Author's Notes: It's a little late, but I just found out that I was nominated and won Best AU/AR Fiction from the Feudal Association! I was so surprised, yet so excited! In case the person(s) who nominated and voted are out there, I just wanted to say thank you. Also, I'm doing this beast without a beta, so I went back and corrected what I could. Thank you for reading.

“Come on Kagome,” he whined, “If you make me fold anymore, I’m gonna purify myself.”
Inuyasha stuffed a pair of pants into a linen bag with careful yet deft motions, his eyes never leaving the girl before him. It was useless, he thought, not a little wretchedly, as he set the full bag on one of the sturdy tables, fidgeting all the while. As much as he tried to ignore that punch in his gut every time (which was all the time) Kagome came to mind, it was impossible to overlook the incredibly fast rising hard-on that occurred exactly twenty-three minutes ago when she bent over her table to plug in the short cord of her iron, back side thrust up pleasantly right in front of his gawking eye. And how could he not admit to himself that right this second he wasn’t imagining how she would look sans that sweet little pinafore, and despite the inconvenience of this…boyfriend, the turmoil that plagued his heart made everything perfectly clear: he wanted her. He liked her. He more than liked her. Last night he told himself he was in love, and though the tiny, tiny rational part of his brain scolded him, his entire body and heart cried out to her. It wasn’t just lust, but-
Fuck! She caught me staring! Play it cool. “Jeez, for as much laundry as you got here, you’d think you’d be able to afford some help or somethin’.”
“Hey!” she chuckled. “You were just crying about coming out of your room. Now you’re out,” Kagome wiped away a thin line of sweat that was threatening to trickle down her temple. Even though it was pouring rain outside, the atmosphere in the laundry was dense and humid.
“Besides,” she winced as a puff of steam shot up in front of her face, “I really can’t afford that. I pay the rent on my mom and grandpa’s house. That’s 235 American. My grandfather is now a citizen, so he receives some sort of senior benefit, but not much. It’s enough to pay for their electricity and food, though. Everything else I make pretty much goes towards my mom’s doctor bills. She has quite a few medicines.” Kagome set the iron down and side stepped her work table. “I guess we could take a little break.”
“Finally!” he huffed and stretched out a bit, turning his head from side to side.
“Come off it, hanyou,” Kagome teased, crossing her arms against her chest. She didn’t notice- but he did- the way her position pulled the neckline of her dress down, exposing the top of the line of her cleavage. Just a little more Kagome, he internally coaxed as she continued to talk. “I’m letting you do all the easy work. Just fold and bag. Fold and bag. Besides, I need help to get this order ready by tomorrow. And I’m bored. I was hoping you’d keep me company-not complain.”
“Yeah, but I’m still healing!” he admonished lightly, glumly tilting head into hand and placing an elbow onto the surface of the work table beside him.
“Alright, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to rest some, after this. And I wouldn’t want you to overexert yourself.”
Though unsure if the last comment was sarcastic, he nodded cheerfully in agreement. Anyways, why should he concentrate on folding clothes when his mind could be better occupied by committing to memory the delicate movements of her mouth as she laughed and the crinkle in her nose that appeared in response the inappropriate things he would say? Just to have an excuse to openly look at her- he appreciated the entirety of the person that made up Kagome. The way her hips swayed as she walked and how she was actually able to hold an intelligent conversation and especially (especially) the fine curve of her ass. He was a man who had a pallet for women and she was just his flavor. So pretty. Just so perfectly her.
But damn he was tired. Inuyasha bit into the rolled omelet she’d brought him earlier and wondered how she could do this day in and day out and not lose her fucking mind. “If you make so little, how do you afford anything, Kagome? Your boyfriend help you out that much?”
“I get a stipend from the Japanese government for running what is considered ‘a necessary and noble wartime industry’. And, yes,” he caught the hitch in her voice, “Naraku gives me his ration card and two-hundred every month so I can pay my bills here. Sometimes he even brings me the products I need. I can’t complain. I always have enough to eat- well maybe not now,” smiling, she narrowed her eyes at him as he chewed, “but I get nervous. Prices keep going up so that, even with his officer’s markdown, I’m struggling. Soap is almost as much gasoline. If this war continues, who knows how much longer I can hang on.” She leaned against the wall, watching him lick the last bit of omelet from his fingers, her eyes glazing over momentarily as his tongue flicked over his- Kagome! You have a boyfriend. He knows now. It’s time to stop acting like this.
