Chapter Twelve: Alpha
The first sound of the morning was metal clashing on metal. Sitting up with a groan, I looked around with bleary eyes until I saw two out of focus figures fighting. “Ugh, its way too early for any of this,” I growled out, rubbing my eyes before I got to my feet.
“They’ve been at it since before the sun rose,” Kagome informed, seeming just as annoyed.
“Fuck, I’m guessing talking wasn’t even an option,” I grumbled, grabbing my sword and strapping it to my waist.
“Of course not. Not that I didn’t try,” the teen sighed, a fair bit of worry on her pale face.
Pursing my lips, I strode toward the pair; ignoring protests from Sango. Inuyasha knew he was beaten, he was just too stubborn to admit it. I wasn’t about to let his pride kill him. Glancing behind me, I smiled to see Kagome following close behind; determination on her features. Unsheathing my weapon, I sprinted toward the pair. Without prompting, the reincarnated priestess called out the word of subjugation. “Sit!” Grunting, Inuyasha slammed into the dirt as I moved to intercept Sesshomaru’s blade with my own.
No matter how much I braced, the blow still sent me to my knees; the sound of our blades screaming echoing in my ears. Raising my green eyes to meet his amber ones, I felt a bit gratified to see surprise shining in the normally emotionless orbs. “That is enough! Both of you!” I gritted out, feeling some relief when the inu-youkai backed off with his weapon. Getting to my feet, I turned to face a glowering hanyou.
“You have no right to...,” he began, only to be cut off by Kagome calling out ‘sit’.
“When you seem intent on getting yourself killed, I do. We have all seen how tough you are but you’re outmatched,” I pointed out, wincing as his ears flattened.
“Sesshomaru will only be with us in a temporary sense. You’ll always be our alpha. So, surely you can withstand conceding this one time,” I continued, attempting to appeal to his logical side.
Lifting his eyes, he glared at me before turning his head and letting out a dismissive sound. Taking that as agreement, I sheathed my weapon and went back to the camp. As soon as I was close enough, I was sitting down and rubbing my sore arms. If he had hit any harder, he could have broken them with his sheer power. Already I could feel my muscles cramping and it was all I could do not to let my discomfort show on my face. I would be lucky if I could use my sword at all for the next few days.
After a few moments, Kagome and Inuyasha joined the rest of us; the young woman searching in her bag for something. In the background, Rin and Shippo colored together, giggling over some story they were making. It was as if the two children had no clue about what had just happened. Shaking my head at their innocence I returned my attention to the teen rooting through her pack. After a bit, she came up with a bottle; walking over and handing it to me. Looking down, I was grateful to see it was a muscle relaxant creme.
Applying some to my abused limbs, I let out a sigh as it took immediate effect. That was when I noticed Sesshomaru was now nowhere to be seen. Getting to my feet, I looked around to see a disheartened Jaken, a relaxing Ah-Un and a jolly Rin but no sign of the Lord. “The bastard’ll be back. He probably figured it would be more efficient to get the shards himself while we continue toward Naraku,” Inuyasha grumbled, glowering at a grinning Kouga.
“Had to have a woman save you, eh Dog Breath?” the Wolf Prince prodded with a smirk. Immediately bristling, the part demon lunged at the Eastern Lord.
Groaning, I shook my head and simply started to pack. This wasn’t a real fight anyway. More of a way for our former leader to blow off steam. Becoming all business once he saw what was going on, Shippo transformed to his balloon form. Clambering onto him along with Kagome, I closed my eyes as we rose into the air. “Ugh, I hope I can get over this some day,” I whimpered, forcing my eyes open when we appeared to level out.
“I know but that fear is quite understandable. Especially given how you came to be here,” the young femme next to me assured, making me smile slightly.
“I can only imagine how you felt, seeing someone falling from the sky like that. I’m just happy you all accepted me as well as you have,” I responded with a small grin. It all seemed so long ago now despite not that much time passing.
“Not to mention you being from another world entirely. A world where ours lives is a show,” she whispered, sounding a bit troubled by the information. Not that I could blame her. If I found out my entire reality was some, badly written fanfic, I would feel pretty off center too.
Watching the landscape below me, I wondered just how long it would take us to reach Naraku. If we could even win with our small amount of shards. It would be a hard fight, even with the people we had. It would be extremely relevant that my healing powers be up to snuff. I would have to make sure to practice them as much as I could before the fight. That way, I would be of use if I couldn’t continue the battle.
I was so wrapped up in these thoughts that I nearly didn’t notice Sesshomaru was coming until he was almost on top of us. Startling slightly, I watched as he tossed a small pouch to the modern day miko. Blinking, she opened it to see corrupted shards. Pouring them into her hand, she closed her eyes while her holy energy purified them. Soon they were glowing a much healthier pink and she was placing them in the jar around her neck. Once that was done, she was closing her eyes once more; seemingly sensing if there were any more that she had missed. When she opened them again, she seemed both relieved and worried. “The only ones left are with Naraku,” she announced, the finality of her words making me shudder.
