The Heir and the Spare
The Continent of Japan is in danger; humans and demons are engaged in a deadly war. To avoid calamity Princess Kagome, a human, finds herself betrothed to the heir of the demon-dominated Western Lands, Prince Sesshomaru. Too bad she finds herself falling for her future-husband's younger brother, Inuyasha.

I just want to say that, before I start the chapter, that it has been over a year since I updated and I am super sorry! I reread the entire story to remind myself of what the heck happened and found myself falling in love with the plot all over again. I'm getting back in to the grove of writing, with my wedding less than two weeks ago it is literally my outlet. And now, without further ado, let us begin!
.xx.
Izayoi had been very clear with her instructions: Inuyasha and Kagome's alliance would be made, but there mustn't be any hints given to any party of the family—or the denizens. That meant that Sesshomaru couldn't know, Inutaisho couldn't know—nobody could know. Izayoi's plans would be in full force by the summer solstice and, to Inuyasha's knowledge, that was a fortnight away. How his mother was going to pull it off was beyond him, but if that meant that he would be graced with the presence of Kagome for eternity and not his cowardly blasted brother, then so be it.
Inuyasha donned his black training hakama and matched head-to-head with his elder brother in the courtyard. It was close to sundown and Sesshomaru requested that he spar with Inuyasha for a little bit before they retired to their rooms for sleep. Kagome, after their interlude in the library, decided to stay there for a wink longer. Inuyasha knew it was in an effort to stay away from Sesshomaru for just a bit more.
"My, my, little brother." Sesshomaru snickered as Inuyasha was almost successful in dropping him to the ground. "You've gained some strength. Quite impressive," Sesshomaru dodged Inuyasha lunging at him, "for a few nights." He added as an afterthought.
If only you knew, brother, where the strength stems from. Though Inuyasha knew Sesshomaru wasn't totally at fault, just the thought of Kagome—his woman—being mated to Sesshomaru for eternity was boiling his demon blood—and due to his halfblooded nature, the rage of his Demon blood was especially more dangerous than that of his full-blooded half-brother. Sesshomaru knew how to control his beast. Inuyasha did not.
Despite it being just a few days that he met the beautiful angel that hailed from the North, Inuyasha knew she was the could never be anybody else that could compare to the woman who effortlessly claimed his heart.
"I had to—" Inuyasha grunted as he sprung away from his charging brother, "strengthen myself to beat your ass, Fluffy. I already have you in the courage department."
Sesshomaru growled and charged even faster towards Inuyasha. Smirking, the younger half-demon lunged out of the way and Sesshomaru essentially punched air. "Do not insinuate that I am a coward, little brother."
"Ah, but you are." Effortlessly, once again, Inuyasha dodged his brother's advances. Sesshomaru was beginning to let rage get a hold of his calm state of mind and it was clouding his judgement. Sesshomaru was unable to determine Inuyasha's movement and was beginning to fail in their spar. "You fled at the first sign of commitment, Sesshomaru." Inuyasha said his name in a taunting fashion. "And while you were out helping our dogs on the battlefield which, may I point out, was useless as casualties remained the same on both sides of the war, I was the one here gallivanting with your—" it pained Inuyasha to title Kagome as Sesshomaru's woman, but as per his mother's instruction he was simply doing what was best for the situation, "bride-to-be."
Sesshomaru grunted and barely missed Inuyasha's high kick. "That was prior to me knowing that she is quite the beauty."
Inuyasha had to exercise breathing techniques to stop his demon from pounding the innards out from Sesshomaru. "Mother and Father did not teach you to be shallow, big brother."
"Indeed they did not."
The brothers stopped sparring and turned to see an annoyed Izayoi, a bemused Inutaisho, and a shy (and quite adorable, in Inuyasha's opinion) Kagome. Sesshomaru was panting heavily, a trickle of sweat beaded down from his left temple, but Inuyasha was all but bouncing around with energy. He was hardly winded and was quite surprised that Sesshomaru was already exhausted. Normally his elder brother could keep up for a few hours, if not more.
