Chapter 12: Pain
~*~*~
Kagome stared wistfully up at the cloudless blue, summer sky above her as she paused to take a brief break from sewing.
It was a beautiful warm day, perfect enough to sit outside and enjoy the light summer breeze without becoming too hot from the sun. Because of this, Sachiko suggested that they should continue sewing the twins’ kimonos outside.
Kagome, who had been cooped up inside her bedroom, mourning the loss of her friend for nearly a week, hesitantly agreed.
She had been eating normally and was maintaining a healthy weight, but the servants could easily tell that she was simply eating just for pups; almost as if she was performing a mindless routine as she now did with her other basic routines.
Eating food, but not tasting it…getting dressed without really seeing or caring what she wore, sadly nodding ‘yes or no’ to people that spoke to her and she either spent most of her time crying during simple activities or in complete somber silence.
There was no in-between.
Today was one of the rare days where Kagome had spent most of her time in complete silence; she didn’t cry all day, but Atsuko suspected that Kagome didn’t even have the energy or the tears to keep crying anymore.
However, Sachiko saw the bright side of this; Kagome didn’t cry today...
…which meant that her Lady was probably ready to move on, even just a little bit.
Atsuko mentioned earlier today that the twins’ kimonos weren’t even finished yet and asked their Lady if she should finish sewing them up for her, but Kagome shook her head and indicated that she would like to finish them herself.
One of the last few things that she and Sango had done together was sewing the twins’ clothes, right before that fated night. She had missed Sango dearly and didn’t have too many physical reminders of her to hold, but one of her children’s kimonos that the older girl sewed would be one at least.
It was then that Sachiko had suggested moving their little sewing circle outside, so that Kagome could get some fresh air.
It was late afternoon and all of the Ladies in Waiting had spent their afternoon outside quietly sewing various small kimonos alongside their Lady.
The silk kimonos varied in many marvelous, rich colors and patterns; however none of the clothes seem to indicate a specific gender for the wearers, which prompted Sachiko to ask a question she was just dying to know.
Quietly, the young hawk youkai stopped her sewing and looked up at the young miko across from her in the circle of females.
“My Lady…?” Sachiko asked timidly as she drew Kagome’s attention away from the blue sky.
Kagome said nothing as she stared at the young hawk youkai; silently indicating for Sachiko to continue.
“What will you name them?” Sachiko asked with a small smile as other servants began to stop sewing; looking up at the miko expectantly.
Kagome blinked.
Everything was happening so fast and so suddenly that Kagome didn’t even have the time to think about the smaller things.
The news of Sango’s death was a heavy blow, despite the fact that her own children had survived. Somehow, the priority of actually naming them fell short on her list.
Surely, her children deserved a name, but she really didn’t have the intention of having children so soon and they were due almost any day now.
After much thought, Kagome finally gave in.
“I’m not sure,” Kagome quietly said at last, as she her gaze went to her large, swollen belly.
They were currently resting after staying up all night kicking and moving around.
Almost a week before, Kagome was very surprised and pleased when she first felt their small kicks inside of her, but now, all she wanted to do was get them out as soon as possible, since their movements usually prevented her from finally falling asleep after a night of crying.
She loved her little twins, but it was nearly exhausting to be pregnant, especially in her current emotional state.
All Kagome wanted to do was cry and sleep, but the twins required care and needed the occasional space inside of her womb since they were rapidly running out of it, she couldn’t possibly blame them for wanting to move around.
Atsuko cleared her throat, catching the attention of everyone in the circle.
“Unfortunately, as far as this household’s tradition goes, the Lady cannot provide names for any male heirs. That is up to our Lord, as part of tradition,” Atsuko informed kindly before she resumed her sewing.
There was a small silence in the circle as Kagome gave a small frustrated sigh.
So now, she couldn’t name her own children?
Kagome couldn’t wait to give the Lord a piece of her mind…
“But you’re completely free to name any daughters,” Katsutoshi clarified as he swiftly hopped down from the large cherry tree and next to the circle of sewing females in the courtyard.
He had been guarding Kagome the entire time while Sesshoumaru was absent and never had the chance to return home to check on things; mainly Sango.
Katsutoshi knew that his girls would take care of her and would make sure that she didn’t leave, but still…
Katsutoshi sighed inwardly as he made his way over to the small porch before he sat down upon it; lounging lazily in the shade.
