Kagome hurried back to her room shutting the door firmly behind her. She leaned back against the sturdy wood. Her heart was racing so quickly she thought it might burst free from her chest. Pressing a small hand there she willed it to be still. “What am I thinking?” She asked herself breathlessly, “what’s wrong with me?”.But the answer is seemed would continue to elude her. For long hours later as she lay comfortably tucked her many layers of bright silk blankets, sleep refused to grant her peace. As Kagome lay awake staring at the ceiling she wondered what was occurring in the chamber just beyond the hallway.
Sesshoumaru was in no better state than his current human Ward. For her scent continued to linger on his clothing and in his chamber. It wafted through the room like some sweet forbidden perfume that the demon Lord longed to touch, to chase, to possess… but was unable to do so.
The woman was as maddening as she was beautiful. And Sesshoumaru wondered if he might get through this in one piece. Already he had noticed changes within himself. Nothing of a grand scale or bold declaration, nothing that a common passerby might notice. However the demon Lord of the West was aware of minute changes that occurred on a nearly daily basis. The first and most troubling perhaps, the fact that as the days continue to progress the human woman became more appealing to him. Second, was the fact that her arguments were no longer an irritation to him but rather an amusement.
As he lay in his large bed, his body reminded him how difficult the situation was becoming. He very nearly called for a courtesan, but swiftly decided against it. The demoness would not have the same scent, the same taste and certainly not the same fragile softness of the priestess.
Dawn seemed to come far too early to the weary fortress residents. The pinkish rays that crept through windows were met with a muffled groan and bared fangs respectively.
Kagome was poking listlessly at her breakfast. Enoa watched her silently for some time before she spoke in a casual manner.
“You seem restless, has something happened?”
The human nearly choked on the tiny bite of food she’d just swallowed, cheeks flaming in apple hues. “Eh?! No!”
Enoa chuckled good naturedly, “Little liar.”
Kagome smacked her chopsticks to the table, “How dare you call me a liar?” she demanded.
Enoa merely pushed the lacquered sticks back to her and smiled, “His scent was quite strong on you this morning. You have no need to tell me. I merely wondered if I could help you.”
Kagome sighed, shoulder slumping, “I’m sorry Enoa” she mumbled to her food, “I just feel so confused. I’m trying to sort things out in my mind but it’s not really working. I don’t even really know what my problem is.”
The demoness nodded kindly, “Let’s start with the main issue then shall we?” she asked.
Kagome blinked tired eyes at her. “Huh?
“If you don’t know the problem, we will sort through the symptoms until we discover it. If you prefer I can fetch the slayer. I just thought that in light of the nature of your arrangement with Sesshoumaru, you might wish to speak to me.”
Kagome nodded.
“How do you feel right now?”
Kagome considered that, “Confused and angry.”
Enoa blinked, “Sesshoumaru has angered you?”
“No. I’ve angered myself.”
“How so?”
Kagome turned pink again, “I have been following Inuyasha around for all this time. I was so certain that my heart was only his. I am certain!”
“But you are starting to feel something here too aren’t you?”
“Yes. And it’s so stupid.” The scent of tears reached the keen nose of the demoness.
“Stupid how?”
“Inuyasha loves Kikyo. Sesshoumaru, well he pretty much loves himself. Neither really want or need me other than to help them with problems. Finding jewel shards or dealing with heat…I know that…. But…”
Enoa’s heart ached for the confused girl before her, she rose and wrapped her arms around the human priestess. Her silks warm and softly scented, comforting. “You shouldn’t hide such thoughts. They will only hurt all the more.” She pulled back to cup the damp cheeks of her friend, “I am always here to hear you out. And I know what your problem is.”
“What is that?”
Enoa smiled gently, “You are falling for Sesshoumaru.”
Kagome pondered Enoa’s words throughout the remainder of the day. She had spent some time with Miroku, Sango and Shippo. Koga and Inuyasha had left that morning to investigate the rumor of a shard three days east. Kagome was upset over this as his time of weakness was very nearly upon him.
“Kagome, “Miroku said, “You need to trust Koga. He knows that secret, and despite that I seriously doubt he would ever use that to his advantage.”
“Miroku’s right, “Sango chimed in, looking up from Kirara who was perched on her lap, “They really just mouth off to each other but they have defended each other in battle. It’s a pack mentality, grudging but there.”
Kagome found herself wandering the halls aimlessly until her feet stopped. Looking up she found herself before the tall doors leading to the lord’s office. She was about to turn and leave when his voice reached her.
“Enter Kagome.”
She was torn between wanting to ignore the summons and leave and banging her head against his door in hopes that the noise might irritate him.
Instead, she reached out and slowly pushed the door open.
Sesshoumaru looked up, seeing the object of his thoughts framed with the doorway. Today she was gowned in a vivid violet blue with silver stars cleverly stitched here and there. Her lustrous black hair was piled and high and held tightly with ornate sticks. It made his head hurt just to look at it.