But I want him.
The thought flashed through her mind, and once there, she tried to physically shake it from her head. Talk about something else, you idiot girl. I want him. I want him. I want him to touch- say something! Anything to take your mind off the way he-
“There’s something that I’ve been meaning to ask you.” From the way his eyes shot right up to hers, she knew that if she hadn’t his attention before, the stage was definitely hers. “What are you going to do when you go back home?”
That’s it? He tried to not look as disappointed as he felt. What did you think she was gonna ask you, idiot? He was incredibly frustrated, and hoped it didn’t show. Head cocked, he considered the question.
“I dunno. I guess I’ll try to get my old job back or settle down and teach somewhere. You know Kagome, you should think about maybe coming to the US to teach. Your mom and gramps are there and I could probably get you in at a school. You could make more money than you are now. Maybe not much more, but you wouldn’t have to do this,” he made a sweeping gesture across the room, “anymore.
Though she nodded politely at his suggestion, the thought of any kind of future that included him, was incredibly enthralling. But it’s not like he means together, she cautioned herself. He merely feels like he has to pay me back for taking him in. “Well I would need to complete school in order to do that, Inuyasha. That’s another three years at least. Of course I don't want to wash clothes for the rest of my life, but that would be three years of either my family or me not eating. And who would live at the shrine?”
“I bet,” he said casually, deciding to test the waters, “if your boyfriend wanted, maybe he could help you do it.” He omitted his biting last thought of “maybe he prefers you helpless and poor”. Inuyasha was inordinately certain, that if Kagome were his partner, there would be no way she’d be in this hot, little room scrubbing stains out of rich women’s dresses and ironing soldier’s pants. Maybe even the very soldiers who had so irreparably fucked his body up.
Kagome didn’t answer right away, busy as she was looking down at her swinging feet going under and out from beneath the table. “Maybe. I would feel bad about asking him, though. He would expect more.”
The hanyou, again consciously striving to give the impression that he didn’t much care one way or another, tentatively continued his questioning. He refused to allow this conversation to end up like the one last night. She was so hot-headed and defensive, but then again, so was he. He needed to be careful. “Too early to be thinking about settling down, pup?”
Kagome studied him for a moment while debating between which of the two answers she wished to give. His long hair was somewhat confined in a very messy ponytail that had obviously been done with one hand, as he was still not able to reach around with the other. A good effort, Kagome applauded. His injured and still oddly shaped thigh was propped up on an old chair that she had insisted bringing from the kitchen and though too short at the ankle and too wide at the waist, her grandfather’s trousers were strangely adorable and endearing. In fact, when she had offered the worn garments, he took them eagerly and with a genuine smile of thanks. His arms were once again muscled and defined, his chest broad, filling out the old t-shirt, and… and… everything. Everything about him was all at once, to her, nothing short of dazzling. She loved the exasperated way he’d blow the bangs from his face, and how he would look up from the book he was reading with the most alluring smile. And that cute way he ran his tongue over one of his little fangs and she loved-
Him?
She loved him.
Him.
She loved him.
She loved him then, when she was but a girl, and she loved him now as a woman, with a desire that had coincided with his reappearance in her life. It was not a case of her being a sexually late bloomer, which is what she had always assumed due to her rather unenthusastic response to certain bedroom endeavors. It was him. Just looking at him sitting there, she could feel the uncomfortable throbbing that extended from the middle of her stomach to her knees and was positive that if she were to push aside the cloth of her undergarments, she would be wet to the touch. No one else, not even the only man she had ever been with, had brought her to such a state of raw arousal.
So what will you say? Yes, you want to marry Naraku? Kagome felt as though everything, from this answer forward, would determine the course of their relationship. She knew what she wanted to do, but was unsure if she had the courage to take the step.
“Inuyasha, to be honest, I- No. I don’t. I never wanted to be in such a serious relationship with him. I don't want to get into it. It's a long story and it sort of just happened…” she trailed off weakly, knowing how preposterous that must sound.