Kagome’s misery was starting to wear him down, that he even considered allowing Rin and Shippo to come in to cheer her up, but it was against Sesshoumaru’s orders.
It concerned the inuyoukai that his older cousin had been absent for so long, but according to Kagome’s mark on her shoulder, Sesshoumaru seemed to be fine somewhere.
If anything were to happen to the Taiyoukai, Kagome’s mark would’ve shown it and the miko would’ve been weaker than usual, but she seemed just fine; with the exception of her depressed emotional state.
However, Katsutoshi was starting to wonder what was taking Sesshoumaru so long to get home. Certainly, the Taiyoukai would’ve been back by now.
“My Lady, are you alright?” Katsutoshi heard one of the maids ask as he watched Kagome lean over in pain.
Instantly, Katsutoshi hopped over to his Lady as Kagome tried to stand and waved her hand dismissively.
“I’m okay; it’s just a small pain-” Kagome said before she let out a small cry of pain.
Tentatively, Atsuko walked over to the young miko and placed a hand on her greatly swollen belly.
“Sachiko, go fetch the healers…everyone else, prepare the bedroom for the birthing,” Atsuko ordered calmly.
They weren’t arriving soon, but her Lady’s labor pains were just starting out, so it was wise to move her somewhere comfortable until she could birthed the two little heirs.
Quickly, the servants dispersed in different directions, with the exception of Atsuko and Katsutoshi, and Kagome started to fill with panic.
They were coming!
Her little babies were on their way and she had no idea of what to do.
Sure, she had seen plenty of movies and TV shows about giving birth, but there was no way that she was actually prepared to do this sort of thing right now. Up until a few weeks ago, Kagome was still a high school student and now she was going to become a mother.
Atsuko offered her Lady a warm smile, detecting in the young miko’s pleasant scent that she was very scared.
“Don’t worry, my Lady. We’ll be right with you, every step of the way. You’re in good hands,” Atsuko assured calmly.
Kagome nodded; although she was still nervous.
The small sharp pain she had felt nearly a moment ago was beginning to dull, but Kagome could tell that this was simply the beginning of it. She was happy that she would be holding her babies very soon, but the thought of giving birth and experiencing more pain almost ruined the good mood.
Kagome’s thoughts were interrupted when she flinched as she felt someone put their arms around her.
“Forgive me, my Lady, but I have to carry you back inside,” Katsutoshi informed as he gingerly picked up the tiny, pregnant miko in bridal style.
But as he did, Kagome winced and cried out in pain.
“My Lady…?!” Atsuko exclaimed as she rushed forward to the young miko.
“I don’t know, the pain came back as soon as he picked me up,” Kagome grounded out as she held her round belly out of pain. The sharp pain seemed to have come from her stomach and her back, but it was hard to tell where it was starting from.
Atsuko quickly looked up at Katsutoshi and gave him a serious look.
“Be very careful as you carry her and try not to move so suddenly, Master Katsutoshi,” Atsuko informed before she looked back towards the bedroom’s shoji doors; spotting another servant who signaled that the room was prepared.
“Right. Are you ready to go, my Lady?” Katsutoshi confirmed before he looked down at the pained miko.
Kagome nodded again; hoping to get this over with as soon as possible.
Carefully, Katsutoshi began to walk across the courtyard. He would’ve crossed the yard in one gigantic, swift leap, but he was mindful of Kagome’s condition, as he didn’t want to cause her more pain.
He could feel the anxiety and fear rolling off of Kagome in waves as he carried her towards her private bedchambers, but he still kept his hold steady.
Kagome was going to give birth to two heirs of the Western Lands; one of which would surely be the Celestial Heir. The pups were undoubtedly strong, considering that they weren’t even born yet, but it was hard to tell which pup would be the one to wield the Kamiken.
As Katsutoshi entered into the bedroom from the shoji doors that led to the courtyard, he saw that the main bedroom area was prepared with a makeshift futon in the middle of it. The futon faced the courtyard and was made of several white covers and sheets with a lot of white pillows at the top.
Katsutoshi supposed that they had placed the futon closer to the courtyard’s doors so that Kagome could access cooler, fresher air during the birth. Just as Katsutoshi had walked over to the futon to place Kagome down upon it, Sachiko and Naoki entered into the bedroom along with a few healers that were carrying many supplies for the delivery.