“Are you going to gape at me from the hall all day?”, he asked, but there was no ice in his tone.
Kagome blinked, “Perhaps” she allowed and his golden eyes widened slightly at the hint of playfulness in her voice. Kagome stepped inside the office, shutting the doors behind her.
She met his eyes and held them for a moment before her bravery deserted her.
Sesshoumaru sat back in his seat, “Was there something you wanted Kagome?”
She shook her head, the tiny silver bells of her hair sticks chiming softly. “I was just walking… I kind of ended up here.”
Without being asked, she walked forward, sinking into the raised bed of cushions that served to seat his guests. “Did you know Inuyasha left?”
He nodded, “With that bratling wolf. Are you worried?”
She nodded. Her eyes moving past him to the window, “It’s almost the new moon.”
“They will return before then.” He assured her, picking up his brush once more. She was quiet for a moment, listening to the wet slide of the brush against paper.
Once more without asking she reached over and plucked up half of the stack of correspondence.
“Kagome. What are you doing?”
She shrugged, “Nothing else to do, thought I would help. If you’d rather I not…”
Slowly, he pushed the well of ink to center it between them.
Kagome worked silently for nearly an hour, before raising her head. “The cats are declaring war on you.” She said then.
“Tell them gladly accepted.”
She blinked, brush hovering over paper. “What?”
He didn’t pause in his work, “Tell them I agree that we are at war”
She set the brush down, “You won’t try and negotiate peace?”
He snorted softly, “Hell no.” he said replied baldly.
Kagome tried to hold it in, she did. But hearing him sounding so much like Inuyasha she couldn’t help it.
She did the unthinkable before him.
She snickered.
Sesshoumaru stopped writing and stared at her. She clapped her hand over her mouth trying to stifle the sounds. She doubted he would appreciate being laughed at.
The longer he stared the more she seemed incapable of control.
He leaned forward in his seat, reaching through the space between them. Catching her wrist in clawed grip. When he pulled the hand free, the laughter bubbled up brightly. Odd that such a sound would be so pleasing to him.
“Just what is so funny?” he asked then.
She shook her head, dabbed her eyes, “You” she panted.
“Me?” he asked taken aback, “You find this Sesshoumaru funny?”
She shook her head, “I’m sorry. I didn’t expect you to say it like that.” She reached up and poked at her hair sticks.
He released her, leaning back in his seat once more.
“Come here Kagome.” He commanded softly and she sobered instantly at the look in his eye.
“Eh?”
He crooked his finger at her.
She shook her head.
“Afraid?”
Her spine stiffened to the point of cracking and he smirked.
She rose and came round the desk to stand beside him. They were nearly of a height this way. She stood stiffly before him and Sesshoumaru reached out and grasped the bright hair sticks. With a gentle tug, her hair cascaded down around her shoulders.
Kagome watched with wide eyes as he lifted a lock of the dark hair to his nose and sniffed. “You smell of cherry blossoms.”
She flushed at his words, that traitorous heart of hers taking off at a full gallop. She hoped he couldn’t hear but that hope was dashed as his golden eyes lowered to the center of her chest as though listening to the cadence there and then slowly lifting back to her own.
“Sesshoumaru?” she asked softly.
His clawed hand lifted to slide through her tresses, “This Sesshoumaru prefers you this way.”
She blinked feeling as though all the oxygen in the room had suddenly been stolen when his claws traced over the nape of her neck and then he was pulling her forward.
His lips hovered a breath above hers, his eyes locked on hers.
Kagome felt that fluttering feeling in her stomach and her lashes fluttered in response. Her eyes closed. And then his mouth was there. Hot and hard against her own, no teasing leading kiss.
It was hungry, marauding and Kagome was powerless against it. She couldn’t stop the small mewl that escaped her mouth as his tongue slipped past her lips and teeth, to tangle and stroke against her own.
Her small hands lifted and fisted in the silk over his chest as her legs gave out.
Sesshoumaru merely swept her onto his lap, tilting her back in the crook of his arm as he continued to plunder the sweetness of her mouth. Red raged behind his eyes and he fought it back, unable to break from her.
His hand slid from her cheek, to press against the furious tattoo of her pulse before sliding to her hip. His clawed fingers tightened on the curve there and Kagome broke free for air. Her panting a harsh rasp in the quiet around them. Sesshoumaru’s mouth descended to her throat then, nipping over the flesh that was no longer covered by the high necked under robe.
Her fragrance exploded in the air around them and she shuddered in his arms. When Sesshoumaru found his fingers inching towards her obi he forced himself to stop.
Eyes shut he rested his brown against hers, both breathing in ragged breaths.
Their attention was drawn then by a commotion outside. They broke apart, rushing to the window. Inuyasha was there, a bloodied Koga over his shoulder.
Kagome looked up at Sesshoumaru, tears in her eyes. “Oh no.”