Soon it would all be coming to an end. Soon I would see for myself just how right the anime had been. I would be engaged in a battle no human could logically live through. Clenching my fists, I felt myself fill with a determination to get all of us through this. “How far away is he?” I finally asked, dreading the answer.
“Almost a week’s travel,” came a response that made my skin prickle. Just seven days. So little time and most of it would be spent in the air. On top of it, Sesshomaru was even less likely to stop to help than Inuyahsa had been.
If it came down to it, would I have the courage to ask for what I needed? Shaking myself, I squared my shoulders and gathered what determination I had within me. I would have to find the courage. Lives could depend on it. Pursing my lips, I forced myself to scan the landscape below for any signs of villages that needed help. Soon, my sharp eyes caught a plume of smoke and I was motioning to Sango and Miroku. The pair nodded before looking at something to the right of us. Having a good idea of what it was, I turned my head to see Sesshomaru simply staring at me with no expression on his face. Knowing I would have to explain, I took a deep breath to steady myself before speaking. “My Lord Sesshomaru, I have a few powers I need to practice in order for them to become stronger. One of them happens to be the power to heal,” I explained, some part of me doubting the wisdom of telling a former enemy all of this.
To my surprise, he gave a single nod; as if granting me silent permission. Unable to help smiling in response, I directed Shippo toward the stricken village. As we got closer, it became obvious they had suffered an attack by bandits, not youkai. Several villages were burned, many women were in a shocked, almost zombie-like states and several of the men were either tied up or killed. What made it worse were the children. Grimacing once we got a good look, we made a decision to land further away to keep Rin from seeing it too closely.
While she had no doubt seen more than a few blood baths in her day, most people in the group wanted to shield her and Shippo as much as they could. Setting down in a field full of flowers, I slid off the transformed kitsune while the young girl riding Ah-Un ran into the blooms. In a way, I envied her for her carefree nature. Leaving her in the care of Jaken, me and the others began to head toward the village. With the exception of the full blooded youkai and Inuyasha. The last we wanted was to scare these people more than they already had been.
Hours later and the line seemed never ending. Yet we kept working. Kagome, Sango and Miroku gathered herbs as I used my powers to heal what I could. I had reached exhaustion soon after we had started but I forced myself to continue, unable to turn away a single, pleading face. Especially when so many of them were women and children. So, I found myself working well into the night. It was only when the final victim passed by that I finally allowed myself to collapse.

“Stupid girl. If she was getting tired she shoulda told us,” grumbled a gruff, male voice from somewhere above me, piercing the fog of sleep like a flashlight.
“Don’t call her that! Her actions saved countless people,” protested a female voice as I rolled over and opened my eyes. Just beyond the campfire were the blurred figures of my companions and they appeared to be bickering over me.
“While her heart was in the right spot, I have to agree with Inuyasha. She could have killed herself by doing something like that,” sighed another male voice, seeming to be trying to defuse the situation a bit.
Groaning, I sat up with a wince; my head throbbing like I had been hit by something. “Hey, can I be included in this conversation?” I quipped, smirking slightly when the gathered trio jumped guiltily.
“Told you all she’d be fine. Anyone who can stand up to Sesshomaru has to be tough,” came a declaration from behind me, bringing my attention to Kouga. An odd respect shone in the Wolf Prince’s eyes as he nodded in my direction to acknowledge me.
“Yeah, other than feeling like I got run over by a truck, I’m great,” I grumbled, chuckling at his confused glance.
Then I was turning to face my original pack, the atmosphere becoming serious once more. “You really scared us Jade,” Kagome whispered after a few moments, meeting my gaze steadily with her worried eyes.
“We all know you feel a need to improve your powers as well as help people but you can’t help anyone if you’re dead,” Miroku added as Sango and Inuyasha nodded in agreement.
Sighing, I had to admit they were right. I knew I should have stopped a long time ago but I kept going. Even now, I felt weak and exhausted, barely able to lift myself into a sitting position. “Jade?” came a voice to my left, drawing my attention to a shy looking Rin. Immediately, she ducked her head and began fiddling with the hem of her dress; shifting from side to side nervously.
“Rin was also scared when you did not wake,” she managed, finally looking up with tears rimming her wide, brown eyes.
Pulling her into a hug, I made reassuring noises as she wrapped her arms around me. “I’m sorry, to everyone. I should be a lot more aware of my own body's limits. I didn’t mean to worry anyone or push myself nearly this hard,” I murmured quietly while the others joined me by the fire. Soon, normal conversation resumed and Rin pulled away to play with Shippo. This seemed to be a signal to the others as conversation began around me. I, on the other hand, was caught in some serious introspection.
I had come very close to dying. Scarily close and I needed a moment to myself to come to terms with this fact. Getting to my feet slowly, I swayed unsteadily while my exhausted muscles struggled to hold me. “Hey, Inuyasha? Do you smell a hot spring anywhere nearby?” I asked, hoping that if there was one that it would be close. She didn’t think she could get far in her condition.
“Yeah, there’s one a little ways west of here. Want me to show ya?” he offered, only to have me shake my head in response.