As soon as Naoki spotted the large inuyoukai, she bowed reverently.
“Master Katsutoshi,” Naoki greeted as she slowly made her way to the young miko in his arms.
Kagome groaned in pain again which caused Katsutoshi to carefully lower the miko onto the comfortable looking futon; tentatively, Naoki knelt beside the young woman.
The old owl youkai held out her wrinkled hands above the miko’s swollen stomach and closed her eyes to focus on the pups’ auras; trying detecting pups’ current condition.
After what seemed to be an eternity of silence, Kagome spoke.
“Are they alright?” Kagome asked quietly; her voice was filled with concern as she tried to sit up, but Naoki gently pressed her down.
“They are fine, my Lady. They’re just uncomfortable because there is hardly any space inside, but you are experiencing labor pains, so the twins won’t be uncomfortable for very long,” Naoki explained just as Atsuko entered into the bedroom from outside.
“Shall we send a messenger out for the Lord, Master Katsutoshi?” Atsuko asked as she started to open more of the shoji doors to allow more cool air inside.
Katsutoshi looked down at Kagome who stared back up at him worriedly, before he shook his head.
“If anything, I’m sure that he’s aware of our Lady’s current condition and is probably on his way back for the birthing,” Katsutoshi stated.
Sesshoumaru mentioned that he would be back in time for the twin’s birth, regardless of whether Naraku was defeated or not, so it would only be a matter of time before the Taiyoukai arrived here.
Katsutoshi looked back at the young miko and nearly smirked when he noticed that she was frowning. He could easily tell that Kagome was not too fond of his cousin already and was probably uneasy about being around him.
However, she didn’t have a choice in the matter. Sesshoumaru was more than likely on his way back and she couldn’t really run away from him as they were already mated with pups on the way.
Kagome was finally going to meet her mate and Katsutoshi would give almost anything to see that encounter, especially since the miko had a hot-temper.
This was going to be very interesting…
~*~*~
Sesshoumaru paused as he briefly felt the pulsating sensations of pain and anxiety somewhere in his mind. As the Taiyoukai focused on the sensations, he realized that it was Kagome and that she wasn’t in immediate danger, which could only have meant one thing…
It was nearly time for the pups’ arrival.
Sesshoumaru inwardly sighed in frustration.
He had managed to defeat Inuyasha and Koga nearly a week ago, but Naraku still escaped and it irritated the Taiyoukai to no end that he could not find the evil hanyou anywhere.
Sesshoumaru merely wanted to defeat Naraku and return home just in time for his pups’ birth, perhaps even before then, so that he would be able to spend time with Kagome.
Now he had to go back to his home, but regrettably Naraku was still out there.
The only thing Sesshoumaru could do now was to go back and be with his mate to protect her at such a vulnerable time. If there was ever a time to attack, Masanori would probably attack today.
Without warning, Sesshoumaru drew his sword as he detected a familiar presence approaching him from the sky above.
She was very foolish to even show up in front of him, but he knew that she would lead him to what he was looking for.
Gracefully, Kagura landed in front of Sesshoumaru in the vast forest and gave a low bow to the stoic Taiyoukai, of whom she was very fond of.
“Lord Sesshoumaru,” Kagura greeted in her usual sultry tone.
“Kagura,” Sesshoumaru stoically said back.
“I believe we both know why I am here, so I’ll cut to the chase. Naraku is wounded, too wounded to even know that I’m here speaking with you…” Kagura implied.
Sesshoumaru raised a delicate eyebrow at the wind witch that was infatuated with him.
If he could find Naraku and defeat him tonight, then he could still make it back home in time to be with Kagome. As much as he needed to be with her right now, he couldn’t possibly pass up this great opportunity.
Once he would find him, he would make short work of the evil hanyou.
“Where is he?” Sesshoumaru asked coldly.
Kagura smirked.
Once Sesshoumaru defeated Naraku, then she would be free to mate with the Taiyoukai. All she had to do was gain his trust and she would secure her spot as his mate, ruling rightfully by his side…
~*~*~
“How is she?” Katsutoshi asked before he sipped a small cup of sakè as Sachiko stepped outside of the private chambers and into the private courtyard.
The young hawk youkai shook her head somberly.