Inuyasha now found himself more invested in the conversation. What she said about her boyfriend, well, it was unexpected. Fantastic, but unexpected. He scrambled for the perfect words.
“Then why?” His voice cracked, revealing the nervous and bashful boy that slumbered beneath the surface. Aww shit.
“I’m scared.”
“Of him?”
“Of everything!” It was every bit a scream as it was a whisper, and he could see the pain and loneliness etched into her face.
“You know, what you need?” He volunteered. “You need fun. You need excitement.”
Kagome pushed an escaped strand from her face. “It’s nerve-racking enough leaving the house to grocery shop, and I think a bullet through my window is plenty exciting. I need to stay focused with what I have in front of me. Keeping you safe. Feeding us. Making enough to help my family. Everything else comes last. I can’t have fun. Not now. Not here.”
Damn, she sounded so defeated. He wanted to comfort her, take her onto his lap and wrap every available limb around her. Scratch the back of her neck with his claws as his mom would do with her nails when he was a boy. Do it, he prompted himself. Instead, he decided to keep her distracted with words. “When I get too stressed out or just need to be alone, I take advantage of my wealthy family. Sesshomaru has a lake house, and when you drive there, for a good six or seven miles, it’s just straight open road. Whenever I want to get away, I floor it and spend my weekend hiking and riding my bike and lounging about. I’ll read and listen to the radio and just sleep and eat with no pants on and do whatever the hell I want. It’s great.” He watched her finger the wilted collar of her shirt, and wondered if she were purposely avoiding his gaze. “How ‘bout this, Kagome. When this is over, come visit me.”
“Really?”
“Yeah! You talked to Rin! The whole family would love to have you, and you know once Sango gets a hold of you, she’ll never let go. Hell, you could live with her. Why not?” he knew his voice was overly excited, but couldn’t help himself. “Leave here, and start a new life in the States with your friends and family.”
Kagome was gob-smacked. “Inu-“
“We’d pay for your ticket and everything. I’m willing to bet you could even talk Sesshomaru into buying you a house and-“
Kagome began to laugh, “I am NOT going to ask anyone to buy me a house, Inuyasha!” She interrupted, but he continued, unabashed.
“You could go back to school and it would be cheaper and easier to visit your family and you wouldn’t have to worry about anything.
He could tell he had her then. “Anything?” she repeated, seemingly awestruck.
“Anything ever again. I promise. If you won’t accept a house for yourself, then we’ll get one for your mom and grandpa. You’d never have to pay their rent. Your mom can go to the best doctors and I give you my word, neither of you will have to worry about paying for medications.” He must have realized how animated he was because he sat back in his chair, slouching and smirking. “Plus, you’d get to see me every day and if that’s not worth the trouble of moving to another country, then I don’t know what is.”
“Well, if you put it that way, hanyou, I think I’d be safer here,” she laughed at his open mouthed indignation. “Besides, let’s not think of the future. We’ll talk about that when you’re safe, alright?
“But planning is so much fun,” he sat forward again, the hair-tie falling out, luxuriant pearl locks framing his face. “You could go to the university where I teach and we could have lunches together and I could help you study and then we’d have dinner every night with my family.”
“Whoa Inuyasha,” she held up her hand. “You are making all these plans that your family may not agree to.”
“Yeah they would. Trust me. You and Sango were best friends. She doesn’t have anyone close now except for Rin and,” he snorted at his own words, “my brother monopolizes as much of that girl’s time as he possibly can. Of course there’s Miroku, but you haven’t heard the way she still talks about you, Kagome. She’s really missed you. You guys need each other.”
“But Inuyasha, the way you’re going on, I couldn’t possibly impose like that.”
Faster than she would have thought him able, Inuyasha rose and took an uncertain step towards her. Kagome jumped off her perch, lest he should fall over, an open mouth ready to reproach. But before she had the opportunity to lecture him about his hasty movements, and as soon as she stepped immediately before him, he reached out and gently cupped the back of her head, tilting her gaze upwards. His index finger gently scratched her scalp, back and forth, loosening her hair and she bit the inside of her cheek to stop from crumpling into his arms.
