a me, only slightly irritated, and I follow the order, pulling my bow and quiver from Ah-Un’s side pack and slide them on.
Sesshomaru then points the dragon to the direction in which we just came, and it takes off, leaving us to finish this journey on foot.
“Ah-Un will wait for us.” He looks back towards our destination, scowling. “He is close.”
It is only then that I feel the strange aura creeping through the air. It’s strong, almost nauseating, and dark. Filled with an array of emotions ranging from hatred to sadness to joy. Not like any youkai I’ve felt before, who are normally good at keeping their emotions in check. This one puts off the vibe of an angsty teenager, except with the power to express said feelings violently. Kami help us if we’ve got an emo-youkai on our hands.
“Ah, what kind of youkai is it? And how old? It feels young.” I probably should have some knowledge of what I’m about to fight.
“He’s a scorpion youkai. And yes, he is young. About fifteen years.” Rin explains, as she secures her sword and fiddles with her protective shoulder pads, that remind me so much of my friend Sango.
“Fifteen, huh?” So we do have an unruly teenager to deal with. Great. Wait? Wasn’t that the time that Inuyasha was… went missing. “If he is only fifteen, then how did he supposedly kill Inuyasha fifteen years ago?”
Sesshomaru butts in and takes over Rin’s half of the conversation, she doesn’t seem to mind as she now works on her leggings.
“It was not born of one being, but of many.”
“Huh?” I literally scratch my head trying to figure that one out. How was it born of many?
“Have you forgotten Naraku already, Miko?”
“Duh, of course not.” I roll my eyes. How could I forget someone that caused so many so much pain?
“Kagome!” Rin gives me a death glare that I can only assume is for speaking to her lord so bluntly.
“Sorry.” I apologize to her, not him, but it seems to be enough for now and he continues.
“Like Naraku, this youkai was born from the fresh of many to create one. It has many of the same powers and abilities as the spider hanyou, but he lacks in the cunning that Naraku possessed. What Zenaku lacks in intelligence, he makes up for in strength. He is not a hanyou, but a full youkai.”
Wow, that was really weird. Having him state to facts about Naraku and giving him credit as the tricky foe he was instead of the normal, ‘filthy worthless hanyou’ crap that I was expecting from him. I get the feeling Sesshomaru has had to swallow a fair amount of pride in the last fifteen years. I won’t ask.
“Ok, so don’t try to take him on directly. Gotcha.” Damn I hope I’ve gotten better at staying out of the way. “So, what is the plan then?”
Rin’s head perk up and she huddles in for the game plan, “We’ll leave now, but we’ll travel apart. Rin, you will take her to a safe distance where she will have a clear shot. Someplace down wind and out of sight. I trust you can find a acceptable spot.” Her eye’s light up with pride at the praise.
“I will entertain Zenaku, and keep him busy…”
“Ha!” I can’t help but snicker at tough guy Sesshomaru playing bait so the girls can go unnoticed and kill the bad guy. Even the evil look I’m receiving, from both of them I might add, doesn’t phase the smile on my face.
“And you, Miko,” he continues, “Your job is to make this one shot. That’s all. Please do try contain your outbursts and do NOT mistakenly strike me in a fit of laughter.” I bite my lower lip to contain the next giggle and nod my head yes.
“Let’s go.” He heads into the forest, and we follow.
*********************************
It takes another hour on foot to reach the home of Zenaku. I look down at it from the tall rocky outcrop Rin decided would be the perfect sniper spot. With trees to our side and a clear view of the manor, I’d have to agree with her. It might not be really close, but I’m fairly certain I could hit a bull’s-eye from here. A target the size on a man shouldn’t be a problem.
The manor is large, probably was a human lord’s castle at one point. The obvious signs of neglect and wear are showing everywhere. The clay fence is crumbing, around missing large chucks, no longer keeping anyone at bay. The garden’s flowers are dead, and the pond is a nasty green. Unruly vines creep through the wood planks of the build and walkways, pulling them apart. Roof tiles have fallen and broken into pieces. Doors lay on the ground, unhinged, and pieces of paper from interior walls blow about in the wind. There’s not a soul around. It’s hard to imagine anyone living like this.
Sesshomaru stands at the broken gate to yard, waiting like someone’s going to come invite him in. He doesn’t make a move on the home, just stays patiently. Now that’s strange, Inuyasha would have charged the place by now, guns blazing.
After a few minutes the dark youkai aura from inside the home starts to pulsate. Slowly and first, then quickly picks up speed, sending wave after wave of a sickening evil feeling over us. It’s hard to breath. The waves pick up more speed and the energy becomes even heavy. It’s like he’s trying to scare us. It’s working on me at least.
Rin pushes my head to the ground as one of the walls of the castle blows out and rubble scatters over the yard. The youkai hits like a boiling tidal wave, burning my skin and stinging my eyes. I’m not sure if I instinctively hold my breath, or if it’s the pressure is keeping me from breathing, but I’m happy for it either way. I’m sure the heat would have blistered my lungs.
After the heat wave passes and the air temperature returns to normal, we cautiously peer over the side.
Sesshomaru is still standing, waiting, in exactly the same spot, looking very unimpressed by the extremely impressive display.
Slowly a tall dark figure emerges from the new door-way, and comes into clear view. He’s as tall as Sesshomaru, wearing a coal black hakama and blood red kimono. Tall boots and a white sword-less obi finishing off the intimidating look. He has short spiky, dark midnight blue, hair and his skin is an unnatural shade of ashy grey, which gives him a ghostly appearance. I am too far to get a good look at the facial details, but he seems to be descent looking, although oddly colored, guy. Nothing monstrous, which was what I was expecting, is really sticking out at me.
“Oh, look who’s back already?” He speaks in an echoey husky voice, like several people are all speaking in unison. Creepy.
“Come back to try dying once again? I won’t disappoint this time.” The youkai laughs, stepping closer to Sesshomaru, who doesn’t even flinch.
“It is you that will not survive this day.” Sesshomaru draws Bakusaiga and points it towards Zenaku head, promising blood.