The pain seemed to be getting worse for their Lady, but Naoki said that it was still a long way to go before her Lady could even start to push; perhaps another day or so.
“Not yet,” Sachiko confirmed as she closed one of the shoji doors behind her before looking up at the night sky.
Katsutoshi smirked as he glanced up at the young youkai above him, from his lounging position on the floor.
“You’ve seemed to mature over these past couple of weeks, don’t you think little birdy?” Katsutoshi joked leisurely as Sachiko sat down beside him.
Sachiko snorted in an unlady-like fashion as she playfully punched Katsutoshi in the arm.
“I had no choice but to grow up, unlike some people around here,” Sachiko said pointedly as she turned her attention to the night sky again.
She supposed that her mother’s brief brush with death seemed to have cause this sudden sense of maturity within her, but it left Sachiko wondering if it never happened, would she still be the same way now?
Katsutoshi took another sip of sakè.
“We all don’t have a say in the matter, but we’re forced to grow up when we have to. I don’t think it should change who we truly are on the inside,” Katsutoshi murmured as he reached out and pinched the young youkai’s cheek.
Sachiko swatted his hand away.
“Sounds sentimental…have you been affected by humans, Master?” Sachiko smirked.
Katsutoshi narrowed his eyes in warning at the young girl before taking another sip.
“No, and if our Lord knew what you know, then I wouldn’t be surprised to see you heading down to execution. Just be careful of what you say and who you say it to, little bird,” Katsutoshi warned.
Not too many people in the castle knew that Sango was alive and Sesshoumaru wanted to keep it that way. Katsutoshi wouldn’t be able to help Sachiko if she was found to have that sort of information.
Just then, they could hear Kagome groan in pain again from the other side of the screen and Sachiko took it as a cue for her to leave to check on their Lady.
When Sachiko began to pull back the door, Katsutoshi cleared his throat; causing the hawk youkai to look back at him.
Katsutoshi didn’t look back at her but chose to focus on the sky above.
“This conversation never happened, as far as we’re both concerned. Got it?” Katsutoshi implied as he swished around the alcoholic beverage in his cup.
Sachiko rolled her eyes.
“Yeah, sure. Whatever you say, Master,” Sachiko smirked as she entered back into the bedroom; silently closing the door behind her before she tended to her Lady.
Katsutoshi took another sip of his drink before he closed his eyes; trying to relieve the recent stress he had been facing ever since his return to the castle.
“This night is too long,” Katsutoshi sighed.
~*~*~
“My Lady?” Sachiko asked hesitantly as she carefully entered back into the bedroom.
Naoki and her mother were there, surrounding the young miko, but neither of them seemed to move or say anything as they worriedly stared at their pained Lady.
Kagome, who was covered in sweat, cried out in agony again as her eyes screwed shut; panting heavily as the two older youkai watched on in stunned silence.
Normally, her mother would offer words of comfort to the young miko and Naoki would simply do her best to ease the young woman’s pain, by adjusting cushions around since there wasn’t any medicine around powerful enough to ease the pain of a youkai birth.
But instead, the two women said nothing as they helplessly watched Kagome writhed in agony; tightly gripping the white covers around her as another wave of pain washed over her.
“Mother…what’s going on?” Sachiko asked carefully as she slowly approached the scene in front of her. Nothing seemed amiss, with the exception of Kagome’s increased cries, but other than that everything appeared to be normal.
Atsuko and Naoki exchanged concerned looks as the young hawk youkai approached them from behind.
Nothing could prepare them for what was happening in front of them and neither one was sure of what to do in this current situation.
Out of all the bad luck in the world, Kagome seemed to have had the worst.
“What is it, Mother?” Sachiko asked quietly as she knelt down beside the older hawk youkai; trying her best to spot what was wrong.
Kagome started to sob uncontrollably as she flopped back down onto the pillows behind her and that was when Sachiko saw it.
Sachiko looked on in silent horror at the crying miko as she spotted what her mother and Naoki was staring at.
Peeking from underneath the miko’s disheveled yukata was their Lord’s blue crescent moon mating mark…slowly fading away from her porcelain colored shoulder.
Their Lord was gravely injured somewhere and now Kagome was going to be too weak to give birth.
Sachiko inhaled a shaky breath.
The twins might lose both parents tonight.