“Kagome, listen to me. What you’re doing, helping me like this, saving my life, getting Sango get out of here… that’s not just a little favor. This is a big thing. They will never forget it. You have to understand, that no matter what happens to me, if you make it out of this, you will always have a place with them. Got it?”
Her eyes glossed over and had she stayed still just a moment longer, he could have gathered the nerve to kiss her. But she did not and he could not.
“So if I go, what else will you have planned?” She stepped back and led him by the elbow to the table where she had been sitting. She hopped up, but as tall as he was, he just needed to lift a leg and scoot on. They sat side by side, his bandaged thigh lightly pressing against hers through the material of the slacks, and Kagome wondered if he felt the same agonizing heat.
“We’re gonna go sailing and we’ll hit all the good ole’ American sites, like the Statue of Liberty and maybe take a cross country drive to see your mom. Hey! I never asked. Do you have any other family?”
“Oh, yes. I never see them, of course, but I have aunts and uncles in California. Cousins too. Everyone I knew either left Japan willingly or has been deported. I have an aunt and cousin in China and my dad’s only brother and his family live in New York. We could visit them! Imagine their surprise.”
“You know,” he told her, “I have a lot of cousins and stuff. Well, they’re Sesshomaru’s from his mom’s side. My mom didn’t have any siblings and neither did my dad and I don’t have any grandparents left. Sango’s dad has some family that relocated to Italy that she visits every year or so, and Sessh’s mom, she’s pretty much our other mother. Growing up, if I got in trouble, I’d have to deal with her too. And full demon women are not exactly lenient. She got along with my mom, though.”
As he spoke, Kagome took notice of the small but woeful smile that graced his lips. Poor Inuyasha.
“They were total opposites,” he went on, “but hit it off the few times they met.”
In an almost trancelike manner, Kagome traced a finger along the bulging lines of bandaging round the top of his thigh. “Tell me more about your family in the US. I’m sure Sango told me once, but it’s been so long.”
Disconcerted by the intimate gesture, he swallowed. “My old man’s parents were pretty well off and left everything to him, but by the time my dad married Arisu, which is my brother’s mom, he’d lost it all.
“Such a pretty name,” Kagome remarked.
“I’ve never gotten the whole story, but Sesshomaru says that my dad wasn’t very good with money management, something about lousy stocks and bad investments. Arisu is loaded. I mean, old demon money loaded, and so she helped my dad start business after business, but nothing ever took off. I think it was one of the reasons they grew apart, but I wouldn’t dare ask. And then my dad met my mom, and…they… I’ll tell you about it sometime. But you wanna know something funny, Kagome? Whenever my dad had trouble finding work or got laid off or whatever, Sessh’s mom would always send him money. She even bought the house my mom and Sango lived at. Arisu understood him. She didn’t like it, but he was the father of her son and didn't want him begging on the street, I guess. And then when I came along, she never once made me feel like I was the other woman’s kid. Never. And Sango. Sango is the daughter she never had. She married again- I think it’s been about ten years since Phil.” He shook his head with a sigh. “We’re a one of the kind family. I’d put money on it.” He looked to the girl next to him. “Goddamn I’ve been going on. You should have told me to shut it.”
“It’s ok,” Kagome reassured him. “I never get a chance to talk like this with someone. And for some reason, I’m not in any rush to get back to work. I guess your work ethic is rubbing off.” She smiled, placing her hands in her lap. “So you and Sango are still close?”
His voice was heavy with emotion. “I would do anything for her. My entire family. I know how they think. Sometimes they’re a little standoffish, but that’s cuz they’re not used to people messing with them. You put them in their place and they’ll be yours forever.” Inuyasha stretched out his leg, pulling on a muscle that had begun to stiffen. His sharp intake of breath at the effort was not lost on his ever vigilant nurse.
“Inuyasha,” she tugged the sleeve of his shirt. “How’s your leg?”
Always back to his health. “I’m fine, Kagome, I’d tell you if I wasn’t. Just relax for once.”
“Aye, sorry that I’m concerned with your well-being.”
“You sound like the old nurse Rin had when she broke her arm. Naggy nag nag nag.”
“I do not nag!” she cried. “And I’m not that old.”
