Prompt Summary: Bankotsu puts his plan in motion, but it doesn't go as he was hoping.
A few hours later, once Bankotsu was certain the saloon girl had had enough time to get Kumo drunk and passed out in his room, he instructed Jakotsu to wait in his room before making his way over toward the balcony once more. Unlocking the door once more, the lock probably having seen more use that day then it was accustomed to, he stepped out into the cool night air without making a single sound.
As Jakotsu watched him, noticing the way the street lanterns caused his sun kissed skin to glow orange in the light, he stepped out onto the balcony himself just in time to watch him effortlessly jump from his to the room next door's balcony. After a moment, deciding it would not be a good idea to draw attention to himself by staying out there, Jakotsu made his way back inside to wait for him in his room. So sure it would only take a few minutes, he didn't even bother to sit down while he waited.
The estimated minutes soon proved to be an exaggeration as only a few moments later, Jakotsu was startled by the loud shot that rang out from the room next door. As he tried to ignore the way his pounding heart echoed in his ears, what he had actually heard caught up to his mind. It wasn't a single shot, it had been two fired almost at the exact same moment. Worried about his new friend, Jakotsu rushed back out onto the balcony, about to jump over to the one next door, before realizing the futility of doing so.
He stood absolutely no chance of clearing even the small distance there was in the dress he was wearing. Jakotsu would no doubt come up short and be pulled quickly to the ground under the weight of his dress. Deciding there was a better way, he made his way back into the room and quickly made his way to the front door. As he was opening it, he could already hear many sets of boots moving around in the hallway and carefully opened it just enough he could see out.
A moment later, Bankotsu was led away in cuffs by the sheriff; a few deputies following after them down the stairs. Before he could even try to come up with a plan, Jakotsu noticed Katherine hiding in the shadows in the hallway at the same time that she noticed his presence. As her eyes grew large, she pushed him back into Bankotsu's room before closing the door behind them. “I'm so sorry, Jakotsu. I had to.
“Mr. Kumo knew somethin' was wrong with his drink not being watered down. He's always suspicious and wouldn't believe that he was just getting the good stuff because he was my favorite customer. He threatened to kill me if I didn't tell him what was going on,” Katherine insisted before Jakotsu could even suspect she had anything to do with what had just happened.
Before he could say anything, she continued hysterically, “So I told him that some strange man threatened to kill me if I didn't, but that I had no idea why. And he don't know about you. He don't know you were the one that asked me to do it.”
“Alright, Katherine, it's alright,” Jakotsu assured her as he tried to get the girl to calm down. There was no sense in them being overheard because she couldn't' get control over herself. “You should go back to work. So far you've been lucky, but there's no reason to chance Kumo thinking you had something to do with it again. He's probably looking for you already.”
“No he ain't,” Katherine insisted as she pulled back from Jakotsu shaking her head. “He's dead.”
…
Across town, in a small three cell jail house, Bankotsu was thrown into the first cell causing him to gag at the sudden stench. Between the old, rotting food and the human waste that had been piled up in the far corner, neither of which seemed to have been cleaned out for a long time, it was almost enough to make the saddle hardened man lose his dinner. Fortunately, his mind was distracted from the smell for a few moments as he heard the sheriff speaking to him.
“Don't bother with gettin' comfy. You're set to hang at dawn.” Turning away from his only prisoner at the moment, the sheriff informed his deputies, “We gotta get back and get that mess cleaned up. You stay here and watch him.” After the deputy he was referring to nodded his head in understanding, the sheriff and the other deputies headed back out toward the saloon they had been in just minutes before. The deputy suddenly laughing, turned Bankotsu's attention to him.
“I can't wait for morning. It's been far too long since I got to see me a hangin',” he informed Bankotsu before making his way toward the other side of the room and hanging up both his own and his prisoner's gun belts on the hooks. Making his way back to the desk placed not far from Bankotsu's cell, he plopped his still booted feet on top of the desk and placed his hat over his eyes to block out the light. Just because he had to watch the prisoner didn't mean he couldn't get some shut eye while waiting.