“No, I would rather go alone if at all possible. I need some time to think,” I admitted, earning worried looks from my original companions as well as Rin.
“Take Ah-Un. He will keep you safe and lead you there,” she offered, gesturing to the two headed dragon.
“You silly girl! Lord Sesshomaru would never allow one like her to utilize his steed,” Jaken screeched, flailing his staff as I rolled my eyes and made my way over to the placid mount.
Offering my hand to sniff, I smiled when he pressed his head into me for a pet instead. “I’ll let you make the decision, big guy. Would you like to come with me to the hot spring?” I asked, ignoring the toad’s protests from behind me. After all, Ah-Un was likely more intelligent than the rude imp gave him credit for. To prove me right, he gave my hand a nudge before kneeling to allow me onto his back.
“Thanks Ah-Un,” I praised giving him a scratch behind the ears on both heads before getting on.
Without another glance toward the now ranting retainer, we went off into the thick forest. Thankfully, the spring I wanted was mere feet away and we got there in no time. Getting off the docile beast, I undressed before slipping into the warm, relaxing waters. All at once, my muscles relaxed; drawing a relieved sigh from my lips. Yet that didn’t wipe away the nagging worries in my head. I, much like Kagome, had to learn to say no, no matter how much it hurt to do so. I would be no use to anyone if I killed myself, after all. “This one thinks you are foolish,” grumbled from the trees nearby, nearly making her jump out of her skin.
Ducking into the murky water, my eyes scanned the treeline until I caught a glint of white behind a trunk. While grateful he had enough honor to not peek at me while bathing, I was still not happy he was there at all. “Why did you follow me?” I snarled out, moving to the far back of the spring where I would be more out of sight. That was when I realized what had come out of my mouth and terror replaced indignation.
“Rin has taken a liking to you. You will also be very useful for the upcoming fight,” came a concise response that raised even more questions.
“Any of the others could have come. Besides, I know how you feel about my species,” I retorted quietly, more musing to myself than really expecting a response.
“The half breed and his mate are occupied. As are the monk and slayer,” came from the trees, his words making me blush heatedly.
It didn’t take a genius to figure out what the two pairs were up to. Especially with being so close to the decisive battle. Still, that didn’t stop me from feeling more alone than before. Sighing, I leaned against the warm rocks to stare at the stars through the trees. “I know what I did was stupid but... How can I say no to anyone genuinely in need? How do I look at a child Rin or Shippo’s age and turn them away because I’m too tired,” I murmured into the night, both in response to his earlier statement and a question to myself. There was no response but I took some comfort in his presence.

As the pair walked into a clearing, Kagome nibbled her lower lip nervously. After years of hardship, of self doubt and growth, she was about to take a huge step forward. If she went through with this, their relationship would never be the same. Therefore, she had to know the answer to a very important question. “I-Inuyasha... Before we do this, I need to know if... if you just see me as Kikyo. If you’re just using me as a way to be with her,” she stammered out, avoiding his gaze as she shifted from foot to foot. That was when he took her hands in both of his.
“Kagome, look at me,” came a gruff command, drawing her brown orbs to his amber ones.
Within those golden islands, she saw a deep emotion that took her breath away and filled her with hope. “I love you for you. You are not and never have been a replacement for Kikyo. I’m just sorry it took as long as it did for me to realize it,” rumbled his soft midtone before his lips descended on her own. They were soft and gentle, his tongue lapping over her mouth briefly to beg for entrance. A request she gladly granted.
Moaning into his mouth while her arms wrapped around him, the pair laid down on the grass; Inuyasha straddling on top of her. With a sight of her name, he kissed her neck while she fumbled with the ties of his kimono. Soon, the inexperienced pair were naked, their limbs intertwined as their hands explored one another. All embarrassment or awkwardness faded for the years of built up tension. The years of their affections pulling them towards eachother and leading to this moment. Intertwining, the two lovers began an ancient dance under the moon, joining their fates together permanently.

Deeper in the forest, another couple simply sat together and watched the stars. Despite the fact their bodies were calling to them to finally join, they had decided to do so on their own terms. They would not allow this fight with Naraku to rush them into the next step. Especially given the fact that this was Sango’s first relationship, period. Until she was really ready, Miroku would content himself with just being by her side. “Sango, I love you,” he declared, wanting to say it while he still could. Neither of them could say what would happen during the battle.
Nibbling her lower lip, Sango smiled while a blush colored her cheeks. Entwining her fingers with his, she leaned into the monk as her eyes flicked to the sky. Since she had met him, she had never thought she would consider marriage. Or even love. Especially not with someone like Miroku. Yet, the longer she had been around him, the more she had seen of his real personality, The personality he attempted to bury with his womanizing.
Even now, his cursed hand was caressing her bottom but she couldn’t bring herself to be offended. In fact, at this moment, she welcomed it. “I love you too,” she whispered, looking into his purple eyes with a blush on her cheeks. Smiling warmly, the holy man bent to take her lips; his mouth moving over hers needily. Then he was breaking the kiss to nestle closer, eyes moving back to the splendor that stretched above.