“What are you, twenty-one, twenty two?” he grabbed her chin between his thumb and forefinger. Though he made like he was gauging her age, he was actually trying to take in as much of her as possible. He observed for the first time a little mole right where her hair line and forehead met and felt the peculiar urge to kiss that very spot.
“Almost twenty two,” she replied. “It’s my birthday...” she stopped speaking as her mouth fell open wide, before turning into a smile, that then morphed to a laugh. “My birthday is in two days. I can’t believe I forgot. I haven’t celebrated a birthday since before my mom got sick, but I usually remember the date.”
He gave her thigh a light slap. Tit for tat, he thought. “Oh, you know we’re gonna to celebrate!”
“Maybe,” she muttered in a very non-committal way. “Come on, Inuyasha, you need to lie down. Take a nap or read. I’ve got to finish up here and then I’ll start making dinner. We’re going to have to start on your emergency stores of ramin, unfortunately, but I should be able to buy something fresher when I get paid tomorrow.”
He slid gently off the table top, waiting for Kagome to follow suit and offer her arm. Though he was confident he could walk unaided, he refrained from telling her that her assistance from point A to B was probably no longer necessary. There was no way he was going to pass up even five minutes of her body pressed solidly into his. When she was that close, he could look at her and stare at her, and for just that moment, pretend that she was his.
“Kagome, I’m serious,” he insisted. “Let’s have us a little party. We, erm, you could cook dinner, and we’ll eat in the kitchen. I’ll wear one of your grandfather’s old suits and you could doll yourself up and we’ll drink those bottles of liquor I know you’ve got stashed in your closet.”
“We’ll see,” she considered, as they traveled step by step to the bedroom. “I’m nervous with you out here. So much could go wrong. It was ok today because of the storm, but normally…it wouldn’t be the best idea.”
“Just think about it,” he persuaded as they reached the closet, his body already dreading the moment of separation. He wanted to take her and lay her down on his bed and- shit he could feel himself growing hard again. “Didn’t you say it was supposed to rain all week?” NO! She was opening the little hidden door. He didn’t want her to leave. “Listen. I don’t wanna lie down. Lemme stay with you. I’ll fold if you want or I could just sit in the corner and read. I won't make a peep.” Lip curling, he sighed. “Kagome, I don’t wanna be alone.”
The pleading tones of his voice broke through her reservations. “I’ll grab a book for you. You can spend the rest of the day with me as long as you promise to take it easy.”
As she turned from him to retrieve a book, neither one saw the wide smile plastered across both of their faces.
((((((((((((((()))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Mostly true to his word, Inuyasha moved as little as possible but, on a whim, began to read aloud when silent reading couldn’t stop him from trying to watch her work from behind the page. When Kagome did not object, he made it about four chapters into Far From the Maddening Crowd before she tapped his shoulder and told him that it was time to start dinner.
“Good, my throat’s pretty dry,” he turned down the corner of a page before setting the book on the table.
“I really liked it, Inuyasha. Thank you.”
“I don’t mind doin’ it every day for you, Kagome. It made time pass faster for me too.”
Kagome hid her glee, not wanting to give away the fact that she was indeed going to relent and let him out when (and if) she deemed it safe enough. She tapped a finger against her pursed lips, “We’ll see.” It was much more entertaining to let him sweat it a little longer. Didn’t he just tell her to have some fun?
“Come on! And what about your birthday? Promise me you’ll let me out of my dank little hole for the night. Pleeease? I’ll get on my knees and beg.”
“But I don’t have any doggy treats,” she said seriously.
“Kagooome!” He could see her stern façade cracking at his faux whining tones. Excellent. “I’ll ask you properly. How’s this? Kagome Higurashi, would you like to cook dinner for me and wear something nicer than that ugly grey shirt and apron thingy for your birthday?”
She had to laugh. “Ok, Inuyasha. I would love to have, excuse me, cook dinner for you for my birthday. Now can we please worry about tonight’s dinner of ramin noodles and squash with the bad bits scraped off? And if you save room for dessert, there's half a bruised banana we can draw straws over.”
In a state of euphoria at her acceptance, and despite the fact that such an action would probably kill him, it took every ounce of patience to remain calm and not twirl her about the room.