Izayoi took a step towards her sons. It was her that spoke up when Inuyasha shot shallow jab at Sesshomaru. "Sesshomaru, your father and I would like to have a long word with you. Inuyasha, freshen up and please prepare a carriage—you will be escorting Princess Kagome to our Western Chalet where she will learn how our people live a normal life, away from the warring states and royalty."
Inuyasha tried very hard to not look blissfully excited. "Yes, mother. When do you expect our return?"
"Sundown, tomorrow."
Inutaisho blanched and Sesshomaru spluttered—a sight that Inuyasha would give up his title to see again. "Sundown?! They are to spend the night… together?!"
"Calm yourself, Sesshomaru." Izayoi's voice was stern. "They will merely be visiting our Western Chalet with the accompaniment of Sango, Kagome's lady-in-waiting, and Miroku, our advisor. You could have had the privilege of accompanying them but you decided to help our warriors instead of greeting your bride-to-be upon her arrival. Consider it your… punishment, one of many."
Sesshomaru looked to his father who glared at him with the same anger that Izayoi portrayed. Needless to say, it was unfair but Sesshomaru had learned quite early on that his step-mother did not play favourites; she loved him as if he was her own but also punished as much as she loved. Keeping up his regular calm and cool disposition, Sesshomaru bowed to his parents. "Whatever you deem best."
Kagome watched the interaction between the family and couldn't help but notice the raw differences between Inuyasha and Sesshomaru; the former, who claimed her heart, was easy going, fun loving, and an all-round joker. The latter, on the other hand, was stern, cold, and seemed like a character that would play by the rules. Perhaps Sesshomaru portrayed traits that an heir should portray, and Inuyasha was probably the very definition of spare.
In a very stereotypical fashion, yes. Kagome mused. For a brief moment she and Inuyasha caught eyes and Kagome could not help the flutter in her stomach, and the tingle that ran up her spine. It was incredible the things he made her feel, and such a short amount of time too. Before their senses ran wild, Inuyasha broke his connection with Kagome and took a step back.
"LECHER! PREPARE. MY. CARRIAGE!"
Kagome squeaked and covered her mouth and Izayoi turned her lethal glare to Inuyasha. "His name is Miroku. Refer to him as such."
"But he's such a—"
"Miroku." Izayoi did not leave room for argument. Inuyasha snorted and rolled his eyes.
"Father, aren't you going to say anything about this?"
Inutaisho shrugged. "Whatever your mother has to say is what it is, boy. She's come this far in raising you both, I'm sure she knows what she's going."
Though Kagome did not have hypersensitive hearing, she could've sworn she heard Inuyasha mutter a soft keh before stomping off to find their advisor, Miroku—a person that Kagome had yet to meet.

Kagome could hardly believe the liberal attitude that Izayoi had displayed. Her and Inuyasha… in the Western Chalet… without Sesshomaru around? It was inconceivable! Kagome was still reeling from the initial conversation she had with Izayoi in the library not long after Inuyasha left…
"Kagome, dear?"
Kagome looked up from the book she was reading and stood up in a haste to greet the Queen of the West. With as much finesse as she could muster, she gently placed the book down and bowed to show respect for her would-be mother-in-law… through her, apparent, union with Inuyasha in the stead of Sesshomaru.
"Hello, your highness."
"Nonsense, I've told you to call me mother." The warmth not only radiated from her eyes, but also from her aura. Izayoi was genuinely a caring and loving person… and Kagome felt lucky to be in her presence. Quickly, she rephrased her greeting:
"Hello…" there was a short pause. "Mother." The word felt foreign. It would, for a while.
"I believe my younger son has already met with you?"
Kagome nodded dumbly.
"Are you in agreement with the change in union?"
Kagome nodded again, as mute as ever. She did not know what to expect, and decided not to hold any expectations in the matter. She came to the West completely against her will, but she was choosing to stay willingly. However that depended on who her union was made with.
Her heart decided on Inuyasha.
"In order to solidify this union, I have asked for a fortnight before the summer solstice. For the next night, you and Inuyasha will spend it at the Western Chalet—however all rules of royalty that are commonplace shall remain." Izayoi meant no intimacy between them. Kagome could not argue with her, it would be blasphemous to even entertain thought of… of… being with Inuyasha.
Simply kissing him was one thing.
Izayoi smiling warmly. "Prepare yourself; I will let the other men know of my decision."
Kagome adored that Izayoi feared no one and no thing. Bowing once more to take her leave, Kagome hurried out of the library, her mind reeling a mile a minute.
"Ready to go?"
Kagome broke out of her reverie when she heard Sango's voice cut through the air. Glancing over her shoulder, Kagome saw her friend carrying a small bag that contained both her and Kagome's personal belongings—the rest of their stuff would be hauled by the butler demons. "Ready."
Kagome and Sango fell in step with one another.
"You should be marrying Sesshomaru," Sango reminded and Kagome's back stiffened. Sango glanced at Kagome for a brief moment before looking ahead once more.
"But, between you and I… I think Inuyasha is the better choice."
Without missing a beat, both girls fell into soft laughter.

Two carriages were drawn; one for Sango and Miroku as well as a few warrior demons that would prove to serve as bodyguards, and one for Inuyasha and Kagome. The main inhabitants of the castle came to see off Kagome and Inuyasha: Inutaisho, Izayoi, and scowling Sesshomaru. He made it evident that he was not in agreement with his mother's decision.
Inuyasha grinned as wide as his jaw and mouth would allow him; rubbing it in his brother's face was his favourite game.
"Enjoy the chalet, Kagome!" Izayoi called as the carriages departed. Kagome waved farewell one final time before situating herself comfortably inside of the carriage—the sizzle in the air was evident and Kagome was acutely aware of how Inuyasha situated himself from across from her to beside her.
Not that Kagome was complaining.
"Why so quiet, highness?"
His drawl awakened her senses. Kagome was acutely aware of how her heart began pounding; it was very surreal. Almost unnatural. It was amazing how Kagome was very aware of everything that was Prince Inuyasha: his smell, the small twitches of his muscle, the way his sinew rippled when he lunged from treetop to treetop- it was frightening. But, at the same time, Kagome found it completely exhilarating.
"Are you looking forward to our night away?" His chest rumbled as he spoke, the low baritone almost echoing off of the carriage walls. Kagome gulped and nodded; she tended to become quite mute when she was speaking to either Inuyasha or Izayoi. It unnerved her. In the North, she was considered quite the fiery Princess, but in the West? She was as soft as a lamb.
Or perhaps a lamb demon, if I wished to be technical. Kagome mused in good humour.
"I haven't given my mother enough credit," Inuyasha leaned back comfortable, still at a close proximity of Kagome. His body heat seeped in to Kagome's pores. The fact that they were the heirs of their thrones was eluded; perhaps this is how a normal woman feels? Kagome was not unaware of how Inuyasha was attuned to her senses. In his mind, heart, and soul she was already his. It was a matter of officiating it physically, and that could only be completed after his mother did what she had to do.
"Why do you say that?"
Inuyasha turned his gaze to look outside. The passing scenery was beautiful; his lands never ceased to amaze him... the war had yet to affect the lands that they were passing through, and Inuyasha was praying that with the union of Kagome to him, the war would end entirely. But, on the other hand, Kagome's father could lose his mind altogether and wage another war for marrying Kagome to the spare and not the heir. Oh, the conundrum that would be.
"She chose family over duty."
That piqued Kagome's interest. "Pardon me?"
Inuyasha smiled down at her, his eyes shining with pure admiration… Admiration for her.
"She chose me over what her role of duty—it's either Sesshomaru or myself, and mother is to ensure that you get what you want."
Kagome, with a cheeky smile, asked: "And what is it that I want?"
"I would hope me, but if you change your mind I will not—" Although Inuyasha was speaking with utmost sincerity, he was very happy that Kagome silenced him with a kiss. It solidified what he already knew: she was his.
Not Sesshomaru's.
His.
